Statin drugs cause mental "static"
I know I've mentioned cholesterol drugs a lot, both in my
newsletter and in the Daily Dose. But new research findings
keep cropping up almost daily, it seems, that tell us new
things about these harmful patent medications - and
their "benefits."
For instance, research unveiled at last fall's meeting of
the American Heart Association revealed that a commonly
prescribed "statin" drug for lowering cholesterol might
actually impair patients' brain function - even so far as to
affect their ability to perform everyday tasks, like drive a
car. The study pinpointed measurable decreases in attention
span and psychomotor reflex speed among the subject group
when compared to the un-medicated control group.
But here's the really incriminating part: Those patients who
experienced the greatest decreases in blood cholesterol also
suffered the greatest levels of impairment! Interesting,
huh?
I mention these findings to you because I know the
mainstream press will never pick up the story - but also
because some medical authorities estimate that in the very
near future, half of the adult U.S. population could be
taking cholesterol-lowering medications. That's right - if
conventional doctors and the "drug thugs" have their way,
every other one of us will be stumbling around in a statin
stupor! But what's not clear is whether the impairment is
caused by the drugs themselves - or the lack of cholesterol.
I suspect it's the latter. Why? Because low cholesterol
levels have been linked to numerous other health issues
directly related to the brain - things like violent
behavior, depression, mood swings, stroke risk and other
problems. Maybe now, we should add "impaired brain
functioning" to that list.
I've said it before, and I'll say it again now: Unless your
cholesterol climbs over 300, forget about it - even
the "ratio" of LDL to HDL that so many conventional doctors
make such a fuss about. For heart health, concentrate
instead on DHEA, testosterone (for both men and women), and
homocysteine levels. And be sure to supplement with plenty
of folic acid, B vitamins, and CoQ10, too.
Just leave the statin drugs alone - unless you're suffering
from an excess of IQ or terminal euphoria.

Poisons Under Your Sink: Hidden Dangers of Cleaning
Products

The American Association of Poison Control Centers (AAPCC) has recorded
many exposures to household cleaning substances that were serious enough
to require treatment in a health care facility. Incredibly, according to
the AAPCC the largest number of occurrences of poisoning in 1993 were
due to cleaning products - drain cleaners, toilet bowl cleaners, bleach,
soaps and detergents.
One Million poisonings in Canada each year are due to household cleaner
ingestion. Some are fatal. Thousands of children and adults are
permanently disfigured or injured through contact with chemicals in the
home each year.
Our pets are also at risk. Animals that don't have access to clean,
fresh water are more likely to drink out of puddles, gutters, toilet
bowls, or any old container left sitting around with a liquid in it.
Even though my cats always have access to clean water in a bowl, they
seem to prefer the toilet, the sink, the bathtub, or even a basin with
cleaning solution in it.
Here is an alphabetical list of some of the most hazardous cleansers
found around the house:
AIR FRESHENERS: interfere with your ability to smell by releasing
nerve-deadening agents or coating nasal passages with an oil film,
usually methoxychlor, a pesticide that accumulates in fat cells. Known
toxic chemicals found in an air freshener are formaldehyde, a highly
toxic, known carcinogen, and phenol. When phenol touches your skin it
can cause it to swell, burn, peel, and break out in hives.
AMMONIA: is a very volatile chemical and is very damaging to your eyes,
respiratory tract and skin.
ANTIBACTERIAL CLEANERS: may contain triclosan, which is absorbed through
the skin and can be tied to liver damage.
BLEACH: is a strong corrosive. It will irritate or burn the skin, eyes
and respiratory tract. It may cause pulmonary edema or vomiting and coma
if ingested. Never mix bleach with acid toilet bowl cleaners or
ammonia. These mixtures may produce fumes which can be DEADLY.
CARPET AND UPHOLSTERY SHAMPOO: Most formulas are designed to over
power the stain itself; they accomplish the task but not without using
highly toxic substances. Some include perchlorethylene, a known
carcinogen that damages liver, kidney and nervous system damage; and
ammonium hydroxide, a corrosive, extremely irritable to eyes, skin and
respiratory passages.
CHLORINE: The first agent of chemical warfare was chlorine. WWII ended
with an abundance of this cheap chemical. In the name of huge profits,
it was added to our water supply and many other products. Chlorine is
the number one cause of breast cancer and can be lethal. Scientists
won't handle chlorine without protective gloves, facemasks, and
ventilation, yet it is in most store-brand cleaners, including
dishwasher detergents. The harmful effects are intensified when the
fumes are heated, as in the shower. It is in our drinking water,
swimming pools, Jacuzzis, and more.
DISHWASHER DETERGENTS: Most products contain chlorine in a dry form that
is highly concentrated. The #1 cause of household poisoning is dish
detergent. Dishwashing liquids are labelled "harmful if swallowed."
Each time you wash your dishes, some residue is left on them, which
accumulates with each washing. Your food picks up part of the residue
-- especially if your meal is hot when you eat it.
FURNITURE POLISH: contain petroleum distillates, which are highly
flammable and can cause skin and lung cancer. They contain
nitrobenzene, which is easily absorbed through the skin and extremely
toxic.
LAUNDRY ROOM PRODUCTS: Laundry detergents contain phosphorus, enzymes,
ammonia, naphthalene, phenol, sodium nitilotriacetate and countless
other chemicals. These substances can cause rashes, itches, allergies,
sinus problems and more. The residue left on your clothes, bed sheets,
etc. is absorbed through your skin, as is everything else you touch.
OVEN CLEANER: one of the most toxic products people use. They contain
lye and ammonia, which eat the skin, and the fumes linger and affect the
respiratory system. Then there - the residue that - intensified the next
time you turn your oven on. Use sea salt and baking soda instead.
TOILET BOWL CLEANERS: usually contain hydrochloric acid, a highly
corrosive irritant to both skin and eyes that damages kidneys and liver;
and hypochlorite bleach, a corrosive irritant that can burn eyes, skin
and respiratory tract. Toilet bowl cleaners also may cause pulmonary
edema, vomiting or coma if ingested. Contact with other chemicals may
cause chlorine fumes which may be fatal.
Are you one of the millions of consumers who tend to think anything sold
must be safe? Think again. Since WWII more than 80,000 synthetic
chemicals have been invented. Most have been created from petroleum and
coal tar for the purposes of chemical warfare. The sad thing is that
hardly any of these substances have been tested for safety, but have
been added to our food, water and cleaning products without our consent
and most often without informing us of any dangers. There is a lot of
intentional suppression in this industry that adds approximately 1000
new chemicals each year.
According to the National Research Council, "no toxic information is
available for more than 80% of the chemicals in everyday-use products.
Less than 20% have been tested for acute effects and less than 10% have
been tested for chronic, reproductive or mutagenic effects." Most have
not been tested for combined or accumulated effects, nor for their
effects on unborn children.
What can you do to protect your loved ones from chemical injury and
poisoning?
First of all, educate yourself, and find safer alternatives as much as
possible.
Secondly, minimize use of harsh chemicals. Clean spills and stains
immediately, remove food waste promptly, keep home moisture/humidity
down to 30-50%, and use entry way mats at all entrances.
Third, store all cleaning agents in their original containers out of the
reach of children. Follow the directions on the label and use only the
amount of product recommended. Read labels, follow safety precautions
and contact the manufacturer if you have questions.
By definition, we clean our homes to reduce damage or harm to human and
pet health, and to protect our valued possessions. Let's not make the
solution worse than the problem!

A Little Cabbage Wannabe, Brussel Sprouts!
I love these little green cabbage wannabe's, but I wondered exactly what
they contained and how I am benefiting from them and found some really
good things? Named after the capital of Belgium, where they are believed
to have first been cultivated.
The perfect miniature versions of the cabbage, Brussels sprouts are
available year round. They are, however, at their best from autumn
through early spring when they are at the peak of their growing season.
Brussels sprouts are members of the Brassica (cruciferous) family and
therefore kin to broccoli as well as cabbage. They grow in bunches of 20
to 40 on the stem of a plant that grows from two to three feet tall.
Sprouts manage to pack a whollop with folate, beta carotene along with
vitamins E, A, B5, B3, B 12, B6, B1, K, tryptophan. Then the minerals
present are potassium, phosphorus, iron, manganese, copper, calcium but
that's still not all there are omega 3 fatty acids and all this in that
little green miniature cabbage wannabe. Healthy eating at it's best?
Plant phytochemicals found in Brussels sprouts spur on the activity of
the body's natural defense systems to protect against disease, including
cancer. Scientists have found that sulforaphane, a potent phytonutrient
found in Brussel sprouts and other brassica vegetables, boosts the
body's detoxification enzymes, potentially by altering gene expression,
thus helping to clear potentially carcinogenic substances more quickly.
Additionally, researchers in the Netherlands investigated the effect of
a diet high in Brussels sprouts on DNA damage. They compared two groups
of healthy male volunteers. Five men ate a diet that included 300 g
(about 10 ounces) of cooked Brussels sprouts daily, while the other five
men ate a diet free of cruciferous vegetables. After three weeks, the
group that ate Brussels sprouts had 28% decrease in measured DNA damage.
Reduced DNA damage may very well translate to a reduced risk of cancer
since mutations in DNA allow cancer cells to develop.
When brussels and other cruciferous vegetables are cut, chewed or
digested, a sulfur-containing compound called sinigrin is brought into
contact with the enzyme myrosinase, resulting in the release of glucose
and breakdown products, including highly reactive compounds called
isothiocyanates. Isothiocyanates are not only potent inducers of the
liver's Phase II enzymes, which detoxify carcinogens, but research
conducted at the Institute for Food Research in the U.K. shows one of
these compounds, allylisothicyanate, also inhibits cell division and
stimulates programmed cell death in human tumor cells. A very good
thing!
Brussels sprouts are an excellent source of vitamin C, the body's
primary water-soluble antioxidant. Vitamin C supports immune function
and the manufacture of collagen, a protein that forms the ground
substance of body structures including the skin, connective tissue,
cartilage, and tendons. A large study conducted on nearly 20,000 men and
women in England found that people with the highest vitamin C levels had
half the risk of dying from heart disease, stroke or cancer. Risk of
dying from heart disease was reduced by 71% in men and 59% for women in
the group with the highest vitamin C levels.
How to Select and Store
Brussels sprouts should be firm, compact and vivid green. No yellowed or
wilted leaves and should not be puffy or soft in texture. If Brussels
sprouts are sold individually, choose those of equal size to ensure that
they will cook evenly
Cleaning Fresh Brussels;
Before washing Brussels sprouts, remove stems and any yellow or
discolored leaves. Wash them well under running water or soak them in a
bowl of water to remove any insects that may reside in the inner leaves.
Brussels sprouts are usually cooked whole. Cut an "X? in the bottom of
the stem before cooking to allow the heat to permeate throughout all of
the leaves and better ensure an even texture.
While Brussels sprouts are usually served as a side dish, warm, they
also make a nice addition to cold salads.
Our favorite ways of eating brussel sprouts are;
Braise Brussels sprouts in steamed with salt and pepper. Or toss
quartered cooked Brussels sprouts with sliced red onions, walnuts, black
olive slices and your favorite mild tasting cheese such as a goat cheese
or feta. Toss with olive oil and balsamic vinegar for an exceptionally
healthy, delicious side dish.
Keep unwashed and untrimmed Brussels sprouts in the vegetable
compartment of the refrigerator, in a perforated plastic bag, for three
to four days. If you want to freeze Brussels sprouts, blanch them first
for between three to five minutes. They will keep in the freezer for up
to one year. If kept at room temperature, their leaves will turn yellow
quickly.

The brain is a sturdy yet fragile organ that we tend to ignore,
yet expecting it to function properly and give us the acuity
needed! And we are failing it miserably today, by not giving it
the nutrients needed to work efficiently!
It's not totally your fault that your brain isn't functioning up
to it's potential, as our farmers are failing us by not growing
nutrient rich foods that our brain needs! Many decades ago
farming didn't require all the fertilizers and chemicals now
used and they rotated crops in a seven year pattern affording
the ground's sufficient nutrients according to the rotation
pattern. Past foods contained 75 - 80 per cent more nutrients

Your brain requires a nutrient balance to work properly. It is
my opinion along with several scientists that when the brain is
given the proper balance of minerals we can prevent a multitude
of mental problems (chemical imbalances).
Your brain uses 50% of your energy and only occupies a small
portion of your total body volume, yet is the most important
organ in your body. Are you frequently tired? Are you forgetting
things that shouldn't be forgotten? Are you experiencing brain
confusion, even to the point of hallucinating? What phobias
threaten to overtake you?
All those symptoms can be created by a malnourished brain! Your

Not only are people suffering from brain malnourishment. Our

For instance the Mad Cow Disease (BSE) that is now detected in

our wild animals and I suspect our domesticated animals as well,
but testing isn't being done on them to know for sure. So this
theory is mine alone, well not totally.
A Cambridge Professor, David Brown, PhD was able to reproduce 4
of the 4 protein transformations required to create the mutant
prion that causes BSE with mineral imbalances.
Strangely enough antelope at the London Zoo and cattle at an
experimental farm developed BSE that had never been fed the MBM
feed (feed containing dead and decaying animals) that the
scientists say is the cause of BSE. What they did find was a
mineral imbalance in the animals feed.
These findings are our canary in the mine, but nobody is
listening because they think it sounds too simple! I don't know
about you but I think simple is much better and something we can
do without spending billions of dollars!
It now takes more than our foodstuff, that we or our animals are
privy to, to provide our brain sufficient nourishment to
function properly.
My suggestion is; if you have been diagnosed with a problem that
involves the brain start giving it the right nutrients and you
may find that your Prozac, Wellbutrin, Zoloft or other
antidepressant isn't necessary after all! At least it's an
inexpensive place to start and I bet the majority of the time
will be successful!
Report: Warming May Lower Rice Yield

WASHINGTON (AP) - Global warming could mean bad news for one of the
world's most important crops, rice. Increased nighttime temperatures
were associated with significant declines in crop yield at the
International Rice Research Institute Farm in the Philippines, according
to a report in Monday's issue of Proceedings of the National Academy of
Sciences.
Indeed, an average daily temperature increase of 1 degree Celsius
resulted in a 10 percent reduction in the rice crop, according to the
researchers. One degree Celsius equals about 1.8 degree Fahrenheit.
Increasing temperatures, thought to be a result of heat trapped by
industrial and other chemicals in the atmosphere, have caused mounting
concern in recent years. Scientists have argued over the potential
effects of climate change on crops, largely basing their contentions on
laboratory tests and computer models of climate and crop yield.
This new study was a direct measurement of yields under field conditions
using practices that good farmers would employ, said lead researcher
Kenneth G. Cassman of the University of Nebraska.
Mary M. Peet, a professor of horticulture at North Carolina State
University, who was not part of the research group, said the report was
important "in that it links yield decreases in a particular location to
increases in night temperature. Many models have assumed that increases
in (carbon dioxide) with global climate change will compensate for
higher temperatures, but field data like this is valuable in pointing
out that even at higher CO2 levels, warmer temperatures still have a
negative effect."
Cassman and colleagues studied 12 years of rice yields at the farm,
along with weather data, to reach their conclusions.
The results are generally similar to findings reported last year
following a 17-year study of U.S. crop yields. That study indicated that
increases in temperature resulted in reductions in corn and soybean
yields.
Cassman said researchers are working to determine the cause of the
reduction, but they speculate that it is because the hotter nights make
the plants work harder just to maintain themselves, diverting energy
from growth.
"If you think about it, world records for the marathon occur at cooler
temperatures because it takes much more energy to maintain yourself when
running at high temperatures. A similar phenomenon occurs with plants,"
he said.
Tim L. Setter, a professor of soil, crop and atmospheric science at
Cornell University, commented that higher nighttime temperatures "could
consume carbohydrates in a nonproductive way, and by reducing the
reserves of carbohydrates, particularly at time of flowering and early
grain filling, would decrease the number of kernels that would be set."
Setter, who was not a part of the rice research team, said a recent
study in corn had shown that the number of kernels was decreased when
researchers experimentally increased the night temperatures.
Cassman commented that rice production has stagnated in recent years in
some key producing regions of Asia.
"That's something that hasn't been on the radar screen and needs to get
more attention," he said.
The new study was funded by the International Rice Research Institute
and the Agricultural Research Division of the University of Nebraska.
