Tobacco is a mood-altering, addictive drug
that kills 500,000 Americans a year (200 million worldwide)
Costs $400 billion each year, according to "Smoking and Health
Review," (1992).
The American Lung Association says tobacco contains more than 4,000
chemicals, 60 of which causes cancer.
Some of the 'killers' are radioactivity, arsenic, ammonia, lead,
formaldehyde, nitrogen dioxide, cadmium, phenol, benzene and hydrogen
cyanide (the 'gas chamber' gas that poisons the respiratory enzymes)

Something To Think About
============================
Don't Get Burned While Enjoying The Fireworks!
Home fireworks are legal in 40 states in the U.S., so you or a family
member may be planning a private display for Independence Day. Have fun,
but keep safe.
Beware of burns. Never try to relight dud fireworks, and keep water
handy in case there's a problem. Emergency rooms will be busy today
treating people with second-degree burns caused by careless firework
handling. Stay as far away as possible if you're watching - 50 feet is
considered a safe distance.
Protect your eyes. Some 2,000 eye injuries a year are fireworks caused .
If you're the one lighting the fireworks, be sure to wear eye protection
such as the protective goggles available in hardware stores.
Avoid hearing loss. A firecracker going off makes a sound of about 150
decibels; one-time exposure to sounds of 140 decibels or above can
damage the ears. Try to keep your distance, but if you're in a confined
space like a yard and can't, consider wearing earplugs. They reduce
noise 15 to 30 decibels if you wear them properly.
Enjoy!

Beat the Heat
Working in the garden in midday when the heat and humidity are high can
be dangerous. Drink plenty of fluids before going outdoors and while you
work, and watch for these signs that you may be getting into trouble:
nausea or cramps
dizziness
dry skin - no sweating
redness
goose bumps on chest and arms
incoherent speech and thoughts
loss of gait or coordination

Study: Multivitamins May Slow AIDS Virus
By STEPHANIE NANO
A study of HIV-infected African women found that daily doses of
multivitamins appear to slow down the disease and cut the risk of
developing AIDS in half.
The researchers who conducted the study in Tanzania suggested that
vitamin supplements could be used in developing countries to delay the
need for AIDS drugs, saving them for use at more advanced stages and
avoiding their side effects.
"It's a low-cost intervention that could result in major savings and be
helpful to many individuals in terms of better quality of life," said
Dr. Wafaie Fawzi of Harvard School of Public Health, who led the study
reported in Thursday's New England Journal of Medicine.
The results in Africa probably cannot be duplicated in the United
States, where people already take vitamins and nutritional deficiencies
are less common, he said.
Fawzi stressed that the vitamins are not a substitute for powerful AIDS
drugs, which are used once an HIV infection reaches later stages. Until
recently, AIDS drugs were not available to most people in Tanzania, and
they were not available when the study was done, he said.
So the researchers at Harvard and in Tanzania set out in 1995 to
determine whether vitamins would benefit a group of HIV-infected
pregnant women. The 1,078 women received either a multivitamin, a
multivitamin with vitamin A, vitamin A alone or a dummy pill.
The women were followed for about six years. Eighteen of the 271 women
who took multivitamins, or 7 percent, developed AIDS, compared with 31
of the 267 women, or 12 percent, who took a dummy pill. Nineteen percent
in the multivitamin group and 25 percent in the comparison group died,
but the difference was not statistically significant.
The women on multivitamins also had fewer late-stage complications such
as fatigue, diarrhea and mouth ulcers and lower levels of the virus in
their blood.
Besides boosting the immune system, multivitamins may also hinder the
virus' ability to make copies of itself, the researchers said.
They found no significant benefit to vitamin A alone, and adding vitamin
A to multivitamins somewhat reduced their benefits.
Although men were not studied, multivitamins are likely to benefit them
as well, Fawzi said.
According to Fawzi, the high-dose multivitamins with vitamins B, C, and
E used for the study cost about $15 for a year's supply; AIDS drugs in
Tanzania cost about $300 a year.
Still to be answered, Fawzi said, is whether lower-dose vitamins would
work and whether vitamins would help those already taking AIDS drugs.
In an accompanying editorial, Drs. Barbara Marston and Kevin M. De Cock
of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Kenya said
more study is needed to confirm the findings.
But in the meantime, doctors "would be justified in routinely
prescribing this nutritional support, since it may provide a benefit and
does no harm," they wrote.
LENA'S NOTE: You notice it says prevents "...slow down the disease
and cut the risk of developing AIDS in half..." Well, Dr. Garland has
had 100% success with a host of AIDs/HIV people, who have been free of
symptoms for almost fifteen years now, without chemical drugs, and one
of their daily supplements is a fast absorbable complete MultiVitamins

FOOD OF THE
WEEK
~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^
Citrullis lanatus!
Green on the outside and red or yellow on the
inside! Nothing says summer like this subtly crunch, thirst quenching
fruit. A nutritious food best to eat by itself. I know summer is really
here when my husband starts looking to purchase a watermelon!
Although watermelons can now be found in the
markets throughout the year, the season for watermelon is in the summer
when they are sweet and of the best quality. More Watermelon will be
probably be eaten this week than any other time in the U.S.
Watermelons are low in calories and very
nutritious. Recent research suggests that lycopene, a powerful
antioxidant, helps prevent some forms of cancer and cardiovascular
disease. Research shows that consuming foods that contain lycopene are
associated with a decreased risk of prostate and cervical cancer.
Watermelon is related to the cantaloupe, squash and
pumpkin as well as some other plants that grow on ground vines.
Watermelons can be round, oblong or spherical in shape and feature thick
green rinds that are often spotted or striped. They range in size from a
few pounds to upward of ninety pounds. The biggest watermelon grown
according to the 1996 Guiness Book of World Records weighed in at 262
pounds!
Health Benefits
While the watermelon does not contain a large
amount of nutrients it still is considered a healthy food! This
delectable thirst-quencher may also help quench the inflammation that
contributes to conditions like asthma, atherosclerosis, diabetes, colon
cancer, and arthritis. According to research conducted at the University
of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, men who consumed a lycopene-rich diet
were half as likely to suffer a heart attack as those who had little or
no lycopene in their diets. Red meat watermelon is rich in lycopene,
second only to the tomato.
Watermelon is also high in vitamin C and vitamin A,
in the form of disease-fighting beta carotene.
Watermelon also contains potassium, which is known
to help control blood pressure and possibly prevent strokes as well as
necessary for a regular heart beat.
Watermelon is not a commonly allergenic food, is
not included in the list of 20 foods that most frequently contain
pesticide residues, and is also NOT KNOWN to contain goitrogens,
oxalates, or purines.
Many new varieties of watermelons have been
developed in recent years. Yellow and seedless types are finding an
increasing share of the specialty watermelon market. Small excellent
quality "icebox" melons are also becoming increasingly popular.
"Seedless" marketing note:
"Seedless" varieties may have some seeds, especially in the first fruits
set if the plant is under moisture or temperature stress.
Choosing the right watermelon!
Look the watermelon over, choose a firm,
symmetrical watermelon that is free of bruises, cuts and dents.
Lift it up - the watermelon should be heavy for its
size. Watermelon is 92% water, that accounts for most of its weight.
Turn it over - on the underside of the watermelon
there should be a creamy yellow spot from where it sat on the ground and
ripened in the sun.
Following these tips will help you pick the best
watermelon available.
History
Originating in Africa, watermelons were first
cultivated in Egypt where testaments to their legacy were recorded in
hieroglyphics painted on building walls. The fruit was held is such
regard that it was placed in the tombs of many Egyptian kings. It is not
surprising that watermelon played such an important role in this
country, and subsequently in countries in the Mediterranean region,
since water was often in short supply in these areas, and people could
depend upon watermelon for its thirst-quenching properties.
Watermelons were brought to China around the 10th
century and then to the Western Hemisphere shortly after the discovery
of the New World. In Russia, where much of the commercial supply of
watermelons is grown, there is a popular wine made from this fruit. In
addition to Russia, the leading commercial growers of watermelon include
China, Turkey, Iran and the United States.
Tips for Preparing Watermelon:
Wash the watermelon before cutting it to prevent
introducing germs into the melon on cutting. Due to its large size, you
will probably not be able to run it under water in the sink. Instead,
wash it with a wet cloth or paper towel.
Depending upon the size that you desire, there are
many ways to cut a watermelon. The flesh can be sliced, cubed or scooped
into balls. Watermelon is delicious to eat as is, while it also makes a
delightful addition to a fruit salad. Jam, sorbet and juice are some
nutritious and delicious things you can make with watermelon.
While many people are just accustomed to eating the
juicy flesh of the watermelon, both the seeds and the rind are also
edible.
Enjoy your refreshing low calorie watermelon!

WASHINGTON (AP) - Even after the new Medicare law promised
billions of dollars in government spending on prescription
drugs, makers of best-selling medications raised prices quickly,
nearly triple the rate of inflation, an AARP survey found.
Pharmaceutical companies increased the prices they charge drug
wholesalers for the top 200 brand-name drugs an average of 3.4
percent in the first three months of 2004, while inflation in
general was 1.2 percent, according to the survey AARP released
Wednesday.
It covered the period after the new Medicare law was enacted and
just before the Bush administration began its pharmacy discount
card program.
The administration says the drug cards are offering Medicare
recipients 11 percent to 18 percent savings on brand name drugs,
but AARP said the price increases offset some of the promised
savings and demonstrate anew the need to legalize cheaper drug
imports from Canada and elsewhere. Drug companies and the
administration oppose that move, citing safety concerns.
"It's disappointing that prices jumped after the legislation was
signed, after they had assurances that they'd have a broader
market to sell to," AARP policy director John Rother said.
The law is estimated to cost $395 billion to $534 billion over
10 years, much of it directed to prescription drug purchases by
older and disabled Americans that the government has not
previously paid for.
Most of the top 10 selling drugs increased more than the
average, led by Bristol-Myers Squibb's Plavix. The price of the
blood thinner increased by 7.9 percent, AARP said.
Merck and Co. raised the price of Fosamax for osteoporosis by
4.9 percent, while the most popular forms of Celebrex, a pain
reliever, and cholesterol-reducing Lipitor - both made by Pfizer
- increased by 5 percent and 4.6 percent, respectively.
"Manufacturers are offsetting discounts with prices that are
higher than they otherwise would have been," Rother said at a
news conference held by the 35 million-member seniors' group.
The price increases also diminish the purchasing power of older
Americans whose Social Security income goes up at the much
slower pace of inflation.
The Medicare card program began in June, although companies
started advertising their prices in late April.
Under the program, companies that offer the discount card
negotiate lower prices with drug companies and pharmacies.
Medicare beneficiaries can buy the cards for up to $30 and get
discounts on drugs they purchase at neighborhood pharmacies or
by mail order. Poor people get the cards free, plus $600 a year
to fill their prescriptions. Several drug companies will provide
their products at little or no cost once that aid is exhausted.
Prescription drug coverage through Medicare begins in 2006,
replacing the temporary card program.
Mark McClellan, the administration's Medicare chief, said in an
interview that people who use the cards are seeing significant
savings. "None of our beneficiaries should be paying anything
close to list prices for drugs, and more help is available than
ever before," McClellan said.
Since the program began - after the price increases - the lowest
prices available with a discount card have been essentially
unchanged for Celebrex, Fosamax and Lipitor, three-best selling
drugs that The Associated Press has been tracking.
All can be bought at roughly the same prices through the online
pharmacy drugstore.com and for much less in Canada.
AARP gave crucial backing to the new Medicare law, but has been
a vocal critic of pharmaceutical manufacturers and their
congressional allies who have resisted legalizing drug imports.
The seniors group also has urged drug makers to limit price
increases to the rate of inflation, to no avail.
Rother singled out Bristol-Myers and Pfizer, which between them
produce 12 of the 25 top-selling drugs. Bristol Myers-Squibb
prices rose 7.2 percent, while Pfizer increased its prices 4.8
percent in the first three months of 2004, AARP said.
Pfizer spokeswoman Laura Glick acknowledged the prices went up,
but said those are annual increases that typically occur in
January. "And that doesn't include mandatory government
discounts and other negotiated discounts," Glick said. "We are
committed to responsible pricing."
Bristol-Myers spokesman Rob Hutchison said the company spends an
average of $800 million on each new drug it develops. "The
prices of our innovative medicines reflect the research needed
to discover and develop them," he said.
Despite the increase in Fosamax, Merck & Co. (MRK) showed
average price increases of 1.6 percent. It has acknowledged
raising the price of the painkiller Vioxx by 4.8 percent in
March. AARP showed no increase in the price of Vioxx, but said
the higher price shows up in its April data.
Lab Uses DNA to Track Stolen Tree's Logs
By RICK CALLAHAN
INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - Maybe the crime-solvers at a Purdue University tree
lab could inspire a new TV series: "Law & Order: Special Botany Unit."
The scientists used DNA testing to match the stump of a stolen black
walnut tree with two logs sold to a lumber mill 60 miles away.
"This DNA technology put the log back on the stump," said Keith Woeste,
a molecular geneticist at Purdue's Hardwood Tree Improvement and
Regeneration Center.
The case began in November when an incensed landowner in western
Indiana's Warren County contacted the state Department of Natural
Resources after finding the stumps and chainsawed branches of a black
walnut tree and a black cherry tree on his property. The wood from the
55-foot-tall black walnut was worth at least $2,500.
Conservation officer Don Dyson said a timber-cutting crew had been
working in the area when the trees were cut, and a timber mill the
harvester routinely sells to had two large black walnut logs that
appeared to match the missing tree.
Although the end of the stump and the logs appeared to match, "we
weren't 100 percent sure," Dyson said.
DNR employees met with scientists from the Purdue center after a state
forester mentioned they regularly perform DNA tests on trees as part of
their research.
Woeste assigned four students to perform a genetic analysis technique
called DNA fingerprinting to compare the confiscated logs' DNA to that
of the stump and branches.
Woeste said the students' analysis matched the various pieces of wood to
such a high degree of accuracy that, like DNA evidence in a rape case,
it would have been admissible in court.
A tree-poaching conviction could have cost the timber-cutter his state
license, but he paid the landowner $9,000 - about three times the value
of the trees - to avoid going to court.
"Once he found out all the evidence that we had he was more than willing
to settle with the landowner," Dyson said. "That license is his
livelihood."
