Greetings and thank you for
being an optin subscriber!
As the noise level picks up
with the grandchildren around the house I have to work harder to
concentrate and get this out with as few errors as possible, that's what
being 69 requires. When my four were young the noise was just part of
the back ground and my life decisions didn't take concentration to do
anything with the brain still in it's early phases and not so cluttered.
I didn't have the knowledge to keep my brain as healthy as I should have
so am having to make adjustments now... That is also exactly how our
health works! When we are young and energetic we think our health will
always be there and most fail to prepare for later life health! Then as
we age it requires much more to keep us healthy whereas if we had taken
precautions at a younger time in our life we would not be afflicted with
so many maladies. So take the precautions required to age gracefully and
healthfully!!! Enjoy the rest of your weekend!

Thimerosal banned from kids' vaccines Regulation also applies to
pregnant women but exception made for the rare but deadly Japanese
encephalitis virus

SACRAMENTO - Vaccines containing a mercury-based preservative are now
largely off-limits to children younger than 3 and pregnant women in
California.
The only exception to the new state law, which took effect Saturday, is
the vaccine against Japanese encephalitis virus, a deadly mosquito-borne
illness endemic to certain parts of Asia.
The new law, sponsored by Fran Pavley, D-Agoura Hills, was aimed at
reducing the risk of neurodevelopmental problems such as autism, which
many parents believe can be traced to exposure to thimerosal, a
substance used as a preservative in many vaccines.
Several large federal studies have shown no link between childhood
vaccines and autism, but additional research is ongoing.
The U.S. Public Health Service and the American Academy of Pediatrics in
1999 began to advocate the elimination of thimerosal from vaccines
because some infants who received them were exposed to mercury at levels
that exceeded Environmental Protection Agency guidelines.
Except for trace amounts allowable under the new law, thimerosal has
been removed childhood vaccines.
The flu vaccine had been an exception. But concerns about its safety
re-emerged in 2004, after the federal government recommended babies
between 6 months and 2 years be added to the list of those who should
get annual flu shots.
Aventis Pasteur, the company that manufactures the lion's share of flu
vaccine, has increased the supplies of its thimerosal-free version in
response to demand.
"Based on what we know, we anticipate there will be an adequate supply
of thimerosal-free flu vaccine for pregnant women and children under
three," said Department of Health Services spokesman Ken August.
The state has ordered 684,480 doses of flu vaccine to be distributed to
counties for the upcoming season. The total includes 50,000 doses of
thimerosal-free vaccine for children ages 1-3 and 15,000 doses for
pregnant women. In addition, the state ordered 10,000 doses of FluMist,
also thimerosal-free, for use in healthy people ages 5-49.
Aventis had opposed the Pavley bill, citing in a statement concerns that
the ban could "undermine public confidence in immunization and
ultimately deprive children of access to needed influenza vaccine."
In response to industry worries and related concerns cited by the
American Academy of Pediatrics, the legislation ultimately was amended
to give the industry more time to stock up on thimerosal-free flu
vaccine.
The new law also allows for exceptions when no other alternatives are
available or during public health emergencies.
August said Health and Human Services Secretary Kim Belshe issued an
exception for the Japanese encephalitis virus vaccine.
"Given the absence of a mercury-free vaccine against Japanese
encephalitis virus, and because the risk of fatal disease or brain
injury far exceed any risk of mercury in the vaccine, the secretary is
exercising her authority and temporarily exempting the vaccine from the
provision of the law for a 12-month period."
About 50,000 cases of the disease are reported annually in Asia. There
is no cure, and up to 25 percent of those infected die from the disease.
August said that California distributes about 32,000 doses of the
three-dose vaccine in annually. Last year, 19,000 went to the military
and the rest to people traveling to certain parts of Asia. It is unknown
how many of those doses went to very young children or pregnant women.
LENA'S COMMENT: The age rule seems a bit ridiculous as most
problems begin with the very first immunization and then builds from
there but I suspect even this ruling will not happen for a very long
time if ever as the courts will most likely tie this ruling up for
sometime to come as the drug industry will not stand still and let this
happen if they can prevent it or hold it up!

Aside from cutting our
salt, loading up on diuretics, and lowering BP to the point of
puddling in our shoes for heart health, the mainstream has embraced
another brilliant "solution" to cardiac problems...
Statin drugs.
These medications have become the world's most prescribed drugs in
the last 10 years or so, and are touted by many in the mainstream as
"lifesaving" - and a necessity in this ever-more-obese world.
But hmmm, these drugs are far from harmless, it seems (some of us, I
won't mention any names, have known this for a long time). Side
effects can include muscle weakness, pain, fatigue, and memory
deterioration...
In fact, it is exactly these symptoms that have been named in a pair
of lawsuits against Pfizer for side effects of their statin drug
Lipitor - at over $12 billion in annual sales, the world's
best-selling prescription medication. Filed simultaneously in New
York's State Supreme Court on Manhattan Island, the suits allege
that the drug (which is considered quite safe by the medical
mainstream) is insufficiently labeled, considering its possible side
effects.
Maybe it would be a good idea to add this little gem to the label:
"There is no scientific proof that lowering blood cholesterol
reduces the incidence of heart attacks." Just a suggestion. (As you
know, I'm not a troublemaker.) But while I'm making constructive
suggestions, I think they should consider renaming this wonderful
and life-saving drug, "Lipitort."
One of the plaintiffs, a mere 47 years old, claims the drug ruined
his life. He maintains that within weeks of being prescribed the
drug, he could no longer walk unassisted or lift his toddler off the
ground...
Although no one is suing for a death of any type, it'll be
interesting to see whether this story gets any play in the
mainstream sources in the wake of the Vioxx debacle. Of course, I'll
keep you posted as it develops.
In the meantime, if you want a healthy heart AND ample muscle-power,
get plenty of omega-3s from eggs, fish, and grass-fed beef - and
make sure you season it up with some pure sea salt.

"Abelmoschus esculentus" and
also "Hibiscus esculentus".
The discussion in a group last weekend as we sat in the gazebo was on
this very food. And all gamete of likes and dislikes for it came up? I
found in the group that there aren't usually too many who simply can
take it or leave it they seem to be that you either like or dislike it?
I personally love it raw, pickled, steamed or sautéed? We call it Okra!
Heart healthy, long pointy ended fuzzy, vegetable that can make you itch
when picking fresh! Known in various parts of the world as Okra, Ochro,
Okoro, Quimgombo, Quingumbo, Ladies Fingers, Gombo, Kopi Arab, Kacang
Bendi, Bhindi (S. Asia), Bendi (Malaysia), Bamia, Bamya or Bamieh
(middle east). Apparently Gumbo is Swahili for okra. In Portugal and
Angola, okra is known as Quiabo (plural: Quiabos). In Japan it is known
as okura. Patrick Taylor adds: "Okra has found its way to Taiwan, where
it's called "qiu kui" (pronounced cheeoh kway). Check out the potassium
and calcium content below, making them great heart and bone builders.
"Okra is found in its wild state on the alluvial banks of the Nile and
the Egyptians were the first to cultivate it in the basin of the Nile
(12th century BC). It was then introduced into North Africa to the
Mediterranean, the Balkans, and India. It arrived then in the Americas
at Brazil (1658), Dutch Guinea and at New Orleans before extending in
the United States and going up to Philadelphia in 1781." Or so some
say.
In the 1800's slaves from Africa used ground okra as a part of their
diet, and this apparently led to the use of ground okra seeds as a
coffee substitute by other southerners during the American Civil War
blockades of the 1860's. Even today, ground okra is used in West Africa
to make a "...local soup made from dried and ground okra, baobab leaves
or rosselle. Fish sometimes is added into it . I wasn't there so I don't
know that for sure?
Best and most tender when picked at approx. 3 inches in length. Picking
the pods while wet may darken the skin, but the taste is not affected.
We usually pick ours at mid day so they retain that bright green color.
Picking every other day means less that the goats get from getting tough
on us. Yes, my husbands pet goats get the tough ones and love them.
I grew up eating southern fried okra and I thought that was the only way
you should eat it. Then my husband came along with his garden, which
includes okra and one day, while he was giving me his weekly tour of his
pride, he pulled off a couple of pods of okra and handed one to me to
eat. Now I was sure that was a really dumb thing to do but he finally
convinced me and I have been a raw okra fan ever since. Try it; you'll
like it even if you've never liked okra before. I've seen it happen over
and over with visitors to his garden as he repeats what he did with me
to them. Our next favorite way of eating okra is steamed or boiled, both
are equally tasty. I sometimes add a little rice vinegar just for a
change in flavor. I also pickle several jars of okra every year. I make
them spicy as my grandchildren will then eat them. (Recipe at end of
article) If you cook okra in brass, iron or copper the pan will darken
almost black.

Raw will contain much more nutrients as they have not leached out!
The super fiber found in okra helps to stabilize blood sugar as it curbs
the rate at which sugar is absorbed from the intestinal tract. Okra not
only binds cholesterol but bile acid carrying toxins dumped into it by
the filtering liver. But it doesn't stop there... The okra fiber,
absorbing water and ensuring bulk in stools, helps prevent and improve
constipation. Fiber in general is helpful for this but okra is one of
the best, along with ground flax seed and psyllium. Unlike harsh wheat
bran, which can irritate or injure the intestinal tract, okra's mucilage
soothes, and okra facilitates elimination more comfortably by its
slippery characteristic that many people abhor. Making it great for
those with IBS?
This incredibly valuable vegetable not only binds excess cholesterol and
toxins (in bile acids) which cause numerous health problems if not
evacuated, but then assures easy passage out of the body of same. Unlike
some prescription and over-the-counter drugs for this, the veggie is
completely healthy, non-toxic, non-habit forming (except for the many
who greatly enjoy eating it), has no adverse side effects, is full of
nutrients, and is economical.
Okra can be frozen or pickled for storing.
Frozen:
Start with freshly picked okra. Wash, cut the stems off, being careful
not to cut into seed chamber, otherwise the seeds may spill out. Blanch
by putting into rapidly boiling water for about 3 minutes. Remove and
cool immediately by placing under cool running water. Pat dry, pack in
plastic bags, seal tightly and place in the freezer. Unblanched okra
will quickly lose its nutrient content, flavor and turn dark. Should
keep well up to a year.
Canned: Making spicy canned okra is simple and easy!
Lena's Pickled Spicy Okra:
Step 1:
Wash wide mouth pickling jars in dishwasher for maximum germ killing, or
in hot soapy dish water and rinse in boiling water.
Fill canning pot with water and begin heating on stove. (Any pot that
will hold pint size jars and can be covered with water, such as a
spaghetti cooker will work. You will need to put a rack of some sort in
the bottom so jars will not be in direct contact with bottom of pot.)
Step 2
Wash okra and trip stem. Do not cut into pod as seeds will fall out and
you will have nothing but slime?
Step 3
Pickling liquid:
2 cups white vinegar
4 cups purified/filtered water
1/3 cup sea salt
Put on stove and bring to boil. Stir until salt is dissolved. Keep hot
until ready to pour into jars.
Step 4
Put lids and seals in a pan of boiling water for 5 minutes immediately
before putting on jars.
Step 5
Fill hot jars with cleaned and dry okra.
Add 2 cloves fresh garlic, 1 jalapeno pepper sliced, more if you like
really hot. Or put 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper? 1/4 teaspoon dill seed
or 1 teaspoon or large sprig of fresh dill. 1 small or medium bay leaf.
Pour boiling pickling liquid over okra and spices, leaving about 1/2
inch at top. Wipe rim with moist paper towel or cloth. (Anything on
the rim will prevent sealing of jars, hence spoiled okra.) Put hot
lid and seal on jar.
Step 6
Put jars into canner, making sure water covers the tops and about 1/2
inch above. Boil for 10 minutes. Remove jars from water to a clean cloth
covered surface to cool. You may hear popping sounds coming from the
jars as they cool and sealing takes place, that is perfectly normal and
hoped for step.

Why Giving the Flu Vaccine During
Pregnancy Doesn't Make Any Sense
The CDC's Advisory Committee on
Immunization Practice (ACIP) recommends flu vaccination during
all trimesters of pregnancy.
However, according to a report published in the Journal of
American Physicians and Surgeons, this recommendation is
unjustified, unwise, and should be withdrawn.
Citing ACIP's own sources, as well as current literature, the
report based its conclusions on the following findings:
-Flu infection is rarely a threat during normal pregnancy.
-There is no "convincing evidence" that the flu vaccination is
effective during pregnancy.
-Studies have not adequately assessed the risk of flu
vaccination during pregnancy.
-Thimerosal, a mercury-based preservative present in most flu
vaccines, has been linked to neurodevelopmental disorders,
including autism, in humans.
-Thimerosal has been linked to a number of animal reproductive
toxicities including teratogenicity, mutagenicity and fetal
death.
The ACIP maintains that flu vaccinations are necessary because
influenza is more serious during pregnancy than at other times,
yet they cite only two scientific papers to support this
statement.
The report concluded that since routine administration of flu
vaccine during pregnancy is ill-advised and not supported by
scientific literature, and use of thimerosal during pregnancy
should be contraindicated, the ACIP's policy recommendation
should be withdrawn.

EPA Orders Dry-Cleaning
Chemical Phase-Out

WASHINGTON (AP) - Dry cleaners operating in residential buildings will
have to begin phasing out their use of a suspected cancer-causing
chemical.
The Environmental Protection Agency said Friday it was tightening rules
for the nation's 28,000 dry-cleaning businesses that use
perchloroethylene, or perc. The solvent has a sharp, sweet odor that
most people can easily smell - and affects the central nervous system.
Officials said the rule is an attempt to eliminate the risk, though
small, that people could get sick from smelling perc used at a dry
cleaning business located in a building where people live. EPA
spokeswoman Jennifer Wood called that risk preventable.
Dry cleaners in residential buildings must eliminate machines that use
the chemical as the machines wear out; they generally last about 15
years. By 2020, no dry cleaning machines in residential buildings will
be permitted to use it. Improvements also are required in detecting and
repairing leaks of perc, one of 187 substances EPA regulates as
hazardous air pollutants.
All those are known or suspected to cause cancer and other serious
health problems. EPA began its air toxics standards program in 1993, but
it has been updating those regulations to comply with a settlement with
the Sierra Club over the agency's missed deadlines.
EPA said dry cleaners have cut their perc emissions by about 15,000 tons
since the program began, by using other solvents and replacing older
dry-cleaning machines.
