Tobacco is a mood-altering, addictive drug
that kills 500,000 Americans a year (200 million worldwide)
Costs $400 billion each year, according to "Smoking and Health
Review," (1992).
The American Lung Association says tobacco contains more than 4,000
chemicals, 60 of which causes cancer.
Some of the 'killers' are radioactivity, arsenic, ammonia, lead,
formaldehyde, nitrogen dioxide, cadmium, phenol, benzene and hydrogen
cyanide (the 'gas chamber' gas that poisons the respiratory enzymes)

First Cigarette May Change Teens'
Brains and Behavior
Research has shown that the effects of nicotine from smoking appeared to
be more responsive to the adolescent brain than the adult brain. Also,
it was discovered that the initial inhale of nicotine during adolescence
altered the behavioral reaction to the drug, which might help
researchers understand the tendency of teen smokers to carry the smoking
habit into their adult years.
A study performed revealed definite behavior changes in adolescents
after they took their first puff of nicotine.
One researcher theorized that the cause of this could be related to the
satisfying and heightened sensitivity among adolescents and also might
explain their decision to continue smoking into adulthood. Evidence from
the study supported the notion that cigarette addiction was based on
biological factors.
It is also believed that the teens who smoked every day would have
greater difficulties quitting as opposed to those who began smoking as
adults.
Components of The Study
*Adolescent and adult rats were analyzed for their conditioned place of
preference.
*The rats were able to choose which side of the test chamber they
preferred based on specific environmental stimulus.
*The animals gradually began to spend the majority of their time in the
area where they were provided with a drug that produced pleasurable
effects.
Result of The Study
*Positive reactions to nicotine weren?t found among the adult and late
adolescent group of rats.
*The testing of early adolescent rats displayed a strong liking to
nicotine after a single brief encounter with it.
*The late adolescent rats showed more signs of vulnerability to the
nicotine.
Findings from this study supported the need to restrict the availability
of tobacco products from adolescents.

One man dies and 50 others are infected in Australia. In the U.S., this
bug is also on the rise maybe in your community. And in Canada where
similar infection is occurring, there have also been major outbreaks of
yet another type of infection that is spreading in the community and
affecting major hospitals. To make matters worse, experts in the U.K.
warn that a new big bug, a nightmarish one that drugs can't kill, and
one they call the "mother of all superbugs" will become a major threat
to health. All this, mainly because doctors continue to be irresponsible
in the way they prescribe antibiotics.
Methicillin-Resistant _Staphylococcus aureus_ Infections Among
Competitive Sports Participants - Colorado, Indiana, Pennsylvania,
& Los Angeles County, 2000-2003
------------------------------
Although outbreaks of methicillin-resistant _S. aureus_ (MRSA)
usually have been associated with health-care institutions, MRSA is
emerging as a cause of skin infections in the community. This report
summarizes several reported clusters of skin and soft tissue
infections associated with MRSA among participants in competitive sports
and identifies possible risk factors for infection (e.g., physical
contact, skin damage, and sharing of equipment or clothing).
The findings underscore
1) the potential for MRSA infections among sports participants;
2) the need for health-care providers to be aware that skin and soft
tissue infections occurring in these settings might be caused by MRSA;
and
3) the importance of implementing prevention measures by players,
coaches, parents, and school and team administrators.

"After severe pain and numbness in both hands, and the loss of sleep, I
was resigned to a Carpal Tunnel operation. Through my daughter I learned
of the Julstro Self Treatment System. My family doctor's emphatic "no!"
to an operation made me decide to try this system. The easy to follow
videos, with Julie's and Dr. Cohen's assistance, demonstrated the
procedures, which I followed. They gave me relief and my first night's
painless sleep.
I'm continuing using the Julstro System because it allows me control in
eliminating my pains and suffering. It frees me from costly operations
and doctor visits. Believe me, it's the only way to go...I regret not
doing this sooner!
Years before we found the Julstro System, my husband had a painful
Carpal Tunnel Syndrome operation on both hands. Lately he was
experiencing pain in his left upper chest and shoulder. I invited him to
join me in watching the video. His participation ended with the remark
"Great!".

Breast milk drug can be harmful, FDA
warns
Associated Press
June 8, 2004
WASHINGTON -- The government is warning breast-feeding women not to use
a drug called domperidone to increase their milk production, saying it
not only is illegal but could harm both mother and child.
The Food and Drug Administration cracked down on the drug Monday, moving
to end imports and ordering several companies to quit making or
distributing it here.
The concern: reports of serious side effects among adult users, and
domperidone is excreted in breast milk.
Domperidone has never been approved for sale in the United States but is
used in some countries to treat certain stomach disorders.
A side effect is stimulation of a breast milk-producing hormone -- but
no country has approved the drug's use for lactation, and several
require explicit warnings against use by breast-feeding mothers.
Women have been able to order it from abroad via the Internet, but the
FDA has discovered a few U.S. pharmacies providing "compounded" supplies
-- drugs that pharmacists brew up specially for certain customers.

Cantaloupe
A refreshing vine grown fruit that is 89% water
containing lots of minerals and vitamins!
Growing up we ate a lot of melons. Living in the Phoenix area with all
types of melons grown all around us it was inevitable and I am now
grateful to have had that opportunity.
Cantaloupe season is just around the corner, but in most parts of the
world you can get them the grocery store anytime of the year? June and
July is the typical season, here in Arizona, for full-swing harvest.
The best melons are slightly golden (not green), heavy, and fragrant at
the tender, indented end. Avoid discolored ones, but don't worry about
smooth a discolored patch; that's where the growing melon rested on the
ground.
1/8 of a large cantaloupe contains the Minerals; Calcium - is essential for healthy bones and teeth, normal blood
clotting, and nervous system functioning. Necessary to regain the proper
pH balance Iron - Iron is part of hemoglobin, the oxygen-carrying component
of the blood. Iron is also part of myoglobin, which helps muscle cells
store oxygen. Necessary for healthy blood chemistry and is essential for
recovery from illness. Magnesium - needed for bone, protein, and fatty acid formation,
making of new cells, activating B vitamins, relaxing muscles, clotting
blood, and forming adenosine triphosphate (ATP; the energy the body runs
on). The secretion and action of insulin also require magnesium. Is a
natural tranquilizer. Known as an "anti-stress mineral," it aids in
relaxing nerves, relieving tension, assisting digestion, activating
enzymes important for protein and carbohydrate metabolism, and
modulating the electrical impulses across all cell membranes. Is
important in the production and transfer of energy, muscle contraction
and relaxation, and nerve conduction. It also aids regularity, is
necessary to keep vertebrae in their proper position, induces restful
sleep, purifies and purges body tissues (combats acids, toxins, gases,
impurities, and neutralizes poisons), and lowers fever. Magnesium is
stored in the bowel, nerves and ligaments Phosphorus - contributes to bone health, is often regarded as a
twin nutrient to calcium. Is involved, either directly or indirectly, in
nearly every biological or cellular function in the body. Potassium - the mineral of life! Needed for growth, building
muscles, transmission of nerve impulses, heart activity etc. Potassium,
together with sodium - work together for the nervous system to transmit
messages as well as regulating the contraction of muscles. Potassium
also regulates water balance, assists recuperative powers, aids
rheumatic or arthritic conditions - detoxing acids to leave the joints
and ease stiffness - is vital for the elimination of wastes, is a
natural pain desensitizer, helps control convulsions, headaches, and
migraines, promotes faster healing of cuts, bruises and other injuries,
and generally contributes to a sense of well being. Potassium is stored
in the muscles... Sodium - A mineral that regulates fluid balance by controlling
the flow of liquids in and out of each cell, sparks nerve impulses,
helps the body to process and digest proteins and carbohydrates. Zinc - Zinc is an essential mineral that is found in almost every
cell. It stimulates the activity of approximately 100 enzymes, which are
substances that promote biochemical reactions in your body. Zinc
supports a healthy immune system, needed for wound healing, helps
maintain your sense of taste and smell, and is needed for DNA synthesis.
Zinc also supports normal growth and development during pregnancy,
childhood, and adolescence. Copper - Copper is needed to absorb and utilize iron. Copper is
needed to make adenosine triphosphate (ATP), the energy the body runs
on. Synthesis of some hormones requires copper, as does collagen (the
"glue" that holds muscle tissue together) and tyrosinase (the enzyme
that puts pigment into the skin) copper is needed for healthy hair. Manganese - is needed for healthy skin, bone, and cartilage
formation, as well as glucose tolerance. It also helps activate
superoxide dismutase (SOD)-an important antioxidant enzyme. Selenium - activates an antioxidant enzyme called glutathione
peroxidase, which may help protect the body from cancer. Selenium has
also induced 'apoptosis' (programmed cell death) in cancer cells.
1/8 th cantaloupe also contains the Vitamins; C (carotenoids) - Is a water-soluble vitamin that functions as a
powerful antioxidant. One of vitamin C's important functions is to
protect LDL cholesterol from oxidative damage. Keeps the immune system
strong and help build healthy gums. Thiamin - is necessary for normal growth, normal carbohydrate
metabolism and normal functioning of the heart, nerves and muscles.
Thiamin deficiency results in retarded growth and nerve disorders, and a
condition known as beriberi. Riboflavin (B2) - required for normal growth, vigor, healthy
skin and mucosa, and normal eye function. Niacin (B3) - is necessary for normal growth and skin health,
normal functioning of the stomach and intestines, nervous and
circulatory systems, and for carbohydrate, fat, and protein metabolism. Pantothenic acid - a B-complex vitamin, is essential for humans
and animals for growth, reproduction, and normal physiological
functions. It is a precursor of the coenzymes, CoA and acyl carrier
protein of fatty acid synthase, which are involved in more than 100
different metabolic pathways including energy metabolism of
carbohydrates, proteins and lipids, and the synthesis of lipids,
neurotransmitters, steroid hormones, porphyrins and hemoglobin. B-6 - helps control metabolism, benefits nervous system and
immune function. Folate - is associated with the prevention of colon, rectal,
cervical, lung, stomach and esophageal cancers. Increasing your intake
of folate decreases the homocysteine levels in your blood. High
homocysteine levels are associated with heart disease, and suspected to
increase your risk of all the other ailments we listed above. Folic acid - strengthens your immune system and boosts energy
B-12 - aids in digestions and said to prevent anemia, is needed
for normal nerve cell activity, DNA replication, and production of the
mood-affecting substance called SAMe (S-adenosyl-L-methionine). Vitamin
B12 works with folic acid to control homocysteine levels. A (Retinol ) - an antioxidant that keeps skin soft and supple
good for the eyes. helps cells reproduce normally?a process called
differentiation. E (Tocopherol ) - an antioxidant said to prevent cardiovascular
disease and cancer, improves circulation, promotes healthy skin and
hair.
It would seem to me that 1/8 or more of a cantaloupe would be a great
health builder!
Store at room temperature; refrigerate when ripe.
Great when sliced tossed with lime juice and fresh ginger for a
refreshing breakfast. Freeze peeled chunks and blend into smoothies.
Skewer cantaloupe and pineapple pieces and grill. Cantaloupe is great
snack after exercise. Helps rebuild and replenish energy without gaining
weight.
A little side note of interest, probably to nobody but me. If
you've ever passed a melon field where vines are being turned over,
preventing the melons from rotting on the ground side, with a device
pulled behind a tractor, my father invented that in my teen years!
Malaria-drug diagnosis for 'coward' GI
By Mark Benjamin and Dan Olmsted
United Press International
Published 6/4/2004
WASHINGTON, June 4 (UPI) -- The first U.S. soldier charged with
cowardice since the Vietnam War is suffering from damage to his
brainstem that likely was caused by the anti-malaria drug he was
given in Iraq, a military doctor has concluded.
Staff Sgt. Georg-Andreas Pogany was diagnosed this week with
"likely Lariam toxicity," according to medical records from
Naval Medical Center San Diego reviewed by United Press
International.
Pogany suffered a panic attack in Iraq last year after seeing a
dead body and was charged by the Army with cowardice, an offense
punishable by death and a charge not seen since the Vietnam era,
which ended almost 30 years ago. The charge later was reduced to
dereliction of duty.
An Icy Riddle as Big as Greenland
Andrew C. Revkin/The New York Times
Dr. Joseph R. McConnell is studying climate changes in Greenland.
SWISS CAMP, Greenland Ice Cap - This vaulting heap of ice and the
swirling seas nearby have emerged as vital pieces of an urgent puzzle
posed by global warming. Can the continuing slow increase in worldwide
temperatures touch off abrupt climate upheavals?
Each piece of the puzzle is a dynamic and complicated body of water.
One, the North Atlantic, is some two miles deep and liquid. The other,
this ice cap, is two miles high and solid. For scale, think of it as a
freshwater Gulf of Mexico that has been frozen, inverted and plunked
atop the world's largest island.
Experts have reported a series of observations in recent months that
show that the ice and the waters here are in a state of profound flux.
If the trends persist, they could mean higher sea levels and widespread
coastal flooding. There is also a small chance that the changes could
lead to a sharp cooling in parts of the Northern Hemisphere.
Although nobody expects shifts as rapid or cataclysmic as portrayed in
the new movie "The Day After Tomorrow," the cooling could disrupt the
relatively stable climatic conditions in which modern human societies
have evolved.
In the last few years, Greenland's melt zone, where summer warmth turns
snow on the edge of the ice cap into slush and ponds of water, has
expanded inland, reaching elevations more than a mile high in some
places, said Dr. Konrad Steffen, a glaciologist at the University of
Colorado.
Recent measurements by NASA scientists show that such melting can have
outsize effects on the ice sheet. Meltwater formed on the surface each
summer percolates thousands of feet down through fissures, allowing the
ice to slide more easily over the bedrock below and accelerating its
slow march to the sea.
Some jutting tongues of floating ice, where riverlike glaciers protrude
into the sea, are rapidly thinning. Measurements this year by Dr.
Steffen and others on the Petermann Glacier in northern Greenland show
that more than 150 feet of thickness melted away under that tongue in
the last year. Such melting can speed the seaward movement of ice in the
same way that removing a doorstop lets a door swing freely.
As Dr. Steffen settled in with three colleagues for weeks of grueling
research at this half-buried wind-tattered camp 4,000 feet up the flanks
of the ice cap, he described how other Greenland glaciers were speeding
their discharge of icebergs into the sea.
"If other ice streams start to react in a similar way," he said, "then
we will actually produce much more fresh water."
This influx of fresh water could block North Atlantic currents that help
moderate the weather of the Northern Hemisphere. "If that feedback kicks
in," he said, "then the average person will worry."
Some oceanographers say global warming may already be pushing the North
Atlantic toward instability. In less than 50 years, waters deep in the
North Atlantic and Arctic have become significantly fresher, matched by
growing saltiness in the tropical Atlantic. Worldwide, seas have
absorbed enormous amounts of heat from the warming atmosphere. A big
outflow of water from Greenland could take the system to a tipping
point, some say.
In past millenniums when such oceanic breakdowns occurred, the climate
across much of the Northern Hemisphere jumped to a starkly different
state, with deep chills and abrupt shifts in patterns of precipitation
and drought from Europe to Venezuela. Some changes persisted for
centuries.
But whether something similar is likely to result from the new melting
in Greenland is far from clear. The forces that caused abrupt climate
change in the past, like monumental floods released from collapsing
ice-age glaciers, are different from the much slower ones being measured
today.
Gaps in understanding are enormous. Scientists have been unable to
devise computer simulations that consistently replicate past jolts to
the climate, leaving intellectual heartburn about the future.
"The models are not nearly as sensitive as the real world," Dr. Richard
B. Alley, an expert at Penn State on Greenland's climate history, said.
"That's the kind of thing that makes you nervous."
