Caffeine in Soft Drinks Similar to Nicotine in Cigarettes
 
Caffeine in soft drinks has been compared to nicotine in cigarettes, which is one reason why researchers have recommended young children shouldn't be allowed to consume caffeinated sodas during school hours.

What's more, the results of one study found that just a few ounces of a caffeinated soft drink can make first-graders rowdy and inhibit their concentration.

Soft Drink Study

Researchers served 20 first-graders (10 boys and 10 girls) either caffeine-free or caffeinated soda over a time span of three weeks. The students' teachers monitored and rated their behavior; neither the teachers nor the students knew which kind of soda was being consumed.

The results indicated children who drank caffeinated soft drinks suffered from behavioral problems. Moreover:

The first-graders clearly preferred caffeinated soft drinks to caffeine-free brands; consumption of caffeinated soda was, on average, 9.45 ounces on days the children were allowed to drink sodas, compared to 7.55 ounces of caffeine-free soda.

And compared to when the children drank caffeine-free soda, behavioral problems were rated an astounding 432 percent worse on days they consumed caffeinated soft drinks instead.

Based on the results, researchers suggested psychological and learning enhancement should be included in the list of dental caries (decay), sugar load in promotion of obesity and adverse affect of cola consumption on children.

Same Old Fat Loss Story Getting Old!

As I read the doctor's statement;
 
"There is no such thing as a "diet" that works. The only way to lose weight and keep it off is to make a permanent change in your eating habits--cut out the carbs and refined sugars and concentrate on foods that are high in protein and animal fats."
 
I became livid and wondered how so many could go so wrong and it's getting on my nerves that the same old fat loss story that truly isn't the whole story to forever fat prevention
 
Our unlearned medical profession hasn't been taught the whole story and has no idea that the majority of what a person eats is actually useless food even if they are following the government dietary guidelines to a T. So changing what you eat habit isn't the whole story!

That Great Green Stalk!

This particular vegetable is looked on by a lot of dieters as taboo simply because it is usually a stick that is eaten while wishing they were eating something else… Little do they know it is very healthy and once thought of only as medicine! Celery is related to carrots, parsnips and parsley. Also related to anise, which has a licorice-like flavor. Was once considered a medicinal herb rather than a vegetable.

Celery probably originated in the Mediterranean area. It grows wild in marshy places over a large area covering parts of Sweden south through Europe, Algeria, Egypt, Asia Minor, the Caucasus and south-eastward toward the Himalayas. It has also been found growing wild in Tierra del Fuego (the southernmost tip of South America), California and New Zealand.

According to Sturtevant, celery was known to the Greeks and Romans only as a medicine. It was not used as a food, and whether or not it was cultivated is unclear. Mentions of celery from ancient writings are: "selinon" from Homer's Odyssey (850 BC), "selinon heleion" from Hippocrates, "eleisoselinon" from Theophrastus and Dioscorides and "helioselinon" from Pliny and Palladius. According to the Britannica Encyclopaedia, the Greeks and Romans used celery as a flavoring. As late as the 16th century. Fuchsius in 1542, Walafridus Strabo in the 9th century, Tragus in 1552, Pinaeus in 1561, Pena and Lobel in 1570 and Ruellius Dioscorides in 1529 all spoke of celery's medicinal properties. As late as 1722, celery was still referred to as "a herb eaten to purify the blood."

The Chinese also used celery as a medicine. It is mentioned in Chinese writings from the 5th century AD and in 1640 is described as a cultivated plant. Cultivation of celery apparently began in the 16th century in Italy and northern Europe, and in 1623 use of celery as a food in France is recorded. For the next century, its culinary use was limited to that of a flavoring. In 1726, celery seed was sold in England for planting for use of the plant in soups and broths. By the middle of the 17th century celery stalks and leaves were sometimes eaten with an oil dressing in France and Italy.

The first celery's known cultivation was similar to the wild plant and had hollow stalks. In the late 1700's and early 1800's, the cultivated type was improved and the first celery with large, fleshy succulent petioles appeared.

According to tests by Researchers at the University of Chicago, celery – this week's food - reduces cholesterol levels by as much as 7 points with as little as 2 stalks a day. Celery aids in the process of removing and preventing cholesterol by increasing bile acid secretion. Celery also contains butyl phthalide, another nutrient that is said to help reduce high cholesterol.

Medical experts say that celery is good for people with circulation problems because celery fights fat. Hence the reason for celery sticks to munch on when dieting…

Celery contains nutrients that stimulate the elimination of fat throughout the body says a physician at the University of Italy in Milan. Celery is good for helping to clean the mouth and teeth during eating of it raw.

Celery is high in calcium. High calcium intake invigorates the endocrine system which releases hormones that break down fatty buildup in cells.

Celery in cholesterol control; By aiding the body's processes in dissolving already accumulated cholesterol on the interior walls of the arteries, known as plaque, and helping the liver to metabolize and prevent additional formation of cholesterol.

Celery root or Celeriac as it is known is another story to be covered at a later time…

In our house celery's favorite presentation is either stuffed with cream cheese or peanut butter. Kids love it… but my most favorite and one I usually like for breakfast is the traditional Waldorf salad. My recipe below…

Lena's Waldorf Salad

Ingredients:

1 cup apples chopped, (Granny smith or a Sweet tart apple or a combination of different tart apples)
1 tablespoon lemon juice
1 cup celery, chopped
1/4 cup mayonnaise
1/4 cup chopped walnuts

Sprinkle apples with lemon juice after they are chopped. I usually do this in the food processor as the apples are chopped up…
Add all other ingredients.

Toss until all pieces are coated with mayonnaise and serve. Taste is better if let to set while before serving...

The New Science of Spinal Regeneration

Everything from standing upright, to sleeping, to going to the bathroom is under direct control of the spinal column and the nervous system it encases. Yet, not very much medical or media attention is focused on sustaining this all-important area of the human body. As a result of the neglect, abuse and poor focus both the spine and nervous system receive, most people suffer greatly with the results of deterioration in this area at some point in their lives.

Patients and doctors alike are under the misconception that once a spinal condition exists -- including disc and nerve damage -- you need surgery or are forced to live with pain, weakness and organ malfunction for the rest of your life.

However, the truth behind today’s spinal treatments bears that while the spine can easily degenerate, it can also regenerate. Therefore, conditions once believed to be permanent can actually be not only healed, but reversed.

To receive spinal regeneration, you must go to a chiropractor trained in this area of spinal care. Similar to the medical field, chiropractic has also become highly specialized. While the mass majority of chiropractors today are essentially “general practitioners,” certain doctors of chiropractic have higher levels of training in neurology and spinal correction as well as pediatrics, pregnancy and over all health and wellness.

A View From the Inside

A review of published literature indicates that the upright adult spine loses up to 20 mm (slightly more than 3/4 inch) of vertical height each day due to loss of fluid from the disc. The sleep cycle allows the unloaded discs to regain most, but not all, of their fluid and height by the reabsorption of fluid surrounding the discs (Kapandji, 1974).

Since all the fluid and disc height is not regained, the spine becomes shorter starting around age 30. It is common to lose up to 2 inches of stature by age 60 due to the loss of disc fluid. In addition, loss of disc fluid and height compromise spinal form and function with lateral and rotatory postural deviations of the hips and shoulders (Kapandji, 1974).

The discs are comprised of 88 percent water. Proper hydration is essential for nourishment, lubrication and function of all joint cartilages, tendons, ligaments and spinal discs’ nutrition delivery and waste elimination. When the body dehydrates, it pulls water out of the “white tissues” first, meaning the ligaments and tendons of the body (i.e. vertebral discs). If the body continues to dehydrate, the body will pull water next out of the organs, eventually the brain and then you will die.

A loss of only 12 percent of the water out of the disc will reduce the disc height by 50 percent.

Surprisingly, the loss of 1 mm of height in a cervical disc and 1.4 mm loss of height in the lumbar disc will cause the same amount of neurological compression and IVF encroachment equal to an 8-degree rotation. (It takes a 3-degree rotation to cause IVF encroachment and neurological compromise). So you can see that it doesn’t take much water loss in the body to start affecting your discs and the function of your nervous system.

How does the water get lost? Between ages 12-14, the spinal discs’ blood nutrition supply and waste elimination system atrophies. That means the discs will have to receive their necessary water, nutrients and waste elimination from osmosis and imbibation (intersegmental motion of the spinal vertebrae that pump fluids, nutrients and waste in and out of the discs).

This becomes a challenge because, as people get older, they may become more sedentary, develop advancing spinal and postural degenerative conditions and ultimately lose the intersegmental motion of their spine. Once they lose this motion, the discs quickly dehydrate and lose height. This leads to IVF encroachment and chronic pain syndromes that soon advance to visceral and organic conditions leading to disease.

Gaining Water

Chiropractors involved with spinal correction and rehabilitation can detect levels of disc degeneration and correct spinal displacements that are causing IVF encroachment, thus allowing the nervous system to function optimally and keep the body healthy. Until recently, it had been thought, once a disc was degenerated and lost height it could not be restored. It had also been thought that loss of disc height could not be prevented. These assumptions are no longer true.

Can the intervertebral discs rehydrate and regenerate? The discs need three things to regenerate:

  • Motion
  • Water
  • Nutrients

Let’s look at the first two for now.

Research has shown, if we can create loading and unloading cycles in the spine, we can literally “suck” water back into the disc and rehydrate it predictably. So what are loading and unloading cycles? Loading and unloading cycles are consecutive alternating compression and traction movements. Repetitive traction (elongation) followed by compression of the discs produce “imbibation and osmosis” of water into the disc rehydrating or regenerating the disc height.

In addition to disc rehydration, the loading and unloading cycles reduce up to 95 percent of the elastic energy in the spine. The soft tissues have an inherent elastic, rebound energy and reflexes that return the body to its original position after a trauma. This elastic energy must be reduced if we are to achieve spinal correction. The loading and unloading cycles that reduce the elastic energy of the body is called hysteresis.

Hysteresis is essential for spinal correction because the structure of the spine is controlled by the soft tissues, the shape of the discs. The discs are like a hard Jell-O. They have a lot of tensile strength and a lot of rebound, elastic energy.

When a force is applied to the spine to change the structure, the elastic properties will rebound against that force and the hard Jell-O consistency of the disc will continue to maintain the current spinal structure. Hysteresis, repetitive traction and compression cycles liquefy the Jell-O like consistency, reduce the rebound energy by up to 95 percent and decrease muscle spasms to help the doctor achieve an easier adjustment as well as rehydrating the disc.

When the spine is soft, it is easier to mold the spine into a new structure. The newly liquefied disc will require 16-20 minutes to harden like Jell-O again. Once the spine is adjusted and the structure is corrected, the spine can be molded and hardened into its new structure.

The Pettibon System

For this reason, pre-adjustment warm-ups become essential for spinal correction and regeneration. The Pettibon System is a chiropractic system that can do this predictably. Here are some of the benefits of loading and unloading cycles.

  1. The avascular discs ligaments and tendons are nourished and metabolic wastes are eliminated.
  2. The visco-elastic properties of the discs, ligaments and tendons that hold the vertebral units out of their normal position are progressively less resistant to spinal corrective adjusting.
  3. Up to 95 percent of the force needed to adjust or manipulate is reduced by these repetitive cycles.
  4. Rehydrate the disc and increase disc height.
  5. Increase disc and tendon strength.
  6. Decrease the potential for injury or severity of injury from sudden applied forces.
  7. Lubrication for spinal joints and nourishment for their cartilage.
  8. Prevention of adhesions during healing and improved joint integrity of healed joints.
  9. Development for “core” basis for further strength, endurance and agility training.
  10. Rehabilitative exercise is an extremely valuable tool to aid the doctor in the management of both acute and chronic musculoskeletal conditions.

Offshoring the Aquaculture Industry

Proposed federal legislation aims to move enormous fish farms up to 200 miles from the coast -- and, some fear, far away from public oversight.

Fish farming has long been viewed as a way to help fill dinner bowls worldwide while easing the pressure on declining populations of wild ocean fish. Now the U.S. aquaculture industry is poised to shed its coastal cloak to farm deeper waters. Tuesday, the Bush administration sent a bill to Capitol Hill that would open 3.4 million square miles of ocean -- roughly the land area of the lower 48 states -- to fish farms.

The bill would allow the U.S. secretary of Commerce to issue permits for fish farms in federal waters, up to 200 miles offshore.

The proposed legislation represents the latest effort to implement recommendations from the U.S. Commission on Ocean Policy, which last fall sent the White House its blueprint for overhauling the approach the country takes to managing its vast offshore resources. It also represents the start of a process that will give various "stakeholders" -- including the aquaculture industry, environmental groups, state and local officials -- an opportunity to help shape the rules, federal officials say.

"Our goal is to develop a sustainable aquaculture program that balances the needs of fishermen, coastal residents and visitors, seafood consumers, the environment, and the aquaculture industry," said Conrad Lautenbacher Jr., administrator of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), in a prepared statement.

The measure comes at a time of rising global demand for fish as a source of dietary protein, declining fisheries, and rising aquaculture efforts overseas. By 2030, less than half of the fish humans consume will come from wild stocks, according to United Nations estimates. Aquaculture will dominate. Global consumption is expected to reach 110 million metric tons of fish within the next five years.

In the US, "nutritionists are asking us to eat twice as much seafood as we do," says Michael Rubino, manager of NOAA's aquaculture program. "At the moment we import 70 percent of our seafood, and wild fisheries won't be able to meet future market demand. So any increase in supplies is coming from aquaculture. The question is, do we keep importing it, or do we produce some domestically?"

Currently, the U.S. consumes 6 million metric tons of fish a year. By 2025, US consumption is expected to grow by another 2 million metric tons.

"If we could produce that here, that would create 500,000 direct jobs, and 100,000 or more indirect jobs, and contribute about $5 billion in revenue," Dr. Rubino says.

The bill would allow NOAA to issue two permits -- a site permit and an operating permit -- for 10 years. Operators could renew their permits in five-year increments. To receive the permits, fish farmers would have to meet a number of requirements that deal with issues such as environmental monitoring and quality, and business practices. "Those details would be worked out in the regulatory-design process," Rubino says.

And it's designed to push the state of the art in technologies that allow for more environmentally sustainable aquaculture in the open ocean. Indeed, he says, it contains strong language regarding environmental stewardship and public input.

The move to open oceans to fish farming is attractive for several reasons, some analysts say. It moves fish farms away from the coast, where plumes of pollution from urban runoff can endanger the "herd." And it can make siting a farm somewhat easier, since it would draw less opposition from local residents uneasy about the potential for aquaculture pollution -- in the form of waste from the fish -- to foul beaches.

Some environmentalists and marine researchers view open-ocean fish farming with a wary eye. They are concerned that because open-ocean farming is out of sight, it may slowly fall out of mind. Many of the species to be kept down on the aquafarm are top-of-the-food-chain meat eaters, which have the highest market value. But they also are voracious, requiring anywhere from three to 25 pounds of feed -- read smaller fish or fish meal -- for every pound of meat in the farmed species. Concerns also have been growing over the spread of parasites, such as sea lice, from farmed fish to wild schools that pass by, as well as over the results of genetic mixing between wild fish and their escaped farmed cousins.

Sustainable aquaculture is possible if the right species and techniques are used, says William Mott, outgoing president of SeaWeb, a nongovernmental organization that supports sustainable aquaculture. If the motive truly is to meet demand for food, he says, more can be done with fresh-water species grown in urban areas close to their markets, rather than developing large marine feedlots offshore.

Citing unease at what he sees as a bill crafted with input dominated by the aquaculture industry, Mr. Mott adds that it's important to get the measure right. "This legislation will set precedents for generations."
