Congress Set to Override State
Medical-Privacy Rights

May 24, the U.S. House Ways and Means Subcommittee on Health voted 8-5
to approve a bill (H.R. 4157) that will likely be used to override your
state medical-privacy rights. The sponsor of the bill is Republican
Nancy Johnson from Connecticut.
The legislation empowers unelected bureaucrats from the U.S. Department
of Health and Human Services (HHS) to decide how much or how little
privacy you can have.
If HHS decides to override your state medical-privacy rights, no state
law or state lawmaker will be able to protect you from the politics of
the Washington D.C. beltway and the lobbyists of health plans,
government, and data corporations who want your private data at no cost
and at their own discretion. Remember, these are the same folks who
wrote the federal HIPAA "no privacy" rule that today lets health plans,
law enforcement, public health officials and others access your entire
medical record without your knowledge or consent UNLESS state law says
otherwise.
This bill will allow HHS to prohibit your elected state representatives
from writing strong medical privacy laws. Since it is going to become
increasingly easy to share your health information electronically, our
laws should be modernized to provide stronger" not weaker" privacy
rights to meet citizens' demands for privacy in the information age. The
bottom line is that unless legislation states clearly that you have the
legal right to give or withhold your consent before your personal health
information is accessed or shared, it cannot be considered a real
privacy bill.

Good news; If your bag of tortilla (or any other) chips notes; "chips
have been fortified with vitamins A, D, E and K." That's the good
news. But the bad news: olestra, used in the making of the majority, has
been shown to deplete the body of those very same four vitamins, so the
FDA requires manufacturers of olestra products to provide the nutrients
that the product removes. Olestra can't be metabolized in the gut, so
it's neither absorbed nor digested. As it moves through the digestive
tract, olestra binds fat-soluble molecules (such as the four vitamins
listed above) and blocks their absorption. But research conducted by
Proctor & Gamble who makes olestra, found even more evidence of
nutrition depletion. In a study that examined the effects of an olestra
intake of eight grams per day (about 16 potato chips), blood levels of
important carotenoids such as lutein, lycopene and beta-carotene dropped
by more than half in just two weeks. Another study in Holland (published
in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition) produced similar results.
Olestra may also cause abdominal cramping and loose stools in 50% of
those who eat them.

Researchers at the
Lille Pasteur Institute examined data collected from more than 4,000
men (between the ages of 30 and 60) who participated in the Paris
Prospective Study 2. Blood levels of magnesium, zinc and copper were
compared to cancer and cardiovascular disease mortality. Over an
18-year follow up period, researchers recorded 56 deaths associated
with cardiovascular disease and 176 associated with cancer.
The Pasteur team reported these results:
* High levels of magnesium were associated with a 50 percent
decrease in cancer mortality risk, and a 40 percent decrease in
cardiovascular and all-cause mortality risk
* High levels of copper were associated with a 40 percent INCREASE
in cancer mortality risk, 30 percent increase in cardiovascular
mortality risk and a 50 percent increase in all-cause mortality risk
* When high copper levels were combined with low zinc levels all of
the risks associated with high copper increased significantly
* The Pasteur Institute team noted that smoking, high cholesterol
levels and aging are all linked with higher copper levels.
A high intake of zinc may prompt copper deficiency, and vice

The US Health Care System, rated 72nd in quality, but number one
in cost - worldwide, is known, by government reports, to be the
NUMBER ONE KILLER of Americans - ahead of heart disease, cancer,
and strokes. There is no argument against facts.
But what is up for speculation are the REASONS why this is so.
No one I know of (government agencies, think tanks, etc.) has
taken the time to describe, and rate, the reasons why US
citizens are being so short-changed.
It is easy to point fingers at the US Food & Drug Administration
(FDA) and show their faults. We could point with certainty at
those industries that spew their toxic waste into society. We
could certainly talk endlessly about the greed and corruption in
the health insurance industry, and their penchant to offer the
crappiest of health care paradigms as the only choices they'll
pay for. We could point our fingers at the hospital system, our
nursing homes, and the tendency towards "five-minute medicine."
We could talk about State Regulatory Boards and their inability,
and unwillingness to cull out bad practitioners, and bad
practices. We could talk about the intentional actions of the
sleazy "quackbuster" operation to stop any innovation in health
care.
I've written about all of these problems - and so have many
others.
But what if there is an industry, completely trusted by the
public, that knowingly, and intentionally, is causing
significant harm to America's health?
There is one. It is called "Official dentistry" and I believe
that this entity, by itself, is the number one problem in
American health care.
Let me tell you why I think so...

not now, and has not been for some time, about Dentists or
dentistry. It is about the Dental Bureaucracy protecting the

Study: Global Warming Boosts

WASHINGTON (AP) - Another reason to worry about global warming: more and
itchier poison ivy. The noxious vine grows faster and bigger as carbon
dioxide levels in the atmosphere rise, researchers report Monday.
And a CO2-driven vine also produces more of its rash-causing chemical,
urushiol, conclude experiments conducted in a forest at Duke University
where scientists increased carbon-dioxide levels to those expected in
2050.
Carbon dioxide is a greenhouse gas - a chemical that traps heat similar
to the way a greenhouse does - that's considered a major contributor to
global warming. Greenhouse gases have been steadily increasing in the
atmosphere since the Industrial Revolution.
Poison ivy is common in woods around the country, making it a bane of
hikers, campers, fighters of forest fires, even backyard gardeners. Its
itchy, sometimes blistering rash is one of the most widely reported
ailments to poison-control centers, with more than 350,000 reported
cases a year.
Compared to poison ivy grown in usual atmospheric conditions, those
exposed to the extra-high carbon dioxide grew about three times larger -
and produced more allergenic form of urushiol, scientists from Duke and
Harvard University reported.
Their study appears in this week's Proceedings of the National Academy
of Sciences.
"The fertilization effect of rising CO2 on poison ivy ... and the shift
toward a more allergenic form of urushiol have important implications
for the future health of both humans and forests," the study concludes.
