Mid week finds us still under a
bit of smoky skies from the weekend forest fire, South of us, but
contained at this point. The fire occurred all because someone didn't
follow the rules and think they are above them. One of my pet peeves!!!
We must all take care and follow the rules that will make everyone's
life better and building fires when it's forbidden is rather basic, just
goes to show some people are really selfish! Our forests and valleys are
so dry that any small ember can be a disaster to us and our animal
friends who depend on us to keep them safe!

Skin cancer is said to be
caused by too many hours in the sun! Supposedly more prevalent in those
who work outside day in and day out!
Folic acid deficiency is a major contributor to skin cancer risk. Folic
acid (along with vitamin B12 and zinc) is absolutely key to DNA
reproduction and repair.
I recommend supplementing with 1,000 mcg of folic acid daily. Those who
spend a good amount of time in the sun or have a family history of skin
cancer should use even more. It's also good to add sources of folic acid
to the diet, such as spinach and other dark green vegetables, brewers

Researchers from Canada's University of Calgary say your ability to read
blurry road signs improves as you get older. According to the journal
Human Factors, the researchers first tested the ability of younger and
older drivers to read familiar road signs under bad lighting conditions.
The older drivers did better. Thinking the older drivers were so used to
seeing STOP signs that they didn't have to read the words anymore, the
researchers created some brand new signs and repeated the test. The
older drivers still came out ahead.

A study done in Sweden
found that drinking black or green tea each day significantly
reduced women's epithelial ovarian cancer risk.
Researchers looked at
information from more than 61,000 women who participated in the
Swedish Mammography Cohort study. The women were between the ages of
40 and 76 when they enrolled in the study and were followed until
2004.
When compared to women who rarely drank tea, higher tea consumption
appeared to reduce ovarian cancer risk. The more a person drank, the
lower the risk became. Women who drank one cup a day lowered their
risk by 24 percent. Those drinking two or more cups a day cut their
risk in half. And the researchers said that each additional cup of
tea per day was associated with an 18 percent lower risk of
developing epithelial ovarian cancer.

State Ready to Phase Out
Dry-Clean Solvent The air regulators' vote to develop a plan for
a gradual ban goes against staff recommendation.

California is poised to become the first state to phase out the
main chemical used by dry cleaners, following a unanimous vote
by the state's Air Resources Board on Thursday to develop a plan
to eliminate perchloroethylene ? or "perc."
Citing health risks to workers, nearby residents and businesses,
the board took the action despite industry protests and a
contrary recommendation by its own staff.
The South Coast Air Quality Management District enacted the
first ban anywhere in the U.S. on perc in 2002, giving nearly
2,100 cleaners in Los Angeles, Riverside, San Bernardino and
Orange counties until 2020 to phase out the chemical. That
policy could well serve as a model for the rest of the state, a
board spokesman said.
The state board sought to cushion the blow to the estimated
2,500 small, independent dry cleaners that will be affected by
directing its staff to study the economic effects and possibly
come up with a tax credit and financial incentives for replacing
the costly equipment that makes use of the banned chemical
during the next six to eight months.
"They made it very clear they don't want this to happen
overnight ? but they want to send a strong signal to dry
cleaners that they should not be buying any expensive new perc
equipment in the next year or two," said board spokesman Jerry
Martin.
New cleaning machinery can cost between $40,000 and $140,000
depending on the type of technology used.
California regulators previously declared perc a known toxic air
and water contaminant that can cause cancer and other health
problems. The air board staff concluded that exposure to perc
emissions at close range increases the risk of cancer in an
additional 50 to 100 people per million.
"The board recognized this is the right thing to do when you
have a highly toxic chemical, and you have alternatives already
available in the marketplace," said Tim Carmichael, president of
the Coalition for Clean Air, one of more than a dozen
environmental groups that lobbied the board to ban the solvent.
But industry representatives disputed the risk assessments and
said dry cleaners across the country had already reduced perc
emissions between 70% and 80%.
Sandra Giarde of the California Cleaners Assn. said a 20-year
study of thousands of dry cleaning employees in four Nordic
countries showed "no increased risk". California and the numbers
they choose to use have regulators in the rest of the nation
shaking their heads."
Peter Sinsheimer, director of the Pollution Prevention Center at
Occidental College, who is overseeing a state-funded pilot
program to install "wet-cleaning" machines, said that process,
which combines water and detergent with sophisticated reshaping
and finishing equipment, was by far the safest alternative. He
said many dry cleaners were already switching to it.
But Giarde and others said wet cleaning was far more expensive
than using perc because it required several pieces of equipment
and extensive worker retraining.
The air board staff had spent three years crafting proposals for
tougher regulation of perc that would allow its continued use.
Board members rejected that approach.
"Of course I'm disappointed," Giarde said.
"The staff approach was an actual balanced approach. But nothing
air boards do surprises me anymore."

Almost All Tropical Forests
Unprotected

MEXICO CITY (AP) - Almost all the world's tropical forests remain
effectively unprotected even though two-thirds have been designated for
some sort of preservation over the past two decades, according to a
report released Thursday.
The study of tropical forest management by the International Tropical
Timber Organization surveyed 2 billion acres - two-thirds of the world's
tropical forests - in 33 countries.
All of those forests were designated by the governments and landowners
overseeing them as being under "sustainable management," meaning they
were completely protected as conservation areas, or designated as sites
where economic activities such as logging were only allowed if they
didn't destroy the forest.
However, the group said that what it called "the most extensive survey
ever" found that less than 5 percent of these forests were managed in a
sustainable way last year.
Scientists say tropical forests serve important environmental functions
by providing habitat to countless species of plant and animal life,
increasing rainfall and humidity, and helping to fight global warming by
reducing carbon dioxide levels in the atmosphere.
In Latin America and the Caribbean, 1.3 billion acres were designated
for sustainable management, but only 27 million acres were actually
protected.
In Asia and the Pacific, 415 million acres were earmarked for
sustainable management, but only 48 million acres were managed that way.
In Africa, only 14.8 million acres of 272 million designated acres were
being protected.
The timber organization, a Yokohama, Japan-based group with 59 members
representing most of the world's countries with tropical forests, was
formed under the auspices of the United Nations in 1986 amid global
concern about disappearing tropical forests.
Its mission is to promote forest management that retains the "inherent
values" of the forest while allowing businesses like timber to support
local communities, the report said, adding: "It hasn't always worked."
"Some countries have already lost a significant part of their natural
forest heritage," the study said.
On a positive note, the report noted that the nearly 5 percent of the
land that is being managed correctly marks a drastic increase since the
group first surveyed the forests: about 89 million acres in 2005
compared to less than 2.5 million acres in 1988.
"It does give us some hope that sustainable forest management is a
viable land-use option and will continue to expand," one of the editors
of the report, Alastair Sarre, said in a telephone interview from
Australia.
Still, sustainable management isn't as profitable, at least over the
short term, as illegal logging, agriculture and other uses, he said.
Other obstacles include poor government coordination with local
communities and landowners; inadequate resources for enforcement,
management and monitoring; armed conflicts that cause social and
economic disruption; and long-standing land ownership disputes.
The least progress has been made in countries beset by civil war or
other conflicts, such as Central African Republic, Ivory Coast and
Liberia, the report said.
In contrast, significant advances have been made in Malaysia, Peru,
Bolivia and Brazil, it said.
Brazil, which has the largest percentage of the world's tropical
forests, requires landowners to maintain 80 percent of the forested
areas in the Amazon. Logging is permitted in the forest reserve, but
companies must file management plans to show their logging is carried
out in a sustainable manner, with minimal damage to the forest.
The report recommends that governments and industry create more economic
incentives for landowners and forest users; more international aid to
help implement better management and enforcement programs on the ground;
and legislation at the national level to protect tropical forests.
The survey will be released formally at the 40th Session of the
International Tropical Timber Council, which meets from May 29 through
June 2 in the Yucatan Peninsula city of Merida.
