This case should send a deep chill through the heart of every parent.
After he had endured three months of ineffective treatments last year
for Hodgkin's lymphoma,
Abraham Cherrix rejected his doctor's recommendation to go
through a second round of chemotherapy. He chose instead to seek out

After doing his research, he traveled with his father to Bio-Medical
Center in Tijuana, Mexico. His treatments included liquid herbal

oncologist, Dr. Rebecca Byrd, to keep her involved in his care. Wanting
no part of their choices, she promptly declared their decision

Department of Social Services.
Within days, the county Social Services personnel had been awarded
partial custody of Abraham and, at 5:20pm on Friday, July 21, Judge
Jesse E. Demps ruled that Abraham's parents were neglectful. They were
ordered to take their child to the hospital on Tuesday morning, July 25,
and sign papers authorizing doctors to provide the treatment that they -
as medical professionals - deem necessary. If they refused to do so,
they could lose custody complete custody of their child, and quite
possibly, put their other four children at risk as well.

More Than Seven
Hours of Sleep Per Night Increases Your Risk of Brain Disease
A study from the National
Institutes of Health found that those who sleep nine hours or
more each night are almost twice as likely to develop
Parkinson's disease as those who sleep six hours or less.
Working night shifts appears to reduce the risk. Longer stints
offered more protection; nurses who worked overnight at least
three times a month cut their Parkinson's risks in half.
Previous studies have demonstrated that those who work night
shifts have lower levels of the hormones melatonin and
oestradiol, which may contribute to the development of
Parkinson's at high levels.
Symptoms of Parkinson's include tremors and muscle stiffness,
and eventually speech, facial expression and balance can be
affected.

Living With Dirty
Air May Boost Heart Attack Risk

NEW YORK - Fatal heart attacks may be more likely among people
who spend decades living in heavily polluted areas, Swedish
researchers report.
While there was no association between people's exposure to
various pollutants over a 30-year period and overall heart
attack risk, such exposure did appear to be associated with a
greater risk of fatal heart attack, especially heart attacks
occurring outside hospitals, Mats Rosenlund of the Stockholm
County Council and colleagues report.
The researchers also found that people who had ever lived in
pollution "hot spots" with particularly dirty air had a 23
percent increased risk of heart attack, and a 40 percent
increased risk of fatal heart attack.
The health effects of short-term exposure to air pollution are
fairly well understood, but it is much less clear how long-term
pollution exposure affects health, Rosenlund and associates
point out in the journal Epidemiology.
Pollution exposure could contribute to heart attack risk by
causing chronic inflammation, speeding the progression of
atherosclerosis (hardening of the coronary arteries) and
altering heart function, they note.
To investigate, they reviewed information on pollution exposure
for 1,397 men and women living in Stockholm County who had
suffered heart attacks for the first time between 1992 and 1994
and 1,870 healthy controls.
The researchers estimated carbon monoxide, sulfur dioxide,
particulate matter and nitrogen dioxide exposure by linking an
individuals' address to historical data on emissions and
atmospheric dispersion of the pollutants.
Overall, there was no link between pollution exposure and heart
attack risk. However, the risk of fatal heart attacks appeared
to have some association with pollution exposure, especially
among people who died outside the hospital.
This finding "implies that sudden death might be of special
importance in relation to long-term air pollution exposure,"
Rosenlund and colleagues conclude.
