A houseful of grandchildren with their laughter and requests of certain foods or places to go lets me know summer is really here. Each year we have a houseful and as you read this we are probably off to the Grand Canyon or to Jerome Ghost Town or maybe The Natural Bridge as they have these three things on their list of "let's do Mema" this year but as I write this a conclusion of which hasn't been reached. What they wanted to do was hike down in the Canyon but I don't have the time to devote to that trek, or maybe I'm just not wanting to admit that I am not up to that kind of climb. You know that when you walk down into it you have to come back up and that is one steep climb... I'm passing on that request...

Drats! As I go into my spam folder each morning and find 10,000 to 17,000 emails, which I promptly delete and never read, I wonder why people are wasting so much of their time? I say, Get a life and do something constructive...

Kids With Ear Infections Recover Without Antibiotics

(Ivanhoe Newswire) -- New research from the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston shows children with non-severe ear infections can recover without antibiotics.

Specifically, 66 percent of children with non-severe ear infections who were given pain medication and monitored by their parents recovered without prescriptions.

The success of the watchful waiting approach is welcome news for doctors who are looking to stop the overuse of antibiotics, which has bred new strains of bacteria that are more difficult to kill.

For the investigation, doctors were provided guidelines with specific criteria for diagnosing the severity of the ear infection. After all, this treatment approach is only meant for children with infections that are not severe.

After evaluating the degree of the infection, doctors gave parents information about the risks and benefits of a non-antibiotic treatment regimen. The parents were also shown how to manage their child's pain and how to recognize signs of the infection getting worse. In addition, parents had 24-hour phone access to doctors who could prescribe an antibiotic or suggest another doctor's visit if necessary.

The study included 223 children between ages 6 months and 12 years in the study. Some were randomly selected for watchful waiting, while the others received immediate treatment of antibiotics.

Children treated immediately with antibiotics did recover faster; however, after 10 days of treatment, bacteria from their nose were more likely to be drug resistant.

"This study is an exclamation mark on the importance of doctors being proactive about this issue of antibiotic resistance," says lead study author David McCormick, M.D. "And it's proof that parents will accept a non-antibiotic approach if they're provided with education and allowed to help make the decision."

The Romantic Fruit

This fruit is probably the most used fruit for romantic interludes. Some chocolate covered others simply fresh? Little do they know how healthy strawberries are... This time of year will find this romantic fruit in our home, but not for long. We have a small strawberry patch but gives us a bowl full every week or so and taste so much sweeter than the ones I buy in the store. Of course they have no fertilizers, chemicals or pesticides on them which doesn't detract from the taste or nutrients.

This time of year Strawberries make their way onto may tables in the form of strawberry pie, shortcake and mixed with other fruits as smoothies or pureed and added to fruit punch the rest of the year. Making for a great sweets treat year round when frozen. Our grandkids love the berries frozen whole to eat like candy, which makes for a healthy body and strong teeth as well as regular bowel habits.

Strawberries contain these teeny tiny seeds that make up their mystic and crunchiness. These berries carry a huge portion of antioxidants. The nutrients known to prevent and/or kill cancers of various types. Loaded with minerals and vitamins that is healthy for every body!

Berries of many kinds have been used for centuries as a diarrhea and anemia treatment. Leading me to believe berries and in this instance strawberries are very important in preventing problems.

Horticulturists have always known that a seed holds the embryo of new life. Scientists are confirming that berry seeds contain high levels of life prolonging Essential Fatty Acids or EFA?s, just as effective as other EFA bearing nuts and fish, known to be an effective protection against heart disease, diabetes and cancer.

Alternative Medicine has always said that health starts in the Intestinal system with absorbing while disseminating nutrients through out the body, as well as the intestinal systems ability to move along toxins before they can damage the body, and the faster this happens the better for your health. Speedy removal of toxins and dissemination of nutrients happen when the intestines contain the proper amounts of probiotic bacteria and the proper fiber is introduced, and these tiny little seeds move things along swiftly.

EFA's and Your Health

Essential fatty acids (EFA) found in berry seeds are linoleic, alpha linolenic and oleic acids. EFA's are abundant in the seed oil of berries. Also is a very rich source of alpha and gamma tocopherol as well as y-tocopherol. This tocopherol or Vitamin E rich composition is said to be important in the prevention of degenerative disease such as diabetes. Previous testing established the presence of ellagic acid, a cancer fighting polyphenolic, found and concentrated primarily in the teeny tiny seeds of the berries. Medical research programs studying ellagic acid and demonstrated its ability to inhibit the number and size of chemically induced tumors of the esophagus of rats. (Stoner and Mukhtar, 1995).

Fresh strawberries have a delicious naturally sweet taste but there's only about 50 calories in a whole cup! Strawberries are highly nutritious. Eight medium size fresh berries contains about 150% of the recommended daily intake of vitamin C and 20% of folate. They're also high in potassium and a good source of dietary fiber.

Choose strawberries with a bright red color and fresh green caps. Since strawberries do not continue to ripen after they've been picked, don't buy berries that are partly white and unripe. The size of a strawberry is not a factor in determining the sweetness or taste. That's determined by the variety of strawberry, weather and growing conditions, and the degree of ripeness when picked. Fully ripe berries, large or small will be equally sweet and flavorful.

Do not wash fresh strawberries or remove the caps until you're ready to eat them or use them in a recipe. Store strawberries in a covered container in the refrigerator and use them as soon as possible after you buy them. To wash strawberries, place them in a large strainer or colander and rinse with cool water. Remove their green caps with the point of a paring knife or gently twist and pull them off.

Fresh Strawberry Pie

1 quart strawberries - washed and hulled
1 T. lemon juice
1/2 cup sugar
1 T. cornstarch
1 baked pie shell
whipped cream or whipped topping

Preparation -
Crush 1 cup strawberries in a food processor or blender. Pour the crushed berries in a saucepan. Add the lemon juice, sugar, & cornstarch. Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, until the mixture is thickened and clear. Remove from heat & chill. Fill pie shell with whole strawberries and when mixture has cooled pour over strawberries or you can add the strawberries to cooled mixture then pour into pre-baked pie shell. Chill for 1 to 2 hours before serving. Top individual servings with whipped cream or whipped topping. Enjoy!

Sadly food alone will not do the trick as it would in centuries past so we can't rely totally on our food intake, because of the lack of nutrients in our soils and the pollutants added in the form of air pollution, pesticides and fertilizers. Read the 1936 Report Click Here

Senate Energy Bill Contains Provision for Hundreds of Millions of
Dollars in Loan Guarantees for Power Project

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Buried in the 700-plus page energy bill currently
under debate in the U.S. Senate is a provision that provides hundreds of
millions of dollars worth of federal loan guarantees for a power project
apparently to be built by four former Enron executives. One of the
former executives is Thomas White, former head of Enron's retail and
energy trading in California during the energy crisis who later served
as President Bush's Secretary of the Army.

Title XIV, Section 1403(c)(1)(B) of the Senate energy bill provides
federal loan guarantees for "a project to produce energy from coal ?
mined in the western United States using appropriate advanced integrated
gasification combined cycle technology that minimizes and offers the
potential to sequester carbon dioxide emissions and ? shall be located
in a western State at an altitude greater than 4,000 feet."

Public Citizen's investigation to find out who this loan would benefit
narrowed the answer to just one company: Houston-based DKRW Energy. This
company, named after the four Enron executives that founded it -- Jon C.
Doyle, Robert C. Kelly, H. David Ramm and White -- formed a subsidiary,
Medicine Bow Fuel & Power, to develop a $2.8 billion coal gasification
project in Medicine Bow, Wyo. The DKRW facility meets all the criteria
required in the legislation: The coal will be supplied from Arch Coal
mines neighboring the power facility; it will stuff carbon dioxide
emissions into oil wells; and the facility will be located in a western
state (Wyoming) at an altitude above 4,000 feet.
