Tobacco is a mood-altering, addictive drug
that kills 500,000 Americans a year (200 million worldwide)
Costs $400 billion each year, according to "Smoking and Health
Review," (1992).
The American Lung Association says tobacco contains more than 4,000
chemicals, 60 of which causes cancer.
Some of the 'killers' are radioactivity, arsenic, ammonia, lead,
formaldehyde, nitrogen dioxide, cadmium, phenol, benzene and hydrogen
cyanide (the 'gas chamber' gas that poisons the respiratory enzymes)

PHILADELPHIA - The brains of some of the people who received an
experimental vaccine against Alzheimer's disease have shrunk, but
scientists don't know whether it's an ominous sign that a promising
therapy has failed or an indication that the drug may be halting the
advance of the disease.
The trial began nearly three years ago when 360 Alzheimer's patients
received a vaccine designed to stimulate their immune systems to attack
a protein that clumps in the brain. But the trial stopped in February
2002 when 15 of the patients developed serious inflammation in the
brain.
Even researchers hoped that the vaccine would still help patients, a
sign that, at least in theory, the vaccine approach was on the right
track.
On Wednesday, scientists with the Irish company Elan Corp., which
developed the vaccine, presented research from brain scans showing
atrophy in some of the patients' brains, including in the hippocampus, a
region involved in memory. In general, brain atrophy is considered a
sign that brain cells are dying.
In total, the brains of a group of patients who responded to the vaccine
shrank about 3 percent, compared with 2 percent in a placebo group,
according to research presented at the ninth International Conference on
Alzheimer's Disease and Related Disorders of the Alzheimer's
Association.
One possible explanation is that beta-amyloid, a protein that many
researchers think causes Alzheimer's, was being cleared from the brain.
"There could be all sorts of reasons behind" the brain shrinkage, said
Dale Schenk, Elan's chief scientific officer. "It's not necessarily a
bad thing, and it could be a good thing."
But some researchers said the brain atrophy was not a good sign and
expressed frustration with the lack of data on how all the patients in
the trial were doing.
"Where is the data? It's dribbling out in bits and pieces," said Peter
Davies, a professor in the department of pathology and neuroscience at
the Albert Einstein College of Medicine.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY!
=======================
Increase intake of vitamins C and B-6, as well as
pantothenic acid. Vitamin C thins the synovial fluid and helps joints
move more easily. Increase calcium intake to help keep bones dense.
Avoid caffeine drinks (coffee, tea, colas) because They lead to adrenal
gland fatigue and sugar in-balance. Use mild diuretics, such as birch
leaf tea, horse tail, golden rod and agrimony, to stimulate the kidneys
.Not surprisingly, healthy eating for those with joint/bone problems
aligns with recommendations for healthy eating for others: plenty of
fresh vegetables, carbohydrates high in fiber, and a low fat-intake
(20-30 percent of the daily calories

HERBS SHOW BETTER CONTROL THAN DIABETES PRESCRIBED DRUGS!
Sixty-nine different herbal medicines were tested in the included
trials, which compared herbal medicines with placebo, hypoglycaemic
drugs, or herbal medicines plus hypoglycaemic drugs. Compared with
placebo, Holy basil leaves, Xianzhen Pian, Qidan Tongmai, traditional
Chinese formulae (TCT), Huoxue Jiangtang Pingzhi, and Inolter showed
significantly hypoglycaemic response.
Compared with hypoglycaemic drugs including glibenclamide, tolbutamide,
or gliclazide, seven herbal medicines demonstrated a significant better
metabolic control, including Bushen Jiangtang Tang, Composite
Trichosanthis, Jiangtang Kang, Ketang Ling, Shenqi Jiangtang Yin, Xiaoke
Tang, and Yishen Huoxue Tiaogan. In 29 trials that evaluated herbal
medicines combined with hypoglycaemic drugs, 15 different herbal
preparations showed additional better effects than hypoglycaemic drugs
monotherapy. Two herbal therapies combined with diet and behaviour
change showed better hypoglycaemic effects than diet and behaviour
change alone. No serious adverse effects from the herbal medicines were
reported.

New Web Site Tracks Hospital Quality!
Curious about the quality of care you'll receive at a particular
hospital or clinic? A new web database can help you search and compare
information on up to 16,000 hospitals and clinics.
http://www.jcaho.org/quality+check/index.htm
LENA'S NOTE: This site is being marketed as the place to look to
find out if your hospital is good or bad, but falls really short in that
department. I certainly didn't find any kind of quality assurance in my
area and you may not as well...All it tells me is the hospital here is
accredited. Well since this site is backed by the JCAHO I'm not real
sure they can even be objective about it. They would have to have such
grievous errors that the world would know about it before they withdraw
or allow accreditation.

FOOD OF THE
WEEK
~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^
The Root So Many Hate!
My husband brought in these beautiful roots from the garden last week,
which we love fresh sliced and eaten raw or the greens cooked with a
dash of rice vinegar added and the root sliced and cooked crunchy
tender. This particular root is not a very popular root and most kids
will turn up their noses at them just from the smell but are packed with
nutrients. That root being Turnips!
Although turnips are usually a spring or fall crop we seem to continue
to have a large number growing in our garden that are just as tasty as
ever.
Turnips and rutabagas are among the most commonly grown and widely
adapted root crops. They are members of the Cruciferae or mustard family
and belong to the genus Brassica. Turnips are (Brassica rapa) and
rutabagas are (Brassica napobrassica). The two are similar in plant size
and general confused as to which is which. You can tell the differences
as turnip roots generally have little or no neck and a distinct taproot,
while rutabaga roots are often more elongated and have a thick, leafy
neck and roots originating from the underside of the edible root as well
as from the taproot.
Good-quality turnips will be very firm, smooth-skinned and heavy for
their size. The coloring will be light-purple on the top fading to
bright-white at the bottom. Avoid turnips that are soft, spongy,
blemished with brown spots, cut or lightweight for its size.
The healthy nutrients gained when eating turnips;
Heavy in fiber content, which is needed to keep the intestinal tract
working properly and healthy flora thriving. Good healthy nutrients
include the minerals; Calcium, Iron, Magnesium, phosphorus, Potassium,
Sodium, Zinc, Copper, Manganese and Selenium. Vitamins are; Vitamin C,
Riboflavin, Niacin, Pantothenic acid, B-6, Folate, Folic acid, B-12,
Vitamin A, Retinol and Vitamin E.
Turnip green tops are loaded with nutrients but not usually taken from
full grown roots as they will be tough and require a much longer cooking
time and a lot of flavoring to mask the bitter taste. Greens are usually
picked for eating before the roots develop into full grown bulbs. Turnip
greens are really too tough and strong to eat raw and will need to be
cooked.
Fooling Turnip Haters Recipe
2 pounds fresh turnip roots
1 fresh apple (optional)
2 or 3 tablespoons margarine
1 tablespoon sugar
Salt and pepper to taste
First peel the turnips with a vegetable peeler. Peel the apple too if
you like, but it isn't necessary, unless he skin is really ugly. Chop
or slice the turnips, (and the apple) into the chunks the right size for
eating. Fill a big pot half full of water. Add the turnips, apple (if
you're using it), the margarine, sugar and salt and pepper as you like.
Cover the pot and simmer on the back of the stove for about 20 minutes,
or until the turnip chunks are tender to your preference. Serve hot.
They will never know they are eating turnips.
Root vegetables are usually very nutritious and health builders, so go
out and eat them knowing you are getting healthier for it.

Sweet Misery: The Horrors of Aspartame
Revealed in Documentary
The new documentary, Sweet Misery: A Poisoned World, thoroughly
examines a hot-button subject many consider to be imaginary: the
toxicity of aspartame. This man-made sweetener is certainly a
fact of life and hard to avoid. Aspartame is found in more than
5,000 food products, including diet soft drinks and snacks like
puddings.
Sweet Misery starts with filmmaker and narrator Cory Brackett's
moving story about how she discovered aspartame's effect on her
health was affecting her fight with multiple sclerosis. Once she
stopped using aspartame-sweetened products, her symptoms went
away almost by magic.
But that's just the beginning of Brackett's journey across the
United States to learn more about the devastating effects of
aspartame from a laundry list of well-known medical experts,
including Dr. Russell Blaylock and Dr. Betty Martini.
Martini is the director of Mission Possible, an Atlanta-based
non-profit group that works to spread the word about the dangers
of aspartame as a toxic poison, unfit for human consumption and
a slow neurotoxin that's especially bad for diabetics.
In addition to the experts, the filmmakers use archival footage
from G.D. Searle and federal officials to describe the amount of
propaganda and "dirty tricks" big business used to get aspartame
on the market.
Some of the most moving moments were heartfelt interviews
sprinkled in between the scientific data with some of the
victims of aspartame. One victim Brackett interviewed suffers in
a different and more excruciating way than most: This
middle-aged mother and spouse is serving a life sentence for
allegedly poisoning her late spouse, although many of the health
signs point to her late husband's bad reaction to aspartame.
Another key interview is Brackett's fireside chat with Arthur
Evangelista, a former Food and Drug Administration investigator,
who exposes how far major conglomerates went to legalize the use
of aspartame in the United States, and the resulting domino
effect on its use in other countries.
Herbicides: Bad News for Weeds .. And Drinking Water
By Brian Cronin, Director of AquaMD
For many of us, summer is the time to wield our "green thumbs." Whether
toiling in the yard, garden or flowerbed, we don't have to look very far
to find our familiar nemesis: the weed.
Unfortunately, we usually rely on chemical warfare when battling these
invasive and unwanted plants, grasses and weeds. Our five-gallon spray
bottles of weed killer and 30-pound bags of lawn herbicides take out
more than just dandelions and crab grass--they can poison our drinking
water.
Herbicides may be an effective means to beautify our lawns and gardens,
but the real cost often goes by unnoticed. Even the fertilizers we apply
to our lawns to encourage growth are harmful, and will run off into
streams, lakes and our water supplies. This can increase the nitrate and
phosphorous levels drastically. Close to a billion pounds of herbicides
are dumped in the United States each year--at a cost of well over $5
billion. Agricultural, industrial, commercial and governmental
application accounts for about 90 percent of all herbicide use.
Individual usage in homes and gardens makes up the rest. However,
homeowners apply three to six times more chemicals per acre than the
average agricultural user.
Health Effects of Herbicides
A national health and nutrition study conducted by the Center for
Disease Control found levels of the herbicide 2,4-D in 12 percent of a
sample of 1,000 adults. This common weed killer contaminates both
surface and groundwater and has repeatedly been linked with non-hodgkin's
lymphoma, according to medical studies conducted in the United States,
Canada and Europe. A common ingredient in many lawn care products, 2,4-D
is a known endocrine disruptor, and can block hormone distribution and
cause glandular breakdown. It is linked to immune system damage, birth
defects and reproductive issues.
The long-term health impact from herbicide and pesticide poisoning are
not yet fully understood. Health experts find it very difficult to
isolate all the potentially harmful contaminants that a person is
exposed to over the long term.
As with the millions of pounds of commercial-grade pesticides applied
every day in this country, these toxic herbicides will eventually end up
in our water supply. But here's the really scary thing: due to
regulatory red tape and general bureaucracy, many of these dangerous
pollutants are classified as "unregulated contaminants." This means
there are no national legal standards to keep them out of our drinking
water. Without EPA standards, water companies are not legally required
to test for a specific contaminant (Click
http://www.epa.gov/safewater/dw_unregcontaminants.html for the
EPA's list of unregulated water contaminants).
As most herbicides are regulated in measured in micrograms (parts per
billion), these contaminants are so toxic that even tiny traces could be
dangerous to your family's health. It is impossible to detect even
dangerous levels of these contaminants with our senses of taste, smell
or sight.
