Something To Think About
============================
Are you buying milk
or chemicals parading as milk?
Andy Rooney Wonders What They Have Done To
Dairy CBS 60 Minutes. This segment was originally broadcast on
Nov. 6, 2005.
The milk we get from cows has always had a special standing among the
foods we eat. Mothers are always saying to kids, "Drink your milk."
So what in the world have they done to this simple and basic food? I'll
bet a calf wouldn't drink most of the stuff called milk now sold in
cartons. You can't tell some of it from Diet Coke.
The companies that sell milk are upset because people are drinking less
milk then they used to and they don't know why. Has it ever occurred to
them that people aren't drinking it because milk isn't as good as it
used to be?
Rooney picked up some cartons at the milk section of a grocery store:
Lowfat Milk, Fat Free Milk, 2 Percent Reduced Fat Milk, Skim Milk.
Before milk was homogenized - that's mixing the cream in with the milk -
cream came to the top of your milk bottle. If they took the cream off
the top, they skimmed it off. What this ought to be called is not "Skim
Milk" but "Skimmed Milk."
Saturated fats are bad for our arteries. We all know that, but do you
know how much fat milk has in it as it comes from a cow? About 3.2
percent. So 2 percent is no big reduction. (Get that it's 2% of 3.2%)
I like half and half on my shredded wheat but when I say "half and
half," I mean half milk and half cream. I bought some half and half the
other day and I didn't like the taste so I looked at the label to see
what it was half of and what the other half was. Listen to these
ingredients: "Nonfat milk, milk, corn syrup solids, artificial color,
sugar, dipotassium phosphate, sodium citrate mono, and diglycerides,
carrageenan, natural and artificial flavors, vitamin A palmitate". This
is half and half? It's not half anything I want and it has nothing to do
with something as good as milk.
Three and a half percent is what they call Whole Milk. Why don't they
just call it milk? Some of this other stuff tastes more like whole
water.
They all like to use the words "farm" or "dairy" on their cartons.
One came from Farmland Dairies in Wallington, N.J. We went to Wallington
looking for a dairy farm. The address was 520 Main Avenue. At the
?farm,? there was no cow in sight.
My suggestion, if they want to sell more milk, is that they go back to
selling what comes out of a cow.
LENA'S COMMENT: Even though this was aired a couple of years ago
you will find even more chemicalized milk flavors in the so-called dairy
case than when Andy Rooney did his investigation... If you think you
have to drink milk go directly to the cow and not from these
manufacturers who have taken milk out of milk...

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY!
=======================
Researchers compared United States health statistics to those of five
other major countries around the world: Great Britain, Australia,
Germany, Canada, and New Zealand. Apparently, the U.S. is the only one
of the bunch that doesn't provide universal health care to all citizens.
In fact, there are roughly 45 million Americans who don't have health
insurance at all. And to add insult to injury, those of us who do have
insurance are actually paying at least twice - and in some cases, three
times - the going rate in other countries. Here, the average yearly cost
is about $6,000. In Germany and Canada the annual rate is about half of
that. And New Zealand, Australia, and Great Britain all rank somewhere
in the $2,000-3,000 range.
This
info is FYI as I do not support universal medicine simply because our
leaders have no idea how to be honest about it or actually treat illness
and disease! - Lena

Body
Absorbs 5 Lbs of Make-Up Chemicals Per Year
Women who use make-up on a daily basis can
absorb almost 5 pounds of chemicals into their bodies each
year. Some of the compounds present in make-up have been
linked to side effects ranging from skin irritation to
cancer. One class of cosmetic chemicals which could be
dangerous are parabens. Traces of parabens have been found
in breast tumor samples. Another chemical, sodium lauryl
sulfate, can cause skin irritation. Nine out of ten women
also use out-of-date lipstick and mascara, which can be a
breeding ground for harmful bacteria. Many women use more
than 20 different beauty products a day.

Asthma: Early use of
antibiotics is a major cause
July 21, 2007
Children who are treated with antibiotics during their first year are twice as
likely to develop asthma by the age of seven, new research has discovered.
The risk was highest among children who received more than four courses of
antibiotics, and who were given 'broad-spectrum' drugs for general healthcare.
Researchers in Canada made the discovery when they reviewed the medical
histories of 13,116 children. Those who were prescribed antibiotics for anything
other than respiratory problems - so eliminating children with a pre-existing
condition that might have resulted in asthma - were twice as likely to develop
the problem compared with children who weren't given an antibiotic.
The risk could be reduced if children under the age of 12 months weren't
prescribed a broad-spectrum antibiotic - or perhaps not give one at all.

FOOD OF THE WEEK
~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^
The Food Found On
Our Table at Almost Every Meal!
Red, Yellow Or Green they are all great food!
My mother would tell me the story of when I was 18 months old; I ate a
half can of lye, that she was using to make soap, that ate the lining of
my esophagus and left my upper passages looking like a web that spiders
built, according to the doctor who read my esophagram a few years ago.
Shortly after eating the lye and while my throat was still very raw she
would find me sitting in the garden among the tomatoes eating ripe
tomatoes and crying from the pain, but she could not convince me that I
should not eat them. That must have been the beginning of my stubborn
streak or maybe I was just born that way!
Tomatoes continue to be one of my favorite foods into this ripe old-age
of 70! I now know that they are very good for me and you. Our family can
hardly wait every year for my husband's garden to produce them! There
isn't anything that can compare to a home grown, organic tomato!
Tomatoes generally range in size from three-quarters of an inch in
diameter and a quarter of an ounce in weight to six inches in diameter
and two pounds. Tomatoes range in hues of white to red to purple,
greenish yellow or orange. Generally, the lighter colored tomatoes have
a milder taste. The red colored tomatoes get their red pigment due to
the lycopene content. More on lycopene later on?
Are tomatoes fruits or vegetables?
If you're like most people, you think tomatoes are vegetables. If you
talk to a botanist, he/she might insist that the tomato is a fruit
because it contains seeds with sweet pulp. However, a horticulturist
would argue that the tomato plant is a vegetable plant and not like
fruits that are grown on trees (eg. apple, peach). Both arguments are
valid, and in a way, the answer is that tomatoes are both a fruit and a
vegetable.
Tomatoes are the second most consumed vegetable in North America. The
tomato is a treasure of nutrients, including Vitamin C, Vitamin A,
potassium, folic acid and more. Processed tomatoes have higher levels of
the nutrients simply because it is concentrated. North Americans
customarily eat a large volume of tomatoes and tomato products that it
ranks as No.1 among fruits and vegetables in the total amount of
nutrients they contribute to the diet.
Interestingly, second to oranges, tomatoes contribute a high amount of
Vitamin C in North American diets. Vitamin C has long been known to
prevent scurvy - a condition that is characterized by bleeding gums and
soreness in the joints. Vitamin C is also known to function as an
antioxidant in the human body. Studies have shown that it may prevent
certain degenerative diseases and common colds.
In addition, tomato consumption is listed as the fourth most important
source of vitamin A. In the body, vitamin A is converted from sources
beta-carotene and it is important for immune functions, maintenance of
the skin and tissue lining and vision.
Potassium is an essential nutrient that is important for normal health
maintenance and growth. It is required for movement of nutrients across
the cells in the body. A deficiency of potassium would lead to muscle
weakness, apathy, cramps and more. It is important for athletes to
maintain levels of potassium which is lost through sweating during an
event. Potassium levels can be easily maintained before or after the
event by eating foods or drinking fluids high in potassium.
History of the tomato
Tomatoes were first thought to be poison and were not to be eaten but
that idea lost it's wind and then became the food of necessity.
The tomato originated in the Andes Mountains in South America and was
first domesticated in Mexico by the Aztec people. After the Spanish
conquered Mexico in the early 1500s, they introduced it to southern
Europe, where it quickly became popular. The Italians named it "poma
amoris" meaning "apple of love". Similarly, the French also called it "pomme
d'amour". This name gave rise to the legend that the tomato was an
aphrodisiac. However, in colder climates, such as Canada, Great Britain
and parts of the United States, it was called the "wolf peach". This
unappealing name reflected its poor reputation and people's beliefs that
tomatoes were poisonous. Therefore, for many years, the tomato plant was
only grown for decorative purposes.
The most talked about food nutrient known, at this time in the tomato,
is Lycopene and being studied for further health benefits. In addition
to giving tomatoes their vibrant color, lycopene appears to protect
against diseases such as cancer and heart disease.
Lycopene is an antioxidant - it helps to counteract the
harmful effects of substances called free radicals, which
are thought to contribute to many chronic diseases and age-related
processes in the body.
Organically grown tomatoes contain the 35% to 70% more nutrient content
than the traditionally farm grown tomato.
The researchers surveyed the eating habits of over 47,000 men between
the ages of 40-75 for six years and found that the consumption of
tomatoes, tomato sauce, tomato juice and tomato sauce laden pizza was
associated with a reduced risk for developing prostate cancer.
Researchers theorize that lycopene, an antioxidant nutrient found in
large amounts in tomatoes, may be responsible for this possible
protective effect.
I serve up hug plates of sliced fresh tomatoes with sliced cucumbers
splashed with a bit of rice vinegar, salt and pepper and the family
loves it. I make our ketchup, tomato sauce and canned fresh tomatoes to
go with us through the winter. Try a small patch, as tomatoes are easily
grown in your flower bed!
Tomato season is in full swing most places around the US, if that is the
case in your area go out and get some great organically grown tomatoes
for maximum health and nutrient content.

HEALTH TODAY

SUICIDE BY
SUNLIGHT? - PART ONE
This summer, the American Cancer Society (ACS)
has become embroiled in a scandal over its advertising
practices. Based upon input from various focus groups, the ACS
decided to place ads in 15 national magazines strongly implying
that skin cancer is a fatal disease but that these deaths can be
prevented by mass screening.
A young woman in the advertisement holds up a picture of a
smiling blonde. "My sister accidentally killed herself. She died
of skin cancer," reads the headline. The ad cautions: "Left
unchecked, skin cancer can be fatal." It urges readers to "use
sunscreen, cover up and watch for skin changes."
Much of the public already has an almost obsessive fear of the
sun. I have a friend who, even after the liberal use of sun
block, a Tilley hat and other protective clothing, will never
venture out into direct sunlight. To take a walk with her means
to run from the shade of one tree to another. Apparently this
kind of fear will drive people to spend serious money. This
summer a Canadian company, Solestrom, is even marketing a bikini
with a built-in UV meter and an alarm that beeps to tell the
wearer when it's time to head for the shade. The cost is $189 -
if you can find it. At the moment it's sold out. (To me, it
looks more like a high-tech chastity belt than an anticancer
device.)
"There's so much concern about sun exposure and skin cancer that
we saw the demand and designed something to be safe for the
wearer," Solestrom spokeswoman Emily Garassa said.
The attractive blonde in the ACS ad is not really a real skin
cancer victim at all, but a professional model. Another dubious
aspect of this so-called "public service announcement" was that
it was paid for by the sunscreen manufacturer, Neutrogena, which
stands to profit directly from any ensuing skin cancer panic.
The relationship between ACS and its corporate sponsor is
reciprocal: Neutrogena pays for the ACS ad campaign and in
return gets to place the ACS logo on its products. But
Neutrogena's sponsorship of the skin cancer ads was not
disclosed to the public until it was revealed in the New York
Times.
The manipulation of public opinion through advertising is
nothing new for the ACS. After all, ACS became the nation's
wealthiest charity largely through its public relations acumen.
The man who primarily created the modern-day ACS was Albert
Lasker, the celebrated Madison Avenue executive still remembered
for his devastatingly effective cigarette advertising campaigns
incorporating the slogan, "Reach for a Lucky [cigarette] instead
of a sweet."
But isn't the ACS correct in telling the public that skin cancer
is deadly? Well, yes - and no. There are certainly some kinds of
skin cancer, such as malignant melanoma, that are deadly. But
deadly forms of skin cancer comprise only 6 percent of the
overall number of skin cancer cases in the US each year: the
remaining 94 percent are not life-threatening. The trouble is
that most people have only a fuzzy grasp of the difference
between the rare but potentially fatal forms of skin cancer,
like melanoma, and the much more common non-fatal kinds that
afflict more than a million Americans each year.
These more common types of skin cancer, basal cell and squamous
cell skin tumors, are not even counted as cancer in the National
Cancer Institute's SEER database, which gathers epidemiological
information on the incidence and survival of cancer in the US.
Basal cell and squamous cell skin cancers rarely metastasize,
are almost always readily cured, and very rarely ever kill
anyone. I encountered a single fatal case 17 years ago, and it
was so exceptional that I have remembered it all these years.
(As a confirmation of this, try typing the phrase "deadly
squamous cell skin cancer" or "deadly basal cell skin cancer"
into the Google search engine (include the quotation marks). You
will get exactly zero hits.)
Thus, to warn the general public that sun exposure will cause
deadly skin cancers that are cutting people down in their prime
- without distinguishing between rare melanomas and the much
more common, garden variety, curable skin tumors - seems
deliberately aimed at creating public anxiety, if not panic.
To be concluded, next week.

How Toxic is Your Average
Laundry Detergent?
Typical laundry detergents may be imparting
more on your clothing than a fresh scent. Most contain a
toxic slew of chemicals that leave residues behind on your
clothing that can potentially be absorbed by your skin or
evaporated into the air for you to breathe in.
Laundry detergents checked out in my local grocery store
contain:
- Petroleum distillates (aka napthas),
which have been linked to cancer
- Phenols, which can cause toxicity
throughout the entire body
- Artificial fragrances, which have been
linked to various toxic effects on fish and mammals
- Phosphates, which stimulate the growth of
certain marine plants when they're released into the
environment and contribute to unbalanced ecosystems
- Optical brighteners, which can be toxic
to fish and can cause bacterial mutations and allergic
reactions
Are those good things? No! Can we play a part in
changing that? Yes!
