Today I celebrate my anniversary of 30 years without cancer
sticks, cigarettes. I for the life of me cannot imagine why I ever
smoked those things. I am so thankful that I am healthy without residual
side effects that can happen even after quitting so long ago. With over
2,000 drugs in those cancer sticks it is a miracle that anyone who
smokes survives a year much less many years.
On our drive to and from Phoenix Monday, the splendor of the
desert was in it's brilliant once a year color. I am not a fan of the
desert but this time of the year it is beautiful. The Palo Verde trees
aglow in yellow blooms, the saguaro and Ocotillo cacti blooming with
other assorted purple, yellow and red wild flowers and you cannot
help but love it then. I am thankful to have the opportunity to be able
to see and recognize the beauty. It's been five years since my eye
surgeries brought me out of the darkness of congenital cataracts that
had blinded me and I see things much more thankfully now than I did

Here we still have cold nights with the risk of frost up to the
first of June but I think this year, as last, we are into summer full

warming has definitely hit our part of the world! People are running
around sneezing, sniffling and runny eyes and nose brought about by the
pollen in the air. Counter act that with natural alternatives and not

Study: U.S. Health Care Not Always Best
WASHINGTON (AP) - A new study challenges a widely held view in the
United States that Americans have the best medical care in the world.
A review of health care in the United States and four other
industrialized, English-speaking countries, published Tuesday in the
journal Health Affairs, found that the United States leads in some areas
and trails in others.
Breast cancer survival rates were higher in the United States than in
Australia, Canada, England and New Zealand, the report says, citing
health data through 2000. American women also were screened for cervical
cancer at a higher rate than women in the other countries.
Yet the United States was the only country that registered a rise in
deaths from asthma. The rate of infection from hepatitis B also was
highest in the United States.
"No country scores consistently the best or worst overall, and each
country has at least one area of care where it could learn from
international experience," the study said.
Although health care experts are increasingly aware of gaps in the
quality of care, the report notes that U.S. politicians frequently
state, as President Bush did in his State of the Union address in
January, "Americans have the best medical care in the world."
The authors - U.S. academics and international health care officials -
say they want to spur debate about health care priorities rather than
draw conclusions that explain the differences.
A related report in Health Affairs examines why the United States spends
far more on health care than any other nation, and whether the country
can afford it.
Authors Uwe Reinhardt of Princeton University and Peter Hussey and
Gerard Anderson of Johns Hopkins University conclude that health
insurance will become increasingly unaffordable to lower-income workers,
forcing lawmakers to choose between some form of universal health care
and a system in which there is a stark difference in the quality of care
based on ability to pay.

Hands-on manipulation for healing is probably older than any other
healing tradition. The oldest written records of massage go back three
thousand years to China, but of course it is much older than that. Touch
and the laying on of hands are human tendencies that seem to be in our
genetic makeup.
Physicians and healers of all forms and from all cultures have used
hands-on manipulation throughout history as an integral part of health
care practice. In the former Soviet countries, Germany, Japan, and
China, massage has continued uninterrupted as massage therapists today
work alongside doctors as part of the health care team.
In modern Germany massage therapy is covered by national health
insurance. In China it is fully integrated into the health care system,
where the hospitals have massage wards. In one Shanghai hospital the
massage department covers two floors.
In this country, the medical use of massage began to diminish in the
early part of this century with the evolution of pharmaceutical,
surgical, and technological medicine. It reached a nadir in the 1930s,
40s, and 50s because it was considered too time intensive for the modern
physician. Massage therapy duties were gradually handed over to aides,
who eventually became the physical therapists of the modern era.

Glutathione (GSH) is one of the strongest Anti-Carcinogens and

BUYING ASPARAGUS: Select asparagus with tight tips (pass if the
tips are loose), and minimum of woody white stalk at the bottom.
Wrinkled or pithing stalks indicate age and dehydration and the taste
may not be as good. When asparagus is fresh, there is no difference in
taste or texture between thin and fat stalks (no matter what you've
heard!).
Cooking Asparagus: Since most of asparagus nutrients are in the
tip, it's best to cook it upright in a tall container. Tie the asparagus
in a bunch after cleaning, place in standing position in 1-2 inches of
boiling water. Cook just until stalks soften.
If you don't have a pan tall enough, try this: make a very light butter
sautéing a wide, flat pan. Cool. Add a touch of water and heat. Lay the
washed wet asparagus in, cover and steam or simmer for 3 to 4 minutes.
I have a steamer that I lay the cleaned asparagus in and steam, without
butter or water, for about 5 minutes for crunchy goodness. Sprinkle with
seasoned rice vinegar or lemon juice for a real treat!
Utah Company's Suit Challenges Ephedra Ban
May 4, 2004
SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - Nutraceutical Corp. and its subsidiary
Solaray have filed a federal court lawsuit challenging the Food
and Drug Administration's ban on dietary supplements containing
ephedra.
It was the second suit challenging the FDA ban. A New Jersey
ephedra manufacturer, NVE Pharmaceuticals Inc., tried to head
off the nationwide ban on the herbal stimulant before it took
effect April 12, arguing that ephedra, the main ingredient in
its diet supplement, is safe if used as directed.
A federal judge denied NVE's request, meaning the ban will stay
in place until the two lawsuits can be considered. No trial
dates have been set.
A FDA spokeswoman said Tuesday the agency does not comment on
pending litigation.
Ephedrine supplements were widely used for weight loss and
bodybuilding, but have linked to 155 deaths, including that of
Baltimore Orioles pitcher Steve Bechler. The FDA's ban on all
dietary supplements containing ephedrine alkaloids went into
effect April 12.
Nutraceutical, a dietary supplements company based in Park City,
claims in the lawsuit filed Monday in U.S. District Court that
ephedra "has been safely consumed for millennia."
The company contends its product is safe because it contains
only low doses of the ephedrine alkaloid.
The lawsuit claims that the FDA did not meet its burden of
proving that all ephedrine dietary supplements present "a
significant or unreasonable risk of illness or injury at every
dose level and as labeled."
It also contends that banning dietary supplements but allowing
ephedrine-containing conventional foods is "an arbitrary and
capricious agency action."
The suit seeks to have the FDA's rule declared illegal. It asks
that if the court does not find the rule to be illegal, then it
rule that Nutraceutical's loss be considered a "taking," which
would require the government to pay compensation.
In a similar case, U.S. District Judge Joel Pisano in Newark,
N.J., refused to grant a temporary restraining order that would
have prevented the FDA from banning the products.
LENA'S NOTE: Ephedra has less health side effects than
even aspirin but has aspirin been removed for our health? No!
Drug industry pushed for the outlaw of ephedra and won but let's
hope sane heads see the irony of it all eventually!
BALTIMORE (AP) - The poultry industry's widespread use of drugs to raise
chickens is exposing people who eat them to more arsenic than previously
estimated, according to a researcher at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg
School of Public Health.
In a paper published Monday in the journal Environmental Health
Perspectives, Ellen K. Silbergeld said arsenic-laced drugs intended to
keep the birds healthy might pose an increased risk of cancer for
consumers. She also said the drugs could create manure that is
contaminating Eastern Shore ground water.
Silbergeld's research essentially disputed the conclusions of a U.S.
Department of Agriculture study, released in the journal in January,
which concluded that the drugs did not pose a serious health problem.
She said the Agriculture Department underestimated the amount of arsenic
found in chickens and used outdated data to estimate the health risks of
ingesting arsenic.
"This paper had serious problems," Silbergeld said of the USDA report.
Her findings, based on data published by the USDA and other health
experts, could have major implications for the Eastern Shore, where 10
percent of the nation's poultry is raised.
A spokesman for the poultry industry said concerns about arsenic in
chicken feed are unfounded and that tests consistently show arsenic
levels in chickens are well below standards set by the Food and Drug
Administration.
"This study appears to be much ado about nothing," Richard Lobb, a
spokesman for the National Chicken Council, told The (Baltimore) Sun.
But Silbergeld, a toxicologist who won a MacArthur Foundation "genius"
grant in 1993 for her work linking mercury poisoning with infectious
diseases, disagreed. She said arsenic in chicken feed creates potential
problems in the meat produced and the ground water affected by the
waste.
When chickens excrete arsenic in manure, sunlight breaks it down and it
migrates to the soil, where it can contaminate ground water supplies,
she said. She noted that Europe bans arsenic in chicken feed because of
these health concerns.
"This is arsenic. We shouldn't lose sight of the sheer outrageousness of
this," Silbergeld said.
Geologists have been closely monitoring arsenic levels in the Eastern
Shore's water supply for years without finding serious hazards. Health
officials in Queen Anne's, Talbot and Dorchester counties require new
wells to be tested for arsenic because of concerns about contamination
of the local aquifers, said David Bolton, program director of the
hydrogeology section of the Maryland Geological Survey.
A recent U.S. Geological Survey study of the Pocomoke River Basin found
slightly elevated levels of arsenic in shallow layers of ground water
that could be the result of tainted manure, said Tracy Connell Hancock,
a USGS hydrologist.
But she and Bolton said further studies are needed to prove any
connection between the manure and arsenic in the water.
"Whether arsenic gets into the ground water from chicken waste is an
open question that people are just beginning to investigate," Hancock
said.
