Greetings and thank you for

Rest day for me tomorrow...
Are you ready for a rest? If you have been reading this ezine long
enough you know that I advocate taking at least one rest day a week and
giving the body a much needed change of pace... That doesn't mean you
should go out and run yourself ragged with some sport or skiing, or
whatever. The body truly needs a rest as does the brain and though those
things are good exercise they do not rest the brain or the body... Mine
usually includes a long leisurely walk, not my usual power walk, a long
mineral bath soak, focusing on the Lord and his pattern for my life,
some reading that isn't related to health, environment or business and
just changing my whole brain pattern for a day... It has worked for me
for many years and I think it will work for you as well. Make your rest
day goal now and stick to it...

Mediterranean Diet May Repel
Alzheimer's
Apr 19, 2006
By MALCOLM RITTER
NEW YORK (AP) - A Mediterranean-style diet that appears to cut the risk
of heart disease also may help protect against Alzheimer's disease, a
new study suggests.
People who followed the diet were up to 40 percent less likely than
those who largely avoided it to develop Alzheimer's during the course of
the research, scientists reported.
Still, more research must be done before the diet can be recommended to
ward off Alzheimer's, said Dr. Nikolaos Scarmeas of the Columbia
University Medical Center in New York, lead author of the research. The
work was recently published online by the Annals of Neurology.
The diet he tested includes eating lots of vegetables, legumes, fruits,
cereals and fish, while limiting intake of meat and dairy products,
drinking moderate amounts of alcohol and emphasizing monounsaturated
fats, such as in olive oil, over saturated fats. Previous research has
suggested that such an approach can reduce the risk of heart disease.
Prior research has also suggested that certain components of the
Mediterranean diet can reduce the risk of developing Alzheimer's,
Scarmeas said. But he said the previous work has tended to focus on
individual nutrients like vitamin C or foods like fish. By studying a
comprehensive diet instead, the new research could take possible
interactions between specific foods and nutrients into account, he said.
The idea that a heart-healthy diet could also help fight Alzheimer's
fits in with growing evidence that "the kinds of things we associate
with being bad for our heart turn out to be bad for our brain," said Dr.
Marilyn Albert, a Johns Hopkins neurology professor and spokeswoman for
the Alzheimer's Association. The list includes high cholesterol, high
blood pressure, obesity, smoking and uncontrolled diabetes, she said.
So it makes sense that a diet low in saturated fats and cholesterol
would reduce the risk of Alzheimer's, said Albert, who was not involved
in the new study.
The new work is among the most convincing so far to show an effect of
diet on Alzheimer's risk, she said. Such large studies are important,
she said, "to add to the body of evidence to help persuade people they
really can do something in their daily lives to reduce risk."
Scarmeas and colleagues followed 2,258 elderly residents of northern
Manhattan for an average of four years. The participants were asked in
detail about their dietary habits and evaluated every 18 months or so
for signs of dementia. None showed any dementia at the start of the
study, but by the end, 262 had developed Alzheimer's.
To look for an effect of diet, the researchers gave each participant a
score of 0 to 9 to nine on a scale that measured how closely they
followed the Mediterranean diet. Compared to those showing the lowest
adherence, those who scored 4 or 5 showed 15 percent to 25 percent less
risk of developing Alzheimer's during the study, while those with higher
scores had about 40 percent less risk.
LENA'S COMMENT: Note the headline says "May"! That's the drug
company's way of saying; "heck we don't know but it sounds good so let's
go with it"... Don't get me wrong the Mediterranean diet is a great and
healthy diet but isn't the whole answer... They still aren't listening
to all the study's findings for the last 70 years that tells them that a
minerals deficiency is at the bottom of ALL ILLNESSES AND DISEASES!

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY!
=======================
A Harvard study
that examined herbal usage among 1,200 female subjects, half of whom
were ovarian cancer patients finding were; Women who used ginkgo were
much more likely to be in the healthy group. In fact, it appeared that
when ginkgo was used for six months or longer, ovarian cancer risk was
cut by as much as 60 percent. The Harvard team backed up this research
with a lab study in which results showed that a small amount of
ginkgolide (the biologically active component of ginkgo biloba)
stopped the growth of ovarian cancer cells. If you're thinking of
supplementing with ginkgo, keep in mind that many alternative
practitioners believe the recommended daily dosage of 120 mg is too low,
and that the dosage should be 240 mg or more per day.

Omega-3s could stop
liver cancer cells growth
By
Stephen Daniells
03/2006 - Omega-3 fatty acids could prevent or inhibit the growth of
liver cancer cells, say researchers from the University of
Pittsburgh at today?s annual meeting of the American Association for
Cancer Research.
Omega-3 fatty acids have been linked to a wide-range of health
benefits, including cardiovascular disease (CVD), good development
of a baby during pregnancy, joint health, behaviour and mood, and
certain cancers.
"It has been known for some time that omega-3 fatty acids can
inhibit certain cancer cells. So, we were interested in determining
whether these substances could inhibit liver cancer cells. If so, we
also wanted to know by what mechanism this inhibition occurs,"
explained lead researcher Tong Wu, from the University of Pittsburgh
School of Medicine.
Liver cancer is one of the rarer forms of the disease, accounting
for about one per cent of all cancers. Worryingly, the risk of the
disease increases with age, and rates have doubled since 1975, from
two to four people per 100,000 people, according to Cancer Research
UK.
The Pittsburgh scientists report the effects of omega 3 fatty acids,
eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), and the
omega-6 fatty acid, arachidonic acid (AA), on liver cancer cells.
Both omega-3 fatty acids had a dose-dependent inhibitory effect,
while the omega-6 acid had not effect, said the researchers.
Wu and colleagues found that DHA induced apoptosis, programmed cell
death of the cancer cells, by promoting the splitting of a protein,
called poly (ADP-Ribose) polymerase (PARP), which is considered a
tell-tale marker of cell death.
Also, both DHA and EPA indirectly decreased the levels of a protein,
beta-catein, which has been linked to tumour development.
"Beta-catenin is known to promote cell growth and also is implicated
in tumor cell promotion. Therefore, our finding that omega-3 fatty
acids can decrease levels of beta-catenin is further evidence that
these compounds have the ability to interact on several points of
pathways involved in tumor progression," said Wu.
A similar study was recently published on-line in the British
Journal of Cancer (doi: 10.1038/sj.bjc.6603030), reporting the
effects of EPA, DHA and AA, on the spread of human prostate cancer
cell lines.
While both omega-3 fatty acids were reported to have beneficial
effects on stopping the growth and spread of the prostate cancer
cells, the omega-6 fatty acid was reported to produce a metabolite,
prostaglandin E2, helped the spread of the prostate cancer cells to
bone marrow cells.
The role of omega fatty acids in the prevention of cancer has
received increased media attention in recent weeks after a British
Medical Journal article published a meta-analysis reviewing the
associations between omega-3 intake and the risk of heart disease,
cancer and mortality.
The analysis reported that there was no indication that the fatty
acids offered protection for any of the disease, conclusions that
were rounded upon by industry groups.
Dr Ray Rice, a food scientist and technical adviser to the Omega 3
Group, a consortium of fish companies, hit back at the study,
saying: "This report used a faulty technique. It is conceptually
flawed and should not cause people to regard seafood as anything but
tasty and nutritious."
The studies by Wu and colleagues are presented as abstracts numbers
2679 and 2680.

New benzene test reveals flaw in FDA soft drinks
investigation
By Chris Mercer
04/19/2006 - A new test should more accurately show the amount
of benzene in soft drinks on shop shelves, but that does not
mean there is no problem, says the scientist behind the new
procedure to BeverageDaily.com.
America's Food and Drug Administration (FDA) said last week an
ongoing investigation, also known as work by independent
scientist James Neal-Kababick, showed its tests for benzene in
drinks over the last 15 years may be faulty.
Kababick has now announced his Flora Research Laboratories in
California have developed a new procedure that would minimise
the formation of benzene during testing by halving the time and
temperature needed to measure benzene levels in drinks.
Current FDA tests for benzene involved heating up the beverage,
a process likely to increase benzene formation in the drink
during testing and, therefore, risk unrealistic results.
Recent FDA testing has found some soft drinks containing
benzene, a known carcinogen, above the maximum level allowed in
US drinking water. The suspected source is two common
ingredients – sodium benzoate and ascorbic acid (vitamin C) – in
the drinks.
The FDA and soft drinks industry have known for 15 that these
two ingredients could react to form benzene in drinks, as well
as that exposing such a drink to heat could significantly raise
benzene levels.
Kababick said that, bearing this in mind, “it took me 10 minutes
to realise the problem with their [FDA] testing method”.
His new method has now been contracted by the US government's
Office of Dietary Supplements to help it examine benzene
formation in liquid supplements and vitamin drinks that also
contain sodium benzoate.
It could also help soft drinks firms, and producers of other
liquid foods or supplements containing the two ingredients, to
examine their own products.
Kababick said: “A different sampling technique to remove benzene
means we can measure levels down to 500 parts per trillion,
which makes it more sensitive than the FDA method. It is
important for producers to see benzene formation before it hits
the EU or FDA limits for water.”
The flaw identified in FDA testing for benzene does not,
however, mean the agency and soft drinks firms are out of the
woods.
It was unclear why the FDA had apparently not altered its
testing method for benzene in the 15 years since it first made
the link between benzene and the sodium benzoate-ascorbic acid
combination, in 1990.
“They have lots of labs all over the country and there could be
a lot of factors involved, but I'm not sure why the FDA did not
address this matter,” said Kababick.
And, he added, the new testing procedure should not be used to
belittle the issue of benzene forming in drinks containing
sodium benzoate and ascorbic acid.
Recent tests on drinks conducted by Kababick found a bottled
lemon concentrate drink with 50 parts per billion benzene, five
times above the World Health Organisation's limit for benzene in
tap water.
“Actually I would grade that as fairly accurate,” said Kababick,
despite the result coming from what he termed a transition
testing model. Other tests done by Kababick's Flora labs
revealed “fairly low” levels of benzene in various different
kinds of soft drinks.
But, he said, all the samples had been refrigerated prior to
testing, and the effect of heat on benzene formation should not
be discounted.
Industry testing on soft drinks 15 years ago is thought to have
found that temperatures of 30°C and exposure to UV light for
several hours were enough to more than triple benzene residues
in some drinks.
Both Kababick and a food scientist who worked on those industry
tests said it was essential for authorities and companies to
test for benzene in soft drinks exposed to a range of different
storage and transport conditions.
“Not all consumers are buying their beverages from refrigerators
in grocery stores. And sometimes when the drinks are brought
home they are left standing in the sun on a porch or in a hot
car,” said Kababick.
Data reported by America's soft drinks industry association in
the 1980s showed that soft drinks could be exposed to between
32°C and 49°C in US summer months.
Kababick said his new testing procedure merely aimed to provide
greater accuracy during tests on drinks from a range of
different conditions. He expected to publish a journal article
on the procedure, together with tests on drinks, within six
months.
The stakes are high following recalls of drinks in the UK, and
the launch last week of the first lawsuits against soft drinks
firms over benzene in drinks.
Law firm McRoberts, Roberts & Rainer LLP joined forces with
tobacco litigation veteran Tim Howard to file class action
lawsuits against In Zone Brands, who make Bellywashers drinks,
and Polar Beverages.
They alleged independent tests showed both companies had drinks
contaminated with benzene above the limit for drinking water in
the US.
The FDA has repeatedly said that none of the benzene levels it
had found in drinks so far were considered a health risk for
consumers.
The continuing presence of the issue 15 years after it was
discovered, however, suggests a communication breakdown. One FDA
scientist told BeverageDaily.com in February that soft drinks
firms had pledged in 1990 to “get the word out and reformulate”.
The American Beverage Association said reformulation did take
place, but that some brands may not be aware of the potential
for sodium benzoate and ascorbic acid to form benzene.
“15 years ago it was under control, but this is a fast-growing
industry. There are a lot of new companies, a lot of new brands
and things have changed,” association spokesperson Kevin Keane
told this website.
BeverageDaily.com broke the current story on benzene in soft
drinks, after it uncovered in February that recent FDA testing
had found some drinks containing benzene above America's limit
tap water.

Cell Phone Users
240 Percent More Prone to Brain Tumors
A new Swedish study indicates that mobile phone use can raise the risk
of brain tumors. In the study, 2,200 cancer patients, and an equal
number of healthy control cases, were examined for mobile phone use.
Among the cancer patients, about a tenth of the nearly 1,000 with
malignant brain tumors were also heavy mobile phone users.
Heavy use was defined as 2,000 or more hours, or about 10 years' use at
an hour per day.
Brain cancer patients also showed a significant increase in risk of
tumor for the side of the head where they generally used the mobile
phone. The researchers who conducted the study said that the figures
demonstrate a 240 percent increased risk of a malignant tumor on that
side of the head.
