BPA is used in many common plastics.
Environmental exposure to a widespread compound used to make common
plastic food containers and baby bottles and to line tin cans interferes
with cell division in the eggs of female mice, according to research.
If cell division is disturbed, it can result in aneuploidy, or an
abnormal number of chromosomes in the eggs. This condition is the
leading cause of mental retardation and birth defects in humans,
including Down syndrome.
Even extremely low levels of the compound, called Bisphenol A (BPA),
produced genetic abnormalities, according to researchers. BPA exhibits
hormone-like properties and imitates the effects of naturally occurring
estrogens.
Researchers began to study BPA after normal mice began to display
genetic abnormalities that are typically uncommon. The defects were
linked to plastic cages and water bottles that had been cleaned with a
harsh detergent, causing BPA to leak from the plastic.
Researchers then determined how much BPA the mice had been exposed to
and how small a dose would produce effects. An extremely small dose of
20 parts/billion daily for five to seven days was enough to produce
effects.
Researchers are uncertain of the effect of BPA on humans, however they
noted that mice and humans have a very similar cell division program for
eggs.
Previous studies have suggested that exposing animals in the womb to
levels of BPA similar to those found in the environment disrupts their
sperm count, prostate and testicular development. However, other
studies, some funded by the plastics industry, have not found any risks
associated with BPA exposure.
Some experts say that, taken together, study results suggest that
efforts to begin reducing human exposure to BPA are warranted.

Gov't Says 41 Million Have Pre-Diabetes

WASHINGTON (AP) - Millions more Americans than previously thought have
signs of what could later turn into diabetes, the government says.
"We need to help Americans take steps to prevent diabetes or we will
risk being overwhelmed by the health and economic consequences of an
ever-growing diabetes epidemic."
They simply do not know how to prevent diabetes in a simple manner!

FDA Adds Possible New Risks of Bowel Drug

WASHINGTON (AP) - Some users of the irritable-bowel treatment Zelnorm
have suffered diarrhea so serious they require hospitalization, and four
have died from an intestinal problem, the government said Wednesday.
The Food and Drug Administration stressed that it has not proved a link
between the intestinal condition, called ischemic colitis, and the drug.
But the agency ordered that a precaution about the intestinal condition
go on Zelnorm's label, along with a larger warning about severe
diarrhea.
Irritable bowel syndrome is a mysterious disorder that gives millions of
people, mostly women, abdominal pain and either severe diarrhea or
constipation or both. Zelnorm is the only FDA-approved therapy for the
constipation-causing form of the ailment. It is supposed to be used only
by women.
The drug speeds the colon's movement of stools, so diarrhea is a
potential side effect. But the FDA has 21 reports of diarrhea so severe
that it caused such complications as low blood pressure and fainting.
Sixteen patients required hospitalization, said the FDA's Dr. Robert
Justice.
Zelnorm should not be used by anyone who frequently experiences
diarrhea, and should be stopped immediately if patients get dizzy or
faint, the FDA said.
As for the intestinal inflammation, there were no cases of ischemic
colitis in studies of 7,000 Zelnorm patients. But since Zelnorm went on
sale in 2002, the FDA has received 20 reports of ischemic colitis, plus
three reports of a similar intestinal problem, Justice said. Fourteen
patients were hospitalized. Four died, although they had numerous other
serious medical conditions, he said.
The FDA advised patients who experience new or worsened abdominal pain
or blood in their stools - ischemic colitis symptoms - to stop taking
the drug and call a doctor.
In a statement Wednesday, officials with Novartis Pharmaceuticals in New
Jersey stressed that "no causal link between the administration of
Zelnorm and ischemic colitis has been established." Novartis added that
reports of serious consequences of diarrhea and ischemic colitis have
been rare.
The company said it is working closely with FDA to revise prescribing
information for Zelnorm.
Several years ago, cases of ischemic colitis derailed sales of a drug,
Lotronex, that treats diarrhea-predominant IBS.
LENA'S NOTE:If memory serves me right in 2002 I wrote, in
this very ezine, that this was a bad medicine and would not solve the
IBS problem, but of course it takes much longer and many more
catastrophes before the drug industry admits the ill effects of

Appropriations where Dr. Julie Louise Gerberding openly
testified to the agency's continued lack of planning and action
regarding certain vaccines that contain mercury.
"In 1999 and 2001 the FDA and IOM (respectively) urged
manufacturers to remove thimerosal from infant vaccines and that
children and pregnant women avoid thimerosal," said Michael
Bender, Director of the Mercury Policy Project. "The CDC should
not be trying to roll back the clock and keep America's children
vulnerable to mercury."
"Five years of CDC, FDA, EPA and NIH inaction in the face of
scientific evidence detailing the dangers mercury poses to our
children, has forced Congress to step in because these agencies
have failed to fulfill their obligation to prevent further
damage to our children," stated Alan Clark, M.D., of the
Missouri-based NoMercury.org.
"SafeMinds plans on making its scientific research on this
matter available to interested members of Congress so they can
be fully educated on this bill and the dangers with Thimerosal
(mercury)," offered Redwood. "Frankly, it should have been a
no-brainer decision to stop injecting our infants with a lethal
toxic chemical, but apparently it wasn't to the CDC."
