Steady Rhythm Reduces Epileptic Seizures
June 21, 2006

(Ivanhoe Newswire) -- New research conducted in mice reveals epilepsy may one day respond to treatments aimed at helping the part of the brain known as the septum restore a steady rhythm in another brain area called the hippocampus.

The hippocampus plays a critical role in key functions such as memory, sensory motor integration, and spatial navigation. When electrical activity in the hippocampus gets out of control, an epileptic seizure can be the result.

Researchers from the University of Texas at Brownsville and Texas Southmost College discovered the septum's role in orchestrating this electrical activity by studying anesthetized rats that had been injected with a drug to induce epileptic seizures. Investigators subsequently used electrodes to determine what was happening in their brains when they were having seizures. They found seizures were significantly more likely to occur when the brain fell out of its normal theta rhythm. When theta rhythm, which is influenced by the septum, was restored, epileptic discharges decreased by between 86 percent and 97 percent.

The authors found they could restore normal theta rhythm by either reducing the amount of anesthesia they were giving the rats, stimulating the septum directly by injecting the rats with the drug carbachol or simply by pinching the rats' tails.

The investigators believe their work may one day lead to new drugs for epilepsy, and might even aid in the development of new treatments for Alzheimer's disease, which carries about a 10 percent to 22 percent increased risk for seizures.

They write, "The understanding of this effect at the cellular and molecular levels may result in new therapeutic approaches dedicated to reduce hippocampal hyperexcitability and thus improve the quality of life of epileptic patients."

How Drug-Sponsored Trials Influence Docs

(Ivanhoe Newswire) -- Physicians who participated in pharmaceutical-sponsored clinical trials involving asthma medications maintained adherence to treatment guidelines but were more likely prescribe the sponsor's drugs, according to a new study.

Morten Andersen, M.D., Ph.D., and colleagues from Denmark investigated the effects of physicians participating in company-sponsored clinical trials aimed at improving patients' use of asthma medicine. The researchers found the prevalence of inhaled steroid use in asthma patients increased from 68.5 percent to 72.9 percent. The study also revealed participants in the trail did not impact the physicians' adherence to international treatment guidelines.

Researchers say pharmaceutical companies are often involved in clinical trials in general practice, and this may trigger an increase in the use of the sponsoring companies' products because physicians become familiar with them. The researchers suggest this effect may be further strengthened by close physician-company cooperation, which they say may create physician loyalty toward the company.

"Our study confirms the hypothesis that physician involvement in clinical trials is a powerful tool for influencing company-specific drug preferences. Several mechanisms may be responsible, including setting up a gift relationship by payment to a trial conducting physician." The authors conclude, "If we had access to information on the cost of the trial, it would have been possible to evaluate if these trial costs were counterbalanced by revenue from the trial sponsors increased market share."

LENA'S COMMENT: This is most definitely true as I watched it with the doctors I worked with when we were involved in clinical studies. Just because those drugs were tried did not make them safe or effective, that too I saw while tracking results in patients!

Divided Supreme Court Upholds Federal Protections for Wetlands

WASHINGTON ? A divided Supreme Court on Monday upheld the broad power of federal environmental regulators to protect most wetlands from development, even in areas that are dry much of the year.

The decision split the justices three ways and left uncertainty about the reach of the Clean Water Act. But it was a setback for private property advocates who hoped the more conservative court would sharply cut back protections for wetlands.

The case was the first environmental dispute before the court since John G. Roberts Jr. became chief justice, and it highlighted the conservative-liberal divide.

Taking a middle position, Justice Anthony M. Kennedy wrote the pivotal opinion, which appears to provide continued federal control over most wetlands.

At stake were an estimated 300 million acres of sometimes-swampy ground that includes half of Alaska and an area as large as California in the lower 48 states. Since the 1970s, the Army Corps of Engineers has said the owners of this land may not fill or drain it without a permit.
