Lyme Disease at Highest Level Since 2002

ATLANTA (AP) - Lyme disease has climbed to its highest level on record
in the United States, in part because of the building of more and more
homes in the woods, the government reported Thursday.
During 2002, a total of 23,763 cases were reported to the Centers for
Disease Control and Prevention - up 40 percent from the previous year.
"It is alarming to us," said Dr. Erin Staples, a CDC researcher. "People
really have to know they can reduce their risk of Lyme disease."
Lyme disease bacteria are transmitted to humans by ticks that are
carried by deer. The CDC attributed the rise in cases to growing
populations of deer that support deer ticks, more homes being built in
wooded areas and better recognition and reporting of the disease.
Lyme disease was named in 1977 when a cluster was identified in Lyme,
Conn. The 2002 cases were mainly in the Northeast, mid-Atlantic and
north-central states. Only Hawaii, Montana and Oklahoma reported no
cases in 2002.
People can lower their risk of getting the disease by using insect
repellent and promptly removing ticks from the body, the CDC said.
The disease is often identified by an expanding "bulls-eye" rash that
develops days to weeks after a tick bite. Other symptoms include
tiredness, fever, muscle aches and joint pain.
If untreated, the disease can cause joint swelling and brain
inflammation.

AGs Call for Prescription Drug Importation

BOSTON (AP) - Attorneys general from 18 states, including Connecticut,
sent a letter to Health and Human Services Secretary Tommy Thompson on
Wednesday, asking him to allow states to import low-cost prescription
drugs from Canada.
The letter came a day after Thompson said that legalizing prescription
drug imports was inevitable and that he would advise President Bush not
to stand in the way of legislation making its way through Congress that
would clear the way for imports.
In the letter, the attorneys general urge Thompson to "act immediately
to help provide our citizens with affordable prescription drugs while
ensuring drug safety."
The letter, which was signed by Massachusetts Attorney General Thomas
Reilly, asks Thompson to allow state to be appointed as licensed
wholesalers or allow them to contract with licensed wholesalers to
import prescription drugs from Canada.
All drugs would be manufactured in facilities approved by the Food and
Drug Administration and shipped to the United States from Canada in
their original packaging. Special tracking technologies would be used to
guard against counterfeit drugs, the letter said.
"We believe that, with the assistance of the Food and Drug
Administration, the undersigned states can work with the Canadian
authorities to develop a process for the safe importation of
prescription drugs," the attorneys general wrote.
On Tuesday, Thompson said drug imports would help American consumers,
but warned the move would be expensive because regulators, to ensure
safety, would have to increase inspections of foreign pharmaceutical
plants and packaging of prescription drugs entering this country.
Several bills are pending in Congress to permit drug imports from Canada
and elsewhere.
Officials in Springfield estimate that the city has saved $2 million in
the nine months since it started buying prescription drugs from Canada
for city employees and retirees.
Besides Reilly, attorney generals from Arizona, California, Colorado,
Connecticut, Illinois, Iowa, Maine, Maryland, Mississippi, New
Hampshire, New Mexico, New York, Ohio, Oregon, Rhode Island, Vermont and
Wisconsin also signed the letter.
Nearly two-thirds of those surveyed in a recent AP poll said the
government should make it easier to buy cheaper drugs from Canada or
other countries.

A lead apron to protect the reproductive organs may not be
enough to protect a developing baby when her mother has dental
x-rays. Researchers at the University of Washington analyzed the
pregnancies of 5,585 women and found that those who had received
dental x-rays were more than 3 times more likely to deliver a
low birth weight baby at term. The full results of the study
were published in the April 28, 2004 Journal of the American
Medical Association. Current guidelines on x-rays during
pregnancy are based on the idea that only direct radiation to
the reproductive organs is a problem. This study suggests that
even very-low-dose radiation to a mother's head and neck can
stunt her baby's growth, perhaps by affecting her thyroid gland.
We know that a pregnant mother's thyroid hormone is important
for her baby's physical and mental growth. Overall, about 1 in
10 women in the U.S. get dental x-rays while pregnant. While
clean teeth and gums are important during pregnancy, I don't
recommend any unnecessary x-rays while pregnant, even
very-low-dose x-rays of the mouth.

FDA to Probe Cancer Potential of Furan

WASHINGTON (AP) - The Food and Drug Administration will investigate
whether a chemical that can cause cancer at high doses in mice and rats
can pose a risk to people at the very low levels in which it is found in
many common foods.
The chemical, furan, probably is harmless as a part of food, but new
technology allows scientists to look for its presence in tiny amounts,
said Terry Troxell, director of FDA's office of plant and dairy foods.
Because the chemical has been linked to a form of liver cancer in the
animals, FDA is assessing the potential for a risk to people, he said.
"We did preliminary estimates of consumer exposure, and this appears to
be well below levels we would expect to cause harmful effects," Troxell
said. "Based on that, we feel there is no evidence consumers should
alter eating habits to avoid exposure to furan."
Troxell said previous research indicates furan can't cause cancer if it
is present below some minimum level, but what that level could be is not
known. The agency has scheduled a meeting of a scientific advisory
committee on June 8 to bring together what is known about furan.
Furan is made by heating sugars, including cooking sugar with protein,
as well as by heating carbohydrates, FDA said. Its preliminary analysis
was able to detect furan at levels as low as 2 parts per billion in
coffee and some juices. Furan was found at varying higher levels in
products including baby foods, spaghetti sauces, canned soups, creamed
corn and baked beans.
The agency plans to test more foods for the presence of furan and to
estimate the potential risk from the amounts of furan in those foods,
Troxell said.
Furan evaporates easily, but it can be found in products sealed in cans
and jars, Troxell said.
Processed foods are not the only possible source, said Richard Jarman,
vice president for food and environmental policy at the National Food
Processors Association, a trade group. Furans are created by cooking,
and might well be found in products other than canned goods once
scientists hunt for them, he said.
Jarman said the FDA was doing the right thing by trying to assess the
potential risk. But he said he doubted there would turn out to be a
public health concern in a chemical created in food by something as
common to humanity as the use of fire. http://www.fda.gov
