Here in the USA we celebrate our country's birthday/independence today so it's a very active celebration time with picnics and fireworks all over our country this evening and tomorrow will be a lot of sick people due to the over-celebrating... Some will simply be a temporary hangover from too much alcohol. Some will be from too much sun and the body will look like a tomato and will require some healthy medicating, which you will find in today's issue. Some will be from overeating that will pass but the body will need some added probiotics to help repair that problem.

As summer sun beats down on half the world so many head for the beach, lakes or rivers with the hope of getting a tan! Sun is healthy but too much can be dangerous and using a sun screen isn't the healthy answer!

What to do when you stay out too long and over expose to the suns rays? Sun screens or tanning lotions last very short periods of time leaving you open to burn and on top of that the skin cancer rate elevated as sun screen usage came to be? Besides if you go in the water it's gone and your body is exposed to burning? Those lotions can be detrimental to your health with all the chemicals in them so why risk it when there is something healthier? How about making sunning healthier, easy and affordable for all? If you are going to be out more than a hour expect to turn red!

Ultraviolet (UV) radiation in sunlight creates free radicals, which damage DNA in skin cells and trigger abnormal growth, often leading to skin cancer. Antioxidants such as vitamin E mop up these radicals and are thought to protect against UV damage. So Masamitsu Ichihashi and his colleagues from the Kobe University School of Medicine made a healthy discovery of something simple and a potent source of antioxidants, provides UV protection right from your kitchen!

APPLYING virgin olive oil to your skin after sunbathing protects you against skin cancer, claim Japanese scientists. They have found that using it as an after-sun lotion slows tumor growth in mice.

Researchers gave hairless mice three UV sessions a week under a sunlamp. Five minutes after the treatment, they painted their skin with either regular or extra virgin olive oil. After 18 weeks, control mice started to grow skin tumors, and mice treated with regular olive oil fared little better. But mice daubed with virgin olive oil took an extra six weeks to show any sign of cancer. What's more, their tumors were smaller, less frequent and there was less DNA damage to skin cells.

The researchers are quick to point out that olive oil isn't a sunscreen. But they claim that rubbing on olive oil after sunbathing could help protect skin from UV damage.

So if you have had too much sun, spray or rub Virgin Olive oil on for healing damage!

Baby Dies From Toxic Breast Milk

Codeine prescribed for postnatal pain can produce deadly concentrations of morphine in breast milk.

A lawsuit over the death of Toronto newborn Tariq Jamieson, who died as a result of opiate toxicity in his mother's breast milk, has renewed the debate over prescribing such drugs as Tylenol 3 to breastfeeding mothers.

Tariq's mother Rani was prescribed Tylenol 3 for lingering episiotomy pain. Although Tariq was initially healthy, he developed increasing lethargy after the seven-day mark, and after 11 days he was brought to a pediatrician due to concerns about his skin color and poor feeding. Two days later, Tariq died.

Tariq was found to have high blood levels of acetaminophen, and a blood concentration of morphine six times higher than would normally be considered safe in a neonate. Tylenol 3 contains both acetaminophen and codeine, which is metabolized to morphine in the body. However, not everyone metabolizes codeine at the same rate. Rani Jamieson was an ultra-rapid metabolizer of codeine to morphine, which means that the opiate built up in her breastmilk very fast.
While ultra-rapid metabolization of codeine occurs in about 1 percent of Caucasians, it occurs in as much as 30 percent of some African and Asian populations.

Invasive Decorative Plants Targeted

TOLEDO, Ohio (AP) - Bamboo-like plants that grow taller than adults have choked out native plants in a marsh that once teemed with life at Maumee Bay State Park along Lake Erie.

Wild flowers at the park have disappeared. Migrating birds have gone elsewhere. The parkland has changed so much that naturalist Dana Bollin no longer leads tours past the common reed grass towering along Maumee Bay's boardwalk.

"I hate to spend an hour talking about invasive plants," she said.

Environmental groups hope to slow the spread of decorative but invasive plants by persuading nurseries to stop selling them and instead promote native species.

Big-box retailer Meijer Inc. announced in March it is removing two invasive trees - Norway maple and Lombardy poplar - from its stores in Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois and Kentucky.

In California, a partnership of nursery owners and environmental leaders is working on a campaign called "Plant Right" that will help gardeners find native plants suited for their regions.

Only a small percentage of plants sold in nurseries are nonnative troublemakers that crowd out other plants and rob animals of their food sources.

However, environmental groups cite the ease with which these invasive plants can end up in the hands of gardeners or landscapers.

Some, like Norway maples and Japanese barberry, are big sellers.

Others are not a problem in most places, such as baby's breath. Few gardeners know that it is taking over from the natural grasses that help stabilize sand dunes along Lake Michigan.

"It's a cute name and you think it's so harmless," said Melissa Soule, a spokeswoman for The Nature Conservancy in Michigan.

Environmentalists hope getting information to consumers will lead them to embrace native plants.

Meijer stores in the Midwest now have brochures in their garden departments promoting native plants and tags on plants and trees that are recommended by The Nature Conservancy.

"We can reach everyday shoppers and help them understand there is a choice that can be made," said Meijer spokeswoman Stacie Behler.

A few states, including Connecticut, Massachusetts and New Hampshire, have banned the sale of dozens of invasive plants. New Hampshire's ban on Norway maples, Japanese barberry and burning bush took effect this year.

Over the last three years, nursery owners, landscape architects and environmental leaders in California have developed a list of about 20 invasive plants that they want to stop.

It will be up to nursery and store owners to decide whether they will follow the recommendations.

"It can be good for business, and it will be good for the environment," said Terri Kempton, of Sustainable Conservation, an environmental group based in San Francisco.

Nursery owners and retailers are getting involved, in part, because they want to act before other states attempt to ban plants. The industry also recognizes how fast these problem plants have spread and how much is being spent to control them.

"There's no denying that some of the plant materials we've sold over the years have become problems," said Bob Falconer, executive vice president of the California Association of Nurseries and Garden Centers.

The federal government spent $631 million dealing with invasive plants and animals in 2000, according to a U.S. General Accounting Office report.

California, Florida and Hawaii have big problems with the invaders. Florida spent $54 million in 1999 on trying to control nonnative plants, the GAO report said.

The Nature Conservancy's work with the horticulture industry in Florida led Lowe's Cos. (LOW) to stop selling about 50 invasive plants at its home improvement stores in the state. Other nurseries in the state also have pulled problem plants.

A big key in getting stores to stop selling the plants is showing them just how destructive they have become, said Kristina Serbesoff-King, invasive species coordinator for The Nature Conservancy in Florida.

"They are willing to listen if it's based on sound science," Serbesoff-King said.
