Tobacco is a mood-altering, addictive drug
that kills 500,000 Americans a year (200 million worldwide)
Costs $400 billion each year, according to "Smoking and Health
Review," (1992).
The American Lung Association says tobacco contains more than 4,000
chemicals, 60 of which causes cancer.
Some of the 'killers' are radioactivity, arsenic, ammonia, lead,
formaldehyde, nitrogen dioxide, cadmium, phenol, benzene and hydrogen
cyanide (the 'gas chamber' gas that poisons the respiratory enzymes)

Unhealthy Lifestyles Blamed For Bad Teeth in Adults
Poor childhood brushing and flossing habits are wearing thin both on
teeth and as an excuse for adults with bad teeth. A study involving 300
people revealed that the correlation between family history and future
teeth and gum problems became less of an issue as they grew older.
Smoking, poor social circumstances, infrequency of dental visits and
lack of tooth brushing were all cited as the main contributors to tooth
loss and decay.
Research showed that smoking caused tooth loss and decay by the way it
hindered blood flow to the gums.
Based on these findings experts recommend that people take a proactive
approach to teeth care and maintain healthy brushing and flossing habits
as a preventative measure to tooth and gum diseases. Another part of
their recommendation included quitting smoking.
The findings also confirmed the importance of continuing good teeth care
habits well after moving out of the home in order to maintain a healthy
set of teeth and positive self-image while entering the golden years.

Mass illness in the making!
Heart Patients Urged to Slash Cholesterol
By JAMIE STENGLE
DALLAS (AP) - Health officials are issuing a stern message to people who
have recently had a heart attack: Lower your "bad cholesterol" to
rock-bottom levels.
"The concept here is that lower is better with respect to cholesterol,"
said Dr. Steven Nissen, cardiologist at the Cleveland Clinic, who is
among those who have studied the issue. "It'll be hard to get there, but
we do have aggressive drugs."
New guidelines issued Monday for very high-risk heart patients call for
lowering their so-called bad cholesterol, LDL, to 70. The previous
guideline was 100.
LENA'S NOTE: A disaster in the making! With the heart already not
functioning properly they are going to throw the rest of the organs into
failure! Without sufficient cholesterol in the body the organs will fail
to function as they should and more problems than you can imagine will
happen! I beg of you to not listen to that number. Less than 200 in the
past was known to cause organ failure, yet they lowered it to 100 where
multitudes of people experienced muscle cramps and all over body pains
due to the medications. Now 70! REALLY BAD NEWS! With the history of
traditional medicine you will never hear of the problems that is
happening with their cholesterol lowering medications, they do not
accept that fact, but I am watching it happen all around me!

FOOD OF THE
WEEK
~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^
Red, Yellow, orange, purple Or Green are all great
and healthy food!
My mother always told me that at 18 months of age I ate one-half can of
lye, which she was using to make soap. This really ate the lining of my
esophagus and left my upper passages looking like a spiders web home.
During the time of my raw internal parts she would find me sitting in
the garden among the tomatoes eating ripe tomatoes and crying from the
pain, but she could not convince me that I should not eat them.
Tomatoes continue to be one of my favorite foods into this ripe old-age
of 67! I now know that they are very good for me and you! This week I am
covering tomatoes as they are in season in many places of the world and
we need to eat in season fruits and veggies as often as possible...
Tomatoes generally range in size from three-quarters of an inch in
diameter and a quarter of an ounce in weight to six inches in diameter
and two pounds. Tomatoes range in hue from white to red to purple, green
yellow and orange. Generally, the lighter colored tomatoes have a milder
taste. The red colored tomatoes get their red pigment due to the
lycopene content. More on lycopene later on?
Are tomatoes fruits or vegetables? If you're like most people,
you think tomatoes are vegetables. If you talk to a botanist, he or she
might insist that the tomato is a fruit because it contains seeds with
sweet pulp. However, a horticulturist would argue that the tomato plant
is a vegetable plant and not like fruits that are grown on trees (eg.
apple, peach). Both arguments are valid, and in a way, the answer is
that tomatoes are both a fruit and a vegetable.
Tomatoes are the second most consumed vegetable in North America. The
tomato is a treasure of nutrients, including Vitamin C, Vitamin A,
potassium, folic acid and more. Processed tomatoes have higher
levels of the nutrients simply because it is concentrated. North
Americans customarily eat a large volume of tomatoes and tomato products
that it ranks as No.1 among fruits and vegetables in the total amount of
nutrients they contribute to the diet.
Interestingly, second to oranges, tomatoes contribute a high amount of
Vitamin C in North American diets. Vitamin C has long been
known to prevent scurvy - a condition that is characterized by bleeding
gums and soreness in the joints. Vitamin C is also known to
function as an antioxidant in the human body. Studies have shown that it
may prevent certain degenerative diseases and common colds.
In addition, tomato consumption is listed as the fourth most important
source of vitamin A. In the body, vitamin A is converted from
sources beta-carotene and it is important for immune functions,
maintenance of the skin and tissue lining and vision.
Potassium is an essential nutrient that is important for normal
health maintenance and growth. It is required for movement of nutrients
across the cells in the body. A deficiency of potassium would lead to
muscle weakness, apathy, cramps and more. It is important for athletes
to maintain levels of potassium which is lost through sweating during an
event. Potassium levels can be easily maintained before or after the
event by eating foods or drinking fluids high in potassium.
History of the tomato
Tomatoes were first thought to be poison and were not to be eaten but
that idea lost it's wind and then became the food of necessity.
The tomato originated in the Andes Mountains in South America and was
first domesticated in Mexico by the Aztec people. After the Spanish
conquered Mexico in the early 1500s, they introduced it to southern
Europe, where it quickly became popular. The Italians named it "poma
amoris" meaning "apple of love". Similarly, the French also called it "pomme
d'amour". This name gave rise to the legend that the tomato was an
aphrodisiac. However, in colder climates, such as Canada, Great Britain
and parts of the United States, it was called the "wolf peach". This
unappealing name reflected its poor reputation and people's beliefs that
tomatoes were poisonous. Therefore, for many years, the tomato plant was
only grown for decorative purposes.
The most talked about food nutrient known, at this time in the tomato,
is Lycopene and being studied for further health benefits. In addition
to giving tomatoes their vibrant color, lycopene appears to protect
against diseases such as cancer and heart disease.
Lycopene is an antioxidant - it helps to counteract the harmful
effects of substances called free radicals, which are thought to
contribute to many chronic diseases and age-related processes in the
body.
Organically grown tomatoes contain the 35% to 70% more nutrient content
than the traditionally farm grown tomato.
The researchers surveyed the eating habits of over 47,000 men between
the ages of 40-75 for six years and found that the consumption of
tomatoes, tomato sauce, tomato juice and pizza was associated with a
reduced risk for developing prostate cancer. Researchers theorize that
lycopene, an antioxidant nutrient found in large amounts in tomatoes,
may be responsible for this possible protective effect.
I serve up hug plates of sliced fresh tomatoes with sliced cucumbers
splashed with a bit of rice vinegar, salt and pepper and the family
loves it. My dh grows our own organic tomatoes with which I make our
ketchup, tomato sauce and canned fresh tomatoes to go with us through
the winter. Try a small patch, as tomatoes are easily grown in your
flower bed!
Tomato season is in full swing here, if that is the case in your area go
out and get some great organically grown tomatoes for maximum health and
nutrient content.

Whooping Cough Making Dangerous Comeback
By LAURAN NEERGAARD
WASHINGTON (AP) - Whooping cough, one of those ancient scourges
that infant vaccination was meant to wipe out, is making a
dangerous comeback: It turns out the vaccine that babies get
starts wearing off by adolescence.
With outbreaks striking teenagers and adults, the government
soon will decide if it's time for booster shots against the
cough so violent it can break a rib. Last week, manufacturer
GlaxoSmithKline sought Food and Drug Administration permission
to sell a booster; competitor Aventis Pasteur isn't far behind.
While boosters are debated, however, don't lose sight of the
real risk: Whooping cough can kill newborns before they start
getting their vaccinations. And while older patients usually
recover, they can easily spread the disease, known medically as
pertussis, to infants.
"Parents who have very young infants need to get them vaccinated
as early as possible," advises Dr. Trudy Murphy of the Centers
for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta. Anyone who's
coughing should "avoid contact with young infants on the chance
this maybe is unrecognized pertussis."
Pertussis is a bacterial infection. Initial coldlike symptoms
lead to fits of 15 to 20 coughs in a row that leave patients
gasping for air - often, but not always, with a high-pitched
"whoop."
The incidence of pertussis plummeted in industrialized nations
after vaccination began in the 1940s. It now is on the rise
again globally.
Why isn't clear, but it's thought to be at least partly due to
waning immunity. Children get five doses of pertussis vaccine
between ages 2 months and 6 years. The protection begins to drop
five to 10 years after the last shot.
In the United States, a preliminary CDC count found more than
11,000 pertussis cases last year. That's up from 9,771 the
previous year, and the most recorded in three decades.
"We know that's an underestimate," Murphy said.
Experts say there may be 10 times as many cases, even more.
Studies suggest almost a quarter of people with coughs that last
longer than two weeks have undiagnosed pertussis, says Dr.
Kathryn Edwards of Vanderbilt University.
In fact, about a third of CDC-recorded cases are among
adolescents, which even health professionals may not realize. So
far this year, CDC has counted outbreaks, most involving teens,
in 11 states, including a Chicago-area one that has involved
more than 100 cases since March.
"I really thought it was a disease of the Depression," said
Monika Burke, a Philadelphia nurse who was stunned when her
15-year-old daughter, Sophia, caught whooping cough in May.
A doctor first diagnosed a viral infection. But Sophia was
having 30 or 40 coughing fits a day, occasionally so violent
they'd trigger vomiting. So the doctor prescribed antibiotics
and performed a blood test for pertussis. By the time test
results came back a week later, her 12-year-old brother was
sick, too.
Enter the booster debate. Proponents say booster shots for older
ages could prevent misery and school and work absences, plus
indirectly protect vulnerable infants: Since 1990, pertussis has
risen 72 percent among babies younger than 4 months, the age
when their vaccine protection begins to kick in.
Studies show that giving one-third of youngsters' pertussis
vaccine doses to teens and adults can safely boost waning
immunity. Already, boosters are offered in Canada, Germany,
France and Australia.
Here, Glaxo last week asked the FDA to approve its Boostrix
version for teens. The idea: People are supposed to get boosters
against two other diseases, tetanus and diphtheria, every
decade, including one for 11- to 18-year-olds. Boostrix simply
adds a pertussis booster to the scheduled adolescent shot.
Competitor Aventis Pasteur wants to target adults, too. It is
preparing to seek FDA approval to sell its Adacel
pertussis-tetanus-diphtheria booster to ages 11 through 64.
Once FDA makes sales decisions, expected early next year, a
CDC-appointed committee must recommend who should get whichever
shots are sold. Adolescents likely will be the first candidates,
noted Vanderbilt's Edwards. After all, they wouldn't require an
extra doctor's visit or needle prick.
Less is known about adult pertussis risk. Still, new parents and
infant caregivers and health workers are logical next choices
"so we can cocoon babies," she said. "It's the babies that could
die."
*** Lauran Neergaard covers health and medical issues for The
Associated Press in Washington.
LENA'S NOTE: It's election year again and sure "Government
soon will decide" with the help of the pharmaceutical company's
helping campaign finances grow and the healthy pot of money put
into the FDA to release their boosters! Whooping cough never killed or injured the
number of infants that the vaccines have! Children who have had
pertussis vaccine, just as measles and mumps continue, still come up with it each and every year.
But now that their vaccine failure is catching up to them, they
are working to make more money from it and injure or kill more
children rather than saying "We're failing at making
children safe!" In my three and
one-half years in the pediatric medical clinic, with seven
pediatrician, I never saw an infant die from pertussis, measles
or mumps but I
did see injuries and illnesses caused from the vaccines. We saw
about 200 children daily there and I think that is a goodly
number to look at and learn from... Keep Ionic Silver Water in

Biologists Wonder: Where Are the Pelicans?
By JAMES MacPHERSON
(AP) The only pelicans in Medina, N.D., on Wednesday, July 7, 2004, are
a plastic one in the towns park...
CHASE LAKE NATIONAL WILDLIFE REFUGE, N.D. (AP) - The air here this time
of year usually is filled with the grunts and squawks of thousands of
white pelicans and their chicks. The giant birds have made the refuge
their home for at least 100 years. Now their nesting grounds are quiet.
The pelicans are gone - and no one knows why.
Everybody, from biologists to bartenders, has a theory.
"Those wildlife agents scared them away," said Jake Bohl, a blacksmith
in Woodworth, a town of about 80 people 15 miles northeast of Chase
Lake. "That's my explanation."
The 4,385-acre refuge in central North Dakota had been known as the home
of the largest nesting colony of white pelicans in North America. The
nearly 28,000 birds that showed up to nest here in early April took off
in late May and early June, leaving their chicks and eggs behind.
Paul Guthmiller, an 85-year-old farmer, said he's seen pelicans in the
area since he was a child. He figures heavy rains and cool temperatures
in late May drove the birds away.
"I think there is too much water for them because of too much rain,"
Guthmiller said.
Normally, the pelicans stay at the refuge through September, raising
their young and feasting on crawfish, small fish and salamanders from
small ponds known as "prairie potholes." The area is filled with the
stench of droppings from the thousands of birds and their chicks.
Now, sweet-smelling wildflowers have taken hold in the guano-rich soil.
Wildlife officials have considered diseases, food supply, water quality,
weather, predators and other factors, but have found no satisfactory
explanation for the exodus, said Mick Erickson, the Chase Lake refuge
manager.
LENA'S NOTE: If you read Sundays' A Natural Environmental Health
Facts you will know where the Pelicans are! Hitting the pavement between
Phoenix and Yuma, thinking it's water. Looks like the poor creatures natural
mechanisms have crashed and is giving them false information!
