Antibiotic Linked to Liver Problems

WASHINGTON (AP) - An antibiotic linked to a growing number of reports of liver failure, including four deaths, should bear stricter warnings about its effect on the liver, according to an internal Food and Drug Administration memo. The drug's manufacturer, Sanofi-Aventis, said Friday it was in talks with FDA officials about those reports.

The FDA has received reports of 12 cases of acute liver failure, including the four deaths, in patients treated with Ketek, according to a copy of the memo shown to The Associated Press. FDA safety evaluators also uncovered 23 other cases where patients suffered serious liver injuries after receiving the antibiotic, which is formally called telithromycin.

The reports, when considered in proportion to the number of prescriptions filled for Ketek, exceed what's been seen in similar antibiotics, according to the memo. The contents of the May 16 memo were first reported Friday by The Wall Street Journal.

Ronald Wassel and Dr. Allen Brinker, both of the FDA's Division of Drug Risk Evaluation, recommended in the memo that the FDA consider restricting the use of Ketek - or even withdrawing it - should the liver failure rate rise to levels seen in another antibiotic, Trovan, before its use was restricted in 1999.
 
However, the two wrote that they cannot determine whether the drug's risk is currently higher than that posed by any other of the various antibiotics associated with liver problems.

"Nonetheless, the rising trend of reporting rates associated with telithromycin is of concern," the memo reads in part. The memo was forwarded through Dr. Mark Avigan, director of the FDA's Division of Drug Risk Evaluation, to the head of the agency's Division of Anti-infective and Ophthalmologic Products, Dr. Janice Soreth.

FDA spokeswoman Susan Bro said it would be "premature" to discuss any steps the agency might take. The current FDA-approved label for Ketek warns of liver disfunction that can be severe but is "usually reversible."

Sanofi-Aventis SA (SNY) said it continues to believe Ketek is safe and effective when used as directed, adding that it continued to discuss the liver reports with the FDA.

"These complex evaluations require careful and rigorous analysis with leading experts before drawing any definitive conclusion," the company said in a statement.

In January, the Annals of Internal Medicine published a report detailing three cases of severe liver problems, including one death, in patients at a North Carolina hospital after they began taking Ketek.

That publication may have stimulated the reporting of further problems associated with Ketek, skewing perceptions of its apparent risk when compared to other drugs, according to the memo. Furthermore, reporting rates are typically higher with newer drugs. The FDA approved Ketek in April 2004.

Congress is investigating how the FDA has handled Ketek, including problems with a clinical trial that was supposed to show the drug's safety, according to The Wall Street Journal report.

Irregularities in the execution of that trial left the FDA unable to make a "meaningful assessment" of liver safety concerns associated with the drug, according to the memo.

The Romantic Fruit
 
This week my husband presented me with a bowl of these great romantic little fruits that he picked fresh from our own patch so it's only fitting that it should be the food of the week!
 
This fruit is probably the most used fruit for romantic interludes.  Some chocolate covered others simply fresh? Little do they know how healthy strawberries are... This time of year will find this romantic fruit in our home, but not for long. We have a small strawberry patch but gives us a bowl full every week or so and taste so much sweeter than the ones I buy in the store. Of course they have no fertilizers, chemicals or pesticides on them which doesn't detract from the taste or nutrients.
 
 This time of year Strawberries make their way onto many tables in the form of strawberry pie, shortcake and mixed with other fruits as smoothies or pureed and added to fruit punch. Making for a great sweets treat year round when frozen. Our grandkids love the berries frozen whole to eat like candy, which makes for a healthy body and strong teeth as well as regular bowel habits.
 
 Strawberries contain these teeny tiny seeds that make up their mystic and crunchiness. These berries carry a huge portion of antioxidants. The nutrients known to prevent and/or kill cancers of various types. Loaded with minerals and vitamins that is healthy for every body!
 
 Berries of many kinds have been used for centuries as a diarrhea and anemia treatment. Leading me to believe berries and in this instance strawberries are very important in preventing a host of problems.

This tocopherol or Vitamin E rich composition is said to be important in the prevention of degenerative disease such as diabetes. Previous testing established the presence of ellagic acid, a cancer fighting polyphenolic, found and concentrated primarily in the teeny tiny seeds of the berries. Medical research programs studying ellagic acid and demonstrated its ability to inhibit the number and size of chemically induced tumors of the esophagus of rats. (Stoner and Mukhtar, 1995).
 
 Fresh strawberries have a delicious naturally sweet taste but there's only about 50 calories in a whole cup! Strawberries are highly nutritious. Eight medium size fresh berries contains about 150% of the recommended daily intake of vitamin C and 20% of folate. They're also high in potassium and a good source of dietary fiber.
 
 Choose strawberries with a bright red color and fresh green caps. Since strawberries do not continue to ripen after they've been picked, don't buy berries that are partly white and unripe. The size of a strawberry is not a factor in determining the sweetness or taste. That's determined by the variety of strawberry, weather and growing conditions, and the degree of ripeness when picked. Fully ripe berries, large or small will be equally sweet and flavorful.
 
 Do not wash fresh strawberries or remove the caps until you're ready to eat them or use them in a recipe. Store strawberries in a covered container in the refrigerator and use them as soon as possible after you buy them. To wash strawberries, place them in a large strainer or colander and rinse with cool water. Remove their green caps with the point of a paring knife or gently twist and pull them off.
 
 Fresh Strawberry Pie
 
 1 quart strawberries - washed and hulled
 1 T. lemon juice
 1/2 cup sugar
 1 T. cornstarch
 1 baked pie shell
 whipped cream or whipped topping
 
 Preparation -
 Crush 1 cup strawberries in a food processor or blender. Pour the crushed berries in a saucepan. Add the lemon juice, sugar, & cornstarch. Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, until the mixture is thickened and clear. Remove from heat & chill. Fill pie shell with whole strawberries and when mixture has cooled pour over strawberries or you can add the strawberries to cooled mixture then pour into pre-baked pie shell. Chill for 1 to 2 hours before serving. Top individual servings with whipped cream or whipped topping. Enjoy!
