Tobacco is a mood-altering, addictive drug
that kills 500,000 Americans a year (200 million worldwide)
Costs $400 billion each year, according to "Smoking and Health
Review," (1992).
The American Lung Association says tobacco contains more than 4,000
chemicals, 60 of which causes cancer.
Some of the 'killers' are radioactivity, arsenic, ammonia, lead,
formaldehyde, nitrogen dioxide, cadmium, phenol, benzene and hydrogen
cyanide (the 'gas chamber' gas that poisons the respiratory enzymes)

Greetings and welcome new subscribers. You are very appreciated and my goal is to help you improve
both your health and your business!
My dh and I set down to place a special order for a shower enclosure and
the sales person took this stuffed wallet out of his back pocket so he
could give us his card. I made the remark, "Bet you have some huge back
problems!" He looked quite surprised and asked why I made that
statement. I proceeded to inform him that, "A huge majority of men with
back problems and/or severe headaches sit on wallets and send their
backs into misalignment and end up wondering why they have back problems
or those headaches." He then stated, "I've just returned to work as I
have been off work for the last few weeks with my back and have suffered
with back problems for years, but it just wasn't getting any better with
the rest and pills the doctor gave him so I'm back to work, pain and
all." DUH! His orthopedist had never recommended he remove that huge
wallet from his back pocket! I recommended he see a Chiropractor and get
the wallet out of the pocket. Didn't cost him anything for that
advise... I also told him that I have a couple of herbal formulas that
will help strengthen and rebuild the damage from his habit... No I'm not
a doctor but I've seen this same scenario for more than twenty years and
men coming into the office with one or both complaints and a wallet in
their back pocket... Did I ever hear a doctor tell them to remove it?
Only once, and that doc is an Osteopath... So how is your doctor faring
in knowing the real scoop on successful medical treatments?

Ingredient In Shampoo May Affect Memory
Animal Research Shows DEA Slows Memory Cell Development
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- Washing your hair might make you lose your mind. It
sounds like a line from the cover of a tabloid magazine, but it's the
focus of government research.
Shampooing May Affect Memory
Researchers at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill have
uncovered evidence that suggests an ingredient found in some soaps and
shampoos might affect memory.
The research in animals centers around diethanolamine (DEA), a chemical
used in shampoos, lotions, creams and other cosmetics. DEA is used
widely because it provides a rich lather in shampoos and keeps a
favorable consistency in lotions and creams, but there's also some
research that shows it may rob the brain of its ability to make memory
cells.

BACK PAIN BOTHERING YOU?
If you are a guy make sure you have no stuffed wallet in your back
pocket and sit on it daily! #1 cause of back pain in men!
Other causes of back pains are usually muscular stiffness and weakness,
obesity, trigger points, muscle spasm and lack of exercise. If the
problem is weakness or stiffness then you need exercise -- not surgery,
but doctors don't learn this in medical school so they are going to tell
you to have back surgery.

How to Stop Depression Medications: Very Slowly
By MARY DUENWALD
Now that the Food and Drug Administration has warned Americans taking
antidepressants to be on the lookout for potentially harmful side
effects, including severe restlessness and suicidal thinking, some
people may end up stopping the drugs. But going off antidepressants can
bring its own problems.
Stopping cold turkey can cause an array of troublesome symptoms, the
most common being dizziness, which can last for days on end. Flu-like
feelings, including nausea, headache and fatigue, are also common, as
are intense feelings of anxiety, irritability or sadness. Some patients
experience alarming sensations of tingling or burning in various parts
of the body; ringing in the ears; blurred vision; or flashing lights
before the eyes. Some people even describe a feeling of shock waves
pulsing through their arms and legs, as if they had been zapped with a
jolt of electricity, a condition sometimes called lightning-bolt
syndrome.
"The feeling can be really abrupt, like a quick jerk of the muscle,"
said Dr. Richard C. Shelton, a professor of psychiatry at Vanderbilt
University. "It's not painful, but it can be very frightening to
people."
Internet bulletin boards and Web sites devoted to antidepressant
withdrawal chronicle the crying spells, vertigo and nightmares that
people sometimes experience.
"I feel like my brain is floating in Jell-O, slamming into the sides of
my skull every time I move my head or my eyes," one person wrote.
Another described palpitations, night sweats and "bloody hideous
nightmares."
To avoid such symptoms, or at least hold them to a minimum, the drugs
need to be tapered gradually in most cases, and that means quitting
under a doctor's supervision. Psychiatrists say it is unwise for people
who are taking antidepressants simply to quit on their own.
In its warning, issued in March, the F.D.A. urged doctors to closely
monitor patients taking antidepressants, especially during the first
weeks of therapy or when changing dosage. Signs of trouble, the agency
said, could include suicidal thoughts, severe restlessness, anxiety,
hostility or insomnia. Though an association between antidepressants and
suicidal thinking or behavior has not been proved, unpublished studies
suggesting the possibility of such a link in children and adolescents
have caused concern. The F.D.A. is still investigating the issue.
The drugs most likely to produce withdrawal symptoms act on the brain
chemical serotonin. These drugs work by blocking the action of a protein
in the brain that normally transports serotonin out of the synapses, the
spaces between brain cells. With the transporter protein blocked,
serotonin lingers in the synapses, and that can have a positive effect
on mood.
When the drug is taken away, there is suddenly less serotonin in the
synapses. Serotonin receptors in the brain, accustomed to a larger
supply of the neurotransmitter, may take days or weeks to adjust, said
Dr. Ephrain C. Azmitia, a psychopharmacologist at New York University.
"You get a precipitous drop in all the things that serotonin does in the
brain, including its effects on appetite, sleep, sensory perception and
emotions," Dr. Shelton said.
Not everyone experiences withdrawal symptoms. Studies suggest that only
10 to 20 percent of patients have significant problems, said Dr. Jerrold
F. Rosenbaum, chief of psychiatry at Massachusetts General Hospital in
Boston. And some patients find the effects less intense or bothersome
than others.
Doctors say people who have been taking especially large doses of a drug
for many years may be somewhat more vulnerable. Which drug a patient is
taking also makes a difference. Some are stronger than others, and some
are metabolized by the body more quickly.
The longer a drug's half-life - the time it takes for half the amount of
drug in the body to be eliminated - the less likely it is to cause
withdrawal problems. Eli Lilly's Prozac, for example, has a long
half-life, remaining in the body for days or even weeks after someone
stops taking it. As a result, people who take it are less likely to
experience withdrawal effects.
"With Prozac, it can take six weeks for any symptoms to occur," Dr.
Rosenbaum said, and even then the effects are mild, with about 5 to 6
percent of people experiencing mild dizziness.
GlaxoSmithKline's Paxil, on the other hand, generally leaves the body in
a day or two. Effexor, made by Wyeth, disappears faster still.

FOOD OF THE
WEEK
~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~
Black Beans (Phaseolus vulgaris),
Also known as: turtle beans, black turtle beans, black Spanish beans,
Tampico beans, and Venezuelan beans.
Legumes of all kinds are great foods and should be eaten at least twice
a week for the greater health.
The darker the bean the more the antioxidant content. Out of all the
bean family black beans win in the most nutrients department.
Black beans are an amazing food! One-half cup of cooked black beans has
as many antioxidants as two glasses of red wine. Not only that but they
are packed with fiber and folate, which are touted to be great at
reducing the risk of heart disease. Black beans, as all dried beans, are
also good sources of starches, fiber, B vitamins, iron, zinc,
phosphorus, complex carbohydrates and calcium. About half of the
calcium is lost during cooking. High percentages of the other nutrients
remain however, even after cooking.
All legumes are high in protein, and black beans are no exception. Dried
beans are important sources of protein in vegetarian diets, and in areas
where animal protein is scarce or expensive. However, this protein is
incomplete (does not contain all 9 amino acids), so grains (which
provide the missing amino acids) must also be a significant part of the
strictly vegetarian diet. In the areas where common beans originated
(Central America and southern Mexico) corn supplied the missing amino
acids, and squash was an additional source of vitamins.
Before cooking, be sure to pick through them, picking out any small
pebbles, split and withered beans and any other foreign matter. (Beans
from the Rockies and Pacific coast tend to have more adobe (bits of
clay) and stones). It is also helpful to cover the beans with cold
water, let sit for 5 minutes and remove anything that floats. Repeat to
be sure all dirt and foreign matter is removed. Drain and ready to cook
Here is one great way of eating black beans. Bean, Barley & Avocado Summer Salad

While beans are simmering whisk lime/lemon juice and oil in a large
bowl. Add barley when cooked and any liquid remaining in the barley.
Toss to coat all.
Add beans, tomatoes and avocado, toss to mix well. Serve on a lettuce
leaf.

All Dressed Up, Carrying Germs
By JOHN O'NEIL
Published: May 25, 2004
It's not news that hospitals are full of sources of infection.
But a study released yesterday found a new one: Almost half the
ties worn by doctors in a Queens hospital proved to be carrying
pathogens.
By contrast, only 1 of 10 ties belonging to security guards, who
have far less close contact with patients, were germ infested.
The study was conducted at New York Hospital Medical Center of
Queens and was presented yesterday at a conference of the
American Society for Microbiology in New Orleans by one of its
authors, Steve Nurkin, a medical student.
Mr. Nurkin said he proposed the study when, during a rotation on
the hospital's surgery ward, he noticed that the ties invariably
worn by male doctors often swung close to or touched patients
when the doctors leaned over hospital beds.
Other research has found that doctors' pens, cellphones and
pagers can harbor potentially harmful micro-organisms.
The microbes found on 20 of 42 ties included strains that
commonly cause in-hospital infections, although none were of the
drug-resistant kind that cause the most concern.
Mr. Nurkin acknowledged that the study showed only that ties can
harbor diseases, not that they transmit them. But he noted that
it might not occur to doctors to wash their hands after handling
their ties. And unlike white coats, ties are often worn many
times between cleanings.
Mr. Nurkin, who is now attending medical school in Haifa,
Israel, said his findings had elicited many suggestions, among
them making bow ties a medical fashion and bringing back tie
pins to keep ties from swinging down.
Or, he said, American doctors could imitate those he sees in
Israel, who never wear ties.
Drivers Eye Vegetable Oil As Cheap Fuel
By LAURA WALSH
WESTON, Conn. (AP) - As the nation grapples with pumped-up gas prices,
car owners are turning to their favorite restaurants for a solution:
recycled vegetable oil.
Environmentalists have been using the fuel alternative for years as a
way to cut back on sooty emissions, but as gas prices soar above $2 a
gallon, they say their "veggie cars" are also a great way to save some
cash.
Every two weeks, Etta Kantor drives to a local Chinese restaurant to
fuel her blue Volkswagen Jetta. She calls ahead and the owner knows to
put aside a few buckets of used oil just for her. At home, Kantor uses a
colander and a bag filter to remove water and any food particles.
The vegetable oil is then poured into a 15-gallon tank that sits in the
back of her Jetta, where a spare tire would usually be kept. With a
touch of a button, located above the radio, Kantor can switch from
diesel fuel to vegetable oil in seconds.
"Oh, I zip around town, go fast on highways. It's not any different,"
said Kantor, 58, of Weston.
Restaurants have to pay to get rid of their old vegetable oil and are
happy to give it away for free.
"It saves us a couple of dollars and it helps to save the environment a
bit so I thought, 'Why not?'" said Shawn Reilly, a co-owner of Eli's On
Whitney, a restaurant in Hamden.
Reilly estimates that it costs between $40 and $60 a month to have the
oil removed otherwise.
The restaurant's only oil collector, Bridgeport resident Aaron
Schlechter, says he picks up about 30 or 40 gallons twice a month from
Eli's. He uses it to fuel his car for his 170-mile commute every day to
his job as an environmental consultant in Staten Island, N.Y.
"The only way that I can assuage my guilt by driving this awful distance
is by driving something that isn't consuming fossil fuels and has much
more environmentally friendly emissions," Schlechter, 29, said.
Vegetable oil is becoming such a rage that a Massachusetts company
called Greasecar, is buying it in bulk from a distributor and selling it
to local customers. It sells for 90 cents a gallon, said company founder
Justin Carven.
Since 2001, Greasecar has also been selling conversion kits, like the
one in Kantor's car, that allow diesel cars to run on the recycled oil.
The kits only work on diesel engines. About 200 kits were sold in the
past year, Carven said.
A standard conversion kit sells for $800 at Greasecar.
"Once you install it, though, you are saving hundreds and hundreds of
dollars," he said. "The product usually pays for itself within the first
year."
Using the conversion kit, the car must be started and stopped on diesel
fuel. A separate fuel tank is installed to hold the vegetable oil. Once
the car is running and the vegetable oil has heated up, it can be
switched over to run on just the vegetable oil.
The oil must be heated because it is thicker and tends to congeal in the
cold weather, Carven said.
Similarly, Liquid Solar in Ithaca, N.Y., has contracts with a few local
restaurants to collect their used vegetable oil. And in Santa Rosa,
Calif., a group of 50 people have formed a co-op to buy the oil in bulk
from a local manufacturer and then filter it for their own use.
Although the Environmental Protection Agency has given a stamp of
approval for vegetable-based biodiesel, it hasn't approved any recycled
oil for sale, said Christine Sansevero, an environmental engineer for
EPA.
"You just don't know what's in that oil," she said. "There could be
metals, other chemicals that, when burned, could create something you
didn't intend to burn. It could also be fine, but it's an unknown."
Biodiesel is a fuel derived from plant oil or animal fat, Sansevero
said. It can be used in pure form but it is often blended with regular
diesel. The most common form is B20 - a blend of 20 percent biodiesel
and 80 percent petroleum diesel.
Veggie car owners agree that biodiesel is another renewable fuel source,
but say it isn't as cost effective or eco-friendly. Pure biodiesel costs
about $1 more per gallon than diesel, Sansevero said. B20 costs about 20
cents more per gallon than diesel, she said.
The trend is catching on, especially for those who have a distance to
drive.
The Healing Waters Band had a Greasecar conversion kit installed in its
bus for a recent seven-week tour across the country. The band used a
blended biodiesel mix to start and stop the engine, and vegetable oil
for the rest.
The band left its hometown of San Diego on a full tank of vegetable oil
and then filled up again at a Chinese restaurant in Missouri before
buying 500 gallons during a stop at Greasecar in Massachusetts.
"We only spent $200 that would have normally cost us about $1,200, and
we probably could have done it all for free if we kept stopping (at
restaurants)," said Tony Thorpe, 34, a bassist and vocalist for the
band.
In Connecticut, Kantor is hoping to start her own small distribution
center so she and others won't have to rely so heavily on restaurants
for fuel.
"You know that expression, 'If you build it, they will come.' Well, if
we make it accessible, people will use it," Kantor said.
