Tobacco is a mood-altering, addictive drug
that kills 500,000 Americans a year (200 million worldwide)
Costs $400 billion each year, according to "Smoking and Health
Review," (1992).
The American Lung Association says tobacco contains more than 4,000
chemicals, 60 of which causes cancer.
Some of the 'killers' are radioactivity, arsenic, ammonia, lead,
formaldehyde, nitrogen dioxide, cadmium, phenol, benzene and hydrogen

Greetings and thank you for subscribing!
I look out the window at the drying trees and
tundra and wonder how dry they are going to get before they succumb to
it? As it heats up around here, that's outside temperature, I stay in as
much as possible and wonder what happened to our nice moderate summers
of the past? The last two years has found us breaking records in that
department and that isn't where I think broken records are important...
Broken records should be in the health of every person who lives, not
heat! How is your health? Are you doing the most you can to assure you
have great health and longevity? If not do it now...

7-10 Percent Good Enough?
"In the world of cancer chemotherapy, progress is made in
small increments rather than giant leaps. The use of what is called
`adjuvant´
chemotherapy - that is, chemotherapy given after the surgical removal of
the tumor to assist in 'cleaning up' any possible remaining tumor cells
- often results is at best a disappointing 7-10 percent improvement in
overall survival."

Thought For The Day
=================
It's that time of the year to increase your intake
of vitamin B-1 (thiamine) and garlic. Both of these items make you
'stink' to a mosquito. Just stop by at your favorite supermarket or
health food shop and pick up some B-1 and garlic tabs. (Preferably the
ones that are odorless) Or alternatively, use more garlic in your daily
cooking plans. Be sure to take them every day. You will not stink to
your friends/family, but the little critters will avoid you...

Heart researchers at the
Cleveland Clinic Foundation have found that the popular
arthritis drugs Vioxx may increase the risk of heart attacks and
other cardiac side effects. As a result these researchers are
warning doctors to think twice about prescribing Vioxx to

reported in the Aug. 22, 2002 issue of The Journal of the

Blowin' in the Wind
If your child has asthma, don't be afraid to let them
play wind instruments if they want.
That's the advice of the Journal of Asthma.
When researchers studied a group of asthmatic teens who played wind
instruments and compared them with a group who played other instruments,
they found that playing the brasses or reeds offered a real benefit.
The wind players had fewer asthmatic episodes and felt more confident
about their ability to deal with the condition.
In fact, the journal concludes that playing a wind instrument may be
good long-term therapy for asthma.

FOOD OF THE WEEK
~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~
Citrullis lanatus!
Found at road side stands, in
gardens and stores in abundance this time of the year… As a child around
Phoenix, where melon fields were abundant but is now houses, we use to
walk to a field and pick a couple of melons, throw them in the canal
then run home and wait to pick them out of the water and have them nice
and cool, serving two purposes… Didn't have to carry them and they were
cool enough to eat when we pulled them from the water…
Green on the outside and red or
yellow on the inside! Nothing says summer like this subtly crunch,
thirst quenching fruit. A nutritious food best to eat by itself. My
husbands favorite summer fruit!
Although watermelons can now be
found in the markets throughout the year, the season for watermelon is
in the summer when they are sweet and of the best quality. More
Watermelon was probably be eaten the week of July 4th than any other
time in the U.S. It is almost a ritual in multitude of homes…
Watermelons are low in calories and
very nutritious. Recent research suggests that lycopene, a powerful
antioxidant, helps prevent some forms of cancer and cardiovascular
disease. Research shows that consuming foods that contain lycopene are
associated with a decreased risk of prostate and cervical cancer.
Watermelon is related to the
cantaloupe, squash and pumpkin as well as some other plants that grow on
ground vines. Watermelons can be round, oblong or spherical in shape and
feature thick green rinds that are often spotted or striped. They range
in size from a few pounds to upward of ninety pounds. The biggest
watermelon grown according to the 1996 Guinness Book of World Records
weighed in at 262 pounds!
Health Benefits
While the watermelon does not
contain a large amount of nutrients it still is considered a healthy
food! This delectable thirst-quencher may also help quench the
inflammation that contributes to conditions like asthma,
atherosclerosis, diabetes, colon cancer, and arthritis. According to
research conducted at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill,
men who consumed a lycopene-rich diet were half as likely to suffer a
heart attack as those who had little or no lycopene in their diets. Red
meat watermelon is rich in lycopene, second only to the tomato.
Watermelon is also high in vitamin C
and vitamin A, in the form of disease-fighting beta carotene.
Watermelon also contains potassium,
which is known to help control blood pressure and possibly prevent
strokes as well as necessary for a regular heart beat.
Watermelon is not a commonly
allergenic food, is not included in the list of 20 foods that most
frequently contain pesticide residues, and is also NOT KNOWN to contain
goitrogens, oxalates, or purines.
Many new varieties of watermelons
have been developed in recent years. Yellow and seedless types are
finding an increasing share of the specialty watermelon market. Small
excellent quality "icebox" melons are also becoming increasingly
popular.
WATERMELON VARIETIES;
Seedless yellow: Seedless red: Yellow flesh, seeded: Red flesh, seeded:
Tiny heart only melons, red flesh:
"Seedless" marketing note:
"Seedless" varieties may have some seeds, especially in the first fruits
set if the plant is under moisture or temperature stress.
Choosing the right watermelon!
Look the watermelon over,
choose a firm, symmetrical watermelon that is free of bruises, cuts and
dents.
Lift it up
- the watermelon should be heavy for its size. Watermelon is 92% water,
that accounts for most of its weight.
Turn it over
- on the underside of the watermelon there should be a creamy yellow
spot from where it sat on the ground and ripened in the sun.
Following these tips will help you
pick the best watermelon available.
History
Originating in Africa, watermelons
were first cultivated in Egypt where testaments to their legacy were
recorded in hieroglyphics painted on building walls. The fruit was held
is such regard that it was placed in the tombs of many Egyptian kings.
It is not surprising that watermelon played such an important role in
this country, and subsequently in countries in the Mediterranean region,
since water was often in short supply in these areas, and people could
depend upon watermelon for its thirst-quenching properties.
Watermelons were brought to China
around the 10th century and then to the Western Hemisphere shortly after
the discovery of the New World. In Russia, where much of the commercial
supply of watermelons is grown, there is a popular wine made from this
fruit. In addition to Russia, the leading commercial growers of
watermelon include China, Turkey, Iran and the United States.
Tips for Preparing Watermelon:
Wash the watermelon before cutting
it to prevent introducing germs into the melon on cutting. Due to its
large size, you will probably not be able to run it under water in the
sink. Instead, wash it with a wet cloth or paper towel.
Depending upon the size that you
desire, there are many ways to cut a watermelon. The flesh can be
sliced, cubed or scooped into balls. Watermelon is delicious to eat as
is, while it also makes a delightful addition to a fruit salad. Jam,
sorbet and juice are some nutritious and delicious things you can make
with watermelon.
While many people are just
accustomed to eating the juicy flesh of the watermelon, both the seeds
and the rind are also edible.
My mother use to make a melon
rind preserve that was interesting and tasty;
Ingredients:
For 4 lbs. (11 cups) of the melon
rind, still containing some of the red meat, make a syrup of:
9 cups of sugar
8 cups water
4 lemons, sliced
4 tsps. stick cinnamon
4 tsps. cloves (tie spices in cheesecloth bag)
Directions:
Select melons with thick rinds. Peel
off all green portion using only the white and red part of the rind. Cut
into small dice. Soak in mild salt water overnight (1/2 cup salt to 1
gallon water). Drain, rinse and cook in clear water for about 30 minutes
or until tender. Drain well.
Boil the syrup, lemon and spices 5
minutes before adding the rinds. Add rinds and cook until transparent
and clear. (If desired, a few minutes before preserves are done add
small amount of vegetable green or red food coloring to tint preserves.)
Remove spice bag, pour into sterilized pint Jars and wash and seal each
jar as filled.
Enjoy!

Health Screenings for Teflon to Start
Jul 8, 2005
By BRIAN FARKAS
CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) - Tens of thousands of Ohio and West
Virginia residents could be tested over the next year to
determine if their health has been affected by drinking water
containing a chemical used to make the nonstick substance
Teflon.
DuPont Co. (DD) agreed in February to pay for the screenings to
settle a class-action lawsuit. Teflon is one of the company's
most popular products; the substance can be found in everything
from cookware and clothing to car parts and flooring.
The tests will begin this month for residents who receive their
drinking water from six public water districts, or from private
wells within the districts, where concentrations of ammonium
perfluorooctanoate, also known as PFOA and C8, have been found.
The water supplies are near DuPont's Washington Works plant,
along the Ohio River near Parkersburg. About 80,000 residents
live in the districts, and it's hoped at least 60,000 will
participate in the screening.
"The more participants we have, the more valid the data is going
to be," said Dr. Paul Brooks, who will oversee the collection
process with retired hospital administrator Art Maher. Both were
appointed by the Wood County Circuit Court.
Residents will receive $150 to answer a health questionnaire. If
they agree to submit a blood sample, they will receive an
additional $250. Residents will walk out of the collection
centers with a check, Maher said.
Only residents who received the water for at least a year before
December 3, 2004, are eligible.
Each blood sample will be subjected to 51 tests, including those
that check for the presence of C8, organ function and cancer
markers. The screenings will not test for HIV, drugs or sexually
transmitted diseases.
DuPont agreed to the health screenings to settle a 2001 lawsuit
filed by residents who alleged the company intentionally
withheld and misrepresented information concerning the nature
and extent of the human health threat posed by C8 in drinking
water. About $70 million has been allocated for resident
payments and lab work.
Though used since World War II, C8's long-term effects on humans
are unknown.
A federal scientific review panel has said the chemical is
"likely" to be carcinogenic to humans, but DuPont officials have
disputed the draft report. The panel agreed earlier this week to
revise the draft to better reflect opposing viewpoints before
submitting it to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency by
July 20.
The goal is to complete the collection process in one year and
turn the information over to a court-appointed panel of three
epidemiologists, Maher said.
Based on the findings, DuPont could be required to spend another
$235 million to monitor the residents' health.
"If they don't find a link, that's the end of the thing," Brooks
said. "If they do, it goes into another process with other
scientists involved."
The settlement also called for DuPont to provide the six water
utilities with new treatment equipment to reduce the chemical in
water supplies at an estimated cost of $10 million.
In a separate matter, DuPont has set aside $15 million to settle
EPA complaints that the company failed to report information
over two decades about the potential environmental and human
health risks of the chemical, although no agreement has been
reached. In May, the company was served with a subpoena from a
federal grand jury in Washington, D.C., for documents related to
the chemical.

G8 Climate Declaration and Action Plan
July 11, 2005
GLENEAGLES, Scotland - The Group of Eight powers meeting in Scotland
declared on Friday that global warming required urgent action, but set
no measurable targets for reducing the greenhouse gases that trigger it
and so contribute to climate change.
Here are the key points of their communique:
-- The G8 acknowledge that human activity contributes in large part to
an increase in greenhouse gases that is linked to global warming.
-- They say existing science provides enough information to justify
acting now to "put ourselves on a path to slow and, as the science
justifies, stop and then reverse it the growth of greenhouse gases".
-- They pledge to "act with resolve and urgency" to reach common goals
that include reducing greenhouse gases, but without setting any
measurable target or timeframe.
-- They pledge to launch a wider dialogue on climate change, clean
energy and sustainable development, bringing in other major energy
consumers, to begin on Nov. 1.
-- They say it is in the world's interests to work in partnership with
major emerging economies -- a reference in particular to China and
India, which are expected to expand their greenhouse gas output rapidly
with economic growth.
-- The binding Kyoto Protocol on cutting greenhouse gases, signed by
seven of the G8 powers but termed economic suicide by US President
George W. Bush, is mentioned only in passing.
-- The draft says the United Nations is the appropriate forum to
negotiate future action on climate change.
-- A new Action Plan promises a range of measures to increase energy
efficiency in industry, buildings, appliances and transport; encourage
diversification of energy sources and use of renewable ones; promote
cleaner use of fossil fuels; and coordinate research and development.
