The pantry is full and ready for the onslaught of children and grandchildren that begins today. The weekend promises to be very busy and full of memory building happenings, the joy of having a large family! But I will still take my day of rest around all the commotion, so tomorrow will be a quiet day for all which will most likely include a picnic in the forest among the wind blowing in the trees and a stream trickling in the area that provides serenity and peace! Of course the kids will be exploring the forest and little creatures in the streams.

To Microwave or Not To Microwave?

Two Swiss researchers sequestered subjects under close scrutiny and blood tested them after randomly eating food that was either microwaved or conventionally cooked. They found all sorts of potentially nasty stuff:
(1) blood hemoglobin levels decreased significantly after ingesting microwaved foods, both total levels and the amount contained in each red blood cell;
(2) White blood cell levels tended to increase for no other reason than foods were microwaved;
(3) microwaves altered protein molecules;
(4) LDL cholesterol increased relative to HDL cholesterol.

Vaccinated Children in UK Still Getting Whooping Cough

(Ivanhoe Newswire) -- A new study conducted by the British Researchers reveals nearly 40 percent of school age children in the United Kingdom who have visited their doctor for a persistent cough actually show evidence of Bordetella pertussis -- despite being immunized. B. Pertussis, commonly known as whooping cough, is a highly contagious bacterial infection of the respiratory system that causes spasms of severe coughing and often appears as common ailments like a cold or the flu.

Currently, whooping cough is perceived as a disease afflicting mainly very young children who have not been immunized. However, whooping cough is seldom diagnosed due to the lack of specificity of clinical symptoms and signs. Current data suggests neither infection nor immunization will result in life-long immunity. Children commonly receive empirical treatment for asthma and may be referred for further investigation. These misdiagnoses often fail to provide a clinical reason for the cough, which can last for months.

In this study, researchers estimated the percentage of school age children in Oxfordshire, England, with a persistent cough who have evidence of a recent pertussis infection. Researchers were able to identify 172 children who had recently visited their family doctor for a cough lasting more than 14 days. Blood samples were taken to test for pertussis infection. In addition, parents and children completed a cough diary. Sixty-four children (37.2 percent) showed evidence of a recent pertussis infection. Of those 64 children, 55 (85.9 percent) had been fully immunized. Children with a pertussis infection were more likely than others to have whooping, vomiting and sputum (mucus) production.

These results suggest doctors treating school age children for a cough lasting two weeks or more should consider a diagnosis of whooping cough, even if the child has been previously immunized. A proper diagnosis of whooping cough, if caught early, can prevent inappropriate investigations and treatments.

US Panel Clears Way for Tougher Cleanup of Dioxin

WASHINGTON - The cancer-causing chemical dioxin -- present in some US water, soil, food supplies and most Americans' bodies -- should be cleaned up to a new, much higher standard, a US scientific panel reported on Tuesday.

Experts assembled by the National Academies' National Research Council confirmed many of the findings of a 2003 report on dioxin by the US Environmental Protection Agency, which found dioxin causes cancer and reproductive and immune-system disorders in humans.

Even though the EPA draft report was made public three years ago, its findings were not reflected in policy, letting a lower cleanup standard stay in force.

The National Academies panel said at a briefing that the EPA's recommended standards -- which are as much as 10 times more stringent than the current ones -- should be applied within a year or so, with no further data-gathering required.

"We're clearing the way for EPA to release this report," said panel chairman David Eaton, a professor at the University of Washington, Seattle. "Our recommendation is not to go back and start over."

Dioxin and related chemicals have raised concern since the 1970s, when they were found in the herbicide Agent Orange, used by US forces in the Vietnam War. These chemicals also are by-products of various industries, including paper and pulp production, incinerators and businesses that use chlorine.

Dioxin and dioxin-like compounds stay in the environment, allowing them to build up in the food chain. Most Americans ingest dioxin when they eat fatty foods including beef, pork, fish and dairy products, and others are exposed to the chemical on the job or by accident, the National Academies panel noted.

The Boston-based Center for Health, Environment and Justice hailed the National Academies report in a statement and accused industries that use chlorine of stalling enforcement of higher cleanup standards.

"The first health assessment of dioxin was in 1985," the center's executive director, Lois Gibbs, said in the statement. "Over the past 21 years, chlorine-based industries have demanded reviews, reassessments and analysis. ... Enough is enough. Let's get on with establishing health protective regulations."

LENA'S COMMENT: This sounds great and it would be if the report was allowed to stand as reported but as soon as this was reported a movement was started to stop cleanup efforts by our leaders saying that we needed more studies into the Dioxin dangers before they could decide how much needs to be cleaned up. Hence stopping the above report from being valid and making the chance for cleanup anytime in the near future practically nil. Big dollars at work and not for the average Joe!
