Maker to Pull Antidepressant Off Market

WASHINGTON (AP) - The maker of Serzone will pull the controversial
antidepressant off the U.S. market next month, blaming a decline in
sales rather than concern about a risk of liver failure.
The end to U.S. sales comes after Serzone was pulled off the market in
many other countries, and as maker Bristol-Myers Squibb was under
mounting pressure from lawsuits. Serzone has been linked to dozens of
cases of liver failure and injury, including at least 20 deaths.
A Bristol-Myers spokesman confirmed the decision in an interview
Wednesday, a day after the company notified wholesalers that
distribution would end June 14.
The end to sales "is long overdue," said Dr. Sidney Wolfe of the
consumer group Public Citizen. "None of the other antidepressants causes
liver damage like this."
Wolfe last spring sued the Food and Drug Administration seeking to force
a ban on Serzone. That suit will proceed in an effort to also end sales
of generic versions of Serzone, called nefazodone, Wolfe said.
An Alabama attorney said he would ask the company and the FDA to go a
step further and recall Serzone, saying that patients shouldn't continue
to buy and use the pills between now and June 14.
"I really think that's a ploy to take the heat off," said Jere Beasley,
an attorney in Montgomery, Ala., representing 30 families in Serzone
lawsuits. "It's not going to solve the problem."
Bristol-Myers spokesman Rob Hutchison said that the decision had nothing
to do with safety questions and that the company would continue to
vigorously defend the pending lawsuits.
"We still believe, and I believe the FDA does, too, as well as
physicians, that nefazodone is an important therapeutic option for
patients with depression," Hutchison said.
Instead, the company is discontinuing Serzone because of rapidly
declining sales after generic competitors hit the market last year, he
said. "Our market share is very small."
Sales of 16 other very old products also will cease, he added.
Bristol-Myers ended Serzone sales in Europe over a year ago, citing
declining sales. Canadian regulators banned the drug last fall because
of the liver risk. Sales in Australia and New Zealand are about to end,
too.
The FDA has received reports of at least 55 cases of liver failure,
including 20 deaths, and another 39 cases of less severe liver injury
since Serzone began selling in 1994. In 2002, the FDA added to Serzone's
label its strongest type of warning about the liver risk, maintaining
that liver toxicity is a rare risk adequately managed by warning
patients.
But Wolfe notes that the World Health Organization and Canadian
regulators last year compared a number of popular antidepressants and
found only Serzone was linked to an increased risk of serious liver
injury.
Canadian authorities said they banned the drug because there was no way
to predict which patients would be at risk for liver failure. Routine
liver tests haven't reduced that risk, they said.

Decline in sales came from the danger in using Serzone, so why can't
they just say that? Smart doctors refused to prescribe it... I don't

Risk Flu Or Risk Brain Damaged Child?
Lousy choice for a parent to have to make!
Yes it's early to be thinking about the flu but your doctor may be
pushing you to give your child a flu shot very soon in preparation for
returning to school in August or September...
Neither choice is good choice but less children are dying or injured
from flu each year than from the mercury in immunizations, so choose
wisely! See the following article... (My remarks below are in ( ) and
italics)
Flu Vaccines for Children Still Contain Mercury
For the past five years, the American Academy of Pediatrics and the U.S.
Public Health Service have joined forces in requesting the removal of
all mercury-containing preservative thimerosal from vaccines. However,
now for the first time, recommendations have been given to 6- to
23-month-old children to get annual flu vaccines and the recommendations
didn't include mercury-free forms of vaccines.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's (CDC) reasoning behind
this was that they felt the risk of contracting the flu and facing
health complications greatly outweighed any of the potential risks from
thimerosal in the vaccines. The CDC also stated that there hasn't been
any scientific evidence of harm from exposure to thimerosal-containing
vaccines. (That is because they CDC refuses to accept the real
figures in mercury damaged children. If they did they would lose most of
their backing from the drug companies!)
Since the 1930s, thimerosal, which is filled with 49.6 percent mercury,
has been used in vaccines to control bacteria and fungi. (That's a
lot of mercury, more than fish contain and yet they have told us not to
give fish to our children or pregnant mothers due to the risk of mercury
poisoning... How contradictory is that?)
Both parents and watchdog groups have shown increasing concern over the
risks of autism and other neurodevelopmental disorders as a result of
being exposed to mercury. Opposition from other groups against the
vaccine has motivated Congress to form a bill, which banned thimerosal
from all vaccines.
Other experts said that the cost of mercury-free vaccines was higher
than the thimerosal-containing vaccines and that a removal of
thimerosal-containing vaccines could result in wasting one-third of the
doses that have already been produced. (Who cares how much they waste
if it saves one child?)
Although a major assessment of thimerosal didn't prove or disprove any
conclusive evidence on the safety of thimerosal, experts agreed that it
should be removed from the vaccines recommended for infants, children
and pregnant women. (So if they don't believe that it harmful why
even recommend it? Sounds like forked-tongue to me!)
One pediatrician stated that he planned on giving the flu vaccine to
younger children, however would definitely choose the thimerosal-free
vaccine over the thimerosal-containing vaccine.
An expert from "PROVE" (Parents Requesting Open Vaccine Education)
claimed that from the 90 to 100 million flu vaccines that will be
produced for this fall, only 6 to 8 million would be available without
mercury.
The expert also stated that adding this vaccine to the series of
vaccines for children was just a way for the vaccine companies to cover
their backs. For example, if the vaccine injured someone, the law would
prevent people from being able to directly sue the manufacturer for
injuries. (Adding any more mercury to the already huge number of
immunizations being given to our children is asking for problems!)
The law would also require them to take part in the long and tedious
process of the Vaccine
Injury Compensation Program, which throws most cases out without any
compensation. (Maybe we could have a thimerosal party in Boston
Harbor in protest for being sold out by our politicians a couple of
years ago when this law was put into effect...)

Black Beans (Phaseolus vulgaris),
Also known as: turtle beans, black turtle beans, black Spanish beans,
Tampico beans, and Venezuelan beans.
Legumes of all kinds are great foods and should be eaten at least twice
a week for the greater health.
The darker the bean the more the antioxidant content. Out of all the
bean family black beans win in the most nutrients department.
Black beans are an amazing food! One-half cup of cooked black beans has
as many antioxidants as two glasses of red wine. Not only that but they
are packed with fiber and folate, which are touted to be great at
reducing the risk of heart disease. Black beans, as all dried beans, are
also good sources of starches, fiber, B vitamins, iron, zinc,
phosphorus, complex carbohydrates and calcium. About half of the
calcium is lost during cooking. High percentages of the other nutrients
remain however, even after cooking.
All legumes are high in protein, and black beans are no exception. Dried
beans are important sources of protein in vegetarian diets, and in areas
where animal protein is scarce or expensive. However, this protein is
incomplete (does not contain all 9 amino acids), so grains (which
provide the missing amino acids) must also be a significant part of the
strictly vegetarian diet. In the areas where common beans originated
(Central America and southern Mexico) corn supplied the missing amino
acids, and squash was an additional source of vitamins.
Before cooking, be sure to pick through them, picking out any small
pebbles, split and withered beans and any other foreign matter. (Beans
from the Rockies and Pacific coast tend to have more adobe (bits of
clay) and stones). It is also helpful to cover the beans with cold
water, let sit for 5 minutes and remove anything that floats. Repeat to
be sure all dirt and foreign matter is removed. Drain and ready to cook
Here is one great way of eating black beans. Bean, Barley & Avocado Summer Salad
This can be refrigerated and stored for several days!
1 cup carrot juice
1/2 teasp. Thyme
1/2 teasp. Sea salt
1/8 teasp. Ground Cayenne pepper
1.2 cup quick-cooking barley
3 Tablespoons Lime or Lemon Juice
1 Tablespoon Virgin Olive Oil
1 can (9 oz) black beans, rinsed and drained
1 cup diced tomatoes
1/2 cup diced avocado
Combine carrot juice, thyme, sea salt and cayenne in a saucepan. Bring
to boil over medium heat; add barley and reduce to a simmer. Cover with
lid and simmer until barley is cooked, approx. 15 minutes.
While beans are simmering whisk lime/lemon juice and oil in a large
bowl. Add barley when cooked and any liquid remaining in the barley.
Toss to coat all.
Add beans, tomatoes and avocado, toss to mix well. Serve on a lettuce
leaf.
Study Says Worms May Help Bowel Disorders

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) - Having intestinal worms actually may be a
good thing, say scientists studying treatments for irritable
bowel disorders.
University of Iowa researchers have been using pig whipworms to
treat Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis, having patients
ingest parasitic worm eggs in a glass of Gatorade.
Raymond Fiedler, 65, of Clinton, a study participant, said he
wasn't squeamish about drinking them down.
"What you don't see can't hurt you," he said.
Dr. Joel Weinstock, lead researcher, said the theory is that
the deworming of people in industrialized countries may be
responsible for the increased incidence of disorders such as
Crohn's and colitis. Both are painful, chronic inflammatory
bowel disorders that can cause diarrhea, cramping and numerous
complications.
The worms, which are thin as a hair and can grow to half an inch
long in the patient's intestine, may provide chemicals which
suppress certain immune-system responses to antigens and keep
the digestive tract healthy.
"We assume that good hygiene is great, but maybe we don't want
it," Weinstock said. "Being very, very clean ... we could be
failing to get exposed to the healthy ones in our attempts to
avoid the bad ones."
He said the incidence of Crohn's and colitis in the United
States was once 1-in-5000. Today, that ratio is about 1-250.
"It's increasing and becoming a major health problem," Weinstock
said.
The study, funded by the Crohn's and Colitis Foundation of
America and the California-based Broad Foundation, examined
about 120 people who suffer from irritable bowel disease. Some
were given a drink with 2,500 worm eggs, while others were given
a placebo.
Weinstock said it didn't take much arm-twisting to persuade
patients to ingest the worm eggs, because many were taking 25
pills or more a day for their condition. Some drugs raise their
risk of cancer, he said.
"If you came to me and I said you could take something that was
safe with no side-effects every two to three weeks, what would
you do?" Weinstock said.
"The eggs are microscopic, so you can't see them, you can't
taste them, nothing comes crawling out of you," he said. "It's
not that icky when you're ill."
Weinstock said patients in the study showed significant
improvement.
Of 54 patients with ulcerative colitis, 24 were given a placebo
and 30 drank the worm eggs.
After three months, 13 of those given the egg drink improved.
Only four of those given the placebo showed improvement.
Twenty-nine patients with Crohn's disease swallowed the eggs.
After three months, 82 percent of them were in remission. After
six months, that number had risen to 91 percent.
Fiedler, a retired middle school teacher, said he is now symptom
free.
"I feel fine - I feel great," he said.
While Fiedler wasn't officially told whether he received the
placebo or the worm drink, a videotape of a colonoscopy, done
about a year after the study began, showed the worms in his
intestine.
"From what I've seen in the videotapes and photographs, they
just attach themselves to the intestine and gobble away,"
Fiedler said.
Weinstock presented the study's finding this week at a Digestive
Disease Week conference in New Orleans. Telephone messages left
Thursday for other experts in gastroenterology were not
immediately returned.
Weinstock said the pig whipworms were used because they're safe
and live only a short time in humans, and cannot be transmitted
to another person.
By comparison, human whipworms can live in a person for up to
two years, he said.
Weinstock said no one before has studied the positive aspects of
worms, which have always been considered to be negative.
"I suspect, and this is total speculation, that it could be we
want people to have worms - that the positive effects of worms
would be good," Weinstock said.
The research could lead to the development of drugs from
chemicals produced by the worms, he said, adding that such drugs
- and maybe even the worms themselves - "may be important not
only for treating diseases but for prevention as well."
Meanwhile, Fiedler continues to drink the worm egg concoction.
"They're training me now to mix them myself, so I can keep them
in my refrigerator here, so I don't have to travel to Iowa City
as often," he said.

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. (AP) - Most of a startling number of sea otters
found sick or dead on the Central California coast last month were
infected with a deadly brain parasite, state scientists said Thursday.
In April, 62 southern sea otters were found stranded alive or dead near
Morro Bay and Pismo Beach. That's about three times the 10-year average
and more than the previous record of 48 stranded or dead otters reported
a year earlier.
After examining the animals, researchers determined most were infected
with a parasite called Sarcocystis neurona and suffered brain
inflammation, according to the state Department of Fish and Game.
The parasite originates in the feces of opossum - a small marsupial
mammal not native to California - and is known to cause brain damage.
Researchers are unclear how the otters came into contact with the feces.
Sea otter deaths attributed to Sarcocystis neurona have been reported
before, but not in a localized cluster, researchers said.
Researchers previously suspected that a naturally occurring toxin found
in algae, were behind last month's otter deaths. They now believe only a
few of the otters were killed or sickened by the toxin.
The southern sea otter is listed as a threatened species by the federal
government. A 2003 count estimated the population at 2,505, and their
numbers appear to be holding steady.
