Something To Think About
============================
Can tight-fitting garments
cause skin rashes?
By Judy Foreman
Boston Globe
You bet. Tights, skin-hugging pants, panty hose and other garments, like
underwear with a tight elastic band, can all cause folliculitis, an
inflammation of hair follicles caused by a bacterium or fungus that is
already on the skin and, because of the irritation caused by the
clothing, gets pushed in deeper. Sweating exacerbates this process.
A different problem called pseudo-folliculitis can be triggered not by
an infection but by shaving too closely. When you shave hair --
especially in the pubic area, in the armpit, or on the face -- the hair
often grows back curly, cutting into the skin and causing inflammation,
said Dr. Bernard Cohen, director of pediatric dermatology at Johns
Hopkins University School of Medicine.
If tight clothing is the problem, wear looser garments, or at least
clothes designed to ''wick" sweat away from the skin. You can also
combat folliculitis with antibacterial soaps or benzoyl peroxide-based
products such as Panoxyl soap, said Dr. John Williams, a dermatologist
at Brigham and Women's Hospital. In general, he added, ''folliculitis
will run its course." If it doesn't, oral antibiotics may be required.
In some cases, infectious folliculitis can progress to boils -- painful,
pimple-like sores deeper in the skin that may have to be lanced to get
rid of pus. If inflamed hair follicles are large, tender, or are
accompanied by a high temperature or swollen glands, you should see a
doctor.
For pseudo-folliculitis, the solution is to try not to shave too close
(some electric razors do not shave as close) and shave in the direction
in which hair grows.
LENA'S COMMENT:
If you go the route of taking an antibiotic make sure you take a good
probiotic during the process and a week after or you will have more
problems sooner than you think!

47,000 men who
participated in the Harvard Health-Professionals Follow-Up Study. The
amount of vitamin D exposure was assessed by examining data on vitamin
intake through diet and supplements, outdoor physical activity,
geographic residence and skin pigmentation.
The Harvard team found that low levels of vitamin D may be associated
with increased cancer risk (particularly digestive-system cancers) and
mortality in men. Researchers estimated that a daily vitamin D intake of
1,500 IU is required to offset cancer risk.

Researchers at Loma Linda University and Oakcrest Health Research
Institute in Yucaipa discovered this in a study of 32 healthy men,
half of whom were instructed to view a one-hour humorous video of
their own selection. The other half simply sat in a room with an
assortment of magazines.
The scientists found that those chosen to watch the humorous video
had, on average, 27% more beta-endorphins and 87% more human growth
hormone in their blood than the control group - before the video
clips even started to roll. The levels of these beneficial hormones
remained elevated during and after the experiment.

FOOD OF THE WEEK
~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~
Phaseolus vulgaris,
As my husband prepares his garden for planting there this staple will
always be part of the planting season food. Beans of several species but
I think my favorite is this weeks special food!
All of the bean species is healthy and great food that should be eaten
at least twice a week for greater health. My favorite Black beans,
botanically-known as Phaseolus vulgaris, are native to the
Americas. One of over 500 varieties of kidney beans, black beans are
also known as turtle beans, caviar criollo,
black Spanish beans, Tampico beans, Venezuelan
beans and frijoles negros. These beans date back at least
7,000 years when they were a staple food in the diets of Central and
South Americans.

Black beans are about the size of a pea, up to 1/2-inch long, with the
slightly less-pronounced boat-shape common to kidney beans.
This may be why they are my favorite; The darker the bean the more the
antioxidant content. Out of all the bean family black beans win with the
most nutrients.
Black beans are an amazing food! One-half cup of cooked black beans has
as many antioxidants as two glasses of red wine. Not only that but they
are packed with fiber and folate, which are touted to be great at
reducing the risk of heart disease. Black beans, as all dried legumes,
are also good sources of starches, fiber, B vitamins, iron, zinc,
phosphorus, complex carbohydrates and calcium. Although about half of
the calcium is lost during cooking a high percentages of the other
nutrients remain however, even after cooking.
All legumes are high in protein, and black beans are no exception. Dried
beans are important sources of protein in vegetarian diets, and in areas
where animal protein is scarce or expensive. However, this protein is
incomplete (does not contain all 9 amino acids), so grains (which
provide the missing amino acids) must also be a significant part of the
strictly vegetarian diet. In the areas where common beans originated
(Central America and southern Mexico) corn and squash supplied the
missing amino acids and additional source of vitamins. When rice and
beans are mixed at a meal a complete protein can be had?
Before cooking, be sure to pick through them, picking out any small
pebbles, split and withered beans and any other foreign matter. (Beans
from the Rockies and Pacific coast tend to have more adobe (bits of
clay) and stones). It is also helpful to cover the beans with cold
water, let sit for 5 minutes and remove anything that floats. Repeat to
be sure all dirt and foreign matter is removed. Drain and ready to cook
Fast food recipe. No it isn't initially a fast food but one that
can be made ahead refrigerated and stored for several days and eaten
without losing nutrients!

1 cup diced tomatoes

Journal Calls for
Change in Drug Trials
Apr 14, 2006
By TARIQ PANJA
LONDON (AP) - Britain's leading medical journal called Friday
for "urgent change" in the processes for approving and
regulating human drug trials involving man-made antibodies,
weeks after authorized tests left six men fighting for their
lives.
The six men were hospitalized in Britain with severe side
effects after volunteering to test the TGN1412, a monoclonal
antibody, or a genetically engineered version of an antibody,
which defends the immune system against infections.
If successfully tested, the drug would have been used to fight
leukemia and autoimmune and inflammatory diseases.
Britain's Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency,
or MRHA, authorized the tests after receiving the results of
experiments on animals and detailed guidelines on how the test
would be conducted.
Five of the volunteers, the first humans to test TGN1412, have
been released from the hospital. The sixth is no longer in
critical condition and is improving, said Dr. Ganesh
Suntharalingam, clinical director of intensive care at Northwick
Hospital, in London.
The Lancet said that the MRHA's interim findings - released
earlier this month and saying there was no fault with either the
drug or the testing procedures - proved changes were needed.
The journal said that the severe reactions in tests on humans,
despite no similar signs in animals, showed that the existing
process may be flawed. Human trials can only take place after
successful laboratory tests on animals.
The drugs makers TeGenero AG, of Wuerzburg, Germany, said the
drug previously had been tested on rabbits and monkeys with no
"drug-related adverse events."
"The TGN1412 events indicate that urgent change is needed in the
approval processes and regulation of Phase I trials of
biological agents," The Lancet's editorial said, referring to
first-time tests on healthy humans of drugs such as monoclonal
antibodies. It did not give examples, however, of what changes
could be warranted.
MRHA has set up an independent expert group to investigate the
case and prevent it happening again, an MRHA spokesman said on
condition of anonymity, in line with organization policy. The
expert group will focus solely on the science surrounding
monoclonal antibodies, and how the future development and
testing of such drugs can be carried out safely, he said.
The trial of the monoclonal antibody was being run at a London
hospital by U.S.-based Parexel International.
The MRHA authorizes around 1,100 clinical trials in Britain each
year, 350 of which are Phase I.
LENA'S COMMENT: Such double
talk; "...no fault with either the drug or the testing
procedures - proved changes were needed." If the drug wasn't at
fault why make changes? If you think this only involves Europe,
think again... Drug manufacturers make drugs wherever they can
and distribute to the world at large... So this is important to
everyone's drug world!

Experts See Peril
in Reduced Monitoring of Nation's Streams and Rivers
By John Schwartz
NY Times; April 11, 2006
When Michael Griffin thinks about the stream gauge on the Licking River
at Catawba, Ky., he says he has an uncomfortable sense that history may
repeat itself.
In 1994, federal budget cuts led to the loss of a gauge on the Licking
River at McKinneysburg. Three years later, a flash flood on the Licking
inundated the town of Falmouth, six miles northwest, and killed four
people.
The furor over the incident led to more gauges and increased federal
financing. But in the past few years, budget pressures have built up
once more. And this time, the gauge at Catawba is caught in the squeeze.
"We are on the same river probably within 50 miles of where we were
before, and the same danged thing is happening again," said Mr. Griffin,
who is the assistant director for hydrologic surveillance at the
Kentucky Water Science Center. The center is part of the United States
Geological Survey, which runs the nation's stream-gauge network.
"Another flood hits, we might be back in exactly the same situation we
were in back in '97," he said.
River flooding kills about 125 people each year and costs billions of
dollars in property damage. "That's more deaths per year than are
attributed to tornadoes or hurricanes," said Thomas Graziano, the chief
of the hydrologic services division of the National Weather Service.
The network of gauges, including temporary devices that can be installed
at a spot that becomes worrisome, can help warn that a flood is on the
way so people can move to higher ground. Without gauges, however, there
are no data, and "we can't meet our river forecast and warning mission
without this data," Mr. Graziano said.
For all that, a stream gauge is a humble thing. Typically, a small
structure like an outhouse on the stream bank protects the equipment.
Older gauges have sensors in a well dug under the structure. A pipe
connects the well to the water flowing by. The "stilling well" isolates
the level of the water without the interference of waves, and the
position of a float measures the height of the water. Newer gauges
accomplish the task without the stilling well. Separate measurements
determine the velocity of the flow.
And while the data from gauges are best known for alerting people to
floods, the devices serves many other purposes. The data help determine
how often an area might be flooded, and with what intensity; that, in
turn, guides engineers and architects in building bridges, roads and
communities. It helps determine the 100-year flood measurement that
figures into flood insurance policies and construction regulations.
The data from the gauges also help measure the gradual changes in
patterns of drought and high water. In Maine, for example, stronger
stream flow in February and lower flow in May suggest that the winter
ice has begun melting earlier. That can help assess the effect of global
warming. But it is also important information for recreational fishermen
and kayakers.
All of that monitoring costs money: each gauge costs, on average,
$13,500 to run, said Michael Norris, coordinator of the National
Streamflow Information Program. The national network, which has other
costs as well, takes some $120 million each year to run about 7,400
gauges, down from a peak of 8,221 in 1968.
The program has always been supported by a patchwork of money from the
United States Geological Survey; other federal agencies like the Army
Corps of Engineers and the Bureau of Reclamation; and more than 800
state and local "funding partners."
That arrangement can sometimes create tension, said Jay Gourley, a vice
president of the Public Education Center, an environmental group that
advocates greater resources for the system. "It's kind of a game of
chicken between the states and the federal government," Mr. Gourley
said. "The people who live in these flood-prone areas are the ones who
are losing their property and dying in the meantime."
In the case of the Licking River, there is still debate over whether the
deactivated stream gauge might have provided a crucial alert if it had
still been in operation. Robert Hirsch, the associate director for water
at the Geological Survey, said he believed that it would have. "Lives
were lost, I think, in part because of the inadequacy of the warning,"
Dr. Hirsch said.
After that flood, the government expanded the network, mainly by
reactivating stream gauges that had been discontinued, bringing the
number to more than 7,500 from about 7,000.
