An Anniversary today: 30 years ago today I set out to become a non smoker... I succeeded and cannot figure out why I ever smoked... No nutritional value, killed my digestive tract, cost a lot of money, stunk up myself and my home, put my family and friends at risk health wise??? Just a few reasons it was a stupid and dumb thing to do... At the age of twelve I made a decision to smoke, but did not indulge until I graduated high school. You would think they learned with their keeping facts secret about Vioxx but guess not!

A New England Journal of Medicine report that linked Fosamax (and other drugs in a class of pharmaceuticals known as bisphosphonates) with ocular inflammation. When untreated, this condition causes blurred vision, swelling and even blindness.

The Florida lawsuit highlights another unusual bisphosphonate side effect: osteonecrosis of the jaw; also known as "jaw necrosis" or "jaw death," prompted by a loss of blood supply to the jawbone. The suit has been filed on behalf of 250 Fosamax users who developed this condition.

The AP article notes that Merck representatives responded to the suit by stating that no cases of osteonecrosis of the jaw were reported among more than 17,000 subjects in clinical trials. Nevertheless, in January 2005 the FDA directed Merck to update the Fosamax label with a warning about the side effect. The company complied later in the year, but the lawsuit claims that the warning is not sufficient.

According to the Fosamax web site, other side effects include inflammation and ulceration of the esophagus, painful swallowing, stomach pain, indigestion and nausea.

Numbness may occur with statins

I have been plagued with numbness in both legs from the knees down. My cardiologist referred me to a neurologist, who found nothing conclusive. I have the impression that this problem may be related to the statins I take for my cholesterol. What alternatives do I have?

Statin-type drugs such as Crestor, Lipitor, Pravachol and Zocor are effective for lowering cholesterol, but some people do experience nerve damage. Peripheral neuropathy is considered a rare side effect of statins (American Journal of Cardiology, Supplement 1, April 17). Symptoms may include numbness as well as sensations of prickling, tingling or burning in the extremities.

For people who cannot tolerate statins, either because of muscle or joint pain, peripheral neuropathy or some other side effect, there are other medications that can lower cholesterol effectively. They include niacin, WelChol, Tricor and Zetia.

LENA'S COMMENT: I've seen and heard this so many times yet the medical world has not a clue as to what is causing it... NO it is not a rare side effect as these pharmacist seems to think! Remember Wednesday's Health Tips? There lies the answer to this person's question... Check out the side effects for the drugs these two pharmacists suggested and you will find they are not really better than the statin drugs as the same side effects are listed for them as well!! Niacin is the closest thing to safe in a prescribed drug that exists and it has problems simply because it's manmade chemical. Elevated cholesterol, unless the blood is white with fat, is not a problem to your body. No data exists to prove that ideology!

1 clove garlic
½ cup almonds, cashews, or other nuts
1 cup packed fresh cilantro leaves

Global Warming Cited in Wind Shift

NEW YORK (AP) - An important wind circulation pattern over the Pacific Ocean has begun to weaken because of global warming caused by human activity, something that could alter climate and the marine food chain in the region, new research suggests.

It's not clear what climate changes might arise in the area or possibly beyond, but the long-term effect might resemble some aspects of an El Nino event, a study author said.

El Ninos boost rainfall in the southern United States and western South America and bring dry weather or even drought to Indonesia, Malaysia and elsewhere in the western Pacific.

As for the Pacific food chain near the equator, the slowdown might reduce populations of tiny plants and animals up through the fish that eat them, because of reduced nutrition welling up from the deep, said the author, Gabriel Vecchi.

Vecchi, a visiting scientist at a National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration lab in Princeton, N.J., and colleagues present their results in Thursday's issue of the journal Nature.

The slowdown was detected in shipboard and land-based data going back to the mid-1800s. It matches an effect predicted by computer climate simulations that trace global warming to a build-up of heat-trapping greenhouse gases, the researchers report. But simulations that consider only natural influences fail to produce the observed slowdown, Vecchi said.

So, it appears the slowdown is largely due to the man-made buildup of greenhouse gases, the researchers concluded. And the result lends more credibility to computer models that trace global warming to greenhouse gases, at least for their ability to forecast what will happen in the tropics, Vecchi said.

The study focused on what scientists call the Walker circulation, a huge wind pattern that covers almost half the circumference of Earth.

The pattern traces a huge loop. Trade winds blow across the Pacific from east to west. The air rises in the western Pacific and then returns eastward at an altitude of a few miles. Then it sinks back to the surface and starts the loop again.

The new study is based on barometric pressure readings, since differences in air pressure drive winds near the equator. Results suggest the average wind speed in the Walker circulation has weakened by about 3.5 percent since the mid-1800s. It has weakened faster since World War II than in the long-term trend since the mid-1800s, Vecchi said.

Computer simulations say the circulation might weaken another 10 percent by 2100, Vecchi said.

Dennis Hartmann, a professor of atmospheric sciences at the University of Washington, said the study makes a strong case that the Walker circulation has slowed. While such an effect had been predicted as a result of global warming, he said, "it's not been demonstrated before as clearly as they've done here."
