Greetings and thank you for subscribing!  I do hope your weekend will be a restful and relaxing one!

Great! It's my lucky Friday the 13th! Yes, I know some people are superstitious and think its unlucky but I know that we make it lucky or unlucky and I've chosen to make it lucky! Life is choices and we make them on what we have been taught from either our parents or life. My mother and mother-in-law were so superstitious that it drove me nuts so therefore I have chosen to ignore those things and it's worked for me for 67 years and I suspect will continue to work.  I worked very hard to teach my children to ignore their grandmothers superstitions and it seems to have worked well for them as well... I do what I know will help me to be the healthiest I can be and stay away from those things that will not be good for me.  My choices seem to work for me... What choices have you made?

Study Provides New Data on Heart Attacks
May 12, 2005
By LINDA A. JOHNSON

People whose hearts beat too fast during rest and too sluggishly during exercise have a greater risk than others of dropping dead suddenly from a heart attack, a study suggests.

The research, believed to be the first on sudden death in healthy people, relied on simple stress tests like the ones often given to people with heart problems.

Experts said the findings don't mean healthy people should have routine stress tests. But they said that when heart patients get the tests, doctors should study the heart rate pattern for signs of trouble and not just look for evidence of blocked arteries as most do now.

"We know there are people who are walking time bombs," said Dr. Michael S. Lauer, a staff cardiologist at the Cleveland Clinic who was not involved in the latest study but who also researches stress tests and how patients fare over time. While there's no proof early intervention prevents premature deaths in such people, he said, "I would fix absolutely everything that can be fixed."

That would include putting patients on medicines such as aspirin and drugs to control blood pressure and cholesterol, and starting them on an exercise program to tone up the heart.

The latest study, in Thursday's New England Journal of Medicine, found the risk of sudden death was about four times higher than normal in men whose hearts beat fast while resting or didn't speed up as much as they should during exercise. Likewise, sudden death was twice as likely in men whose heart rates didn't slow down enough in the minute after exercise ended, compared with men with normal shifts in their heart rate.

"It's the first time that particular heart rate pattern during exercise is associated with increased risk of sudden death" in healthy men, said lead researcher Dr. Xavier Jouven, associate professor of cardiology and epidemiology at European Georges Pompidou Hospital in Paris.

The results are similar to earlier findings on people with heart disease.

Sudden death occurs when a heart attack, or sometimes an abnormal rhythm, stops the heart. It strikes people as young as their 30s and 40s, and is responsible for 5 percent to 10 percent of all U.S. deaths, or roughly 350,000 to 500,000 deaths a year.

The French study followed 5,713 middle-aged, male French civil servants who had stress tests during physical exams between 1967-72. Over an average 23-year followup, 83 died of sudden cardiac death, on average within 11 1/2 years.

The men who died of sudden cardiac death were only capable of exercising about six minutes, a minute less than the others in the study; also, one in five had lost a parent to sudden death.

The high-risk group had a resting heart rate of more than 75 beats per minute, slightly faster than normal. During exercise, their heart rate increased less than 89 beats per minute, and after exercise stopped, their heart rate decreased less than 25 beats in the minute.

The results probably also apply to women, said Lauer and Dr. Daniel Shindler, a cardiologist and professor at Robert Wood Johnson Medical School. Recent research shows healthy women whose hearts don't slow down properly after exercise are more likely to die of heart problems.

The apparent cause of such abnormal heart patterns is a malfunction of the parasympathetic nervous system, which is supposed to slow the heart rate back down after danger or stress.

Shindler said the new study will influence which type of drug he prescribes to slow the heart rate in patients found to have this abnormal heart pattern.

Dr. Paul D. Thompson, an American Heart Association spokesman and a cardiologist at Hartford Hospital in Connecticut, said the study could lead to new medicines, but he thinks it will be a while before the stress test is used to spot healthy people at risk of sudden death.

Generally, only people with known or suspected heart disease get stress tests, in which people walk on a treadmill and sensors record their heart's activity. The Frenchmen exercised on stationary bicycles, as is common in Europe.

The New England Journal of Medicine

LENA'S COMMENT: Keeping the heart healthy is a simple matter of 1. exercise, 2. mineral balance, 3. keeping stress under control or at least from stress damage!  Natural supplements can do 2 of the 3...

Reactions: Healthful Oil Can Become a Threat
By ERIC NAGOURNEY
May 10, 2005

Polyunsaturated vegetable oils from plants like soybeans and sunflowers are generally praised by nutritionists because they help people keep their cholesterol down and, it is believed, avoid heart disease.

But a new study reports that when used to fry foods, the oils produce a toxic compound that has been associated with a variety of llnesses, including cardiovascular disease, Parkinson's and Alzheimer's diseases, and liver problems.

The findings, the researchers say, highlight the risk of reheating the oils or reusing them, since the amount of the compound, known as HNE, increases with each heating.

"It adds up," said the lead researcher, Dr. A. Saari Csallany, a professor of food chemistry and nutritional biochemistry at the University of Minnesota.

The study was presented last week at a meeting of the American Oil Chemists' Society. The co-author of the study was Christine Seppanen, a graduate student.

Other studies have shown HNE is absorbed by food cooked in polyunsaturated oil, Dr. Csallany said.

The compound forms when the very component of unsaturated oils that is considered so healthful, linoleic acid, oxidizes. The study reported that three other toxic compounds related to HNE had also been found in heated soybean oil.

The researchers looked at what happened to the oils when they were heated for half an hour or more at 365 degrees. Now they want to study what happens to the oils at lower temperatures.

FOOD OF THE WEEK
~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~

Olea europaea L

When my grandchildren were younger they liked to use this week's food as finger fun. Each finger would have a black or green one slipped on one or both hands and used them as fun food, waving them and plucking one at a time off a finger and into their mouth. Some mom's would find this disgusting but I find that children use all kinds of things for play that can invariably end up good for them just as the olives did for my grandchildren. They are growing up and I don't see that behavior any longer but still fondly remember chiding them that food wasn't a toy but secretly admiring their ability to make fun out of every aspect of life...

The olive - Olea europaea L. - is a subtropical evergreen tree or shrub with leaves that are waxy green on top and grayish green on the bottom. Young bark is green, but older bark is gray. In the Mediterranean, olive trees are known to live for over a thousand years. If the top is damaged, a new tree will sprout from underground parts. The olive tree gives us great food and health nutrients! Olive trees have been cultivated for thousands of years, and were already plentiful during biblical times. The olive can be traced back to Biblical times when a branch in a dove's mouth sent Noah the message that dry ground existed and he and his family could leave the ark. Olives continue to be grown in the Mediterranean area today. The olive was also important to the Greeks and the Romans, who made it a part of their mythologies to celebrate the use of its oil as an essential food and fuel for lamps. The olive leaf extract was also used to prepare the dead for burial.

The conditions for the olive's greatest cultivation is found in Italy and Spain. It was the Spanish who spread the olive to America. Catholic missionaries spread the olive to Mexico and later to California, as well as to South America.

Plucked from the tree, the olive is extremely bitter, and virtually inedible. Prior to eating, olives are typically cured, either in brine, water or in oil. Freshly picked olives can also be stir-fried to remove some of the bitterness before eating.

Known Health Benefits:

FRUIT:
First are the fruits processed and eaten either as ripe or pickled. Olives are most widely used in Italian dishes...

LEAF:
Olive leaf extract has also been studied for its ability to normalize blood pressure.

The most commonly known use of the olive is its oil:

Widely used and best for our health is the oil pressed from ripe fruit... Like other types of vegetable oils, olive oil contains no cholesterol. Organic virgin oil has 120 calories and 14 grams of fat per tablespoon. The olive oil is important in prevention of heart disease. Its high concentration of monounsaturated fatty acids, compounds decrease blood levels of LDL cholesterol - the type associated with plaque build-up in the arteries - and increase levels of protective HDL cholesterol. The higher amount of monounsaturated fatty acids in olive oil is known to help improve your cardiovascular health. Olive oil is classified mainly by the amount of acidity, as well as the flavor, color and aroma. "Extra virgin" olive oil meets the highest standards for low acidity and rich and fruity taste. It should have less than .8% acidity content. "Pure" olive oil has a lighter color and aroma, and is often used as a general, all-purpose olive oil.

About 40% of the calories in the typical Greek diet come from olive oil. To some that looks like a lot of fat, yet this traditional Mediterranean style of eating -- which emphasizes fish, olive oil, whole grains, and fruits and vegetables -- seems to contribute to the favorably low rates of heart disease among people who live in the countries that ring the Mediterranean Sea. Both vitamin E and polyphenols act as antioxidants, inhibiting the development of heart disease by reducing the oxygen-related damage along artery walls. An ingredient in olive oil also appears to make the blood less likely to clot, reducing the chance that an errant blood clot will block an artery and lead to a heart attack or stroke.

In our house you will find olive oil as the only oil used and I make my own butter spread by putting one-half butter and one-half olive oil whip it up and into a container and refrigerate it. You cannot tell the difference and it has no artificial anything to make it unhealthy. Try it you will like it!

Baste With Oil For Sunburn Healing!
© By Lena Sanchez

As summer is coming on in half the world so many head for the beach and sunbathing begins big time! What to do when you stay out too long and over expose to the suns rays?

Sun screens or tanning lotions last very short periods of time leaving you open to burn? Or if you go in the water it's gone and your body is exposed to burning? If you are going to be out more than a hour expect to turn red!

Ultraviolet (UV) radiation in sunlight creates free radicals, which damage DNA in skin cells and trigger abnormal growth, often leading to skin cancer. Antioxidants such as vitamin E mop up these radicals and are thought to protect against UV damage. So Masamitsu Ichihashi and his colleagues from the Kobe University School of  Medicine decided to find out if olive oil, which is a  potent source of antioxidants, provides UV protection.

Head for the grocery store cooking oil section! You will find a great healing oil! Virgin Olive Oil!

APPLYING virgin olive oil to your skin after sunbathing protects you against skin cancer, claim Japanese scientists.  They have found that using it as an after-sun lotion slows tumor growth in mice.

Researchers gave hairless mice three UV sessions a week under a sunlamp. Five minutes after the treatment, they painted their skin with either regular or extra virgin olive oil. After 18 weeks, control mice started to grow skin tumors, and mice treated with regular olive oil fared little better. But mice daubed with virgin olive oil took an extra six weeks to show any sign of cancer. What's more, their tumors were smaller, less frequent and there was less DNA damage to skin cells.

The researchers are quick to point out that olive oil isn't a sunscreen. But they claim that rubbing on olive oil after sunbathing could help protect skin from UV damage.

So if you have had too much sun, spray or rub Virgin Olive oil on for healing damage!

Have a healthy summer.

What Dow Knows (But Won't Tell)
By Shelley Alpern,
May 12, 2005.

At this week's annual stockholder meeting, Dow Chemical will surely tout the fact that its stock has outperformed the S&P 500 for the better part of the last five years. But can a company as environmentally burdened as Dow keep it up? Dow is being sued in the U.S. and overseas for environmental damages that stem from both its core products and from the toxic chemicals that are byproducts of its big manufacturing processes.

Take Dow's dioxin liabilities. Dioxins, which are a byproduct of production of some Dow chemicals, are known to cause cancer, immune suppression, reproductive, developmental and liver damage. A class action lawsuit by Michigan residents is seeking compensation for the contamination. Residents in the region are asserting approximately $100 million in property damages and seeking medical monitoring. The medical monitoring claim is now before the Michigan Supreme Court.

Dioxin is also a severe problem in Agent Orange hotspots including Vietnam, New Zealand and Australia, where the Dow-produced herbicide was sprayed as a lethal war defoliant and released at manufacturing facilities. Roughly 100,000 claims of Agent Orange exposure-related health problems by U.S. veterans have been filed with the government since 2000. U.S. and Vietnamese veterans and their families are suing Dow for compensation.

The unfinished legacy of the 1985 Union Carbide chemical factory explosion in Bhopal, India became Dow's problem when it acquired Carbide in 2001. One hundred and fifty thousand survivors and residents of Bhopal are still suffering from the after-effects of that explosion, which has killed 20,000 people to date. These survivors are seeking additional compensation and the environmental cleanup that was never performed.

But it's not just Dow's past that should make investors, by nature a nervous bunch, more nervous. Developing legal and public policy trends raise a big question mark as to whether Dow's reliance on organochlorine chemistry is the way to go in the 21st century. Just last month a landmark U.S. Supreme Court decision, Bates v. Dow Agrosciences, affirmed the right of citizens to sue chemical manufacturers for harm caused by their pesticides. Thousands of people harmed by pesticides will now be able to hold pesticide companies accountable in state courts for making and distributing dangerous chemicals.

In the last 15 years, Dow has already been sued in 300 lawsuits claiming damage from Dursban (the trade name for the neurotoxic pesticide chlorpyrifos), which can cause respiratory paralysis, convulsions, nausea, headaches and other symptoms with acute exposure. Last year, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) reported that 93 percent of the U.S. population had this chemical in their bodies and one market analysis indicates that Dow Chemical likely contributed at least 80 percent of public exposure to chlorpyrifos.

Just over the horizon is the European Union's REACH (Registration, Evaluation, and Authorization of Chemicals) policy, which will require chemical companies to provide data on their products including toxicity and exposure to humans and the environment. Toxic chemicals must be registered, and the worst could be restricted in favor of safer alternatives. Some industry associations suggest that up to 20 percent of chemicals on the market will be discontinued. Approximately one-third of Dow's revenues are derived from Europe. Other international documents such as the Great Lakes Water Quality Agreement and the Stockholm Persistent Organic Pollutants Treaty are paving the way for the elimination or restriction of certain chemicals that Dow produces. Dow appears to be bound for a head-on collision course with changing public policies.

Incredibly, Dow's filings with the Securities and Exchange Commission fail to mention any of these factors except the Dursban suits. The SEC requires discussion of "any known trends, demands, commitments, events or uncertainties" that are "reasonably likely" to have a material effect on the bottom line. Unfortunately, the Commission is notorious for failing to enforce these rules.

Dow is already expending hundreds of millions of dollars on environmental liabilities and the future looks like more of the same. This week, shareholders will vote on a resolution that asks the company to 1) account to investors for the impacts of changing science and new public policies that are increasingly targeting chlorpyrifos, dioxins and other persistent bio-accumulative toxics associated with Dow products; and 2) provide a plan for phase-out of products targeted by public policymakers in the U.S. and Europe.

Dow has to be thinking about these things, and it's time to disclose its plans to shareholders.

***Shelley Alpern is the director of social research & advocacy at Trillium Asset Management. The firm is the sponsor of the shareholder proposal on Dow Chemical's 2005 proxy, which will be voted upon this Thursday.
