Five reasons why you most likely will never get the bird flu:

1) Compared to 1918 (the year of the Spanish flu pandemic) we live in a completely different world. Tier notes that in 1918 "scientists didn't even know what a virus was." In 2006, we can see viruses coming from miles away. In 1918 they didn't know what hit them until the pandemic was in full swing.

2) The H5N1 virus isn't new. In fact, it was first identified about 50 years ago. Tier writes: "For all we know, it's been infecting people for hundreds - if not thousands - of years. And in all that time, it has not caused a human pandemic. But only in 1997 did scientists actually discover it had infected humans."

3) The H5N1 virus isn't easily transmitted - Part 1: Tier cites an article published last month in the journal Nature in which researcher Yoshihiro Kawaoka notes that H5N1 infects the bottom area of the lungs. Other flu strains tend to infect the upper lungs, making transmission by coughing and breathing much more likely.

4) The H5N1 virus isn't easily transmitted - Part 2: Tier offers this quote from an October 2006 issue of the British Medical Journal: "The lack of sustained human-to-human transmission suggested that this H5N1 virus does not currently have the capacity to cause a human pandemic." The BMJ article calls the current warnings of a pandemic "entirely a theoretical speculation."

5) It appears that only a small percentage of people infected with H5N1 suffer extreme reactions. In a recent study published in the Archives of Internal Medicine, researchers surveyed more than 45,000 residents in an area of rural Vietnam where outbreaks of bird flu have been widespread. About 25 percent of the respondents reported direct contact with sick or dying birds. About 18 percent reported flu-like symptoms. The researchers concluded that, "transmission could be more common than anticipated, though close contact seems required." In other words, it's highly likely that we don't hear about the large majority of bird flu cases, which are mild. We hear about the deaths. Furthermore, you literally have to LIVE with infected birds to pick up H5N1.

Given all the evidence that we won't see a H5N1 pandemic, why is bird flu fear so widespread? Because it generates a ton of money.

Eye Fungus a Mystery to Bausch & Lomb

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (AP) - The source of a spike in dangerous fungal eye infections linked by federal health officials to a contact lens solution sold by Bausch & Lomb Inc. (BOL) remains a mystery, the eye-care products maker said Wednesday.

"As far as speculation about theories, there's a lot of them, we've run a lot of them to ground and come up with nothing," the company's chief executive, Ron Zarella, said in a conference call with analysts.

"Every additional test we've run suggests that the formulation is as safe and effective as anything on the market and in particular with regard to Fusarium."

The company halted U.S. shipments of its ReNu with MoistureLoc contact lens solution Monday night while the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention investigates 109 reports of infection caused by a fungus called Fusarium in patients in 17 states.

The agency has made no direct link between ReNu and the infections, traced back to June 2005, but a high incidence of the affected people had used the solution.

Bausch & Lomb, which also makes contact lenses, ophthalmic drugs and vision-correction surgical instruments, stopped short of pulling the brand, made at its factory in Greenville, S.C., but merchants led by Wal-Mart Stores Inc. (WMT) began removing it from store shelves Tuesday.

Fusarium is commonly found in plant material and soil in tropical and subtropical regions. Without eye-drop treatment, which can last two to three months, the infection can scar the cornea and blind its victims.

Symptoms can include blurry vision, pain or redness, increased sensitivity to light and excessive discharge from the eye. It is not transmitted from person to person.

Bausch & Lomb had already been grappling with accounting troubles in recent months, and Zarrella said the company was unlikely to meet an April 30 deadline to file its annual report for 2005.

"I know you're all anxious to see that done and believe me so am I," he told analysts. "There's nothing more I can say about that today."

In March, the company moved to reduce its reported net sales by a combined $9.3 million after an internal investigation determined its South Korean subsidiary engaged in improper sales practices from 2002 to 2005. It also uncovered accounting irregularities at its Brazilian unit in December. In connection with the investigations, several class-action lawsuits were filed against the company last month alleging insider trading.

In February, Bausch & Lomb stopped shipments of ReNu in Singapore and Hong Kong after a similar spike in fungal infections was reported in contact-lens wearers there. It is partnering with health authorities and researchers to investigate the extent and cause of the outbreak, which also surfaced in Malaysia.

More than 30 million Americans wear contact lenses, and the ReNu brand generated $45 million in U.S. sales last year.

Study Blames Mold for 1990s Fish Ulcers

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) - A new round of research again challenges the findings of a North Carolina State researcher who linked a parasitic algae to dozens of fish kills off the East Coast in the 1990s.

The study, led by scientists at a National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration lab in Beaufort, found that a common species of water mold appears to be the main cause of skin ulcers and lesions on fish that swim in North Carolina's sounds.

JoAnn Burkholder first reported in 1990 that the pfiesteria algae was dangerous to both fish and humans. Based on lab studies, she said the algae can develop into a toxic form that eats fish flesh and may cause human health problems.

The work has long been a source of controversy, with other scientists saying they have been unable to duplicate Burkholder's findings.

The NOAA researchers developed a DNA-based method to test fish lesions for the mold. Tests of menhaden from the Pamlico and Neuse River estuaries turned up the mold in all fish with lesions.

NOAA scientists Wayne Litaker and Mark Vandersea said the findings add to evidence that the water mold is the major cause of lesions in fish in the Southeast, though they said stress, poor nutrition, parasites and viruses can also cause lesions.

Litaker said their work is different from that of Burkholder because they dealt with fish in the environment and she relied on lab studies.

"Everything was based on a tank," Litaker said.

Burkholder, a professor of aquatic ecology at N.C. State, said the NOAA work places too much emphasis on a single possible reason for the lesions.

"Our research established that pfiesteria caused some of the lesions in menhaden, but we have been careful to say that many causes may be involved," she said.

She said that the algae hasn't been linked to recent fish kills because it was probably washed down the sounds due to the heavy floods from Hurricane Floyd in 1999, and could take years to re-establish itself in significant numbers.

N.C. State veterinary pathologist Mac Law, who has examined many menhaden - a fish whose thin skin may be susceptible to lesions - said fish kills and lesions have complex causes.

He said both problems appear to have increased over the past 10 or 15 years, probably due to environmental conditions. He said water mold is known to cause lesions, but noted that he has seen lesions where no mold was present.

"The bottom line, I think, is that over time there are many different things that can cause a breach in the skin of these fish," he said.
