Tobacco is a mood-altering, addictive drug
that kills 500,000 Americans a year (200 million worldwide)
Costs $400 billion each year, according to "Smoking and Health
Review," (1992).
The American Lung Association says tobacco contains more than 4,000
chemicals, 60 of which causes cancer.
Some of the 'killers' are radioactivity, arsenic, ammonia, lead,
formaldehyde, nitrogen dioxide, cadmium, phenol, benzene and hydrogen
cyanide (the 'gas chamber' gas that poisons the respiratory enzymes)

Study: Quitting Smoking Adds Years to Life
By JANE WARDELL
LONDON (AP) - At least half, and perhaps as many as two-thirds, of
people who begin smoking in their youth are eventually killed by the
habit, according to a mammoth 50-year medical study by British
researchers released Tuesday.
The report in the British Medical Journal is the second part of a study
that began in 1951. The publication's first report on the study in June
1954 was considered a landmark, confirming the link between smoking and
lung cancer.
The second part of the study tracked the same participants for the past
50 years and highlights the findings that kicking the habit can add
years to the lives of former smokers.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY!
=======================
According to a New England Journal of Medicine
report, 1500 patients a year in the U.S. leave the operating
table with some of the hospital's equipment still INSIDE
THEM. What are the most common hiding places for wayward
clamps, sponges, electrodes, retractors and various and
sundry other instruments? The chest, abdomen, hips, and body
cavities like the vagina.
This kind of thing happens a lot more often to
patients who are overweight!
Even though it only happen about 1 in 20,000, they'd
be even more of a scarcity if all the unnecessary surgeries
Americans undergo each year were eliminated.
That - and apparently losing weight - will keep
us out of harm's way as much as possible.

Cholesterol Drugs Life-threatening Risks
The "Mayo Clinic Health Letter? 9/24/98 stated; "Once
you start, you must typically stay on the drug for the rest of your
life, spending up to $200 a month.
However, this is a minor concern compared to the common side effects of
cholesterol reducing drugs, which can include abdominal and muscle pain,
nausea, fatigue and diarrhea. In fact, findings from a recent study, the
American Medical Association, reveal that 52% of 7,287 people taking
anticholesterol drugs do not refill their prescriptions ? even though
their insurance companies fully cover the cost (Beil 1998). Worse
yet, all three types of cholesterol lowering medications are associated
with an increased risk of severe liver damage, requiring that the liver
be checked regularly.?
2002 found the pharmaceutical Industry deciding that the cholesterol
level to ascribe to should be below 160, down from 200, making them
billions of dollars in sales of cholesterol lowering drugs.
Fortunately, there is an alternative approach to normalizing the
cholesterol that has been around for thousands of years. Taking Chinese
Red yeast along with CoQ10 to avoid any negative effects on the liver.
The first U.S. study was completed in 1999 At UCLA by Dr. Heber who
tested Chinese Red Yeast against a placebo. "The stuff really works!"
stated David Kritchevsky, PhD, cholesterol expert at the Wistar
Institute and University of Pennsylvania. Dr. Kritrchevsky noted that
Chinese red yeast balanced cholesterol an average of 25 - 40 point in 20
studies conducted in China. Among the 83 people who took Chinese red
yeast for three months showed a vast improvement with a 16% reduction in
overall cholesterol, while those who took a placebo demonstrated no
significant changes (Liebman 1999) A real breakthrough in
medicine and Natural treatments.
Of course this will take at least 20 years to hit the traditional
medical community, if it ever does. The pharmaceutical industry cannot
make money off natural meds. Therefore the next statements we hear may
very well be negative regarding these studies, that is the traditional
way of handling natural medications versus chemical? But as long as you
have the information you can use it for your own protection.
Red yeast is also though to be responsible, in part, for the profoundly
low incidence of heart problems among the Chinese.

TODAY'S HEALTH TIP
~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~
PRESCRIPTION WARNING!
Health Canada Is advising Canadians about a possible association
between Crestor? and rhabdomyolysis
OTTAWA -Health Canada is advising Canadians about a possible association
between the cholesterol lowering drug Crestor®,
and a serious condition called rhabdomyolysis.
Rhabdomyolysis is a condition that results in muscle breakdown and the
release of muscle cell contents into the bloodstream. Symptoms of
rhabdomyolysis include muscle pain, weakness, tenderness, fever, dark
urine, nausea, and vomiting. In severe cases, rhabdomyolysis can result
in kidney failure and can be life-threatening.
Rhabdomyolysis has also been reported with other cholesterol lowering
drugs in the "statin" family. "Statins" are a specific type of
cholesterol lowering medication. Between February 2003 and June 2004
there have been eight cases of rhabdomyolysis reported in Canadian
patients taking Crestor®. In five of
those cases the patients were taking the maximum recommended dose (40
mg) of the drug, in two cases the patients were taking the lowest
recommended starting dosage (10 mg) and in the remaining case, the
dosage was not stated. All of the Canadian reported cases were
associated with predisposing risk factors, and no deaths have been
reported.
There are certain factors that might cause an individual to have a
greater risk of developing muscle related problems, including
rhabdomyolysis, if they are taking a statin. These factors include:
kidney problems, an underactive thyroid gland, alcohol abuse, a past
history of significant muscle pain or significant muscle weakness while
on statin therapy, a personal or family history of inherited muscle
problems, and Japanese or Chinese ethnicity. The risk is also increased
for patients who may be taking other medications which might interact
with statins. Health Canada recommends that all patients taking Crestor®
consult with their doctors to determine if any of these factors apply to
them.
Because the risk of rhabdomyolysis is increased at higher doses, Health
Canada recommends that all patients taking Crestor®,
or any cholesterol lowering drug, should be on the lowest dose that will
meet their treatment goal.
All patients taking Crestor®, or any
cholesterol lowering drug, are advised to report any unexplained muscle
pain, muscle weakness or cramps, or any brown or discoloured urine, to
their physician immediately.
This advisory is in addition to a letter issued by the manufacturers of
Crestor®, following consultation
with Health Canada, to health care professionals reminding them of the
above mentioned safety concerns.
If you have questions regarding your current prescription, please
contact your physician or pharmacist. Any suspected adverse drug
reactions in patients receiving Crestor®
can be reported to:

FOOD OF THE
WEEK
~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^
The Mostly Small Vegetable! Radish
Radishes have often been considered more as decoration and garnish than
a food, except by those who grow them. Radishes are actually members of
the cruciferous (cabbage, etc.) vegetable family and all parts are
edible, including the greens. Because they vary in quality, radishes are
usually classified as winter or summer plant. Small ones of bold red,
pink, purple, white or red and white are usually considered summer
radish by some. They may be globe-shaped or elongated, can be fiery hot
or tastefully mild.
Most common varieties here in the U.S. are usually round, but can also
be ovoid, cylindrical, or turnip-like in shape. They can be the familiar
red or white, red and white mix, pink, purple, and black; but the flesh
is almost always white. However, there are some stunning varieties that
have produced such dramatically colored flesh as black and white stripes
or red, green, purple, or fuchsia. Mustard oils are responsible for the
tangy taste of radishes.
The most popular, in my part of the world anyway, are red globe radish
or Daikon, a general term for a group of long white radishes. So this
information is mostly about those two radishes...
The Red Globe is low in calories and an abundance of flavor and crunch.
Daikon radishes are similar in nutrients to the Red Globe.
A good source of Vitamin A, Thiamin, Riboflavin, Pantothenic Acid,
Calcium, Iron and Copper, and a very good source of Vitamin C (ounce for
ounce about 42% as much as an orange), Niacin, Vitamin B6, Folate,
Magnesium and Phosphorus.
Radishes are known to relieve indigestion and flatulence, as well as
being a good expectorant. Like other cruciferous vegetables, radishes
contain sulphurous compounds that have anti-cancer properties. They also
contain salicyclates, compounds similar to aspirin and, therefore,
should be avoided by those with aspirin sensitivities.
The pre-bagged radishes have a longer refrigerator life than those sold
with their greens still attached as the greenery leeches nutrients from
the bulb.
Daikon radishes are said to aid the digestive system, especially in the
digestion of fatty foods. It is a common ingredient in Japanese cooking
and is always grated and added to tempura dipping sauce. Young daikons
can be eaten raw but the larger (more than 8 inches long) ones must be
cooked. Always peel daikons. Cut up and simmered in stews and soups,
daikon tastes light and refreshing rather than heavy or starchy. Daikons
are often cut into paper-thin slices by talented Japanese chefs.
Daikon greens are delicious too. They can be washed, stacked, rolled as
a scroll, and cut crosswise. This produces thin julienne strips which
are traditionally salted and left standing for an hour. The moisture is
squeezed out. The leaves are then chopped and stored in glass jars for
up to a week in the refrigerator. The Japanese stir them into warm rice,
they can also be added to soups and other recipes.
Some other varieties of Radishes include:
Beauty Heart; is often sold as a red daikon, and has a striking
fuchsia flesh, but can also be green or purple with crimson striping. It
is grown mainly in China and treated more as a fruit like an Asian pear. Blanche Transparent; (Transparent White) is a long, small, white
radish and important only in the region where it is grown. It is similar
to the winter radish in appearance and taste. Cherry Belle; is round with crisp, white, mild flesh and can be
harvested three weeks after planting. China Rose; is bright red, with white flesh and a good flavor. D'Avignon; is rose-colored with a white tip, crunchy, and
extremely hot. 18 Day; is a fast-growing French breakfast type. French Breakfast; is an elongated radish that sports red
shoulders and a white tip. It is milder than the red globe, but just as
crisp. If left too long, it becomes hot and woody. Long Black Spanish; is dark skinned and extremely hot. Round
Black Spanish is similar, but globe-shaped. Muchen Bier; is a tasty green which can be eaten raw or stir
fried. Palatinate Giant Radish; is one of the largest varieties, but no
different in taste from its smaller relatives. Scarlet Globe; is a popular mild variety. Short Top Forcing; is bright red and excellent for winter sowing
under cover. California Mammoth White; is larger than the White Icicles,
oblong in shape, with an average length of eight inches and a slightly
pungent flavor. Chinese Misato Rose; is a round Asian radish about four inches in
diameter. Cream and green colored on the outside, it has a beautiful
rosy-pink interior. Easter Egg; comes in pastel shades.
Newt Gingrich Pushing 'Wired' Hospitals
By BROOKE DONALD
PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - Medical care would be improved and
millions of dollars would be saved if hospitals were fully
wired, said Rep. Patrick Kennedy and former House Speaker Newt
Gingrich, who jointly announced a program to bring American
medicine into the Internet age.
On Monday, the political partisans put their party differences
aside to tout electronic prescriptions, online patient records
and an integrated, paperless health-care system.
Gingrich said 98,000 people die annually in hospitals due to
medical errors. He suggested information technology could save
billions of dollars now wasted on procedures, such as
unnecessary tests and redundant record keeping.
"We allow people to die in health in a way we would never
tolerate in any other part of society," said Gingrich, a
Republican who served as speaker from 1995 until the end of
1998, when he gave up his seat after the GOP's poor showing in
the November elections.
Kennedy and Gingrich made their remarks at Brown University,
where they were taking part in a daylong conference about using
technology to improve health care.
Kennedy, D-R.I., plans to introduce legislation that would
implement a paperless health-care system by 2015. The bill seeks
$5 billion in funding to build the infrastructure to get all
hospitals and patients online.
The pair said better technology would lower health-care costs in
the long run, "and the system ends up paying for itself,"
Gingrich said.
Gingrich and Kennedy said the Internet helps patients access
records more easily and allows doctors to monitor their
patients' care more efficiently.
For example, electronic prescriptions, Kennedy said, reduces
errors, and can prevent adverse drug reactions by alerting
pharmacists and doctors to other medications a patient is using.
Gingrich and Kennedy said failures in the health-care system are
due, in large part, to the fragmentation of American health
care. The system is a patchwork of systems, each having
standards, regulations and financial structures that vary widely
from state to state and company to company.
Kennedy said having everyone on the same system will make it
more transparent and easier to share information. He estimated
it would take about three years for individual patient records
to get online, if his bill is passed.
"The fact is, paper records kill," said Gingrich, who is widely
credited with leading Republicans to their first majority in 40
years in 1994. "And the tragic thing is the deaths are
avoidable."
LENA'S NOTE: Yes, this would eliminate a few problems, but
medicine induced deaths will always happen as long as the
pharmaceutical companies are manufacturing, distributing and
controlling medicine. It's not the hospital that's killing
people but the medications and treatments that are administered
in the hospital. Yes, it will save a lot of money for the
insurance companies as people will find it harder to hop from
one ER to another getting drug prescriptions or going from
doctor to doctor to feed that drug habit. We could very well see
a rise in street deaths from illicit drugs manufactured by
street czars. Time will tell if this comes to be, and I believe
it will...
Toxic Pollution Rose 5 Percent in 2002
By JOHN HEILPRIN
WASHINGTON (AP) - Toxic chemical releases into the environment rose 5
percent in 2002, marking only the second such increase reported by the
Environmental Protection Agency in nearly two decades, and the first
since 1997.
Some 4.79 billion pounds were released in 2002, the latest for which
figures are available, not including releases from metal mining, the EPA
reports. The agency stopped including that data because of a recent
court decision in an industry challenge.
The increase reversed a recent trend, and was a big turnaround from last
year's report by EPA that chemical releases in 2001 had declined 13
percent from a year earlier.
Kimberly Terese Nelson, the EPA's chief information officer, blamed the
"extraordinarily large change" on the 1999 shutdown of BHP Copper Co.'s
San Manuel plant in Tucson, Ariz., where 2,000 people worked.
Dismantling a plant turns components and product into waste.
"If we were take that one facility out we would see a 3 percent
decrease," Nelson said Tuesday of the releases of 650 chemicals by
24,379 facilities that EPA tracks. Last year, 25,388 facilities reported
their findings.
EPA spokeswoman Cynthia Bergman said EPA's annual Toxics Release
Inventory begun under a 1986 law wasn't meant to be all-inclusive of all
types of emissions and chemicals. She called it "one of just several
tools" for informing the public on that pollution.
EPA figures show 1997 was the only other year with an increase, 6
percent, in the several billion pounds of pollution allowed yearly into
the air, water and ground in the United States.
Even so, a study by two environmental groups said EPA was under
reporting the air pollution portion of releases of chemicals and
emissions by 330 million pounds a year. They cast the inventory as
particularly soft on refineries and chemical plants, keeping as much as
16 percent of the nation's air pollution "off the books."
"It's time that the EPA and the states deal with the problem of
inaccurate and flawed reporting of toxic releases," said Kelly Haragan
of the Rockefeller Family Fund's Environmental Integrity Project, which
joined with Texas-based Galveston-Houston Association for Smog
Prevention in doing the study.
The National Petrochemical and Refiners Association, however, described
the groups' conclusions as misleading, because other EPA data shows some
decreases in nationwide air toxics emissions. It said the refining
industry helped lower pollution through improved technology and
management and cleaner gasolines.
"Ironically, if environmentalists intend to push for an even greater
regulatory burden on refineries, they may complicate the smooth
introduction of newer, cleaner fuels," the trade group said.
EPA reported a 10 percent increase in releases of mercury - which Nelson
blamed on a single gold mine - and a 3.2 percent increase in releases of
lead. It is the second year in a row that the EPA is requiring
facilities to tell state and federal authorities about lead releases of
more than 100 pounds. Previously, only much larger releases were
reported.
Releases of dioxin, a chemical worrisome in even small amounts,
decreased by 5 percent from the previous year.
Sen. Jim Jeffords, I-Vt., a senior member of the Senate Environment and
Public Works Committee, said the 2002 increase "proves that the policies
of the Bush administration have moved us backward, not forward, on the
environment."
The biggest polluters in recent years have been hard-rock mining
companies and coal-burning power plants, and 2002 was no exception,
according to the EPA.
Last year, Nelson told Congress the EPA and the White House Office of
Management and Budget wanted to make reporting easier, faster and less
burdensome for companies.
