Tobacco is a mood-altering, addictive drug
that kills 500,000 Americans a year (200 million worldwide)
Costs $400 billion each year, according to "Smoking and Health
Review," (1992).
The American Lung Association says tobacco contains more than 4,000
chemicals, 60 of which causes cancer.
Some of the 'killers' are radioactivity, arsenic, ammonia, lead,
formaldehyde, nitrogen dioxide, cadmium, phenol, benzene and hydrogen
cyanide (the 'gas chamber' gas that poisons the respiratory enzymes)

Report: Problems at Wyeth Vaccine Plant
May 30,
NEWARK, N.J. (AP) - A federal inspection of a Wyeth Pharmaceuticals
plant that packages a childhood vaccine found numerous quality-control
failings last October, according to a published report.
Still, Wyeth officials say the safety and effectiveness of Prevnar, a
vaccine for pneumonia, ear infections and meningitis, were never
compromised, The Star-Ledger of Newark reported Sunday.
The Food and Drug Administration report detailed sloppy operating
procedures, dirty work areas and instances of contamination at a New
York plant.
It also found improper environmental monitoring and insects in a hallway
outside a room where the vaccine was put into vials, the newspaper
reported.
Prevnar generated nearly $1 billion in revenue last year for parent
Wyeth, the Madison, N.J.-based drug maker, and is among the company's
best-selling products. The vaccine is made at a Sanford, N.C., facility
but is packaged at Wyeth's plant in Pearl River, N.Y.
The company did not reveal the quality-control failings at its Pearl
River plant although such disclosure is not required, the newspaper
said. FDA inspectors reported 59 problems found during an inspection of
the plant last October.
The plant was shut down for a week late last year, creating a bottleneck
that led to shipment delays. Bernard Poussot, a Wyeth executive vice
president, told the newspaper the FDA mandated the shutdown. But FDA
spokeswoman Lenore Gelb said the agency took no such action.
Two other companies - Cardinal Health Inc. (CAH) and Baxter Healthcare
Corp. - will assume part of the production that was handled previously
at the Pearl River plant.
Still, some doctors said they worry about another shortage unless Wyeth
improves its manufacturing procedures. Prevnar is currently being
rationed, with children being given two shots instead of four by the age
of 15 months.
LENA'S NOTE: You know one of the things that struck me strange in
this report? The 59 problems are not required to be revealed! Food
establishment problems are required to be revealed and given anyone that
requests the info, so why not drug companies. We not only have to worry
about the mercury (thimeroseal) poisoning in the injections we now have
to worry about unknown contaminates. ANOTHER REASON TO NOT GIVE THEM TO
OUR CHILDREN!

The Stress is on the Job
Carpal tunnel syndrome is a major problem that starts out as simple
discomfort from repeated movements, but can lead to surgery and long
periods of disability.
The female to male ratio for those with carpal tunnel syndrome is about
6 to 1, but that doesn't necessarily mean that women are particularly
susceptible.
According to research from the Occupational Health Project at the
University of Maryland, here are the occupations most likely to develop
the syndrome:
assembler
laborer-nonconstruction
packaging- and filling-machine operators
janitors and cleaners
butchers and meat cutters
data entry keyers
The study also showed that the ratio of women to men among data entry
clerks is so high that it explains the entire difference in frequency of
carpal tunnel syndrome.

Dieting Can Weaken Immune System
By KRISTEN GELINEAU
SEATTLE (AP) - A new study has found that "yo-yo dieting" - repeatedly
losing, then regaining weight - may harm a woman's immune system. The
study by the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center also found that
maintaining the same weight over time appears to have a positive effect
on a woman's immune system, according to one of the lead researchers.
Researchers in the study, published Tuesday in the Journal of the
American Dietetic Association, interviewed 114 overweight but otherwise
healthy sedentary, older women about their weight-loss history during
the past 20 years. The women had to have maintained a stable weight for
at least three months before joining the study, which was funded by the
National Cancer Institute.
The study, which found that long-term immune function decreases in
proportion to how many times a woman has intentionally lost weight,
measured natural killer cell activity in the women's blood. Natural
killer cells are an essential part of the immune system, killing viruses
and leukemia cells, said Cornelia Ulrich, senior author and an assistant
member of the Hutchinson Center's Public Health Sciences Division.
Low natural killer cell activity has been associated with increased
cancer rates and a higher susceptibility to colds and infections, she
said.
"While one weight-loss episode of 10 pounds or more in the previous 20
years was not associated with current natural killer cell activity, more
frequent weight-loss episodes" were associated with a significant
decrease in such activity, Ulrich said.
The study found that women who maintained a fairly stable weight over
several years had higher levels of such cells than those whose weight
frequently fluctuated.
Those who reported losing weight more than five times had about a third
lower natural killer cell function, the study found. Conversely, women
who maintained the same weight for at least five years had 40 percent
greater natural killer cell activity as compared to those who maintained
their weight for fewer than two years.
Though no men participated in the study and further research is needed,
Ulrich said the immune systems of male dieters would likely be affected
the same way.
The findings, while intriguing, are preliminary, cautioned Ulrich, who
is also a research assistant professor in epidemiology at the University
of Washington School of Public Health and Community Medicine.
Researchers had to rely on the participants' own reports of their weight
loss histories and the analysis was based on blood samples collected at
a single point in time, representing a narrow sample.
A long-term study could provide more conclusive results, said Ulrich,
who is planning to collaborate with Canadian researchers who have been
working on a similar study.
Although the study suggests that yo-yo dieting is harmful, Ulrich
stopped short of saying that people should stop attempting to lose
weight.
"There's clearly evidence that weight loss is beneficial for your
health," she said. "What we're concerned about is this pattern of weight
cycling where women go up and down."
Exercise has been shown to boost immunity and temper some of the
negative effects of weight loss on the immune system, Ulrich said.
Despite its preliminary nature, the study is significant, said Katherine
Tallmadge, a spokeswoman for the American Dietetic Association in
Washington, D.C. Although dietitians have known for years the negative
psychological effects of yo-yo dieting, this appears to be the first
study to examine the long-term impact of such dieting on immunity, she
said.
People should avoid popular low-carb and low-fat diets that can produce
initial weight loss but rarely work in the long term, Tallmadge said.
"Study after study shows that more moderate restrictions are more likely
to last permanently," Tallmadge said. "That's why we registered
dietitians are urging people not to do the fad diets, and just try small
changes that they're more likely to be able to live with - even if the
weight loss is slower."---

FOOD OF THE
WEEK
~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~
The season is upon us here in the United States: Cherry Picking Time!
Cherries are a small, round, red stone fruit. They grow on trees in
small clusters. There are both sweet cherries and sour cherries. Sweet
cherries are round or slightly heart-shaped.
Cherries are eaten fresh, made into pie filling, flavored yogurt,
jellies, jams, sauces, stewed fruit, fruit drinks, ice cream and
candies. Cherries are a good source of vitamin C, the B vitamins,
potassium and many micronutrients. Most sweet cherries are eaten fresh.
Almost all sour cherries are processed for canning.
Compact, juicy, and colorful, cherries are nicely supplied with
nutrients, notably pectin (a soluble fiber that helps control blood
cholesterol levels), vitamin C, and beta-carotene, with some potassium.
(Sour cherries, which are sometimes called "pie cherries," have
considerably more vitamin C than sweet cherries do, though much of it is
lost when the cherries are cooked.)
Cherries are also high in a number of phytochemicals, including:
anthocyanins (pigments responsible for the red and blue colors of fruits
and vegetables), which are touted to have anticancer properties based on
their antioxidant activities that defend cells against harmful
carcinogens); and quercetin, a flavonoid, which is an antioxidant and
with anticancer properties as well as anti-inflammatory and
antihistaminic properties. It is this anti-inflammatory activity that
has made cherries (specifically cherry juice) of interest to people who
suffer from gout.
Both sweet and sour cherries besides being rich in fiber also contain
several vitamins, such as Vitamin A, Thiamin- B1, Riboflavin- B2 and
Vitamin C. Also mixed in are the minerals such as Calcium, Phosphorus,
Iron, Sodium, Niacin and Potassium.
There's even a possible dental health bonus in that studies have shown
that a substance (not yet identified) in cherry juice may help prevent
tooth decay.
Although some people find the cherry pit an annoying feature, the
cherry's only other shortcoming is their brief season, which lasts less
than 3 months.
The two basic categories of cherry: sweet and sour.
Sweet Cherries;
Bing: There are many commercial varieties of sweet cherries, but
the leader is the Bing, a large, round, extra-sweet cherry with
purple-red flesh and a deep red skin that verges on black when fully
ripe and great fresh.
Lambert: The second most popular variety is the Lambert, a
smaller, heart-shaped red cherry similar in taste and texture to the
Bing.
Rainier: The Rainier, a sweet cherry with yellow or pinkish skin,
is grown in limited quantities and is milder and sweeter than the Bing.
Royal Ann: Another light-skinned variety, the Royal Ann, is often
canned or made into maraschino cherries.
Sour cherries:
Most commercially grown sour varieties--such as Montmorency, which is
the best known--are canned or frozen for use as pie fillings or sauces,
although you can occasionally find fresh sour cherries during the summer
months at farmers' markets and roadside stands. Sour cherries are
smaller than sweet cherries and are a bright scarlet.
Both sweet and sour cherries have extremely short shelf lives, and must
be handled gently to reduce bruising and oxidation.
Sour cherries for processing are dumped into cold water immediately
following harvest. They are then transported to processing plants, where
they are washed, de-stemmed, pitted, and packed for freezing, all within
hours from harvest.
Sweet cherries are hydrocooled or dumped into cold water by pickers, and
packed in shallow flats after being sorted based on color and size,
usually the largest being 15/16 inch or higher.
Sweet cherries are usually shipped immediately, since shelf life is 2
weeks. They are subject to the same post-harvest diseases (brown rot,
grey mold, blue mold, Rhizopus, Alternaria, etc..) as other stone
fruits.
A nutrient rich food!
Maraschino cherries are made mostly from sweet cherries, but a
small proportion of sour cherries are brined for this purpose. Brined
cherries are de-colorized with SO2, then steeped in Marasca, a liqueur
distilled from the fermented juice of wild cherries.
Our favorite way of eating cherries are fresh and ready for popping into
the mouth. Nothing quite so great as picking and eating when they are in
season. But we also love cherry cobblers and pies?
Here are two versions of Cherry Cobblers for in season or off!
Fresh Cherry Cobbler
1 1/4 cups sugar
3 tablespoons cornstarch
4 cups pitted fresh tart cherries
1/4 teaspoon almond extract
1 cup flour
1 tablespoon sugar
1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
3 tablespoons shortening
1/2 cup milk
Preheat oven to 400?. Blend 1 1/4 cups sugar, cornstarch, cherries, and
almond extract in a medium saucepan. Cook over medium heat, stirring
constantly, until mixture thickens and boils. Continue to boil and stir
for 1 minute. Pour fruit mixture into an ungreased 2-quart casserole.
Place in oven while preparing dough.
Measure flour, 1 tablespoon sugar, baking powder, and salt into a mixing
bowl. Add shortening and milk. Cut shortening in several times then stir
until dough forms a ball. Drop dough in about 6 spoonfuls onto hot
fruit. Bake 25 to 30 minutes, or until topping is golden brown. Serve
warm with cream, if desired, or cool slightly and serve with vanilla ice
cream
Cherry Cobbler with Biscuit Mix
2 tablespoons quick cooking tapioca
2/3 cup sugar
1/8 teaspoon salt
1 can (20 ounces) drained canned tart cherries, reserve juice
1 cup cherry juice (add water to make 1 cup if necessary)
2 teaspoons butter
1 cup biscuit mix
2 tablespoons sugar
1/3 cup evaporated milk
Preheat oven to 425?. In a bowl, combine tapioca, 2/3 cup sugar, 1/8
teaspoon salt, cherries and the 1 cup cherry juice (if there isn't
enough cherry juice to make 1 cup, add a little water). Mix and put into
a lightly buttered 1 1/2-quart baking dish. Dot top of cherry mixture
with 2 teaspoons butter, cut in small pieces.
Bake at 425º for 12 minutes.
In a mixing bowl, combine biscuit mix, 2 tablespoons sugar, and
evaporated milk. Remove cherry mixture from the oven and drop dough by
tablespoonfuls on top to make 4 dumplings.
Bake for about 12 minutes longer, or until dumplings are lightly
browned.
Cherry Cobbler serves 4. Serve warm with vanilla ice cream of a dollop
of whipped topping.
15 Million Suffer Daily From This Deprivation! Sleep!
The body's vitality will continually go downhill without the
necessary real rest, which can only come from sleep!
Stop rushing through life!
Sleep regenerates your body and when deprived of less
rejuvenation then you open yourself up to avenues of
illness and disease!
With longer daylight hours peeking around the corner that
scenario becomes even more dangerous. Long days put
you into the right mode for depriving yourself of the most
needed health builders. Rest, healthy food and less stress,
which is a requirement of the body for maximum health!
I suspect that a growing number of auto accidents are
caused from sleep deprivation, even though I have no
real tried and true figures to back up my theory. Yet is
a theory that is talked about in emergency rooms and
police stations across the country. Nobody is paying
for the studies so no real figures have been tracked,
that I am aware of. I also suspect that a number of cases
of road rage could also be traced to sleep deprivation!
If you suffer from some or all of the following:
Irritability
Fatigue
Confusion
Inability to Concentrate
Anxiety
Depression
Generally not feeling well
Reoccurring nagging cold, flu or other illness
Ongoing allergies
Dizziness unaccounted for
You are possibly in the throes of sleep deprivation
and risking your health and that of others!
Large numbers of people are seeing their doctors today
for some or all of the above problems but never tell
him/her about their sleep patterns and doctors seldom
ever ask about your sleep habits. Most doctors are
living under the same fallacy as you are and that being,
sleep can be regained with one or two nights of catching
up. Wrong!
If you have two or more of the above symptoms you could
be suffering from sleep deprivation? A walking zombie and
unaware of it. That is how silent the problem can be.
Fallacies exist that lead a lot of people to believe that
insufficient sleep is not important to the well being of the
body. Those fallacies are;
*Sleeping requirements decrease with age.
*You can catch up on lost sleep later.
*You can get by on 3 or 4 hours sleep a night without damage to
yourself.
*Getting one or two nights of proper sleep is all that's
necessary.
Of which none are true. You cannot catch up on lost sleep
your body is geared for rest and regeneration daily, today
and not later. Nor does getting old require less sleep. Your
body is made to regenerate in a certain number of hours
while the body slows down during sleep and that
recharging period comes within the deep REM (rapid eye
movement) sleep. This is the period of rebuilding and
regenerating the central nervous system of the brain that
controls the majority of your body's systems. Aging
requires more regeneration not less!
Although newborns alternate between REM and Non-REM
sleep just like adults do, the pattern is different. REM
sleep accounts for about 50% of the newborn's sleep time;
compared to 20% for adults. Also, for newborns, the REM
cycle begins as soon as the baby has fallen asleep, (for adults
it begins 70 to 100 minutes after falling asleep). An adult
normally spends about 2 hours in REM sleep preceded by
the winding down phase of the body.
Studies now confirm that if your are one of the 15 million
who toss and turn without a good night's sleep, your body
is being affected, much more than simply making you tired.
The reports, released over the last couple of years, shows
that if you are not getting proper rest you are susceptible to:
1. Sickness, including diabetes and high blood pressure
2. Obesity
3. Fatigue
4. Infections & memory problems
5. Accidents & falls
6. Even premature death
Lot of people claim to have insomnia when in actuality
it?s simply bad choices, or work, or recreation habits!
The definitions of true insomnia are:
~Difficulty falling asleep
~Waking up frequently during the night (A common affliction
of people who drink alcohol and caffeine drinks in the
evening.)
~Difficulty returning to sleep
~Waking up too early in the morning
~Waking up too soon after falling asleep and the inability to
go back to sleep
~Unrefreshing sleep leaving you tired (A common problem
in auto-immune diseases)
I laud those of you who are aware of your sleep problem
and rush to your doctor and request sleeping pills. But that
request puts you at risk for other problems that are just
as devastating, such as;
Difficulty waking up
A hangover feeling
A reduction in short term memory
Difficulty concentrating
And even increased sleep problems and rebound insomnia
when trying to stop the sleeping pills.
And Personality changes.
Suffering from sleep deprivation isn't fun nor healthy so
getting the best sleep of your life even if you can't get a full
8 hours nightly, is a must.
Tips for getting quality sleep: 1) Take a walk after dinner! (No all out exercise, just a
10 or 15 minute walk) 2) Sit in a warm mineral bath before crawling into bed!
Need a recipe for a mineral bath email me
lena@envirodocs.com?subject=MineralBathRecipe 3) Do not eat within three hours of going to bed! 4) Stay away from caffeine drinks and nicotine! 5) If you nap during the day make sure it's not more than
5 or 10 minute nap! 6) Make sure your bedroom is free of all light and no
radio or TV blaring! 7) When you get up in the morning go out into the
sunlight as soon as possible and let it hit you full face for at
least 5 minutes, this will help set your biological clock. 8) Make sure your bed is comfortable and you are not
sharing bed space with others!
You may still have an occasional night of insomnia, but it
usually will only last a night or so if you do not give in to
it. When that happens do not drive or work machinery the day
After!
Critics Say Clean-Air Plan May Be a Setback for Parks
By FELICITY BARRINGER
Since April, the Environmental Protection Agency has announced a new
regulatory strategy for improving park air. Two proposed rules are
central to the approach. One, involving the interstate drift of
pollutants, is part of a nationwide plan to reduce power plant
emissions. The other, called the haze rule, requiring states to regulate
power plants and many other sources of haze, is directed at improving
air in national parks.
Environmentalists say the hitch is that power plants may gain a 14-year
free pass on complying with the engineering requirements called for in
the haze rule if they comply with the proposed interstate rule's
directives on reducing emissions.
