Costs $400 billion each year, according to "Smoking and Health Review," (1992).

The American Lung Association says tobacco contains more than 4,000 chemicals, 60 of which causes cancer.

Diabetes Association Defends Cadbury Schweppes Deal

The American public health community is taking big dollars from big corporations.

Is the community pulling its punches in return for the cash?

That's the allegation from public interest groups like Commercial Alert.

Earlier this month, the group's executive director, Gary Ruskin, accused the American Diabetes Association (ADA) of taking corrupt payments from Cadbury Schweppes, after the candy and soda maker entered into a multimillion dollar deal with the ADA.

"Maybe the American Diabetes Association should rename itself the American Junk Food Association," Ruskin said. "What will it do for an encore? Start selling candy bars for M&M/Mars? If Cadbury Schweppes really wanted to reduce the incidence of obesity and diabetes, it would stop advertising its high-sugar products, and remove them from our nation's schools. This is just another attempt by a major junk food corporation to obfuscate its responsibility in the epidemic of obesity and diabetes in the United States. The American Diabetes Association should return this corrupt contribution to Cadbury Schweppes immediately."

Consumer group wants warning label on potato chips
Fri Jun 17, 2005
By Nichola Groom

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - A California consumer legal group is campaigning to require warning labels on potato chips, saying they contain a chemical known to cause cancer and state law requires the warnings.

The Environmental Law Foundation filed notices with the Golden State's attorney general on Thursday against Lay's potato chip maker PepsiCo Inc., Pringles maker Procter & Gamble Co., Cape Cod potato chip parent Lance Inc. and Kettle Chips maker Kettle Foods Inc.

The notices give the attorney general's office 60 days to take up the case on behalf of all Californians. If the state declines to pursue the matter, the group said in the documents that "it intends to bring suit in the public interest" against the companies.

Under California law, companies are required to warn consumers if their products contain known carcinogens.

The chemical in question, acrylamide, is formed when starchy foods are baked or fried at high temperatures. Acrylamide is listed by the California Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment as a chemical known to cause cancer.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has been studying the impact of acrylamide levels in food since 2002. On its Web site, the FDA said that, while the chemical is known to cause cancer in laboratory animals in high doses, it is "not clear whether acrylamide causes cancer in humans at the much lower levels found in food."

"At this point we're still trying to evaluate the effects of acrylamide," said FDA spokesman Mike Herndon.

PepsiCo unit Frito-Lay said in a statement that it has not yet received the notice from the ELF, but said its "food safety standards are very stringent and meet all federal and state regulations."

Pringles spokeswoman Kay Puryear said its products "are as safe as ever" and that Procter & Gamble has been "working to reduce the formation of acrylamide."

A Kettle Foods spokeswoman said the company would not comment on pending litigation.

Officials at Lance were not immediately available for comment.

According to the Oakland, California-based Environmental Law Foundation, tests it commissioned found levels of acrylamide in many of the nation's most popular potato chip brands far exceeded the levels requiring warning labels under California law.

Cape Cod Robust Russet: 910 times
Kettle Chips (lightly salted): 505 times
Kettle Chips (honey dijon): 495 times
Pringles Snack Stacks (pizza-flavored): 170 times
Lay's Baked: 150 times

Chew on that ...

Reuters June 17, 2005

LENA'S COMMENT: Of course the FDA is still trying to assess acrylamide... Other studies have already shown the detriment and they have to assess it further. Anything, even if it's a good food, spice, etc., with those huge amounts over the limit will make anyone ill... Who are they kidding? Not me or you only themselves or are dollars $$ involved here???

FOOD OF THE WEEK
~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~

Citrullis lanatus!

Found at road side stands, in gardens and stores in abundance this time of the year… As a child around Phoenix, where melon fields were abundant but is now houses, we use to walk to a field and pick a couple of melons, throw them in the canal then run home and wait to pick them out of the water and have them nice and cool, serving two purposes… Didn't have to carry them and they were cool enough to eat when we pulled them from the water…

Green on the outside and red or yellow on the inside! Nothing says summer like this subtly crunch, thirst quenching fruit. A nutritious food best to eat by itself. My husbands favorite summer fruit!

Although watermelons can now be found in the markets throughout the year, the season for watermelon is in the summer when they are sweet and of the best quality. More Watermelon was probably be eaten the week of July 4th than any other time in the U.S. It is almost a ritual in multitude of homes…

Watermelons are low in calories and very nutritious. Recent research suggests that lycopene, a powerful antioxidant, helps prevent some forms of cancer and cardiovascular disease. Research shows that consuming foods that contain lycopene are associated with a decreased risk of prostate and cervical cancer.

Watermelon is related to the cantaloupe, squash and pumpkin as well as some other plants that grow on ground vines. Watermelons can be round, oblong or spherical in shape and feature thick green rinds that are often spotted or striped. They range in size from a few pounds to upward of ninety pounds. The biggest watermelon grown according to the 1996 Guinness Book of World Records weighed in at 262 pounds!

Health Benefits

While the watermelon does not contain a large amount of nutrients it still is considered a healthy food! This delectable thirst-quencher may also help quench the inflammation that contributes to conditions like asthma, atherosclerosis, diabetes, colon cancer, and arthritis. According to research conducted at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, men who consumed a lycopene-rich diet were half as likely to suffer a heart attack as those who had little or no lycopene in their diets. Red meat watermelon is rich in lycopene, second only to the tomato.

Watermelon is also high in vitamin C and vitamin A, in the form of disease-fighting beta carotene.

Watermelon also contains potassium, which is known to help control blood pressure and possibly prevent strokes as well as necessary for a regular heart beat.

Watermelon is not a commonly allergenic food, is not included in the list of 20 foods that most frequently contain pesticide residues, and is also NOT KNOWN to contain goitrogens, oxalates, or purines.

Many new varieties of watermelons have been developed in recent years. Yellow and seedless types are finding an increasing share of the specialty watermelon market. Small excellent quality "icebox" melons are also becoming increasingly popular.

WATERMELON VARIETIES; Seedless yellow: Seedless red: Yellow flesh, seeded: Red flesh, seeded: Tiny heart only melons, red flesh:

"Seedless" marketing note: "Seedless" varieties may have some seeds, especially in the first fruits set if the plant is under moisture or temperature stress.

Choosing the right watermelon!

Look the watermelon over, choose a firm, symmetrical watermelon that is free of bruises, cuts and dents.

Lift it up - the watermelon should be heavy for its size. Watermelon is 92% water,  that accounts for most of its weight.

Turn it over - on the underside of the watermelon there should be a creamy yellow spot from where it sat on the ground and ripened in the sun.

Following these tips will help you pick the best watermelon available.

History

Originating in Africa, watermelons were first cultivated in Egypt where testaments to their legacy were recorded in hieroglyphics painted on building walls. The fruit was held is such regard that it was placed in the tombs of many Egyptian kings. It is not surprising that watermelon played such an important role in this country, and subsequently in countries in the Mediterranean region, since water was often in short supply in these areas, and people could depend upon watermelon for its thirst-quenching properties.

Watermelons were brought to China around the 10th century and then to the Western Hemisphere shortly after the discovery of the New World. In Russia, where much of the commercial supply of watermelons is grown, there is a popular wine made from this fruit. In addition to Russia, the leading commercial growers of watermelon include China, Turkey, Iran and the United States.

Tips for Preparing Watermelon:

Wash the watermelon before cutting it to prevent introducing germs into the melon on cutting. Due to its large size, you will probably not be able to run it under water in the sink. Instead, wash it with a wet cloth or paper towel.

Depending upon the size that you desire, there are many ways to cut a watermelon. The flesh can be sliced, cubed or scooped into balls. Watermelon is delicious to eat as is, while it also makes a delightful addition to a fruit salad. Jam, sorbet and juice are some nutritious and delicious things you can make with watermelon.

While many people are just accustomed to eating the juicy flesh of the watermelon, both the seeds and the rind are also edible.

My mother use to make a melon rind preserve that was interesting and tasty;

Ingredients:

For 4 lbs. (11 cups) of the melon rind, still containing some of the red meat, make a syrup of:
9 cups of sugar
8 cups water
4 lemons, sliced
4 tsps. stick cinnamon
4 tsps. cloves (tie spices in cheesecloth bag)

Directions:

Select melons with thick rinds. Peel off all green portion using only the white and red part of the rind. Cut into small dice. Soak in mild salt water overnight (1/2 cup salt to 1 gallon water). Drain, rinse and cook in clear water for about 30 minutes or until tender. Drain well.

Boil the syrup, lemon and spices 5 minutes before adding the rinds. Add rinds and cook until transparent and clear. (If desired, a few minutes before preserves are done add small amount of vegetable green or red food coloring to tint preserves.) Remove spice bag, pour into sterilized pint Jars and wash and seal each jar as filled.

Enjoy!
Lena

Doctors Limited in Rx Training
July 7, 2005

WASHINGTON (AP) - With abuse of prescription drugs growing rapidly, many doctors and pharmacists say they have received limited training in dealing with pain-relievers, stimulants, tranquilizers and other controlled prescription drugs.

One factor behind the growth is that people easily can get these drugs from doctors, friends, relatives and through the Internet, according to a study by the National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse at Columbia University.

Relying on various government reports, the study cited rapidly rising rates of abuse of prescription drugs, especially among teenagers.

About 15 million people in the U.S. abused controlled prescription drugs and the amount of abuse has gone up sharply over the past decade among all adults and especially among teens, according to the center's analysis of federal data on drug use.

Prescription drug abuse is defined in the study as the taking of prescription drugs not prescribed for the user or use of prescription drugs taken only for the experience or feeling it causes.

"We have an epidemic of abuse of painkillers," said Joseph Califano Jr., the center's chairman and president. "The problem with teens is a far more serious problem than anyone has ever realized."

Many doctors and pharmacists surveyed by the center said they have received only limited training in prescribing drugs.

Four in 10 doctors said they received no training in medical school on prescribing controlled substances; more than one-half received no training on identifying prescription drug abuse or addiction. Three-fourths said they had no training in medical school identifying diversion of prescription drugs for illicit purposes.

Four in 10 pharmacists say they have received no instruction since pharmacy school in dispensing prescription drugs. Almost one-half said they have received no instruction since pharmacy school in identifying prescription drug abuse or diversion of prescription drugs.

The separate polls of 979 physicians and 1,030 pharmacists were conducted during the summer of 2004 and each has a margin of error of plus or minus 3 percentage points.

Board: Teflon Cancer Risks Downplayed
Jun 29, 2005
By RANDALL CHASE

DOVER, Del. (AP) - A controversial chemical used by DuPont Co. (DD) to make the nonstick substance Teflon poses more of a cancer risk than indicated in a draft assessment by the Environmental Protection Agency, an independent review board has found.

The EPA stated earlier this year that its draft risk assessment of perfluorooctanoic acid and its salts found "suggestive evidence" of potential human carcinogenicity, based on animal studies.

In a draft report released Monday, the majority of members on an EPA scientific advisory board that reviewed the agency's report concluded that PFOA, also known as C-8, is "likely" to be carcinogenic to humans, and that the EPA should conduct cancer risk assessments for a variety of tumors found in mice and rats.

Environmentalists hailed the report, which will be discussed by EPA officials and SAB members in a public teleconference July 6, as an important step in holding government regulators and the Delaware-based chemical giant accountable.

The board's findings will increase pressure on the EPA to conduct human health risk assessments for liver, breast, pancreatic and testicular cancer, as well as PFOA's potentially toxic effects on the immune system, said Richard Wiles, senior vice president for the Environmental Working Group, an advocacy and research organization.

"This is contrary to the recommendation of the EPA staff and is a very important conclusion," said Wiles, adding that it would be very unlikely for the board to make any significant changes before issuing its final report for review by the EPA.

"This makes it hard for the EPA not to move forward aggressively," he said.

Enesta Jones, a spokeswoman for the EPA's Office of Prevention, Pesticides, and Toxic Substances, said agency officials had not reviewed the advisory board's report and do not comment on board recommendations until they are final.

"We're still working with industry and other people to gather data that will help us better understand PFOA," she said.

DuPont officials would not comment on the report but said in a prepared statement that human health and toxicology studies suggest that PFOA exposure does not cause cancer in humans and does not pose a health risk to the general public.

"To date, no human health effects are known to be caused by PFOA even in workers who have significantly higher exposure levels than the general population," the company said.

The company also said data from its employee health studies and those conducted by 3M Co. (MMM), which stopped manufacturing PFOA in 2000, "deserve greater consideration in the EPA's final risk assessment rather than relying solely on animal testing models."

DuPont's studies, which are still ongoing, have found elevated levels of total cholesterol and fats called triglycerides among workers exposed to PFOA, but no indication that PFOA was the cause of increased serum cholesterol and triglycerides.

While PFOA is used to make Teflon, it is not present in Teflon itself, which is applied to cookware, clothing, car parts and flooring. PFOA also is used to produce materials used in firefighting foam, phone cables and computer chips.

Shares of DuPont fell 25 cents to $44.69 in morning trading on the New York Stock Exchange.
