Tobacco is a mood-altering, addictive drug
that kills 500,000 Americans a year (200 million worldwide)
Costs $400 billion each year, according to "Smoking and Health
Review," (1992).
The American Lung Association says tobacco contains more than 4,000
chemicals, 60 of which causes cancer.
Some of the 'killers' are radioactivity, arsenic, ammonia, lead,
formaldehyde, nitrogen dioxide, cadmium, phenol, benzene and hydrogen
cyanide (the 'gas chamber' gas that poisons the respiratory enzymes)

Infant Fluoride Intake Risky And Unnecessary
Infant formulas prepared with fluoridated water increase dental
fluorosis risk, according to the April 2004 Journal of the American
College of Nutrition and other studies. To prevent this tooth staining,
researchers caution against mixing infant formulas with fluoridated
water.
Fluorosis, white-spotted, yellow or brown stained, sometimes pitted or
crumbly teeth, is the too-late warning sign that babies overdosed on
fluoride. Neither a nutrient nor essential to health, fluoride can also
damage bones.
Researchers Marshall and colleagues found more fluorosed teeth in
children who consumed the most fluoridated water, either alone or
through infant formulas.
Researchers, D. Brothwell and H. Limeback, urge breastfeeding or mixing
infant formula with non-fluoridated water to avoid dental fluorosis, in
a November 2003 Journal of Human Lactation study. They found three times
more fluorosis in children consuming one milligram per liter fluoridated
water compared to those who drank non-fluoridated water.
Breastfeeding does not increase cavity risk, according to a recent
Journal of the American Dental Association study.
Researcher Ana Karina Mascarenhas also advised parents to avoid
fluoridated water for infant formula preparation to prevent fluorosis in
a 2000 Pediatric Dentistry study.
At least 11 other studies link reconstituted formula with fluorosis,
giving dentistry a new income source-concealing fluoride-induced
discolored teeth.
"To our knowledge, no U.S. dental or governmental agency promoting
fluoridation as a cavity preventive, such as the American Dental
Association or the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), warns parents to
avoid fluoridated water for infant feeding. Why not?" asks lawyer Paul
Beeber, president of the New York State Coalition Opposed to
Fluoridation.
Formula prepared with optimally fluoridated water provides 100 times
more fluoride than the amount in breast milk. Newborns do not have
"fully developed renal handling capacity for fluoride at this early
stage of life . . ." which can lead to dangerous bone-fluoride build up
and more.
Not only is infant fluoride intake risky, it's unnecessary. According to
the CDC, "Fluoride works primarily after teeth have erupted" Further,
the U.S. Food and Drug Administration never safety-tested fluoride for
ingestion.
In 2000, after extensively reviewing fluoride and health studies, a
panel of British scientists report, "We were unable to discover any
reliable good-quality evidence in the fluoridation literature
worldwide," despite incorrect news reports disseminated by prominent
fluoride proponents about this review.

Painkillers Inhibit Bone Healing
Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory painkillers known as NSAIDs continue to
be prescribed for patients as part of their recovery for healing
fractures even though using these medications have been found to
diminish bone healing, formation and remodeling.
NSAIDs block cyclooxygenase (COX) enzymes that create prostaglandins,
chemicals in the body that cause inflammation that can lead to problems
with indigestion and cause ulcers. Several of the prostaglandins,
created by COX-1 enzymes, are also important in forming new bones that
promote healing.
As a result, researchers believe NSAIDs exert significant effects on the
slowing of bone formation after injuries, the healing of fractures and
the growth of bone around prostheses. In some cases, however, some
NSAIDs have a positive effect on soft-tissue healing by stimulating
collagen that can increase the strength in the early phases of skin and
ligament healing, but results have been inconclusive.
Researchers recommended in cases of healing fractures and spinal
fusions, NSAIDs should be avoided at all costs.

A Little Cabbage Wannabe, Brussel Sprouts!
I love these little green cabbage wannabe's, but I wondered exactly what
they contained and how I am benefiting from them and found some really
good things? Named after the capital of Belgium, where they are believed
to have first been cultivated.
The perfect miniature versions of the cabbage, Brussels sprouts are
available year round. They are, however, at their best from autumn
through early spring when they are at the peak of their growing season.
Brussels sprouts are members of the Brassica (cruciferous) family and
therefore kin to broccoli as well as cabbage. They grow in bunches of 20
to 40 on the stem of a plant that grows from two to three feet tall.
Sprouts manage to pack a whollop with folate, beta carotene along with
vitamins E, A, B5, B3, B 12, B6, B1, K, tryptophan. Then the minerals
present are potassium, phosphorus, iron, manganese, copper, calcium but
that's still not all there are omega 3 fatty acids and all this in that
little green miniature cabbage wannabe. Healthy eating at it's best?
Plant phytochemicals found in Brussels sprouts spur on the activity of
the body's natural defense systems to protect against disease, including
cancer. Scientists have found that sulforaphane, a potent phytonutrient
found in Brussel sprouts and other brassica vegetables, boosts the
body's detoxification enzymes, potentially by altering gene expression,
thus helping to clear potentially carcinogenic substances more quickly.
Additionally, researchers in the Netherlands investigated the effect of
a diet high in Brussels sprouts on DNA damage. They compared two groups
of healthy male volunteers. Five men ate a diet that included 300 g
(about 10 ounces) of cooked Brussels sprouts daily, while the other five
men ate a diet free of cruciferous vegetables. After three weeks, the
group that ate Brussels sprouts had 28% decrease in measured DNA damage.
Reduced DNA damage may very well translate to a reduced risk of cancer
since mutations in DNA allow cancer cells to develop.
When brussels and other cruciferous vegetables are cut, chewed or
digested, a sulfur-containing compound called sinigrin is brought into
contact with the enzyme myrosinase, resulting in the release of glucose
and breakdown products, including highly reactive compounds called
isothiocyanates. Isothiocyanates are not only potent inducers of the
liver's Phase II enzymes, which detoxify carcinogens, but research
conducted at the Institute for Food Research in the U.K. shows one of
these compounds, allylisothicyanate, also inhibits cell division and
stimulates programmed cell death in human tumor cells. A very good
thing!
Brussels sprouts are an excellent source of vitamin C, the body's
primary water-soluble antioxidant. Vitamin C supports immune function
and the manufacture of collagen, a protein that forms the ground
substance of body structures including the skin, connective tissue,
cartilage, and tendons. A large study conducted on nearly 20,000 men and
women in England found that people with the highest vitamin C levels had
half the risk of dying from heart disease, stroke or cancer. Risk of
dying from heart disease was reduced by 71% in men and 59% for women in
the group with the highest vitamin C levels.
How to Select and Store
Brussels sprouts should be firm, compact and vivid green. No yellowed or
wilted leaves and should not be puffy or soft in texture. If Brussels
sprouts are sold individually, choose those of equal size to ensure that
they will cook evenly
Cleaning Fresh Brussels;
Before washing Brussels sprouts, remove stems and any yellow or
discolored leaves. Wash them well under running water or soak them in a
bowl of water to remove any insects that may reside in the inner leaves.
Brussels sprouts are usually cooked whole. Cut an "X? in the bottom of
the stem before cooking to allow the heat to permeate throughout all of
the leaves and better ensure an even texture.
While Brussels sprouts are usually served as a side dish, warm, they
also make a nice addition to cold salads.
Our favorite ways of eating brussel sprouts are;
Braise Brussels sprouts in steamed with salt and pepper. Or toss
quartered cooked Brussels sprouts with sliced red onions, walnuts, black
olive slices and your favorite mild tasting cheese such as a goat cheese
or feta. Toss with olive oil and balsamic vinegar for an exceptionally
healthy, delicious side dish.
Keep unwashed and untrimmed Brussels sprouts in the vegetable
compartment of the refrigerator, in a perforated plastic bag, for three
to four days. If you want to freeze Brussels sprouts, blanch them first
for between three to five minutes. They will keep in the freezer for up
to one year. If kept at room temperature, their leaves will turn yellow
quickly.
Now I know why I love these little things and you should love them too!

When the AMA was formed almost 160 years ago, its expressed
goal--creating a monopoly that increased the incomes and
reputations of physicians--was far less altruistic than most
people today would expect. Moreover, actions made a century ago
by its Council on Medical Education, to severely limit the
number of medical schools in existence as well as the students
who attend them, reinforced those outcomes.
How did this happen?
Back in the 1840s, AMA member physicians, or allopaths, were
competing for dollars and often losing to homeopaths. The key
difference between allopaths and homeopaths explains a great
deal: Allopaths used synthetic means to produce actions that
differed from the disease being treated while homeopaths used
natural techniques producing similar effects to the disease
being treated.
Also, allopaths sorely needed to repair their reputations based
on their well-known ability to kill patients accidentally
through crude practices such as mercury injections and
bloodletting.
To elevate their incomes and reputations, AMA developed a very
successful strategy based on their lobbying and networking
power. First, they worked with state legislators to restrict the
practice of competitors such as homeopaths, pharmacists, nurses,
midwives and chiropractors.
Second, and most importantly, AMA was responsible for building
formidable barriers that restricted the number of medical
schools in existence and, consequently, the number of students.
To that end, the council had a firm hand in closing 35 schools
during its first six years of existence (1904-1910).
The secretary of the council also formulated what became known
as the Flexner Report of 1910 that state medical boards used to
justify closing 25 more schools over three years and slashing
the number of students at the remaining medical schools by half.
Years later, Abraham Flexner, the author of the report, admitted
he knew little about medicine or medical education when he wrote
his infamous report.
Overall, the number of medical schools has dropped to 123, a 26
percent decline, since the AMA created the Council on Medical
Education a century ago, despite a U.S. population that has
quadrupled over that same time. During the peak year for medical
school applicants (1996), a mere 36 percent of the total number
of students enrolled in the United States (16,500) were
accepted.
Many experts and laymen assumed setting a much higher bar that
weeds out less capable candidates would create a "Lexus"
standard among physicians. But that is far from the case for a
number of reasons:
The stringent admissions policies enforced by medical schools
can create contradictions that unfairly discriminate against
some candidates based on race and gender preferences.
The growing number of questionable or unnecessary procedures
performed on patients annually that greatly inflate physician
incomes.
The whopping number of accidental deaths (120,000) and injuries
(1 million) that occur in U.S. hospitals on average every year.
Malpractice insurance for some physicians has ballooned to rates
as high as $160,000 per year.
Restricting the labor pool benefits doctors in one other very
important way: Unemployment is virtually unheard of in the
profession. In fact, the median salary for physicians is
$153,000 and almost twice that for specialists.
Going forward, the practice of medicine, as we know it today,
could evolve in a number of unusual and even frightening ways.
For one, some practices are moving to a cash-only payment model,
a lower fee paid by the patient that rejects all insurance
coverage as well as Medicaid and Medicare. One recent news story
demonstrated a startling science-fiction style scenario: An army
of robots roaming hospital halls and caring for patients that is
controlled from a remote location by a physician.
EPA Blames Soot for Unhealthful Air
By H. JOSEF HEBERT
WASHINGTON (AP) - U.S. counties that are home to nearly 100 million
people appear to flunk federal air standards because of microscopic soot
from diesel-burning trucks, power plants and other sources, the
Environmental Protection Agency said Tuesday.
The EPA said a preliminary analysis showed that 243 counties in 22
states - almost all in the eastern third of the nation and in California
- may have to take additional measures to curb pollution to meet the
standards by 2010.
EPA Administrator Mike Leavitt cautioned that the designations are
preliminary and some counties may be taken off the list after further
discussions with state officials. A final designation of areas in
noncompliance will be made in November.
Leavitt called the need to reduce airborne microscopic soot - particles
less than one-seventh as wide as a human hair - "the single most
important action we can take to make our air healthier."
He said soot-filled air annually causes 15,000 premature deaths, 95,000
cases of chronic or acute bronchitis, and thousands of hospital
admissions because of respiratory or cardiovascular illnesses.
The EPA in 1997 issued tougher standards for soot, for the first time
regulating particles as small as 2.5 microns. But because of lengthy
litigation finally resolved in 2002, the agency has yet to implement the
requirements or even officially designate what areas violate the
standard.
The designations made public Tuesday were characterized as the initial
agency step to putting states on notice as to which ones likely will
have to submit additional pollution control plans.
Leavitt said federal requirements being phased in to reduce sulfur in
gasoline and diesel fuel; requirements for cleaner trucks; and programs
aimed at curbing interstate transfer of pollution from power plants will
go a long way toward meeting the soot air standards.
But he acknowledged that states with counties in noncompliance may have
to take additional steps such as modifying transportation plans or
requiring new pollution controls when factories expand. Other measures
could include restrictions on wood stoves and open burning, or
retrofitting school buses with improved emission controls, he said.
The largest concentrations of counties in noncompliance were along the
urban corridor from New York City to Washington, D.C., eastern
Tennessee, in the Ohio River Valley region and counties surrounding the
urban centers of Pittsburgh, Cleveland, Detroit, Chicago, St. Louis and
Atlanta.
The Los Angeles Basin and interior central California also face
significant soot air quality problems as does a small corner of
northwestern Montana - one of the few strictly rural areas cited by the
EPA. Leavitt said the county had dirty air because of pollution from
mining activities near Libby, Mont.
The EPA designations went well beyond a list of counties that states
submitted to the agency in May. The governors listed 141 counties with a
population of 79 million people as in noncompliance. The EPA added
another 102 counties.
Leavitt said many of the counties were added because while they may have
air that meets the soot standards, they also have sources of pollution
within their borders that contribute significantly to adjacent areas
failing the standard.
The EPA said 174 counties either had air monitors showing soot levels
exceeding the standard or had no monitors but had pollution that
contributed to nearby counties being in noncompliance. Another 69
counties had air quality within the standard, according to monitors, but
were cited because they contributed to dirty air in nearby areas.
Environmentalists said the EPA's findings demonstrate the need to reduce
soot-forming pollution by requiring cleaner burning diesel fuel and
reducing the tons of pollution from coal-burning power plants.
It "underscores the urgency not only to clean up coal-fired power plants
but to begin cleaning up existing diesel trucks and heavy equipment and
get low-sulfur fuel out there," said Frank O'Donnell, executive director
of Clean Air Trust, an advocacy group.
The EPA's requirement for low-sulfur gasoline will go fully into effect
in 2006, and its requirement for low-sulfur diesel by 2010. But the
shift to less polluting truck and bus engines could take much longer
because of the slow vehicle turnover.
