this marriage and it still seems like a few months ago for the most
part. The first 30 years of our marriage were rough ones for my husband

Headache Drugs Can Actually
Give You a Headache
Overusing certain
medications -- including those used to treat headaches -- can lead to "medication
overuse headache" (MOH), and researchers have pinpointed the
medications most at fault.
Upon reviewing the charts of 1,200 acute headache patients seen during
2005, 2000, 1995 and 1990, researchers from Princeton University found
that diagnosis of MOH remained stable over the 15-year period. However,
the drugs responsible for MOH changed dramatically:
`MOH from ergotamine overuse (used to treat migraine headaches) fell
from 19 percent to 0 percent
`MOH involving triptans, a newer class of drugs, increased from 0
percent to 22 percent
`MOH due to analgesic painkillers increased from 8 percent to 32 percent
`Overuse headache from combinations of acute medications increased from
10 percent to 23 percent
`MOH from opioid overuse decreased slightly
Many patients overuse prescription medications, and the researchers
recommended implementing public health initiatives to educate doctors
and patients about setting limits on prescription and other medications,
and raising awareness that overusing medications for migraine headaches
can lead to MOH.

Canada Confirms 6th Case
of Mad Cow

TORONTO (AP) - Canada confirmed on Tuesday its sixth case of mad cow
disease and said it would investigate where the cow was born and
what other animals may have eaten the same feed.
The Canadian Food Inspection Agency said test results confirmed what
was suspected last week. The animal was at least 15 years of age,
and was born before Canada implemented restrictions on potentially
dangerous feed in 1997.
The agency said it was launching an investigation.
Mad cow disease is believed to spread through feed, when cows eat
the contaminated tissue of other cattle. Humans can get a related
disease, variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease, in similar fashion - by
eating meat contaminated with mad cow. There have been more than 150
human deaths worldwide linked to the variant.
Two of the six confirmed mad cow cases in Canada have involved
animals that were infected after 1997, when a ban was instituted on
the use of cattle parts in feed for cattle, or other ruminants such
as sheep and goats.
The agency says Canada's food supply is safe, and the level of mad
cow disease in the national cattle herd is very low. Canada has an
estimated national herd of 17 million cattle.
U.S. Agriculture Department spokesman Ed Loyd said last week trade
was resumed with Canada with the assumption that more mad cow cases
would be found. Loyd said U.S. officials have "a high level of
confidence in the safeguards and mitigating measures in place in the
U.S. and Canada."
George Luterbach, an animal scientist with the Canadian Food
Inspection Agency, said the latest case should not have any
repercussions internationally.
"It is unwelcome news but not necessarily unexpected news,"
Luterbach said, adding "it should have little or no implications
internationally."
Having tested 60,000 cattle last year, Luberbach said the agency is
confident that mad cow is not a common in Canada or something that
is growing.
Shipments of live cattle to the United States were halted in 2003
after the first reported mad cow case in Canada. Trade in young
animals resumed last year, but there has been no word on when the
border may be reopened to older animals.
Hugh Lynch-Ftaunton, president of the 90,000-member Canadian
Cattlemen's Association, said some Asian and European countries may
wait to see the final report on the latest case before reopening
their borders to Canadian cattle.
"Some of the countries that are on the verge of dealing with us
differently will probably want to study the report on this and that
might slow it down marginally but I don't think it's going to be
make or break," Lynch-Ftaunton said.
Last month, Canada announced it was broadening restrictions on
animal feed in an effort to fight mad cow disease. The Agency
revealed measures, to be phased in over the next year, aimed at
keeping potentially risky cattle parts from all animal feed, not
just feed destined for cows.
The parts will also be banned from pet food and fertilizers to avoid
the risk of inadvertent cross-contamination of feed on farms and
ranches.
LENA'S COMMENT: They would still have you believe that it's
the feed that's the problem. Well, it sort of is as the feed does
not have the minerals and nutrients they need to keep the animal
kingdom healthy. If you look at all the wild animals that have the
disease and nobody is feeding them contaminated feed, could they be
wrong? One scientist has proven that it's the lack of minerals in
the food that causes not only mad cow but other diseases yet it's
too simple and not lucrative financially to be grasped and therefore

High Tylenol Doses Linked to Liver
Woes

CHICAGO (AP) - Healthy adults taking maximum doses of Tylenol
for two weeks had abnormal liver test results in a small study,
researchers found, raising concerns that even recommended
amounts of the popular painkiller might lead to liver damage.
In the study, 106 participants took four grams of Tylenol -
equivalent to eight extra-strength Tylenol tablets - each day
for two weeks. Some took Tylenol alone and some took it with an
opioid painkiller. Dummy pills were given to 39 others.
There were no alarming liver test results among the people who
took the placebos. But nearly 40 percent of people in all the
other groups had abnormal test results that would signal liver
damage, according to the study that appears in Wednesday's
Journal of the American Medical Association.
"I would urge the public not to exceed four grams a day. This is
a drug that has a rather narrow safety window," said a study
co-author, Dr. Neil Kaplowitz of the University of Southern
California.
Heavy drinkers should take no more than two grams daily,
Kaplowitz said.
Another co-author, Dr. Paul Watkins of the University of North
Carolina, said he's less worried than Kaplowitz, noting that
acetaminophen, the active ingredient in Tylenol, has been used
for 50 years and has a good safety record.
The maker of Tylenol, McNeil Consumer & Specialty
Pharmaceuticals, said its own research found much lower rates of
abnormal liver results. The company's studies tracked high-dose
users over longer periods than did the new study.
"It doesn't lead to liver disease and it usually resolves as
patients continue to take acetaminophen," said Dr. Edwin Kuffner,
senior director of medical affairs at McNeil.
The researchers had been hired by the drug company Purdue Pharma
LP, maker of the prescription painkiller OxyContin, to find out
why abnormal liver tests were showing up in people testing a
combination drug containing the acetaminophen and the opiate
hydrocodone.
Purdue Pharma stopped its hydrocodone study early because of the
abnormal liver tests. Researchers Watkins and Kaplowitz thought
they would find the culprit in hydrocodone's interaction with
acetaminophen.
"Our jaws dropped when we got the data," Watkins said. "It
doesn't have anything to do with the opiate. It's good ol',
garden-variety acetaminophen."
Acetaminophen is more popular than aspirin or ibuprofen. Each
week, one in five U.S. adults uses it for pain or fever, a 2002
survey found.
Acetaminophen is included in numerous over-the-counter and
prescription medications, making overdose possible as people
unwittingly combine drugs. Overdoses of acetaminophen are the
leading cause of acute liver failure.
"A week doesn't go by when I don't have to talk to someone about
how much they're taking," said Kathleen Besinque of the USC
School of Pharmacy.
Watkins said people considering switching painkillers should
know that others have their own side effects, such as internal
bleeding and stomach irritation.
New research under way at the University of North Carolina may
determine if acetaminophen's effect on the liver continues for
long-term, high-dose users, or if the body adapts, Watkins said.

Climate Change Evaporates
From G8 Agenda

ROME - At the last G8 summit, political leaders vowed to "act with
resolve and urgency" on climate change. A year on, global warming has
been sidelined by concerns on how the world can satisfy its growing
appetite for energy.
While analysts were not entirely convinced by Prime Minister Tony
Blair's bid to highlight climate change -- a fashionable issue in
Britain -- during his G8 presidency, they believe Russia has all but
dropped the issue.
"I don't think this year there's going to be any particular emphasis on
climate, I would be very positively surprised if there were," said
Benito Mueller, Senior Research Fellow at Britain's Oxford Institute for
Energy Studies.
Russia, chairing the Group of Eight for the first time and hosting a
summit starting July 15, has been ambivalent about global warming which
leaders at last year's G8 summit called "a serious and long-term
challenge that has the potential to affect every part of the planet".
Moscow's decision in 2004 to ratify the Kyoto Protocol saved the
greenhouse gas-limiting treaty from collapse, which looked likely when
the United States pulled out three years earlier.
But while that was a relief to the pro-Kyoto lobby, Russia is rarely
celebrated as the treaty's saviour. President Vladimir Putin once
remarked that a bit of global warming might not be that bad as people
"would have to spend less money on fur coats and other warm things".
Still, Russia eventually backed Kyoto, leaving the United States, which
emits around a quarter of the man-made greenhouse gas emissions, the
only G8 country not to have ratified.
DISASTROUS
EFFECTS
Greenhouse gases, like carbon dioxide (CO2), a by-product of burning
fossil fuels, trap heat in the atmosphere. Scientists say that if
emissions are not curbed, there will be disastrous effects, including
rising sea levels, droughts and floods.
Russia has made "energy security" the main theme of the July 15-17 St.
Petersburg summit. High oil prices and a stand-off between Russia and
its European customers this year over gas supplies have thrown the issue
to the top of the agenda.
Energy Minister Viktor Khristenko said the summit will "focus on the
search for tools to reduce global energy hazards", and climate change
will be part of that.
But an early draft of the summit declaration concentrates mostly on the
challenges of developing supplies of energy in a volatile market rather
than tackling the threat of global warming posed by an increasing use of
fossil fuels.
"We're back to the 1970s and 1980s when we just talked about security of
supply -- I thought we'd moved on from that," said Mueller.
The draft does encourage energy efficiency and renewable energy
technologies, but not enough to satisfy environmentalists who were
appalled to see the text promoting more development of fossil fuels
including coal and bitumen, both potentially major sources of CO2.
"It would be laughable if the focus were on how to increase fossil
fuels," said Jennifer Morgan, climate campaigner for WWF, formerly the
World Wildlife Fund.
Morgan said last year's summit had been a minor breakthrough in that all
G8 leaders -- including US President George W. Bush who pulled his
country out of Kyoto shortly after taking office in 2001 -- jointly said
the problem was urgent.
Another fear for the green lobby is that the summit could give a boost
to nuclear power, not least because Russia is keen to boost uranium
exports and because of the G8 countries, only Germany and Italy are
still opposed to the technology.
