Could Calcium and Vitamin D Cause Brain Lesions?
May 2, 2007

(Ivanhoe Newswire) -- Consuming high levels of calcium and vitamin D may lead to greater volumes of brain lesions in elderly people. Brain lesions are damaged regions in the brain that can increase the risk of developing dementia, depression, cognitive impairment and stroke.

Researchers from Duke University in North Carolina and the University of North Carolina studied MRI scans from 232 men and women between ages 60 and 86. The average age of people in the study was 71. All subjects had pre-existing brain lesions of various sizes, including the very small ones often found in older people, who are still considered healthy. Researchers report the MRI scans of the people who reported ingesting more calcium and vitamin D showed higher volumes of brain lesions.

Other medical conditions, including age and hypertension, can also contribute to the presence of brain lesions and were taken into account in the study. These factors did not affect the strong relationship between high calcium and vitamin D intake and total lesion volume. Although high overall fat intake was not a significant factor in the study, researchers did find more brain lesions in those who consumed more high-fat dairy products.

Calcium is well-known for its positive effects on bone health, but it also helps in the functioning of nerve and muscle cells. When too much calcium becomes incorporated into bone-like deposits in the blood vessel walls, a loss of elasticity and narrowing of blood vessels can result. Vitamin D may further increase the arterial calcification by regulating calcium retention and activity. If this process affects blood vessels in the brain, lesions may form from that damage.

Since this study was part of a longitudinal study of late-life depression, almost half of the subjects had previously been diagnosed with depression. This factor did not appear to influence the relationship between calcium, vitamin D and brain lesions. The researchers will continue to study older patients, both with and without depression, and the possible effects high calcium and vitamin D intake have on brain lesions.

LENA'S COMMENT: I find this a very troubling report simply because it is reported as fact but yet the 3rd paragraph negates the writer's premise? I guess they needed something to write about or someone felt the need to publish something! All I can tell you is that; anything being consumed without necessity can be dangerous and that includes calcium and vitamin D supplements. Also a minerals imbalance - calcium being one - makes for the danger of one or more minerals being out of balance that will affect the whole body's ability to absorb vitamins properly and that includes the brain, which drives all the organs and thinking power!

Omissions Con't;

Omission #7. The acid-alkaline balance (pH) of tissue fluid is controlled by minerals.

Omission #8. All elements work together as a collective whole. If there is a shortage of just one mineral, the balance of the entire bodily activity can be thrown awry. A deficiency of one mineral may disrupt the entire chain of life, rendering other nutrients you take either useless or inefficient.

"Senior moments" are not usually signs of Alzheimer's disease!

Experts in aging say those kinds of memory lapses --the where-did-I-put-my-car-keys moments-- are universal by late middle age. And they arise from a different part of the brain than the region involved in the forgetfulness that is symptomatic of Alzheimer's, according to a Boston Globe article.

People with Alzheimer's usually cannot recall ordinary nouns , -- like a fork or radio -- and they're less aware of their forgetfulness, say the experts.

And the one test of what type of forgetfulness you experience involves your reaction when you finally remember where you put the keys.

If you have a sense of recollection -- "Oh, yes, the phone rang and I put them on the table" -- chances are about 95 percent that you're normal.

On the other hand, says Marilyn Albert, director of gerontology research at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, "People in the early stages of Alzheimer's tend not to have that sense of recollection, even when they're reminded."

FOOD OF THE WEEK
~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^

A spice that is really a fruit?

This week's fruit is a bit different and most people have no clue that it is a fruit but is a berry.

Known as Jamaican Pepper, Myrtle Pepper, Pimento, Newspice, and Clove Pepper but most commonly called Allspice! A "dried unripe berry" of the Pimenta dioica, which belongs to the family Myrtaceae.

The tree grows to a height of about 30 ft and has aromatic, glossy green leaves and white flowers. The fruit, when dried, is widely used as a spice. Its wood was once in such demand for the making of walking sticks that the tree became endangered and was nearly driven to extinction.

Spanish explorers happened on to the Allspice plant in Jamaica in the beginning of the 16th century.  The Spaniards thought the fruits look like pepper so they gave it the name of Jamaican Pepper and pimento from the word "pimienta", Spanish for peppercorn.

The English name "Allspice" was given because the spice is said to have the aroma of several spices including cloves, pepper and even cinnamon and nutmeg.

The green Allspice berries are picked and then dried.  They are very high in eugenol which is the main flavoring substance of the berry.

Allspice is used to treat indigestion, flatulence, and muscle pain. Allspice is an antioxidant, antifungal, and anti-inflammatory to reduce pain and inflammation. It contains Vitamins C, B-1, B-2 and beta carotene along with a few minerals. Allspice is sometimes added to commercial medicines to improve their flavor.

Folklore has it that for centuries the Mayan Indians used Allspice to embalm the bodies of important leaders.

Allspice is available as whole berries or ground.  Grinding your own whole berries will provide the most intense flavor and longest shelf life.

Allspice is used in seasonings, sauces, sausages, ketchup, jams, pumpkin, gravies, roasts, hams, baked goods, and teas. Caribbean cooking relies on Allspice as the main ingredient in jerk seasoning. It is used in Caribbean, Mexican, Indian, English, and North American cooking and in seasoning blends such as jerk seasoning and curry. Allspice can be used in just about any food you can think of adding nutrients, flavor and taste.

Substitute one teaspoon ground allspice for the equivalent of approximately 5 whole berries.

Enjoy this strange fruit/spice,

Lena

Studies Tie Drugs, Unusual Heart Rhythms
May 2, 2007
By JEFF DONN

BOSTON (AP) - Two research reports suggest a possible link between two bone-building drugs and irregular heart rhythms in a small number of women who take the medicine.

The signs of a problem were more pronounced with Reclast, a drug made by Novartis AG (NVS) and given through a once-a-year, 15-minute intravenous infusion. But there was a hint of similar trouble in a few women who took the leading osteoporosis pill, Fosamax by Merck & Co. (MRK) The two drugs are in the same class.

The safety question caught researchers by surprise. While uncertain how big a worry it might be, they agreed the overall risk is small. Specialists said women at high risk for bone breaks - the main target of these osteoporosis drugs - should keep taking them as prescribed.

But several experts said they'd be cautious about those who also are at risk for a condition called atrial fibrillation, an irregular heart rhythm that can cause strokes.

The two separate reports published Thursday in The New England Journal of Medicine point to elevated rates of serious episodes of that heart condition in women who took Reclast and Fosamax.

"For the first time, there may be a side effect," said a researcher involved in both studies, Dr. Steven Cummings of California Pacific Medical Center Research Institute. Until now, people have assumed Fosamax "was completely safe and could be given to almost anybody."

Fosamax, the Merck brand name for alendronate, is now used by an estimated 1.8 million American women. In a letter to the medical journal, Cummings reported evidence of the heart problem found in a recent review of a 1997 Merck-sponsored study of postmenopausal women on Fosamax.

There appeared to be 50 percent more risk of the serious heart rhythm in women who took the daily pill than among those who didn't take it. About half of the 6,459 women took Fosamax, and 47 developed atrial fibrillation, compared to just 31 cases among the other women.

However, the finding, while not statistically definitive for Fosamax, worried some researchers because it is in line with the results of a new study published in the same issue of the medical journal.

This study of 7,736 postmenopausal women with bone-thinning osteoporosis focuses on Reclast. Novartis recently won approval to sell Reclast, known generically as zoledronic acid, for Paget's disease, another bone condition. The company hopes to get an OK later this year to sell it for osteoporosis use.

The new study, funded by Novartis, shows that Reclast works at least as well as existing drugs in the same class, researchers say. However, the risk of a serious case of irregular heart rhythm was more than double that in the other patients - 50 cases in the drug-taking half, compared to 20 cases in the others.

Researchers cautioned about overestimating the importance of the heart rhythm problem. The Reclast study showed little apparent difference in overall cardiac deaths and the overall risk of the rhythm condition remained small.

Doctors made available by Merck and Novartis said the side effect could be a statistical fluke or just a product of aging. They said earlier studies showed no sign of the possible side effect.

For now, it's unknown if the possible risk applies to other drugs in the class known as biphosphonates. Future studies are expected to help clarify the risk.

Arctic Ice Cap Melting 30 Years Ahead of Forecast
by Deborah Zabarenko, Environment Correspondent
May 2, 2007

WASHINGTON - The Arctic ice cap is melting much faster than expected and is now about 30 years ahead of predictions made by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, a US ice expert said on Tuesday.

This means the ocean at the top of the world could be free or nearly free of summer ice by 2020, three decades sooner than the global panel's gloomiest forecast of 2050.

No ice on the Arctic Ocean during summer would be a major spur to global warming, said Ted Scambos, a glaciologist at the National Snow and Ice Center in Colorado.

"Right now ... the Arctic helps keep the Earth cool," Scambos said in a telephone interview. "Without that Arctic ice, or with much less of it, the Earth will warm much faster."

That is because the ice reflects light and heat; when it is gone, the much darker land or sea will absorb more light and heat, making it more difficult for the planet to cool down, even in winter, he said.

Scambos and co-authors of the study, published in the journal Geophysical Research Letters, used satellite data and visual confirmation of Arctic ice to reach their conclusions, a far different picture than that obtained from computer models used by the scientists of the intergovernmental panel.

"The IPCC report was very careful, very thorough and cautious, so they erred on the side of what would certainly occur as opposed to what might occur," Scambos said in a telephone interview.

ICE-FREE SUMMER

The wide possibility of what might occur included a much later melt up north, or a much earlier one, Scambos said.

"It appears we're on pace about 30 years earlier than expected to reach a state where we don't have sea ice or at least not very much in late summer in the Arctic Ocean," he said.

He discounted the notion that the sharp warming trend in the Arctic might be due to natural climate cycles. "There aren't many periods in history that are this dramatic in terms of natural variability," Scambos said.

He said he had no doubt that this was caused in large part by greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, which he said was the only thing capable of changing Earth on such a large scale over so many latitudes.

Asked what could fix the problem -- the topic of a new report by the intergovernmental panel to be released on Friday in Bangkok -- Scambos said a large volcanic eruption might hold Arctic ice melting at bay for a few years.

But he saw a continued warm-up as inevitable in the coming decades.

"Long-term and for the next 50 years, I think even the new report will agree that we're in for quite a bit of warming," Scambos said.

"We just barely now, I think, have enough time and enough collective will to be able to get through this century in good shape, but it means we have to start acting now and in a big way."
