"Senior moments" are not
usually signs of Alzheimer's disease, you'll be glad to hear.
Experts in aging say those
kinds of memory lapses --the where-did-I-put-my-car-keys moments-- are
universal by late middle age. And they arise from a different part of
the brain than the region involved in the forgetfulness that is
symptomatic of Alzheimer's, according to a Boston Globe article.
People with Alzheimer's usually cannot recall ordinary nouns , -- like a
fork or radio -- and they're less aware of their forgetfulness, say the
experts.
And the one test of what type of forgetfulness you experience involves
your reaction when you finally remember where you put the keys.
If you have a sense of recollection -- "Oh, yes, the phone rang and I
put them on the table" -- chances are about 95 percent that you're
normal.
On the other hand, says Marilyn Albert, director of gerontology research
at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, "People in the early stages
of Alzheimer's tend not to have that sense of recollection, even when
they're reminded."

When your baby has a fever, there are two traditional ways to bring
down his or her temperature: with a tepid sponge bath or with medicine.
Researchers at the University of Arizona studied which way worked best.
As reported in the American Journal of Emergency Medicine, they treated
20 infants who had fevers. All the infants got a dose of acetaminophen,
but half also were given a sponge bath. The babies were monitored, both
to see how feverish they were, and if they showed signs of discomfort --
crying, shivering or goose bumps. In favor of sponge baths: the fever
went down faster in the first hour. Against sponge baths: the babies
showed more signs of discomfort during bath.

I dread flying because I suffer so much ear pain when the plane
starts descending for a landing. I had been using an oral
decongestant to keep my ears open, but it has not been working as

Will That Drug build Or Destroy Your Bone & Joint Problem?

Probably not!!!
What prescription did your doctor give you to alleviate and
prevent the joint pain? Did that prescription correct the
problem? Chances are it didn't and isn't made to!
Bone and joint problems is at the top of the list of causes of
disability in the U.S.. Sadly our chemical laden medical world
treats symptoms not problems therefore are not helping the
problem.
According to medical experts one in seven people are
experiencing joint problems. For those over 65 years of age it
soars to 80% of people plagued with joint problems. There are
several reasons for these problems. Those are traumatic overuse
or underuse of the joints as well as poor diet, bacterial
infection or virus, immune deficiency factors and heredity all
playing a role.
Post World War II the pharmaceutical industry began to
adulterate and try to reproduce chemical drugs with the
properties that had in the past, in their natural state, rebuilt
the bones and joints thereby alleviating the problem. But their
attempt has been a dismal failure and creates more problems than
they solve. Of course that industry has tried to please the
Fast Food mentality that now exists, by giving fast pain relief
without curtailing the problem causing the pain!
The last few years has seen all Vioxx and the likes of it come
on the market with devastating results and creating more
problems than they help? Yet the pharmaceutical world continues
with the propaganda that they are helping joints, bones and
tendons, when they are really destroying them along with other
parts of the body!
Basic science tells us that our body regenerates itself when
given the proper tools to do so, but that has long been
forgotten and is rarely to never taught in our medical schools.
History also teaches that the proper nutrition can repair our
bodies as well. That too is being ignored by the bulk of
physicians and scientists. If regeneration was truly taught by
our medical schools the pharmaceutical companies could not sell
so many chemical laden body-destroying drugs, which line their
pockets with wealth. So it's no mystery to me why they would
not make something that works, it would drain their coffers?
Whether anyone wants to believe it or not medicine is a business
to those training our doctors!
Those who take their drugs must also bear some of the blame for
their bone and joint pains! A sedentary lifestyles contributes
to pain of joints and bones sufferers. The stiffness and
soreness, due to inactivity, frequently start as minor symptoms,
often initiated by bad weather. Before too long, if not
exercised the stiffness leads to agonizing symptoms, which stop
any kinds of movements and propels you to the doctor's office.
Where the rule to regeneration is broken by the medical
treatments offered. Exercise has proven to regenerate the bones
and joints but our society has been brain washed to think that
pain should stop you from moving! So the get up and move, when
joint pain hits in order to rebuild them, no longer exists as in
past generations!
Diet is another factor, especially as we age, more commonly poor
eating habits are found among people with joint and bone
problems. A diet lacking in fruits, vegetables and omega-3 and
omega-6 fats can lead to the production of sticky, watery joint
fluid that is unable to properly nourish cartilage and other
joint structures or flush out the toxins that build up. It is
important for people with joint and bone problems to eat whole
foods, including fruits, vegetables, grains and nuts and drink
plenty of clean, clear chemical-free water. Take daily food
supplements, especially minerals, vitamins and Omega 3 laden
fish or flax-seed oil, which will help rebuild the immune system
and help to absorb the nutrients your body does consume in your
diet!
A real and dangerous thing is happening in our medical world!
Have you ever known a person taking medications such as the
common NSAIDs (ibuprofen, aspirin, Motrin, etc.) to regenerate
their bones and completely cure the problem? NOT! it does not
happen!
In the twenty years I worked in medical offices I only saw a
downhill spiraling of health problems that can only be

other hand I have seen people go off all NSAIDs and
corticosteroids and regain total regeneration of their joints
and bones, without a prescription! Myself, my best friend and my
husband can included in that group.
Unfortunately traditional drugs play a major role in the
continuing decline of the joints and muscles. Once requiring a
prescription but can now be purchased over the counter to the
tune of millions of dollars lining the drug companies
pockets. If you are taking one of these: Aspirin - Orudis -
Ibuprofen - Tandearil - Aleve - Rufen - Bufferin - Datril -
Indocin - Nuprin - Asolid - Liquipen - Nafon - Butazolidin -
Tylenol - Oxalid - Advil - Tolectin - Excedrin - IB - Clinoril -
Midol 2000. You are unknowingly headed into a downhill decline.
Warning: None of the above should be taken in conjunction with

Although you may initially relieve the pain and cover the
symptoms with prescription or over-the-counter meds you are
accelerating cartilage damage and worsening your condition. You
may also begin experiencing any or several of the following.
Headaches, Diarrhea, Constipation, Drowsiness, Sore throat,
Sensitivity to sunlight, Dizziness, Ulcers, Ringing in the ears,
Nervousness, Kidney/urinary problems, Swelling of hands/feet,

order for the body to repair itself it must be fed the building
blocks that can restore it to the natural state. Along with
proper diet and exercise there are much-needed nutrients and

As my husband laid some
delectable fruit into my hands, picked from our own tree, I
decided then and there what would be the fruit for the week!
In a few weeks the season will be upon us in parts of the United
States:
So it's time to get those taste buds working overtime
anticipating the sweet and tart taste… Cherry Picking Time!
Cherries are a small, round, red stone fruit. They grow on trees
in small clusters. There are both sweet cherries and sour
cherries. Sweet cherries are round or slightly heart-shaped.
Cherries are eaten fresh, made into pie filling, flavored
yogurt, jellies, jams, sauces, stewed fruit, fruit drinks, ice
cream and candies. Cherries are a good source of vitamin C, the
B vitamins, potassium and many micronutrients. Most sweet
cherries are eaten fresh. Almost all sour cherries are processed
for canning.
Compact, juicy, and colorful, cherries are nicely supplied with
nutrients, notably pectin (a soluble fiber that helps control
blood cholesterol levels), vitamin C, and beta-carotene, with
some potassium. (Sour cherries, which are sometimes called "pie
cherries," have considerably more vitamin C than sweet cherries
do, though much of it is lost when the cherries are cooked.)
Cherries are also high in a number of phytochemicals, including:
anthocyanins (pigments responsible for the red and blue colors
of fruits and vegetables), which are touted to have anticancer
properties based on their antioxidant activities that defend
cells against harmful carcinogens); and quercetin, a flavonoid,
which is an antioxidant and with anticancer properties as well
as anti-inflammatory and antihistaminic properties. It is this
anti-inflammatory activity that has made cherries (specifically
cherry juice) of interest to people who suffer from gout.
Both sweet and sour cherries besides being rich in fiber also
contain several vitamins, such as Vitamin A, Thiamin- B1,
Riboflavin- B2 and Vitamin C. Also mixed in are the minerals
such as Calcium, Phosphorus, Iron, Sodium, Niacin and Potassium.
There's even a possible dental health bonus in that studies have
shown that a substance (not yet identified) in cherry juice may
help prevent tooth decay.
Although some people find the cherry pit an annoying feature,
the cherry's only other shortcoming is their brief season, which
lasts less than 3 months.
The two basic categories of cherry: sweet and sour.

Sweet Cherries;
Bing: There are many commercial varieties of sweet
cherries, but the leader is the Bing, a large, round,
extra-sweet cherry with purple-red flesh and a deep red skin
that verges on black when fully ripe and great fresh.
Lambert: The second most popular variety is the Lambert,
a smaller, heart-shaped red cherry similar in taste and texture
to the Bing.
Rainier: The Rainier, a sweet cherry with yellow or
pinkish skin, is grown in limited quantities and is milder and
sweeter than the Bing.
Royal Ann: Another light-skinned variety, the Royal Ann,
is often canned or made into maraschino cherries.
Sour cherries:

Most commercially grown sour varieties--such as Montmorency,
which is the best known--are canned or frozen for use as pie
fillings or sauces, although you can occasionally find fresh
sour cherries during the summer months at farmers' markets and
roadside stands. Sour cherries are smaller than sweet cherries
and are a bright scarlet.
Both sweet and sour cherries have extremely short shelf lives,
and must be handled gently to reduce bruising and oxidation.
Sour cherries for processing are dumped into cold water
immediately following harvest. They are then transported to
processing plants, where they are washed, de-stemmed, pitted,
and packed for freezing, all within hours from harvest.
Sweet cherries are hydrocooled or dumped into cold water by
pickers, and packed in shallow flats after being sorted based on
color and size, usually the largest being 15/16 inch or higher.
Sweet cherries are usually shipped immediately, since shelf life
is 2 weeks. They are subject to the same post-harvest diseases
(brown rot, grey mold, blue mold, Rhizopus, Alternaria, etc..)
as other stone fruits.
A nutrient rich food!
Maraschino cherries are made mostly from sweet cherries, but a
small proportion of sour cherries are brined for this purpose.
Brined cherries are de-colorized with SO2, then steeped in
Marasca, a liqueur distilled from the fermented juice of wild
cherries.
Our favorite way of eating cherries are fresh and ready for
popping into the mouth. Nothing quite so great as picking and
eating when they are in season. Second choice are cobblers and
pies...
Here are two versions of Cherry Cobblers for in season or off!
Fresh Cherry Cobbler
1 1/4 cups sugar
3 tablespoons cornstarch
4 cups pitted fresh tart cherries
1/4 teaspoon almond extract
1 cup flour
1 tablespoon sugar
1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
3 tablespoons shortening
1/2 cup milk
Preheat oven to 400°. Blend 1 1/4 cups sugar, cornstarch,
cherries, and almond extract in a medium saucepan. Cook over
medium heat, stirring constantly, until mixture thickens and
boils. Continue to boil and stir for 1 minute. Pour fruit
mixture into an ungreased 2-quart casserole.
Place in oven while preparing dough.
Measure flour, 1 tablespoon sugar, baking powder, and salt into
a mixing bowl. Add shortening and milk. Cut shortening in
several times then stir until dough forms a ball. Drop dough in
about 6 spoonfuls onto hot fruit. Bake 25 to 30 minutes, or
until topping is golden brown. Serve warm with cream, if
desired, or cool slightly and serve with vanilla ice cream
Cherry Cobbler with Biscuit Mix
2 tablespoons quick cooking tapioca
2/3 cup sugar
1/8 teaspoon salt
1 can (20 ounces) drained canned tart cherries, reserve juice
1 cup cherry juice (add water to make 1 cup if necessary)
2 teaspoons butter
1 cup biscuit mix
2 tablespoons sugar
1/3 cup evaporated milk
Preheat oven to 425º. In a bowl, combine tapioca, 2/3 cup sugar,
1/8 teaspoon salt, cherries and the 1 cup cherry juice (if there
isn't enough cherry juice to make 1 cup, add a little water).
Mix and put into a lightly buttered 1 1/2-quart baking dish. Dot
top of cherry mixture with 2 teaspoons butter, cut in small
pieces.
Bake at 425° for 12 minutes.
In a mixing bowl, combine biscuit mix, 2 tablespoons sugar, and
evaporated milk. Remove cherry mixture from the oven and drop
dough by tablespoonfuls on top to make 4 dumplings.
Bake for about 12 minutes longer, or until dumplings are lightly
browned.
Cherry Cobbler serves 4. Serve warm with vanilla ice cream of a
dollop of whipped topping.

Report Says School Bus
Exhaust Harms Kids

WASHINGTON (AP) - Most states aren't doing enough to protect children
from the diesel exhaust many of them inhale while riding or waiting for
school buses, an environmental advocacy group said in a report
Wednesday.
No state received an A grade in the Union of Concerned Scientists'
National School Bus Report Card, although it noted that many are working
to cut school bus emissions, which can contribute to asthma and other
respiratory ailments.
"School buses can be a major source of pollution exposure for children,"
said Patricia Monahan, an analyst for the group.
The Washington, D.C.-based organization advocates accurate scientific
information in policymaking and sometimes takes liberal stances on
issues.
After examining data supplied by all 50 states and the District of
Columbia, the organization found that the district and Delaware, which
received B grades, had the lowest rates of soot pollution: just over 9
pounds of pollution per bus last year. Fourteen other states also
received Bs.
The worst polluter was South Carolina, closely followed by South Dakota.
Both earned D grades, as did 11 other states.
Ninety-five percent of the nation's school buses are diesel-powered, and
the group is recommending that they be refitted with fuel oxygenators or
other anti-pollution equipment. The group also wants buses over 12 years
old to be replaced by newer low-emission models.
"The oldest buses seem to pump out soot every time they climb a hill or
accelerate," said Dennis J. McLerran, executive director of the Puget
Sound Clean Air Agency in Seattle. Those buses produce as much as 20
times the pollution of newer models, McLerran said.
Several states are using alternative-fuel buses, replacing older buses
with cleaner-burning models or retrofitting buses with devices that trap
emissions. A considerably more low-tech method also can reduce
children's exposure to bus pollution, especially as they wait in the
parking lot for a ride home.
"We're recommending you just turn the engines off whenever you can,"
said Dwight Sinila, transportation director of Michigan's education
department.
