Something To Think About

Alternative Medicine Taking Hold in Traditional
Medical Schools
Alternative treatments are bounding their way to the
medical forefront: According to a 2002 government survey of 31,000
people, more than one-third of American adults have tried alternative
therapies such as:
Yoga, Herbs, Meditation, Acupuncture
In fact, interest in alternative therapies are becoming
so prevalent that the University of Pennsylvania is collaborating with
Tai Sophia Institute -- an alternative medical school in Washington D.C.
-- to create a curriculum focused on teaching medical students about the
wide range of natural treatment options available.
Tai Sophia will offer a master's degree program in complementary and
alternative medicine starting in August; both schools will share faculty
members and students.
What's the overall goal? That Penn medical school
graduates will be able to communicate effectively with patients about
how to guide alternative treatments into their overall care, said the
co-founder of Tai Sophia.
Penn isn't the only university jumping on the bandwagon; universities
nationwide are increasingly focusing on complementary and alternative
medicine. According to the Association of American Medical Colleges,
more than 95 of America's 125 medical schools require some kind of
complementary and alternative medicine coursework.
In addition, Penn and Tai Sophia have a few more plans up their sleeves:
They are also developing postgraduate and continuing
education courses on complementary and alternative medicine.
Cardiologists at Penn's Presbyterian Medical Center are
working with Tai Sophia to incorporate alternative therapies into
traditional care for heart problems.

LENA'S COMMENT: This is great news on one hand but
not so great on the other. Medical schools are funded and run by the
drug industry and therefore how accurate can their alternative schooling
be? Adulterate comes to mind for me...

How Safe Is Traditional Medicine?
* Dangerous
misdiagnoses: one in five patients is completely misdiagnosed by
his/her doctor.
* Laboratory errors: doctor-operated labs have double the error rate
of independent labs.
* Improper prescriptions: 20% of all prescriptions you get in
hospitals could be just plain wrong.
* Toxic side effects of prescriptions: Three out of four doctors
fail to tell patients about side effects that can be life threatening!

Lupus Symptoms or Not?
The May 2005 issue of Arthritis and Rheumatism
reports on a Canadian study in which researchers followed the medical
records for nearly 10,000 lupus patients for eight years. During that
period more than 400 cases of cancer were diagnosed. When the rates of
cancer in the general population were compared to the test group,
researchers concluded that lupus patients may have as much as four times
the risk of developing non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, and a sharply increased
risk of lung cancer as well as liver-related and blood-related cancers.
The authors of the study suggest that doctors of patients who have lupus
should be on the lookout for swollen lymph nodes or sudden weight loss
and should not dismiss these symptoms as simply lupus-related.
Lupus is conventionally treated with immune system suppressants, malaria
medications and corticosteroids. In some cases these treatments decrease
inflammation and address specific symptoms of lupus, but the side
effects of the drugs can sometimes do more to complicate the condition
rather than relieve it.
For many lupus patients there may be a safer way.
Omega-3 fish oils and supplements of copper have been shown to
successfully address lupus symptoms in animal studies. And previous
human studies have shown that lupus patients tend to have lower omega-3
levels compared to healthy people.

Yellow Sticks
(Daucus carota,)
Make The Eyes, Skin & More Healthier!
Easy to pack and perfect with that favorite dip, the crunchy texture and
sweet taste of carrots is popular among both adults and children.
Shipped around the country from California throughout the year.
The carrot has a thick, fleshy, deeply colored root, which grows
underground, and feathery green leaves that emerge above ground. It is
known scientifically as Daucus carota, a name that can be traced back to
ancient Roman writings of the 3rd century. Carrots belong to the
Umbelliferae family along with parsnips, fennel caraway, cumin and dill
which all have the umbrella-like flower clusters that characterize this
family of plants.
The carrot is an herbaceous plant containing about 87% water. The power
and goodness of carrots have many important vitamins and minerals. They
are rich in antioxidants Beta Carotene, Alpha Carotene, Phytochemicals
and Glutathione, Calcium and Potassium, and vitamins A, B1, B2, C, and
E, which are also considered antioxidants, protecting as well as
nourishing the skin. They contain a form of calcium easily absorbed by
the body. Finally they also contain Copper, Iron, Magnesium, Manganese,
Phosphorous and Sulphur, a real wonder drug!!
Also contain, in small amounts, essential oils, carbohydrates and
nitrogenous composites. They are well-known for their sweetening,
antianemic, healing, diuretic, remineralizing and sedative properties.
In order to assimilate the greatest quantity of the nutrients present in
carrots, it is important to chew them well.
Carrots are nutritional heroes; they store a goldmine of nutrients. No
other vegetable or fruit contains as much carotene as carrots, which the
body converts to vitamin A. This is a truly versatile vegetable and
contains an extraordinary pectin fiber that has been found to have
cholesterol-lowering properties.
Clearly a raw carrot has more goodness in it when it is raw and
therefore you would assume it is the healthiest way to eat it. But
unless the carrot is juiced or chewed extremely well when then consumed,
the body does not easily break down the goodness because of the cellular
nature of the carrot.
So in reality, unlike most other vegetables (not all), carrots are more
nutritious when eaten cooked than eaten raw (except when juiced raw).
Because raw carrots have tough cellular walls, the body is able to
convert less than 25 per cent of their beta carotene into vitamin A.
Cooking, however, partially dissolves cellulose-thickened cell walls,
freeing up nutrients by breaking down the cell membranes. So long as the
cooked carrots are served as part of a meal that provides some fat the
body can absorb more than half of the carotene. Carrots are usually cut
into pieces and eaten after boiling or steaming, but done in this way,
half the proteins and soluble carbohydrates will be lost, so it is more
advisable to cook them whole and then cut up.
Experiments show that eating lightly-cooked carrots is much more
beneficial than eating raw carrots, which confirms the ancient wisdom in
traditional Chinese medicine. Traditional Chinese medicine practitioners
have always recommended that their patients eat lightly-cooked carrots
in order to get the best nutritional absorption. Recent research by Dr.
Xiangdong Wang at Tufts University shows that beta carotene can change
in the human body into a substance called retinoic acid, which is widely
used to treat cancers.
Often overlooked, but found in carrots, is alpha carotene. According to
an article in NCI Cancer Weekly (Nov. 13, 1989), Michiaki Murakoshi, who
leads a team of biochemists at Japan's Kyoto Prefectural University of
Medicine, contends that alpha carotene may be more powerful than beta
carotene in inhibiting processes that may lead to tumor growth.
Murakoshi indicates that neuroblastoma (cancer) cells coated with
carotenoids experience a drop in N-myc activity compared to untreated
cells. N-myc is a gene that codes for cell growth-stimulating proteins
and can contribute to cancer formation and growth. Alpha carotene was
found to be about ten times more inhibitory toward N-myc activity than
beta carotene. Murakoshi concludes that all types of carotenoids should
be studied for possible health benefits.
Carrots benefit our bodies by:
*Boosting immunity (especially among older people).
*Reducing photosensitivity (beta-carotene protects the skin from sun
damage).
*Improving symptoms of HIV.
*Easing alcohol withdrawal symptoms.
*Helping to heal minor wounds and injuries.
*Reducing the risk of heart disease.
*Reducing the risk of high blood pressure.
*Cleansing the liver, and when consumed regularly, can help the liver
excrete fats and bile.
*Fighting bronchitis.
*Fighting infection (vitamin A keeps cell membranes healthy, making them
stronger against disease-causing microorganisms)
*Improving muscle, flesh, and skin health.
*Helping fight anemia.
*Reducing acne.
*Improving eye health.
Have you ever seen a purple, white, yellow, or red carrot? Most people
haven't, even though such carrots have existed for hundreds of years.
You may see them in the future. Recent research at the University of
Wisconsin-Madison suggests that pigments in these colorful carrots,
which taste just like regular carrots, may help prevent heart disease
and cancer, and reduce cholesterol. Studies examining the health
benefits of fruits and vegetables are revealing the disease-preventive
powers of the pigments that give plants their distinctive colors.

Orange carrots get their color from beta carotene, a pigment the body
converts to vitamin A. Vitamin A deficiency, although rare in the United
States, poses a major public health problem in developing countries
second only to protein malnutrition.
According to the World Health Organization, vitamin A deficiency
partially or totally blinds nearly 350,000 children from more than 75
countries every year. Roughly 60 percent of these children die within
months of going blind. However, vitamin A deficiency is preventable.
Healthful juice of our family's choice
12 large carrots
2 large apples (I usually use Fuju Apples but any sweet will do)
½" piece of ginger root.
Wash carrots, ginger root and apples well before juicing!
Juice carrots and ginger root together then the apples.
Tasty refreshing and healthy!
Eat Carrots as often as possible!

Getting it right for the majority is important, which is what
the YMCA's are doing for out-of-shape people, who are
intimidated by the gym or health club...
YMCAs Offer Customized Workout Program
Jun 26, 2005
By DANIEL YEE
ALPHARETTA , Ga. (AP) - When Kelley Belkeir joined a gym a year
ago, she went once and never returned. It was too intimidating
for the out-of-shape 44-year-old. All around her were
uncomfortable stares from sleek, toned hard-bodies. She felt no
one at the gym would help her.
Months later, she tried again - this time at her local YMCA,
taking advantage of its customized Coach Approach program.
Offered at only 14 YMCAs around the country, the program seeks
to keep exercise novices from dropping out by providing a
scientifically-based regimen that matches the difficulty of
workouts with a participant's tolerance.
The approach has worked for Belkeir. By sticking to her workout
routine, the stay-at-home mom has dropped a pants size, avoided
cholesterol medicine, and now can keep up with her 3-year-old
son, Phillip, without losing her breath.
"It's important to me that I just feel better. You carry
yourself better when you exercise," said Belkeir, who had
stopped routinely exercising when she was pregnant with Phillip.
Coach Approach was created three years ago in Atlanta by Jim
Annesi, a former tennis pro, because so many people quit
traditional fitness programs not long after they join. Up to 65
percent of new gym members drop out in the first six months,
according to the most recent data, a U.S. study published in
2003 in the European Journal of Sports Science.
Annesi began working on this problem a decade ago as an exercise
science and sports studies researcher at Rutgers University in
New Jersey. Fitness club owners came to him, puzzled by all the
people who join and then quit merely after a few weeks.
To stay in business, gym owners were forced to repeat a tired
cycle of continually replacing dropouts with new enrollees.
"Dropouts continued to be cited as the number one concern for
wellness facility managers year after year," said Annesi, now
director of wellness advancement for the Metro Atlanta YMCA.
The problem, he said, is that most fitness clubs focus on what
works best for the 20 percent of club members who need no
prodding. That means pushing many exercise sets and repetitions.
"It was an emphasis on getting quick physiological results and
basically leaving people to their own resources," Annesi said.
"With Coach Approach, we're trying to first build the exercise
habit, then looking to physiological change that could last for
a lifetime."
But too much exercise too quickly easily wears novices out,
quickly discourages them and makes exercise a dreaded task
instead of the enjoyable pursuit it should be, Annesi said.
Coach Approach is designed to satisfy novice exercisers so they
stick with it beyond six months. YMCA officials say the
program's dropout rate is half that of traditional programs -
with only about 30 percent quitting within six months.
"It helps to have people engaged," said Madelyn Fernstrom,
director of the Weight Management Center at the University of
Pittsburgh Medical Center, who is not affiliated with the YMCA
program. "If it was so easy, people would be thin and fit and
running to the gym. Short of that, people say, 'I like a little
reinforcement. It's nice that people are interested in my
progress.'"
YMCA has been expanding the program to about three cities a
year, and Los Angeles, Indianapolis, Philadelphia and Washington
are among those that now offer it.
Under the program, YMCA officials assess a new member's
tolerance of exercise pain, self-management ability and the
support the person has to help him continue.
Then they set exercise goals that are regularly are tweaked
based on levels of fatigue, stress and exhaustion afterward.
The trick, Annesi says, is to provide a level that challenges
but doesn't discourage someone from continuing.
"What we're really trying to do initially is build a sense of
competence and you want to pair exercise with pleasant
after-exercise feelings," Annesi said.
Electronic displays on treadmills and other machines keep track
of a participant's goal and serve as reminders of how much to
shoot for that session. Members get friendly e-mails celebrating
accomplished goals or reminders if they've missed workouts a few
times in a row.
The YMCA helped Belkeir figure out the best time to exercise:
The mother of two used to arrive in the evenings, but found it
too stressful when she had other worries, such as what to plan
for the dinner. Now she exercises three mornings a week.
And she's carried her fitness routines home, where she has small
weights and regularly uses the family treadmill, which once
served as a glorified clothes rack. "I even exercise on
vacation," she says.
The fitness habit has extended to Belkeir's 15-year-old
daughter, Chelsea, who has started exercising at the YMCA and at
home.
More important, the Alpharetta, Ga., mom she feels better.
"If I come in sluggish and not jazzed, I find my energy level
has increased immediately" after a workout, she says, as she
sets the controls to a YMCA treadmill and putting the earbuds of
her iPod in place. "I'm not Superwoman on a treadmill - I just
want to get my heart rate elevated. That is what is most
important."

The Race to Alaska Before It Melts
By TIMOTHY EGAN
Published: June 26, 2005
THEY stood and gawked at the great blue mass of shrinking ice. Behold: a
frozen landscape giving it up to a midnight sunset. The scene at the
receding edge of the Exit Glacier in Kenai Fjords National Park in
Alaska was part festive gathering, part nature tour with an apocalyptic
edge. Dressed in tank tops and shorts - beachwear, in fact - on this
freakishly warm day in early June, people moved ever closer to the rope
line near the glacier as it shied away, practically groaning and melting
before their eyes.
A product of the late ice age, the glacier looked old and tired on this
hot day. There was a sense of loss, some people said, at watching this
giant recoil. There were oohs and aahs but also more hushed tones,
expressions of fear that the big land was somehow diminished, a little
less wild. Just a few years ago, the spot where these tourists stood, on
dry ground marked by Park Service signs, had been under ice.
Alaska is changing by the hour. From the far north, where higher seas
are swamping native villages, to the tundra around Fairbanks, where
melting permafrost is forcing some roads and structures to buckle in
what looks like a cartoon version of a hangover, to the rivers of ice
receding from inlets, warmer temperatures are remaking the Last Frontier
State.
That transformation was particularly apparent at the visitor center
here, where rangers were putting the finishing touches on a display that
sought to explain the changing landscape of the country's northernmost
state. The sign said, "Glimpses of an Ice Age past. Laboratory of
climate change today," and it explained how the Exit Glacier has been
shrinking over the years, and what scientists are learning as the state
heats up.
Out in the fjords, kayakers paddled into bays newly opened by other
receding glaciers. They came to see the ice, a tour guide explained, to
paddle around something that had been moving toward a tidewater destiny
for thousands of years. And many of them were in a hurry. Glacial pace,
in Alaska, no longer means slow.
"Things are melting pretty fast around here," said Jim Ireland, the
chief ranger for Kenai Fjords. Climate change, he said, "has become one
of the major new themes for this park."
In ambition, in the scale of its scenic extremes, in the pure size and
wonder of its fish and wildlife, Alaska has never been anything less
than flamboyant. It is, after all, more than two times the size of
Texas, with a shoreline, more than 33,000 miles, that exceeds that of
all other states combined. And as Alaska morphs through a period of
warmer weather, it is doing so with characteristic extravagance.
The old Alaska, the Alaska of forbidden expanses and adrenaline-surging
encounters with brawnier ends of the food chain, still exists of course.
But a larger drama - of this land losing some of its icy inheritance -
is playing out as well.
The sea-level edge of the Exit Glacier, just outside the town of Seward
and one of the most visited bodies of ice in the north, has receded by
nearly 1,000 feet over the last 10 years, park rangers say. In Prince
William Sound and farther south in Glacier Bay National Park, where the
cruise ship industry does a thriving business based on active walls of
ice, many glaciers have pulled their toes out of the water and shriveled
up the valleys. This process has created another attraction: the instant
landscape. Take away the ice, add rain and sunshine to the debris left
behind and, presto, Stage 1 of creation.
To some visitors who fear that global warming is to blame for the
accelerated pace of change, there is a sense of urgency in their travel
planning. They seem to be fearful that if they don't get to Alaska soon,
they will never see the full glory of the state's frozen magnificence.
"One of the things we hear a lot from people is that they want to see
Alaska before it's gone," said Hugh Rose, a tour guide, geologist and
photographer who lives in Fairbanks. "The melting, the warmer
temperatures, the changing patterns of wildlife and the land - they've
become huge topics of conversation among guides and our clients."
TIMOTHY EGAN reports for The New York Times
from Seattle.
