Greetings and thank you for being an optin subscriber!

I have a request? When you try to unsubscribe from the ezine please check and make sure the correct email that was used to subscribe is used to unsubscribe. I continue to get requests to unsubscribe, with little nasty remarks like they are unable to unsub... The incorrect email addy is given to unsub so it's impossible to know the correct one. As we swelter in recording breaking heat I'm thankful that I capable of having a home with air and ability to stay cool. Our normal June temps are usually in the 70's, which is really great but not this year! I don't know if the heat has anything to do with it but I had a rather "OMIGOSH" moment yesterday morning... I walked by the stove in the kitchen and it felt like it was on. I had used the oven the night before with dinner but had turned it off, at least I was pretty sure I did... I looked at the controls and they were off. I felt the stove top and it was hot, I opened the oven door and heat came rushing at me. It appears that the oven took on a life of its own either during night or just didn't shut off when I turned it off, but anyway we unplugged the electricity to it and turned off the propane and that seemed to work. My opinion is that the computer may have gone beserk so that means a new component, Maytag repairman due out today to let me know if I'm right or not... Have any of you had this happen? I would love to know if you have and what was done to correct it. I do not trust repairmen to be totally up front with me. Yes, that sounds paranoid but in 68 almost 69 years of life I've found a lot who have taken or tried to take advantage and so I want all the opinions I can get... Would you please let me know if this has happened to you...

RISE IN RATE OF TWIN BIRTHS MAY BE TIED TO DAIRY CASE

American women who eat dairy products appear to be five times as likely to give birth to fraternal twins as those who do not, according to a new study, and one explanation may lie in dairy products from cows injected with synthetic growth hormone.

Dr. Gary Steinman, an assistant clinical professor of obstetrics at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, reached that conclusion by looking at the medical records of 1,042 mothers who were vegans consuming no dairy products and comparing them with those of mothers who regularly ate dairy products.

His findings appear in the May issue of The Journal of Reproductive Medicine. Eating dairy products increases blood levels of insulinlike growth hormone, or I.G.F., and it is this increased hormone level that is associated with increased rates of multiple ovulation.

In a study published in 2000 and cited in the findings, vegan women had concentrations of I.G.F. that were 13 percent lower than those in women who regularly consumed dairy products.

Multiple births are associated with increased health risks for mothers and infants, but Dr. Steinman said he was not prepared to use these findings as the basis for advising women about diet before pregnancy.

"Since this is the first time diet has been implicated in an important role for determining twinning rate," Dr. Steinman said in an e-mail message, "it must be confirmed by others before rigid recommendations can be made concerning health care."

Insufficient diet in general lowers the rate of twin births, but Dr. Steinman said he had found evidence that the rate was directly related to levels of growth hormone.

"The more I.G.F., the more the ovary is stimulated to release additional eggs at ovulation," he said.

Animal studies, in rats and mice as well as in cattle, have convincingly demonstrated that increased serum levels of growth hormone are associated with increased ovulation.

All cow's milk has bovine growth hormone in it, naturally produced by the animal's pituitary gland. Many dairy farmers inject their cattle with recombinant bovine somatotropin, a synthetic version of the naturally occurring hormone. This increases size and milk production, but it has another effect: cows with higher growth hormone levels produce more twins.

The consumption of any dairy products increases blood levels of insulinlike growth hormone in humans, and consuming milk from cows that have been injected with synthetic growth hormone can have a correspondingly larger effect.

About one-third of American dairy cows are in herds where the hormone is used, said a spokesman for Monsanto, the only manufacturer of synthetic bovine growth hormone in the United States.

The evidence that eating dairy products increases the chances of multiple ovulation is suggestive, but not conclusive. Many factors, dietary and other, affect the rate of twin births. A study this month in Lancet, for example, suggests that the B vitamin folic acid may increase the survival of embryos in in vitro fertilization procedures, resulting in more twin births.

Fraternal twins run in families, so genetics also plays an important role. And the recent rise in the birth rate of twins is at least partly attributable to delayed childbearing, as older mothers are more likely to have twins.

The rate of twin births has also increased significantly since 1975, when assisted reproductive technology came into wide use. But these factors alone, Dr. Steinman said, do not explain the continuing increase in the rates in the United States since 1994, when recombinant bovine somatotropin was approved for sale.

In 2003, the United States had 3 sets of twins per 100 live births -- more than twice the rate of Britain, where growth hormone injection is banned. (Triplets and higher multiple births raise this figure to 3.18.)

Dr. Steinman suggested that one significant reason for the large difference was the recombinant bovine somatotropin.

"I am not claiming to be the first to show that variations in dietary amounts can affect the twinning rate," Dr. Steinman said. "What is new is specifying what in the diet may have this effect and how."

Using Aspartame To Get "High"

Can you imagine discovering that your 12-year-old child is using dry, powdered forms of aspartame to get high? I recently received an email from a woman who discovered her daughter had been eating dry aspartame to get "high."

"I learned months ago," she wrote, "that a friend of my 12-year-old daughter had turned her on to ingesting Crystal Lite? (with aspartame) without water to get "hyper." I consulted with our doctors, called Poison Control, and met with school administrators to see if they were aware of this.

"The message I received," she continued, "was 'Crystal Lite is perfectly safe and the problem was most likely in their heads.'"

As a concerned parent, this mother has been researching aspartame ever since. "With the listed symptoms/side affects of aspartame on your website," she continued, "it is apparent to me that the children are getting some type of 'altered' sensation. I know my daughter experiences a rapid heart beat, dizziness, headaches and nausea, to name a few reactions she has described to me."

A typical response from the marketers and manufacturers of aspartame is "there is no scientific evidence or research showing this type of reaction to aspartame is possible." Here's another common corporate reply: "the FDA approved aspartame, so it is safe." And how many times have you heard this one: "our research shows aspartame to be perfectly safe for children and during pregnancy. It is the most researched food additive in American FDA history."

Well, now consumers can add: children are taking Crystal Lite straight out of the can and eating it in powdered form to get "high."

Record numbers of disease syndromes, obesity, depression, and anxiety currently plague our youth - a problem turned epidemic AFTER aspartame and the diet sweetener craze flooded the market and dominated modern foods over 25 years ago. Many research scientists and nutritionists predicted such problems would result.

So Go Ahead and Snoop Around... After I received this very disturbing email, I decided to snoop around to find out if children in my area had heard of using Crystal Lite to get high. Well, I wouldn't be writing this article if the answer was "no - never." Children, indeed, have discovered eating the raw, powdered forms of aspartame gives them a rush they compare to taking too much Aderol®, an ADHD medication abused by non-ADHD kids to get high. I even spoke to a 13 year old who "knew someone who knew someone" who snorted Crystal Lite.

"The first couple of times he did it," the child disclosed, "his nose burned and he got a nosebleed. But once he got used to it, he said it was a good high, mostly because it was free. He just goes in his mom's pantry and grabs a scoop of her Crystal Lite, puts it in a baggie, and brings it to school. Someone always has some, and after school, we get a buzz."

"Ha," he sniggered, "if we're in class and one of our bros gets a nosebleed, we know he snorted some in the bathroom before class. Been a lot of nosebleeds lately; the teachers don't know a thing. Hey, we get to miss class and go to the nurse's office."

Americans have been more concerned about children using illegal drugs, alcohol, and smoking, while addictive and harmful chemicals in the food supply have gone unnoticed. We campaign against underage drug abuse using school awareness programs and implementing stricter laws for drug possession, but we allow children to have access to pharmaceutical drugs and dangerous food chemicals proven to be harmful to human health. Actually, diet sweeteners can be more dangerous to a child in multiple ways because these chemicals can be when used daily with no limits and easy access.

And, these dangerous chemicals are in the public schools. A child today can abuse ADHD drugs while swallowing them down with a diet cola. And we wonder why children have shorter attention spans, dangerous mood swings, and debilitating apathy!

Okay. Prove It!
Over the years of working with aspartame victims, I have documented many case histories of adverse reactions to the powdered form of aspartame found in Equal® and Crystal Lite. These reactions are more intensified compared to diluted forms of aspartame found in colas, liquid medicines, yogurts, etc. In my book Sweet Poison, I include case histories of seizures and blindness from regularly consuming powdered forms of aspartame.

The Department of Experimental Physiology, Medical School at the University of Athens, Greece, Institute of Child Health, Research Center, concluded in 2005 that high levels and cumulative toxic concentrations of aspartame metabolites decreased the membrane AChE activity, resulting in memory loss. Additionally, neurological symptoms, including learning and memory processes, appeared in the study to be related to the high or toxic concentrations of the sweetener metabolites.

At present, the only known treatments for increasing lack of memory, such as Alzheimer's Disease, are either NMDA receptor antagonists or acetylcholinesterase inhibitors, such as the pharmaceutical Aricept®. The Greek study shows that overuse of aspartame, as well as the long-term effects of aspartame, impair memory.

Because low doses of aspartame are shown to inhibit acetylchoinesterase, just like pharmaceutical treatments for people with memory loss, when a healthy individual with normal cholinergic functioning, such as a young child for example, starts administering a cholinesterase inhibitor when no memory loss has occurred, aspartame ingestion (according to the study) will eventually lead to down-regulation of post synaptic ACH receptors, and ultimately disrupt memory and learning. In other words, a healthy child that snorts or eats concentrated powdered aspartame can impair their memory.

Yes, indeed, there is a new "high" sourced to the chemicals found in sugar-free foods with aspartame.

"Please help," writes this concerned mother. "What do you suggest I do to inform the doctors and schools, and what studies back up the facts?"

The concept of using aspartame for a high is a shocking and new reality check; a concept many people do not want to admit exists. It has taken decades for underage alcohol consumption and smoking to become a publicized issue, so snorting aspartame may fall in line behind years of very slow progress in this awareness arena. But, at least the cat is out of the bag, creating a new awareness that this type of aspartame abuse is, indeed, a reality. Hopefully through this new awareness, parents can help their children.

My best suggestion: remove ALL diet sweeteners and food chemicals from your home, and return to a natural diet with a history of little to no harm to your child's health and safety. Also, insist that ALL diet soft drinks and flavored waters be removed from the public schools K-12. Talk to your children, and teach them which foods are real and healthy for them, and which foods are manmade, phony replicas of nutrition, resulting in damage to their growth and maturity.

FDA Clears Restricted Return of MS Drug

WASHINGTON (AP) - A multiple sclerosis drug pulled from the market last year because of a rare but life-threatening side effect will return under a restricted distribution program, health officials said Monday.

The Food and Drug Administration said it will let Biogen Idec Inc. (BIIB) and Elan Corp. PLC resume selling Tysabri under a requirement that doctors, pharmacies and patients register with a program designed to ensure the safe use of the drug.

Tysabri received FDA approval in November 2004. Biogen Idec, its Cambridge, Mass.-based manufacturer, voluntarily withdrew it in February 2005 after two patients in clinical trials died of a rare brain infection called progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy, or PML. Ireland-based Elan distributes the drug, also called natalizumab.

Only one other prescription drug, the irritable bowel treatment Lotronex, has ever returned to the market after being pulled because of dangerous side effects.

The FDA said Tysabri is to be used alone in patients who did not respond "adequately" to - or cannot tolerate - other MS drugs. Previously, some doctors prescribed it with Avonex, also made by Biogen Idec.

Researchers have estimated that as many as one in every 1,000 Tysabri users might fall prey to the JC virus that causes PML. MS patients supported the return of Tysabri (pronounced ty-SAH-bree), despite its risks.

"The benefits, No. 1, are worth it. No. 2, I am not afraid of dying, I am afraid of living with the disease and being a burden to my family," said Barbara Crooks, 48. The retired magnetic resonance imaging technologist from Irwin, Pa. took the drug for three months before its withdrawal.

Elan and Biogen Idec said Tysabri could be available as early as July, following an FDA review of elements of the risk management plan for the drug. Its price hasn't been set.

"The reintroduction of Tysabri offers new hope as an important therapeutic choice for patients living with this disabling disease. Tysabri has demonstrated compelling efficacy in MS," said James Mullen, Biogen Idec's chief executive officer.

The once-a-month intravenous drug is meant to treat patients with relapsing MS to reduce the frequency of flare-ups, which can complicate walking and seeing.

In February, the FDA allowed a clinical trial of Tysabri to continue, once it determined there had been no further cases of PML.

In March, FDA advisers recommended that the agency allow Tysabri sales to resume, with restrictions. At the time, dozens of tearful MS patients pleaded with the advisory panel to allow them to choose for themselves whether to take Tysabri.

James Blog, 48, a Huntington, N.Y. consultant, took Tysabri for 18 months, until the needle was literally pulled from his arm after the drug's withdrawal was announced while he underwent an infusion. Blog didn't know whether he'd drop Avonex for Tysabri.

"I am worried about it. I think if I go back on, I am taking X number of risks, which is why I want to see what precautions they'll take to protect patients," Blog said.

Recently published studies found that Tysabri alone or with standard interferon treatment cut the rate of relapse in MS patients by as much as two-thirds after two years and reduced the number of people whose MS got worse. The drug appears to work by blocking destructive immune cells leaving the bloodstream and entering the brain, where they can inflame and damage nerves.

Beyond PML, for which there is no cure, Tysabri's side effects include allergic reactions and an increased risk of unusual or serious infections, according to the FDA.

"Certainly the business of weighing the relative risks and benefits will lead to different conclusions for different people with MS," said Dr. John Richert, vice president for research and clinical programs at the National Multiple Sclerosis Society.

The registry program will require patients to undergo magnetic resonance imaging, or MRI, before starting treatment to help doctors differentiate between future MS symptoms and signs of PML. Patients also will have to undergo evaluations three and six months after they start taking the drug, and every six months following that, the FDA said.

Burt Adelman, Biogen Idec's executive vice president for development, said the program would pose "a significant and complex challenge."

"We have said there will be a slow uptake initially as we roll out the risk map and train sites to manage it, but we believe there is a very significant demand," Adelman said.

Multiple sclerosis affects about 350,000 Americans. Its cause is unknown and there is no cure.

I think not but to those who hide their heads in the sand and refuse to accept what sits in front of their noses I guess it is... Simpler MS treatment, stay away from neurological altering chemicals such as artificial sweeteners, sodas, chemical medications, treated drinking water, etc.

The company Ventria Bioscience has provoked controversy by growing an experimental diarrhea drug in rice genetically engineered with a human gene. Environmental groups, food corporations, and farmers have managed to keep Ventria's rice farms out of California and Missouri, and they continue to allege that Ventria is recklessly using untested technology.
