Tobacco is a mood-altering, addictive drug
that kills 500,000 Americans a year (200 million worldwide)
Costs $400 billion each year, according to "Smoking and Health
Review," (1992).
The American Lung Association says tobacco contains more than 4,000
chemicals, 60 of which causes cancer.
Some of the 'killers' are radioactivity, arsenic, ammonia, lead,
formaldehyde, nitrogen dioxide, cadmium, phenol, benzene and hydrogen
cyanide (the 'gas chamber' gas that poisons the respiratory enzymes)

The week is a busy one and a sad one. I received word that our
very best long time friends son, 48 years old, has been in the hospital
for over a week and a half now and having to be transfused. No answers
have been forth coming as to what is happening to his blood. He was
transferred from one large university hospital to the City of Hope,
which is not good news. He started with flu symptoms about three of
weeks ago and I suspect he killed his ecosystem with aspirin and/or
ibuprofen. I also suspect that has been compounded now with antibiotics
given IV. It would be too easy for doctors to rebuild his intestinal
tract, which is very probably the cause of this whole mess. Traditional
treatment will make it worse and we may lose him. He is of the belief
that "doctors know best." His parents are trying to get that brain set
changed and not having a lot of luck. People seem to think if it's
simple it doesn't work. That just isn't true but the brain washing of
that idea, over the last 40 years, has become engrained into the brains
of way-too-many!

Something To Think About
============================
Bringing Wellness Home
by Colleen Langenfeld
Copyright (c) 2004
Do you think that wellness is fundamentally important?
If you're reading this article, you probably do.
I've noticed that some people think of wellness as a
luxury item. If they have enough time, then they'll
exercise. If they have enough money, then they'll take
vitamins. And to tell the truth, that's how I thought
of wellness for many years.
But not any more.
Now, I see wellness as part of my family's foundation.
For example:
- I want my kids to be able to do well in school, so
I pay attention to the nutrition and rest they receive.
- I want to be able enjoy my life as long as
possible. So I take an active role in caring for
myself using tools like good-quality supplements,
stress management, and pursuit of high-quality
relationships.
Today's incredibly busy lifestyles leave little 'spare'
time. Indeed, the pace we expect to maintain demands
that we take premium care of ourselves; body, mind and
spirit. Just as we understand we need to care for our
expensive automobiles to keep them working properly, so
we need to realize we are using billion dollar bodies
which cannot be replaced.
Adding one more thing to our already overworked schedules
is simply too daunting, though. So forget about 'adding'
wellness. Instead, what if we look at what we are already
doing in our everyday lives and tweak a few things here
and there to our advantage.
- Be practical.
Make it your aim to gently increase the level of
wellness within your home in measurable ways. Scrutinize
the activities you're currently doing and focus on
improving results. For example, you are already eating,
right? Decide to replace one meal a week with a low-fat
version. You could simply switch to low-fat ingredients
or opt for a scrumptious new recipe. Keep this simple!
Do a low-fat recipe search online and choose recipes
that are tasty and fast. Or go to a place like
http://www.paintedgold.com/Pages/Recipes.html where you
can see a variety of nutritious recipes every day ready
to print out and use.
- Slow but steady.
Think you have to do a major overhaul to see an
improvement in the wellness level in your family? It's
just not so. If you commit yourself to one change a week
(like the recipe idea) you'll see the power that small,
steady change can create in your life. Subscribe to a
health and wellness publication that you can read for 2
minutes while you're brushing your teeth. Sign up for
one of the many online 'quotes' ezines that will deliver
an uplifting tidbit each day to your inbox, then print it
out and share with the family at dinnertime. Feed on
these simple changes and odds are great you'll be glad to
stick with them over the long haul.
- What's the point?
Ever heard any of these statements?
'Does it really matter if I walk tonight? I only have
20 minutes and I'm so tired from work.'
'Why drink a glass of water before I eat? It's only
water, after all. I need taste!'
'I know I never spend much time with my son, but he's
got to understand that I'm working so hard for him,
after all.'
The impact of a life of wellness cannot be overstated.
It's the cumulative effect of what we do or don't do that
adds up and makes us who and what we are. Just like
brushing your teeth everyday adds up in your favor, NOT
brushing your teeth adds up, too. When wellness is
treated like breathing, wonderful things can start to
happen over time, without any added cost or stress.
- Keep it simple.
Lots of ideas appeal to us. We study them, chat about
them, put posters on our walls about them. But rarely do
we take action on an idea that appeals to us. Part of the
reason why is our own internal inertia. For example,
which is easier: staying with a product because we've
'always' used it or taking an hour or two to educate
ourselves about safer, better alternatives. We can give
up our nightly TV time just once, do a little searching,
find a company we like and switch stores. Done.
Not easier. Just better.
- Let it go.
Got an old unhealthy habit that is deeply entrenched?
Whether it's giving up smoking or stopping that nasty
nag habit with our spouse, we all have these stubborn
areas. Some people can hit them head-on with success,
but for most of us it's just not that easy. I'm a
believer in adding healthy pleasures until the old
(unhealthy) habits just fade away (or at least have less
hold on us). Focus on a new positive until you no longer
are so interested in the old negative. Everyday let a
smart habit win one more time than yesterday. Remember,
work towards lasting results, not overnight miracles.
- Teaching our children.
I'm convinced part of the reason God uses parents to
raise kids is to help the parents grow up. Once we commit
to parenting with integrity, we get humble very quickly.
Role modeling takes work. Deciding to be the best parent
we can be automatically raises our desire of making
things better for those we love. Every day. A little at
a time.
Are you interested in raising the wellness level in your
family's home? Look for simple exchanges in your everyday
activities and embrace a better lifestyle for you and
your loved ones starting today!

TODAY'S HEALTH TIP
~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~
Hospital Uses Pill With Camera Inside
By AVA THOMAS BENSON
LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) - A camera encased in a pill is giving doctors at
Arkansas Children's Hospital a look at their young patients' entire
digestive tracts - about 90 percent of which had gone unseen before.
The Given Imaging M2A Capsule, developed in the United States by an
Israeli missile specialist in the mid-1990s, was given to the first two
Children's Hospital patients Thursday. It is equipped with flash bulbs
and takes 50,000 pictures over the course of eight hours, or the amount
of time it takes the pill to work its way through the gastrointestinal
tract.
Children's is one of about 1,700 hospitals worldwide using the pills,
according to a representative for Given Imaging, the company that
manufactures and distributes the pills. The hospital is also one of nine
pediatric hospitals to begin using the pills since the Food and Drug
Administration approved them for pediatric use last fall.
Gary Gramling, 17, of Paragould, and Caleb Strange, 11, of Log Cabin,
La., were the first to take the pill at Children's. Doctors suspect both
may have Crohn's Disease, an ailment that can cause intestinal blockage
and sores or ulcers that can tunnel through the intestinal wall, become
infected and require surgery.
The pill is about the size of a multivitamin - a little less than an
inch long and about as big around as the tip of an average woman's pinky
finger. Patients swallow the pill with a glass of water and spend eight
hours wearing a belt fitted with a wireless digital image recorder to
record images sent by the camera. At the end of the day, they return the
recorder to the hospital and the images are downloaded onto a computer
for viewing.
Hospitals began using the pill in 2001 for diagnosis as an alternative
to a traditional endoscopy. An endoscope is a long, flexible tube with a
camera at the end that is inserted through the patient's mouth. Dr.
Emmanuel Siaw, a gastroenterologist at Children's, said an endoscopy
only allows doctors to see the first six to eight inches of the small
intestine. The M2A pill provides photographs of the full 20- to
27-foot-long organ.
Siaw said Gramling and Strange had each had endoscopies and that doctors
had been unable to confirm the Crohn's diagnosis.
Carlo de la Mata, a spokesman for Given, said even though the pill does
not have some of the advantages of an endoscopy, "its value is in the
diagnosis."
The pill photographs the intestine in its natural state, de la Mata
said, because it is being pushed through like food would without the
interference created by an endoscope.
"An endoscopy is not seeing the natural state," he said. "It works very
well, but now we're seeing things we never saw before ... and it's very
patient-friendly; a little less invasive than an endoscopy."
Siaw said he does not believe the M2A capsule will replace the endoscopy
because the capsules can't take tissue samples during their trips.
However, he said about 40 percent to 50 percent of patients with
intestinal problems are affected in areas doctors are only able to see
with the capsule.
To help doctors sift through the 50,000 photographs, they use software
that identifies abnormalities, Siaw said. It takes about two or three
hours to read the results from the test, he said.
The better look at patients' small intestines will allow doctors to
better diagnose various diseases, including cancer, but Siaw said the
pill would mostly be used for detecting diseases other than cancer at
Children's because gastrointestinal cancer is uncommon in children.
Siaw said the one-time-use pill usually leaves the body on its own
within 1 to 3 days.

FOOD OF THE
WEEK
~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^
Citrullis lanatus!
Green on the outside and red or yellow on the
inside! Nothing says summer like this subtly crunch, thirst quenching
fruit. A nutritious food best to eat by itself. I know summer is really
here when my husband starts looking to purchase a watermelon!
Although watermelons can now be found in the
markets throughout the year, the season for watermelon is in the summer
when they are sweet and of the best quality. More Watermelon will be
probably be eaten this week than any other time in the U.S.
Watermelons are low in calories and very
nutritious. Recent research suggests that lycopene, a powerful
antioxidant, helps prevent some forms of cancer and cardiovascular
disease. Research shows that consuming foods that contain lycopene are
associated with a decreased risk of prostate and cervical cancer.
Watermelon is related to the cantaloupe, squash and
pumpkin as well as some other plants that grow on ground vines.
Watermelons can be round, oblong or spherical in shape and feature thick
green rinds that are often spotted or striped. They range in size from a
few pounds to upward of ninety pounds. The biggest watermelon grown
according to the 1996 Guiness Book of World Records weighed in at 262
pounds!
Health Benefits
While the watermelon does not contain a large
amount of nutrients it still is considered a healthy food! This
delectable thirst-quencher may also help quench the inflammation that
contributes to conditions like asthma, atherosclerosis, diabetes, colon
cancer, and arthritis. According to research conducted at the University
of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, men who consumed a lycopene-rich diet
were half as likely to suffer a heart attack as those who had little or
no lycopene in their diets. Red meat watermelon is rich in lycopene,
second only to the tomato.
Watermelon is also high in vitamin C and vitamin A,
in the form of disease-fighting beta carotene.
Watermelon also contains potassium, which is known
to help control blood pressure and possibly prevent strokes as well as
necessary for a regular heart beat.
Watermelon is not a commonly allergenic food, is
not included in the list of 20 foods that most frequently contain
pesticide residues, and is also NOT KNOWN to contain goitrogens,
oxalates, or purines.
Many new varieties of watermelons have been
developed in recent years. Yellow and seedless types are finding an
increasing share of the specialty watermelon market. Small excellent
quality "icebox" melons are also becoming increasingly popular.
"Seedless" marketing note:
"Seedless" varieties may have some seeds, especially in the first fruits
set if the plant is under moisture or temperature stress.
Choosing the right watermelon!
Look the watermelon over, choose a firm,
symmetrical watermelon that is free of bruises, cuts and dents.
Lift it up - the watermelon should be heavy for its
size. Watermelon is 92% water, that accounts for most of its weight.
Turn it over - on the underside of the watermelon
there should be a creamy yellow spot from where it sat on the ground and
ripened in the sun.
Following these tips will help you pick the best
watermelon available.
History
Originating in Africa, watermelons were first
cultivated in Egypt where testaments to their legacy were recorded in
hieroglyphics painted on building walls. The fruit was held is such
regard that it was placed in the tombs of many Egyptian kings. It is not
surprising that watermelon played such an important role in this
country, and subsequently in countries in the Mediterranean region,
since water was often in short supply in these areas, and people could
depend upon watermelon for its thirst-quenching properties.
Watermelons were brought to China around the 10th
century and then to the Western Hemisphere shortly after the discovery
of the New World. In Russia, where much of the commercial supply of
watermelons is grown, there is a popular wine made from this fruit. In
addition to Russia, the leading commercial growers of watermelon include
China, Turkey, Iran and the United States.
Tips for Preparing Watermelon:
Wash the watermelon before cutting it to prevent
introducing germs into the melon on cutting. Due to its large size, you
will probably not be able to run it under water in the sink. Instead,
wash it with a wet cloth or paper towel.
Depending upon the size that you desire, there are
many ways to cut a watermelon. The flesh can be sliced, cubed or scooped
into balls. Watermelon is delicious to eat as is, while it also makes a
delightful addition to a fruit salad. Jam, sorbet and juice are some
nutritious and delicious things you can make with watermelon.
While many people are just accustomed to eating the
juicy flesh of the watermelon, both the seeds and the rind are also
edible.
Enjoy your refreshing low calorie watermelon!

How to begin a love affair with vegetables
By Jeannie Crabtree C.Ac.
We all hear that we need to eat plenty of vegetables for better
health. It is a known fact that the minerals you need for good
health are in your vegetables. If you do not get enough
minerals, your body cannot ward off disease and begins a
downward spiral into bad health.
However, I do see some people who do not eat vegetables if they
can help it. Maybe you know someone like this yourself. Maybe it
is you!
Let me tell you a story and you can use my imaginary
instructions to him for your self, if you have this same dislike
for vegetables.
I was at someone's house the other day that has prostate cancer.
Let's call him Al. As a side point, It is important to increase
vegetable and vegetable juice consumption if one has cancer.
Plenty of vegetables help one become alkaline which builds
health and gives extra nutrients that will help the body fight
the cancer.
Previously I had suggested some super green food powder at a
half scoop twice a day. I wanted to start him out slow as I
heard complaints during the consultation about Al not liking
vegetables.
So being at Al?s house, I find the man was taking his green food
powder reluctantly. Actually he first stalled getting his drink
when his wife said it was time to take it for about an hour.
Then he was complaining the whole time he made it and drank it.
Al said something to the effect that he was not a cow and did
not like cow food.
Actually I did not say much, but tried to joke him through it a
little. In retrospect, I would like to have had the following
conversation:
I hear you Al. You just don't like those vegetables and leafy
green vegetables I have suggested. They don't taste good to you.
You would rather have your sweets. You know that veggies are
good for you, but you just can't seem to get used to eating
them. Let me help you here. Did you know that ?.
You think in pictures
Did you know that you think in pictures? You are motivated by
the things that you want to move away from that might cause
emotions you don't want such as pain, grief, anger etc. Your
cancer is certainly something you want to move away from.
You are also motivated by the things you want to move towards.
Emotions that would go with this are feeling happy, satisfied,
loved, forgiven, respected, etc.
Move away from or move towards. These two ways you are motivated
are the key to help you get past your dislike of vegetables.
Decide which type you are. Which are you most motivated by? Do
you put moving away foremost in your mind or moving toward?
Ready to Start? Grab some veggies. Look at them, feel them taste
them, Chew on them. Snap them, break them up and hear the
crunchiness. Involve as many of your senses as you can.
While doing that, do one of two things:
If motivated by what you are moving away from:
Paint the picture of what you are leaving behind. Accentuate the
problems. Make them look really big and bad in your picture.
Show your self what the big bad picture would be like a year
from now or 5 years from now if you continued eating your bad
diet. Put a lot of feeling into this.
If motivated by what you are moving towards:
Paint a big bright picture of what you will look like and feel
like when you have better health. Think about who you love, who
loves you and what you want to do and could do when you have
good health.
Al, maybe you are not sure where you fit in to this process.
Then play both pictures for yourself. Really put some pictures
in your head. Use plenty of color. Turn the sound up.
Now which did you feel more motivated by to eat the vegetables
in you need?
Play this picture over and over again as you eat the right
foods, especially your fruits and vegetables.
See, that was not so bad. It is all according to the message you
give your self. Certainly your body thanks you for the better
nutrition, and I know you are going to start feeling better and
having more energy as you continue to eat the better diet.
In my mind, Al gives me a smile. He is beginning to get the
picture.

European Environmental Rules Propel Change in U.S.
By OTTO POHL
July 6, 2004
RUSSELS - When Darcy White of Raytown, Mo., chose to breast-feed her
baby daughter two years ago, she had never heard of brominated flame
retardants. But after randomly participating in a study, she learned
that her breast milk carried unusually high levels of the chemicals.
Since then, the Environmental Protection Agency has announced an
agreement with chemical manufacturers to phase out the worst of these
toxic compounds, which are present in a wide variety of consumer goods
like furniture and computer monitors, and Congress is considering
legislation to make the ban permanent.
But it was only after the chemicals had been banned here in Europe that
sufficient political pressure built for a phaseout in the United States.
That cycle was no accident. Globalization has often been condemned as
encouraging a race to the bottom as multinationals seek the cheapest and
least regulated place to do business. But increasingly, American
environmental and public health advocates see globalization as a way to
start a race to the top. They are taking their issues to the European
Union, hoping to use regulations there as a lever for regulations in the
United States.
"We are putting more resources into Europe than we otherwise would have
done," says Charlotte Brody, coordinator of Health Care Without Harm, a
Washington-based group attempting to reduce harmful substances in
hospital supplies. "We desperately need the E.U. to be raising the bar
and show what is possible."
Environmental groups, too, are working more closely with European
lawmakers.
"We feel that Europe is a real opportuni ty," says Ned Helme, executive
director for the Center for Clean Air Policy in Washington. Once Europe
moves ahead on programs to curb the gases believed to cause global
warming, Mr. Helme believes, it will promote change in the United
States. "We're pushing where the opportunity for innovation is
greatest," he said.
The regulations affect a broad range of American chemical, energy and
electronics companies, and industry groups say bureaucrats they did not
elect are wielding unprecedented power over them, based on insufficient
evidence of harm.
"The E.U. is going where no man has gone before," says James Lovegrove,
managing director of the European division of the American Electronics
Association, a United States industry lobby. "The moment the ink hits
the paper in Europe it becomes a global piece of legislation.''
The generally stricter European laws reflect a different philosophical
approach to regulation, says Dr. Indra Spiecker, a lawyer specialized in
comparative law and assistant professor for American law at the
University of Osnabrück in Germany. American lawmakers primarily look to
cost-benefit analysis, which holds that the benefit of imposing
regulation should outweigh its cost. European nations have more readily
embraced what is called the precautionary principle. Essentially,
Europeans emphasize the cost of inaction, while Americans tend to focus
on the cost of action.
"Fifteen years ago consumer issues would start in the United States and
sweep over to Europe," says Ursula Schliessner, a product safety lawyer
at McKenna Long & Aldridge in Brussels. "Now when there are consumer
issues in the E.U. they trigger reactions in the United States."
In the case of the flame retardants, scientists from the Environmental
Working Group, researching the prevalence of the chemicals in American
mothers, discovered that Ms. White, an outwardly healthy 31-year-old
practicing nurse, had some of the highest levels ever recorded. Studies
have shown that, in laboratory animals, the chemicals can cause severe
damage to the brain, especially in the first months of life. No one has
proved that the substances are dangerous to humans, and Ms. White's
daughter, Katelyn, is thriving.
Although concerned, Ms. White does not warn expectant mothers who come
to her maternity ward to be tested for the chemicals. "You don't want to
freak out mothers more than they already are," she says.
