Greetings and thank you for

I am thoroughly
enjoying the rain showers that we are having, although some areas are

Flesh-Eating Bacteria

HOUSTON (AP) - A Nacogdoches man was in critical but stable condition
after three surgeries aimed at saving him from a flesh-eating bacteria
that infected him during a swim off the coast of Galveston County.
Steve Gilpatrick, 58, was diagnosed with necrotizing fasciitis, a
tissue-destroying disease caused by a bacterium called Vibrio vulnificus,
when he took ill three days after swimming during a July 8 fishing trip
at Crystal Beach.
Gilpatrick's physician, Dr. David Herndon, the chief of burn services
and professor of surgery at the University of Texas Medical Branch in
Galveston, said Tuesday the situation is life-threatening because the
infection spread to Gilpatrick's blood. Gilpatrick is suffering from
multiple organ failure and doctors are trying to save his leg.
"I've heard of flesh-eating bacteria, but it always seemed so far away,"
said his wife, Linda Gilpatrick. "It's not. It's here."
The Gilpatricks regularly vacation in Galveston each summer, she said.
According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the
bacterium Vibrio vulnificus thrives during summer months in the warm
waters of the Gulf of Mexico. Swimmers with weakened immune systems,
such as cancer patients or people with liver disease, are most at risk.
A point of entry, such as an open wound, allows the bacteria into the
body.
Gilpatrick is diabetic and had an ulcer on his lower leg when he went
swimming. His wife said he believed the sore was nearly healed. His leg
became infected three days later and he began running a high fever.
"We figured he had some type of infection," Linda Gilpatrick said. "But
we didn't, of course, realize the extent of it."
The CDC says most cases of Vibrio vulnificus occur along the Gulf Coast,
but it's rare. In Texas, there were 22 cases of the infection reported
in 2006, with at least seven caused by water contact, according to the
Texas Department of State Health Services.
People can also be infected by eating contaminated seafood. Raw
shellfish, particularly oysters, pose the greatest risk, according to
CDC. The bacterium causes nearly all seafood-related deaths in the
United States, the agency says.
Symptoms of the disease include vomiting, diarrhea and abdominal pain.
When it infects the bloodstream, it can cause fever, decreased blood
pressure and blistering skin lesions.
Dr. Robert Atmar, a professor and infectious disease specialist at
Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, said seafood-eaters should be
aware of the infection risk, but healthy swimmers shouldn't worry.
"I wouldn't alter (swimming) activities based on this, if you're
otherwise healthy," he said. "People who have chronic illnesses like
diabetes or steroids or cancer or chronic liver disease, if they have
open wounds or sores, shouldn't go wading in the Gulf during the
summer."

iceburge, so to speak and couldn't happen if antibiotic usage wasn't so
rampant and mutating all the mega bacteria aka Vibrio vulnificus aka
necrotizing fasciitis aka antibiotic resistant staph infection.

The Claim: Green Potatoes
Are Poisonous

It sounds like a joke, or perhaps just an urban legend that grew out of Dr.
Seuss's "Green Eggs and Ham." But food scientists say this one is no myth. The
reality is that green potatoes contain high levels of a toxin, solanine, which
can cause nausea, headaches and neurological problems.
Potatoes naturally produce small amounts of solanine as a defense against
insects, but the levels increase with prolonged exposure to light and warm
temperatures.
The green color is actually caused by high levels of chlorophyll, which by
itself is harmless. But it is also a sign that levels of solanine, which is
produced at the same time as chlorophyll, have increased as well.
According to a recent report by Alexander Pavlista, a professor of agronomy and
horticulture at the University of Nebraska, Lincoln, a 100-pound person would
have to eat about 16 ounces of a fully green potato to get sick. That is the
weight of a large baked potato.
The report noted that most green potatoes never reach the market. Still, to
avoid the development of solanine, it is best to store potatoes in cool, dimly
lit areas, and to cut away green areas before eating.
Another good rule: if it tastes bitter, don?t eat it. Unlike Dr. Seuss?s entree,
this green meal would not have a happy ending.

FDA ANNOUNCES
PLAN TO ELIMINATE VITAMIN COMPANIES

The FDA, emboldened by its transformation into a drug company,
has embarked upon an anti-American plan of interfering with
business and intentionally eliminating various dietary
supplement companies from the market. The FDA announcement came
on Friday, June 22, 2007 under the guise of a final rule for
dietary supplement good manufacturing practices (CGMPs). Within
this 800 page rule the FDA states, "We find that this final
rule will have a significant economic impact on a substantial
number of small entities.... Establishments with above average
costs, and even establishments with average costs, could be hard
pressed to continue to operate. Some of these may decide it is
too costly and either change product lines or go out of
business.... 140 very small [less than 20 employees] and 32
small dietary supplement manufacturers [less than 500 employees]
will be at risk of going out of business.... costs per
establishment are proportionally higher for very small than for
large establishments....The regulatory costs of this final rule
will also discourage new small businesses from entering the
industry."
This FDA rule will directly raise the price of dietary
supplements for all consumers. The FDA acknowledges this and
says "We expect that the majority of these costs will be
borne by consumers of dietary supplements, who will likely
respond to the increase in prices by reducing consumption."
Thus, the FDA is intentionally seeking to shrink the size of the
dietary supplement industry and reduce the influence of safe and
effective options to improve the dreadful trend in the health of
Americans. The goal is to leave toxic drugs as the primary
health option.
Independent analysis of this FDA rule has placed cost of
compliance at 10 fold what the FDA estimates with as many as 50%
of small companies unable to comply.
The gutless cowards of Congress, a majority of whom are on the
Big Pharma payroll or will be on it once they leave Congress,
have delegated their lawmaking powers granted by the U.S.
Constitution to a bunch of Big Pharma-friendly unelected
bureaucrats at the FDA, who are in turn using this power to
undermine free commerce and help Big Pharma eliminate
competition from the market. This is the behavior of a
government in tyranny, inviting a revolution by the people. It
is noteworthy that fascist governments of the past have
eliminated health freedom and health options as a necessary
condition to enslave and brainwash a population. Congress has
delegated its responsibility to the people to such an extent
that over half the laws in this country are now concocted by
unelected bureaucrats with vested interests.
A Vehicle for Unprecedented Harassment
Any company that can afford to comply with the costs and
regulations of this new FDA rule can be targeted and eliminated
at will by the FDA. In essence, the FDA is seeking to make the
dietary supplement industry document every phase of production,
including expensive testing at multiple points in the production
process. Massive recordkeeping will be required, including all
customer complaints and returns for any reason! This is utterly
draconian and unnecessary interference and burden to free
commerce. It is completely Anti-American. No doubt, the FDA will
impose user fees as an additional charge so that FDA agents will
have the funding required to enforce the regulations. Under the
new rule any flaw in bookkeeping can result in a company's
products being declared adulterated, allowing the FDA to remove
them from the market even though nothing is wrong with them! A
company can then be forced out of business because they won't be
able to sell any products to raise the money to comply. The
rules are so complex and vague that the FDA can selectively
target any company it chooses, even those attempting to comply
in good faith.
The FDA is doing this under the pretense of improved consumer
safety. Consumer safety could readily be guaranteed by simply
having all companies test their final products for purity and
potency. Instead of this simple approach the FDA has gone to the
extreme of burdening the dietary supplement industry with
regulations in excess of the drug industry! Supplements are
foods, not drugs. The food industry couldn't begin to comply
with these FDA rules, even though food contamination is far more
dangerous to health than dietary supplements.
The FDA intends to phase this rule in over the next three years.
This means that within five years half the industry and many of
the health options individuals rely on will either be gone or
significantly more expensive.
LENA'S COMMENT: I wouldn't use such language as this
writer but the truth of the message is right on the money and if
you didn't protest when asked to protest the new ruling you will
have to shoulder some of the blame for losing your freedom to
use supplements and not have the ability to truly treat health
problems versus treat symptoms that only bring on more serious
health problems later...

Chlorine Factories:
Still Major Sources of Mercury Pollution
2005 study found that chlorine producing
plants emit more mercury than power plants!
Mercury has been used in chlorine and caustic soda production
for more than one-hundred years. Technology that eliminates the
need to use mercury in chlor-alkali production has been readily
available for just as long. Yet, in the United States, five
chlor-alkali plants have still not committed to stop using the
outdated mercury-cell technology to produce their products. In
2005, these five plants reported emissions of more than 4,400
pounds of mercury into the air. On average, these plants release
more than four times the average amount of mercury released from
a typical power plant; earning them the title "The Filthy Five."
Mercury-free technology has been readily available and in use
around the world for decades. Already, 90 percent of the
chlorine produced in the United States is made using
mercury-free technology. Many plants were constructed using
either diaphragm or membrane-cell technology. However, many
others were built to use mercury. Of those, more than
one-hundred mercury-cell chlor-alkali plants already have
switched or plan to switch to mercury-free technology around the
globe. This analysis has identified 115 such facilities, making
it the most comprehensive compilation of this information to
date. However, some plants undoubtedly have been converted that
were not identified in this analysis.
Even though switching to mercury-free technology is good for the
bottom line, the Filthy Five are still refusing to leave 19th
century technology behind.
Oceana's local organizers and e-activists will help show
these companies that it is time to become responsible corporate
citizens.
If the five plants eliminated mercury use in chlorine
production, nearly 4,400 pounds of reported mercury emissions
could be eliminated each year. This does not include mercury
that is "lost" and not monitored at the plant, an amount
estimated to rival releases from power plants in certain years.
Although the cost of converting to mercury-free technology runs
in the millions of dollars (as detailed in the report), analysis
shows the majority of costs would be recovered within five years
from energy savings, increased capacity and eliminating millions
of dollars in mercury-related fines, upgrades and treatment
costs.
Plants that have
shifted see increases in energy efficiency between 25 and 37
percent. Since electricity can make up half of total production
costs, this can vastly improve profitability.
Many plants also have increased production capacity by
approximately 25 percent in the process of converting to
mercury-free technology.
Some of the Filthy Five have argued that mercury use is
necessary to create high quality caustic soda which is required
for some manufacturing processes like producing rayon, a
human-made fiber. However, mercury-free technology is now being
used to create high quality caustic soda and is being used to
produce rayon in India. Additionally, rayon is no longer
manufactured in the United States.
