Tobacco is a mood-altering, addictive drug
that kills 500,000 Americans a year (200 million worldwide)
Costs $400 billion each year, according to "Smoking and Health
Review," (1992).
The American Lung Association says tobacco contains more than 4,000
chemicals, 60 of which causes cancer.
Some of the 'killers' are radioactivity, arsenic, ammonia, lead,
formaldehyde, nitrogen dioxide, cadmium, phenol, benzene and hydrogen
cyanide (the 'gas chamber' gas that poisons the respiratory enzymes)

S.African Defies AIDS Through Diet, Will to Live
By Jonah Fisher
ASMARA, Eritrea (Reuters) - David Patient is no ordinary man. Diagnosed
HIV positive 21 years ago, the tanned South African has the confidence
of a man who knows that every day he defies medical odds just by being
alive.
He doesn't take anti-retroviral drugs and attributes his longevity to a
tough dietary regime and an unbending will to live.
Now at age 43 he's taking his message around Africa in the hope of
encouraging other HIV-positive people to do the same and offering ways
for those who are not infected to stay that way.
"But let's start where Africans are. At the moment what we're saying to
them is put this condom on, don't have children, don't prepare for your
old age and by the way the government isn't going to pay for your
medical care."
Nutrition forms the cornerstone of Patient's teaching. He says by that
improving their immune system HIV-positive people increase their life
span and reduce the chance of infecting partners.
"Every single person who is infected should wear a condom," he said.
"But in a married situation this isn't always practical."
Zinc, beta carotene and selenium all boost the immune system so
Patient's courses encourage people to find local produce which contains
high levels of those nutrients.
At present someone diagnosed as HIV-positive can hope to live about
eight years before developing full-blown AIDS. Patient says with proper
nutrition that can be extended to 12.
The United Nations estimates some 40 million people around the world are
infected with the disease and more than 25 million people have died from
it. Sub-Saharan Africa is the worst-affected region with about 26
million infected.
Patient has castigated African leaders for failing to take stronger
action on the issue.
They have been accused of moving too slowly to combat the epidemic by
failing to provide life-prolonging anti-retroviral drugs to their
citizens.
Though he has yet to need the drugs himself, Patient thinks they should
be made more widely available -- with one proviso.
"We can't be dishing out these highly toxic medicines without knowing
that the food conditions must exist for them to work properly," he said,
"Otherwise the virus mutates and we are just making the situation
worse."
Infected in the United States in 1983 as a consequence of what he
candidly calls his life as a "promiscuous little drugged out slut,"
Patient has fought for the rights of HIV/AIDS carriers all his adult
life.
Evicted from his home and then fired from his job as a consequence of
his HIV status, Patient went to court and won both times.
But while he has been able to win external fights and challenge
governments, the internal battle has been difficult.
In the first 10 years of the disease Patient saw more than a thousand of
his friends die, triggering a "tremendous survival guilt" that he was
still alive.
Medical researchers were equally intrigued and he has been asked to give
numerous samples to studies that aim to find common elements among HIV
survivors.
Now Patient divides his time between inspiring corporate clients and
conducting development seminars, mostly in Africa. With an autobiography
in the pipeline, is he surprised he's lasted this long?
"Truthfully no I'm not," he said. "Apart from smoking, I have done
everything possible to sustain my longevity. I'd have been pretty fed up
if I'd died."

Amazing Unexpected Relief
Having injured my back lifting a patient, I became
disabled and not wanting to undergo surgery, which I have seen fail more
than succeed, I had days I could hardly get up the stairs to my bedroom.
I used a TENS unit for the pain which didn't work very well. I had
become depressed and had feelings of worthlessness most of the time,
then a friend came for the weekend and saw the predicament I was in, and
gave me a loading dose of 9 Skeletal
Support, 4 Structural
Lubrication and 30 drops of
Life Transfusion Liquid Minerals. I was at my lowest at the time but
within an hour I was able to go up stairs and by the next morning was
feeling remarkable. That was three years ago and I have not used the
TENS unit since that day and I can go up and down stairs with no problem
and feel really worthwhile. Thanks to these marvelous Master Formulas.

Combination RA Drug Therapy Offers No Long-Term Benefits
Researchers found that a combination treatment with arthritis drugs
methotrexate and sulfasalazine was no more beneficial to patients with
early rheumatoid arthritis than either drug administered alone.
The combined therapy, given during the first year of disease onset, did
not influence inflammation, disability or structural changes in the long
term.

TODAY'S HEALTH TIP
~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~
In this century autoimmune diseases are running rampant! Just as many
reasons for those disease are rampant. Some of the most prominent are;
GUILLIAN-BARRE SYNDROME, an ascending paralysis in the entire
body, is thought to be caused by an autoimmune attack on the nerves.
Some believe a recent viral infection or vaccination may be responsible
for this autoimmune reaction. There is no true effective treatment; yet
again nutritional supplementation is giving very good responses.
MULTIPLE SCLEROSIS In which the immune system attacks the myelin
sheath around the nerve and causes an inflammatory response. Taking a
long time in most cases to diagnose leaving the patient in conflict and
living with fear and the unknown. Aspartame products have been traced to
being one of the biggest instigators of MS yet is being denied by the
traditional medical world.
Last but not the least, as it probably affects the most People -
FIBROMYALGIA
FMS (fibromyalgia syndrome) is a widespread musculoskeletal pain
and fatigue disorder for which the cause is still a mystery.
Fibromyalgia means pain in the muscles, ligaments and tendons--the
fibrous tissues in the body. FMS was once called fibrositis, and
fibromyositis implying that there was inflammation in the muscles, but
current research
proved that inflammation does not exist.
What does exist is;
CHRONIC PAIN- The pain of fibromyalgia has no boundaries. People
describe the pain as deep muscular aching, burning, throbbing, shooting
and stabbing. FATIGUE- This symptom can be mild in some patients and yet
incapacitating in others. SLEEP DISORDER - Most fibromyalgia patients have an associated
sleep disorder. IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome) - Constipation, diarrhea, frequent
abdominal pain, abdominal gas and nausea represent symptoms. CHRONIC HEADACHES - Recurrent migraine or tension-type headaches
are seen in about 50%. TMJD (Temporomandibular Joint Dysfunction Syndrome) ?
This syndrome causes tremendous face and head pain in one quarter of FMS
patients. MCS (Multiple Chemical Sensitivity Syndrome) ?
Sensitivities to odors, noise, bright lights, medications and various
foods is common in roughly 50%. ALSO - Painful menstrual periods (dysmenorrhea), chest pain,
morning stiffness, cognitive or memory impairment, numbness and tingling
sensations, muscle twitching, irritable bladder, the feeling of swollen
extremities, skin sensitivities, dry eyes and mouth, frequent changes in
vision, dizziness, and impaired coordination can occur.
KNOWN FACTS:
Patients who are suffering from any autoimmune condition have
significantly more free radicals to handle. And the key to preventing
oxidative stress is balance. You want to have enough antioxidants on
board to handle the number of free radicals the body is producing
by attacking itself. People who are suffering from any autoimmune
disease have a tremendous more amount of oxidative stress (imbalance in
the number of free radicals
to antioxidants) than the average person not afflicted.
CONFLICT IN TREATMENT for autoimmune conditions arise with different
points of view in treatment.
One viewpoint is that the immune system has to be destroyed in that
particular area (nerve) so as not to cause further problems. Nerve
blocks are used.
Another is; Very high amounts of antibiotics or other anti-inflammatory
drugs are used, creating even more free radicals, compounding the
problem.
Still another point of view is to try and rebuild and re-energize the
immune system, by giving it all the antioxidants it can take - more than
the basic amounts. That ensures optimum doses of all the nutrients
required in a form that the body can metabolize immediately. Moreover
they are balanced and complete...so no guessing is required.
The University of Missouri (Columbia) researchers analyzed 49
fibromyalgia studies and concluded that exercise, relaxation, and other
non-drug treatments are more effective than drugs for the condition.
Patients are often given antidepressants, muscle relaxants and NSAIDs
such as ibuprofen. Patients in non-drug therapies reported fewer pain
symptoms and less fatigue, less IBS, less confusion and mental
exhaustion.
I concur with Columbia, that is exactly how I choose to Treat my 30 year
bout with FMS, but only after twenty years of letting doctors use me as
a guinea pig of sorts. Then I turned
to nutritional, antioxidant, herbal treatments and exercise and finally
found relief!
The majority of autoimmune diseased people choose to follow the
traditional medical worlds modes and most have already or will end up in
a wheel chair, with very little relief on prescribed medications.
This conflict will continue throughout but my hope is that a few will
wake up and see that relief lies in natural treatment and not chemical!

FOOD OF THE
WEEK
~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^
Chelating Detoxing Food
This week's food is generally thought of as a condiment in most
societies, yet it is a very healthy and nutritious food. Also called an
herb! Herbs are food you know! And is either loved or hated and not much
in between.
A parsley-like herb used in a lot of Indian, Thai, Mexican and Central
American cuisine is known as Cilantro or coriander. My own opinion of
the taste of cilantro is that you either love it or hate it - there
doesn't seem to be many people that just like it. Considered part of the
carrot family? Now I don't know how they came to that conclusion but
everything I read says it? The seeds are called coriander and the leaves
cilantro.
Cilantro is also known as Mexican or Chinese parsley and can be used in
salads, soups, stews. My favorite use is chopped fresh cilantro with
sweet onions and put on everything in sight!
History:
Said to have originated in the southern parts of the Mediterranean.
Coriander has been found in Egyptian tombs dating back 3000 years. It is
even mentioned in the Bible in Exodus 16:31, where manna is described as
"small round and white like coriander seed." The ancient Hebrews
originally used cilantro root as the "bitter herb" in the symbolic
Passover meal. I wasn't there so I can't vouch for the accuracy of that!
Loaded with minerals; Calcium, Iron, Thiamin, Manganese, Magnesium,
Phosphorus, Niacin, Potassium, Pantothenic acid, Selenium and Sodium.
Then great antioxidants and vitamins such as Vitamin E, Vitamin B-6,
Zinc, Folate, Ash, Copper, riboflavin, Vitamin C, Vitamin B-12, Vitamin
A and Vitamin K as well as protein and loaded with fiber. Should
definitely be considered a great health food!
Known Medicinal Uses;
Cilantro is considered an aid to the digestive system. It is an
appetite stimulant and aids in the secretion of gastric juices. Also may
be used as a poultice (chopped seeds) and applied externally to relieve
painful joints and arthritis pain. The essential oils of the cilantro
leaves contain antibacterial properties and can be used as a fungicide.
The seeds are said to have cholesterol lowering properties. Since it is
a detoxing agent I would expect that to be very true. Asians used it as
an aphrodisiac during the Han dynasty (207 BC-200 AD). The Romans used
coriander with cumin and vinegar as a preservative, which they rubbed
into meat. Those famous "sugarplums that danced in children's head"
at Christmas time were originally sugar coated coriander, a treat that
offered a sweet start and then a spicy burst of flavor. Later the recipe
included small bits of fruit and became the confection we know today.
A theory from several natural physicians is: if you get rid of the heavy
metals in your body, you've removed the source of millions of free
radicals and the tissues of the body begin to heal themselves, sloughing
off the calcium that causes hardening of the arteries.
It just so happens that while Dr. Omura was testing for these toxic
metals, he noticed that mercury levels in the urine increased after one
consumed a healthy serving of Vietnamese soup. The soup contained
Chinese parsley, or as it is better known in the U.S. cilantro. Further
testing revealed that eating cilantro also increased the urinary
excretion of lead and aluminum. And when cilantro was used concurrently
with the antibiotics or natural antiviral agents and/or fatty acids,
Herpes Simplex types I & II or
Cytomegalovirus infections could be eliminated for good.
If you are one of those who hate cilantro but experience lots of
illnesses through out the year, it would be smart to give cilantro
another try and include it as part of your healthy food.
Here is a pesto recipe I use for spring cleaning of my body and a
rejuvenator during the hot months. Give it a try!
Cilantro Chelation Pesto
1 clove garlic
? cup almonds, cashews, sunflower seeds or other nuts
1 cup fresh cilantro
2 tablespoons lemon juice
1 tsp Liquid Minerals (order
online)
6 Tablespoons Virgin Olive Oil
Sea salt to taste
Put the cilantro and olive oil in blender and process until the cilantro
is chopped. Add the rest of the ingredients and process to a lumpy
paste. You may need to add a splash of hot water and scrape the side of
the blender. You can change the consistency by altering the amount of
olive oil and lemon juice, but keep the ratio 3:1 of oil and juice. It
freezes well so you can make several batches and freeze.
Mix with pasta, stuff a cherry tomato or use on crackers or toast for a
healthy detoxing food! Have Herpes or lots of viral infections; add a
Tablespoon of
Ionic Silver Water to the mix and you may just beat that problem!
Can you imagine eating and detoxing? Yes by adding cilantro to your
foods that's exactly what happens! Chelate your body by eating a couple
of teaspoons of cilantro a day for two weeks (mix it any way you wish),
then two or three times a year and be healthy!
Wishing you great health!

Drug-resistant 'superbug' traced to war in Iraq
By William Cole
Advertiser Military Writer
After a helicopter crash in Iraq, Chief Warrant Officer 3 Claude
Boushey Sr. underwent surgery in Germany for a broken back and
to insert a titanium rod into his left leg.
Moved later to Tripler Army Medical Center, the Schofield
Barracks pilot found out something else: He had tested positive
for antibiotic-resistant bacteria known as Acinetobacter
baumanii.
"I was kind of alarmed. I was like, what is it?" said Boushey, a
1983 Campbell High School graduate. "It took me a week just to
pronounce it."
The so-called superbug, a peculiarity of the Iraq war, can cause
infections, fever and pneumonia.
A spate of about 50 cases involving soldiers evacuated from Iraq
was noticed in 2003 aboard the Navy hospital ship Comfort. Two
Iraqi patients died of the infection.
None of the cases involved fighting in Afghanistan. The numbers
are noteworthy, said the International Society for Infectious
Diseases, since the infection was not noted in the 1991 Gulf
War.
Seven cases of acinetobacter have been recorded at Tripler for
Iraq war veterans, the first around April. A total of 136
Pacific-based soldiers serving in Iraq and Afghanistan have come
through Tripler for outpatient or inpatient care.
One acinetobacter patient was identified as having the bacteria
before arriving at Tripler. The six positives identified at the
hospital included four actual infections and two who had it on
their skin, but weren't infected, said Col. Susan Fraser, chief
of infectious diseases at Tripler.
"They (the cases) have come out of Iraq, and the other oddity is
it's very, very drug-resistant, and that's unusual," Fraser
said. The bacteria have been successfully treated with the
Carbapenem class of antibiotics. Amikacin and Polymixin B also
can be used, she said.
Fraser said the bacteria, believed to live in soil, are found
around the world.
"It's actually the type of bacteria that we see in hospitals ?
oftentimes in intensive-care units," Fraser said. "This
particular bacteria takes advantage of people who are sick,
people who are on ventilators for instance, so they've got
artificial breathing tubes, and they've got IVs stuck in all
different kind of veins."
What's different at Tripler, at least in the past three years
that Fraser has been there, is the drug resistance.
"That's the first time at least that I've seen (the
multiple-drug resistant variety)," she said.
Acinetobacter can reside harmlessly on the skin. Fraser said
that if cultures were taken from 100 people pulled off Waikiki
Beach, some of them would turn up positive. "It's not something
that the general public needs to be afraid of or scared of," she
said.
Why Iraq has been tied to positive tests for acinetobacter
infections and not Afghanistan is a mystery.
"None of us really know the answer to that question," she said.
Fraser said the information she received was that 15 percent of
the soldiers being screened at Walter Reed Army Medical Center
in Washington tested positive for the bacteria.
All soldiers returning from the battlefield for care at Tripler
now are screened for the bacteria.
Boushey, 38, and his co-pilot, Lt. Dwight Mears, 25,
crash-landed in their OH-58D on June 13 near Taji Air Base north
of Baghdad.
Mears said the observation helicopter experienced an engine
failure as the pair were traveling low and fast, and Boushey,
the more experienced pilot, guided the chopper to a swampy area.
"I credit him with steering us away from several lethal
obstacles, such as a house and telephone wires that we nearly
impacted," Mears said.
Mears, who also broke his back, is recovering in his hometown of
Corvallis, Ore. His father said he has not tested positive for
acinetobacter.
Study: Oceans Absorb Carbon Dioxide Excess
By RANDOLPH E. SCHMID
WASHINGTON (AP) - Nearly half the excess carbon dioxide spilled into the
air by humans over the past two centuries has been taken up by the
ocean, a study says. If that continues, it could damage the ability of
many ocean creatures to make their shells, says an accompanying report.
Carbon dioxide, produced by burning fossil fuels and other industrial
processes, is one of the most important "greenhouse" gasses that many
scientists fear may be causing global warming by trapping heat in the
Earth's atmosphere.
The atmosphere currently includes about 380 parts per million of carbon
dioxide, up from 280 parts per million in 1800, according to scientists.
But that accounts for only about half the CO2 released into the air in
that period, causing researchers to speculate about what had happened to
the rest.
A team led by Christopher L. Sabine of the National Oceanic and
Atmospheric Administration, reports in Friday's issue of the journal
Science that the missing gas is dissolved in the ocean.
"The ocean has removed 48 percent of the CO2 we have released to the
atmosphere from burning fossil fuels and cement manufacturing," Sabine
said after reviewing data gathered between 1989 and 1998 from three
major studies of the Atlantic, Pacific and Indian oceans. The studies
collected more than 72,000 ocean samples.
Overall, Sabine said, between 1800 and 1994 the oceans absorbed 118
billion metric tons of carbon that had been released into the air. A
metric ton is 2,205 pounds, indicating that during that period carbon
dissolved in the oceans about equaled the weight of 118 billion small
cars.
While some researchers have raised the possibility that increasing
forests and other plants could take up CO2, that appears not to have
been the case until recent years.
Over the past two centuries, land plants appear to have contributed CO2
to the air as forests were cut for farming, Sabine said. Only in the
last few decades, as reforestation has gotten under way, has that been
reversed with plants taking in more carbon dioxide than they release.
Taro Takahashi of Columbia University's Lamont-Daugherty Earth
Observatory notes in an accompanying commentary in Science that over
time, the amount of CO2 taken up by plants has been nearly balanced by
CO2 released by changes in land use patterns.
The oceans could continue absorbing the gas for centuries, Sabine said,
because ocean waters mix slowly and most of the CO2 is in near-surface
water.
An accompanying study by Richard A. Feely, also of NOAA's Pacific Marine
Environmental Laboratory in Seattle, notes that dissolving CO2 in water
forms an acid and that process can affect ocean life.
Feely and his research team found in laboratory tests that the water
near the ocean surface with added CO2 can cause shells of marine
animals, including corals, snails and plankton, to dissolve.
Carbon dioxide levels that may occur in the seas by the end of the
century could reduce the amount of calcium in shells by 25 percent to 45
percent, the researchers said.
That process hasn't yet been studied in the oceans, he noted, but the
lab findings indicate a need for concern.
The increasing CO2 could "compromise the fitness or the success" of
these animals, said Victoria J. Fabry of California State University at
San Marcos.
That might mean a change in the structure of the food chain, she said,
but not enough is known about the effects yet to say what that change
would be.
Data for the ocean CO2 study was collected in three research efforts:
the National Science Foundation-led World Ocean Circulation Experiment,
the Joint Global Ocean Flux Study, and NOAA's Ocean-Atmosphere Carbon
Exchange Study. The data from these studies were analyzed for the two
papers, by Sabine and Feely.
Sabine and Feely worked together on the studies and each is listed as a
co-author on the paper led by the other. Other researchers on their
teams came from the United States, South Korea, Australia, Canada,
Japan, Spain and Germany.
Funding for the studies came from NOAA, National Science Foundation,
Department of Energy and Pohang University of Science and Technology in
South Korea.
