Colon Cleansing The Natural Way

Colon cleansing involves a process called detoxification. Detoxification is geared toward clearing out toxins in the body by means of neutralizing or transforming them, as well as clearing excess mucus and congestion in the colon. Most of the toxins that are congesting the colon come from the food we eat, drugs we use, or environmental exposure both acute and chronic.

Fats (especially oxidized fats) and cholesterol, free radicals as well as other irritating molecules act as toxins. Likewise, poor digestion, colon sluggishness and dysfunction, reduced liver function and poor waste disposal by the kidneys, respiratory tract and skin all contribute to increased toxins in the colon.

Detoxification is very important for healthy living as well as enhancing the elimination of toxins in the colon and throughout the body. Minimized intake of some chemicals from food and other sources like refined sugar, caffeine, alcohol and tobacco, as well as many drugs helps to remove toxins in the body. The process of detoxification actually calls for a lifestyle change and smart selections of food.

For detoxifying or cleansing the colon, it is also important to include probiotics in your diet in order to replenish the good bacteria in the intestines. A probiotic is an organism which contributes to the health and balance of bacteria in the intestinal tract. Cancer Risks Detailed for Arthritis Drugs

CHICAGO (AP) - Rheumatoid arthritis patients taking Humira or Remicade face triple the risk of developing several kinds of cancer and double the risk of getting serious infections, a study led by the Mayo Clinic found.

The analysis builds on previous reports about the risks associated with Abbott Laboratories' (ABT) Humira and Centocor's Remicade. But the earlier research focused mostly on one kind of cancer - lymphoma - and infections such as tuberculosis and pneumonia.

The new study found an apparent link to other cancers, too, including skin, gastrointestinal, breast and lung tumors. It also quantifies the risks and says high doses appear to be the riskiest.

While the drugs' packaging information mentions some of the risks, the manufacturers said the new study does not prove that the medication is at fault, and they said the research was flawed.

Study co-author Dr. Eric Matteson, a Mayo Clinic rheumatologist, stressed the overall chances of developing cancer while using these drugs is still small. The researchers also noted that the medications' benefits include improving flexibility and range of movement, easing pain and increasing life expectancy, which arthritis can shorten.

In addition, the researchers noted that the risks for individual patients probably vary widely. Older, sicker people who have taken the drugs for several years probably face the highest risks, they said.

Still, the researchers said patients should be made aware of the dangers and told to seek medical help if they develop fevers, coughs or other symptoms of infection. They should also be sure to undergo the cancer screenings recommended for the general public, the researchers said.

Their study appears in Wednesday's Journal of the American Medical Association.

Matteson is working with Centocor in developing a new drug that works similarly, and he and co-author Dr. Tim Bongartz have been paid consultants to Abbott for unrelated work, but neither company funded the study. The Mayo Foundation sponsored the research.

Rheumatoid arthritis affects more than 2 million Americans, and involves a malfunctioning immune system that attacks joints throughout the body, causing pain, deformities and disability.

Dr. John Klippel, president of the Arthritis Foundation, said the study will probably not change doctors' minds, because scores of patients have benefited from the drugs. Remicade was approved in 1998, Humira in 2002.

More than a half-million patients have been treated with the two injectable drugs and a third similar medication, Enbrel, all of which block production of a protein linked with inflammation.

Enbrel was not included in the study because it differs at the molecular level, Matteson said. He said he is getting paid by Enbrel marketers Wyeth and Amgen to do a similar analysis on Enbrel alone.

The researchers analyzed data from nine studies comparing Humira or Remicade with placebos and pooled the results. There were 29 cancers in 3,493 patients who received at least one dose of either drug, compared with three cancers in 1,512 patients on placebos.

Serious infections occurred in 126 patients on drugs and 26 on placebos. They included pneumonia and cellulitis.

Tom Schaible, Centocor vice president of medical affairs, said most of the analyzed studies used higher-than-recommended Remicade doses. "There's clearly a favorable benefits-risks ratio" with recommended doses, Schaible said.

When there's little proof a prescription drug will work 'Off-label' medicines are becoming more popular even though they often lack scientific support, a new study shows.

Millions of Americans each year are prescribed drugs that are not approved for their specific medical condition, a practice that is legal and logical in many cases. But a new study has found that fully 20% of all prescriptions are written for such nonapproved uses and that most of these - three-quarters - are not well-supported by scientific studies.

This widespread use of medications "off-label" could threaten patients' safety while escaping the attention of federal regulators, some experts suggest.

"What surprised me about this study is that in many cases there is a paucity of scientific studies supporting the drug's use off-label," says Kenneth I. Kaitin, director of the Tufts Center for the Study of Drug Development. "It's an issue that should be discussed in the medical community." Still, Kaitin says, it's unclear whether consumers are being put at undue risk. "There has not been a significant problem with off-label prescribing that I'm aware of," he says.

The study, published last week in the Archives of Internal Medicine, polled 3,500 randomly selected doctors on all of their patient interactions over two consecutive days in 2001, including any drugs they may have prescribed. Researchers then retrieved information on the 100 most commonly prescribed drugs as well as 60 more drugs that were randomly selected.

Among other things, the scientists found that cardiac medications, anticonvulsants and asthma medications were the most likely to be prescribed off-label. Psychiatric drugs and allergy medications were the most likely types of drugs to be used off-label with little scientific support. In fact, scientific support was lacking for 96% of the psychiatric drugs prescribed off-label.

Dr. Randall S. Stafford, lead author of the study and an associate professor of medicine at the Stanford Prevention Research Center, said the findings were troubling. Even though drugs are thoroughly reviewed by the Food and Drug Administration before they're allowed to go to market, "the FDA does not vouch for the safety and efficacy of all the various ways that drugs are used," he says.

Drugs, he adds, are tested and approved at specific doses with detailed information about side effects that occurred during the trials - but those data may be irrelevant when a medication is used for a different diagnosis and in different types of patients.

Off-label use of drugs is not rare. Once a drug reaches the market, doctors can legally prescribe it for any diagnosis. This long-standing practice has been lauded for allowing doctors the freedom to treat their patients based on the latest scientific studies and clinical information.

In certain areas of medicine, such as pediatrics, off-label use of medications is almost unavoidable because, until recently, drug manufacturers were not required to conduct research on how their products affect children. And in cancer treatment, off-label use allows doctors to try different strategies for seriously ill patients who have exhausted all other options.

Off-label use also makes sense when the drug is used for a condition very similar to its approved indication. For example, Stafford says, doctors can reasonably assume that a drug used to treat asthma will be effective for other lung diseases.

"There are plenty of situations where off-label use is completely legitimate," says Stafford, "But there are other ways that drugs are used that are quite distinct from the FDA indication and where we don't have good information."

For example, he says, the Type 2 diabetes drug metformin is frequently prescribed for women with polycystic ovary syndrome. And gabapentin, a seizure drug, is widely prescribed for chronic pain. At the time the study was undertaken, in 2001, there was some preliminary evidence that those drugs had other beneficial uses, but it was not substantial.

However, safety issues are more likely to come to the attention of health regulators regarding an FDA-approved use of a drug than a nonapproved use, Stafford says.

The study did not address why doctors prescribe so many off-label medications bearing little scientific support. It is illegal for drug company sales representatives to promote off-label uses, although some experts think that practice occurs. (Pfizer, manufacturer of the gabapentin drug Neurontin, was convicted in 2004 for inappropriate marketing of off-label uses.)

Doctors often learn about novel drug uses from colleagues or from preliminary studies. The desire to offer patients the latest therapies may lead them to make a leap of faith with an off-label drug, Stafford says.

Consumers should ask if the prescription they receive is approved for their condition or has been adequately studied, he says. Doctors "need to think about the degree of evidence that supports what we do."

LENA'S COMMENT: I don't know if you've noticed it or not but it seems the medical world operates on a 20% premise. Only 20% have to be helped in drug trials for a prescription to be released to the public. Only 20% need survive Chemotherapy for it to be considered a success and now an off-label prescription can be prescribed to anyone for something other than it has been 20% effective for in the first place. Something smells here!
