Tobacco is a mood-altering, addictive drug
that kills 500,000 Americans a year (200 million worldwide)
Costs $400 billion each year, according to "Smoking and Health
Review," (1992).
The American Lung Association says tobacco contains more than 4,000
chemicals, 60 of which causes cancer.
Some of the 'killers' are radioactivity, arsenic, ammonia, lead,
formaldehyde, nitrogen dioxide, cadmium, phenol, benzene and hydrogen
cyanide (the 'gas chamber' gas that poisons the respiratory enzymes)

I'm sitting here wondering how it got to be August already? The year is
swiftly moving on and I'm having a hard time keeping up with it. I truly
would like to slow it down and take a bit more time but that doesn't
seem possible. Maybe if I had Genie powers, but that doesn't seem likely
either, so guess I will simply zip along with the days and pass along as
much knowledge as I can through them.
Monsoons are moving in again so gotta hurry and get it taken care of
before the thunder and lightening shuts me down. The weather man told us
they were out of here until Wednesday, what do they know? :-)

Study: Heart Tumors May Be More Common
By MARILYNN MARCHIONE
(AP) Scientists studying a rare genetic disorder have made a surprising
discovery that helps explain...
Scientists studying a rare genetic disorder have made a surprising
discovery that helps explain why certain heart tumors develop and
suggests they may be more common than had been believed.
Doctors should look more broadly for signs of such tumors, which aren't
cancerous but are dangerous because they can break off and cause
strokes, researchers say.
"This may be more widespread than we had ever thought," said Dr. Jil
Tardiff, a cardiologist at Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New
York who reviewed the research that was reported in Thursday's New
England Journal of Medicine.
The work was led by Dr. Craig Basson, a cardiologist at Weill Medical
College of Cornell University, and involved four other hospitals in the
United States and two in Belgium.
They studied a large Belgian family with 18 members who had a muscle
disorder that caused spotty skin pigmentation, tight or clenched hands
and feet, and an inability to open their jaws fully. Three also had
heart tumors called myxomas, which affect one of every 100,000 people
each year.
"Anybody who's a cardiologist has seen one," Basson said of such tumors.
No one had connected them to muscle disorders, but Basson suspected a
link. He surprisingly found it in myosin, a group of proteins with an
array of important jobs, including making muscles contract.
Defects in myosin genes are known to cause disorders such as Usher
syndrome, the leading cause of blindness and deafness in young children.
A decade ago, they were linked to sudden cardiac death in young people.
The gene defect Basson identified is very similar to some of the
mutations that cause sudden cardiac death - an "unexpected and exciting"
discovery, Tardiff wrote.
"It makes us think more broadly" about who may have heart tumors, and to
suspect the condition in people with other muscle disorders or unusual
orthopedic symptoms like the clenched hands, Tardiff said. "Many people
think it's underdiagnosed."
Now that the cause of such tumors is known, scientists can try to design
treatments like drugs and gene therapy as alternatives to surgery, the
only treatment for them now, Basson said.
The discovery also could have implications for the field of stem cell
biology. The myosin defect Basson identified is in a gene that was
thought to stop functioning shortly after birth. His work shows it may
keep going to some degree in some people, which he views as evidence
that there's a type of stem cell in the adult heart, a widely debated
theory.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY!

Can Your Health Afford Harmony?
The outlook for the future of dietary supplements in Europe is
decidedly gloomy. But if you're a U.S. citizen you might be wondering
how all of this will affect you. In fact, the 2005 implementation of the
EU directive won't directly affect consumers outside the EU. But the
U.S. and the EU are both members of a much larger club.
The U.S. is one of the 165 member countries of the Codex Alimentarius
Commission - an international food standards program created by the Food
and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the World Health Organization
(WHO). One of the purposes of the Codex Commission is to "harmonize"
international food trade. And here are a few key elements of that
harmonizing:
* WHO regards all dietary supplements as
"drugs"
* The Codex Commission has made it clear
that it wants to limit
over-the-counter sales of dietary supplements while reclassifying
others as pharmaceuticals, available only through a pharmacist
* The U.S. has one vote on the Codex
Commission. The European
Union represents 27 votes on the commission: the 25 votes of its
member countries and 2 votes of the 2 EU candidate countries
* Under World Trade Organization (WTO)
rules, Codex decisions
override decisions of individual countries
* Member countries (including the U.S.)
that refuse to
"harmonize" with WTO directives may be subject to restrictive
trade sanctions
* The European Union is the United States'
largest trade and
investment partner, with a yearly two-way trade in goods and
services that is estimated to be nearly $600 billion
* Just announced a new WHO rule to be voted
on this week that
will effect all countries!

Is That Hysterectomy Necessary?
Maybe Not!
According to a recent study published in the December
2002 issue of the American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology, the
rate of hysterectomies performed each year is on the rise. In his
comments for a print interview made public at the time of the release of
this study, Dr. Ernst Bartsich, a New York gynecologist,
attributed the increase caused by his colleagues, who continue to
withhold information about the aftereffects of hysterectomy and ovary
removal. He added something to the effect that if women knew the truth,
they wouldn't agree to these surgeries as readily. And I would like to
add that if women aren't given all the information they need to decide,
how can it be informed consent?
Gynecologists have traditionally downplayed the risks involved with the
operation itself and its many lasting consequences. Side effects
include hot flashes, depression, anxiety, osteoporosis, generalized
fatigue, stress and urge incontinence, masculinization, insomnia, bowel
dysfunction, mood swings, just to mention a few. More importantly,
the removal of the uterus and the ovaries can lead to loss of sexual
desire, diminished orgasmic response and pain with intercourse.

Lena's says, "Think Before Stepping Into That Public
Pool!"
CDC Pushing for Cleaner Swimming Pools
Jul 31, 2004
By DANIEL YEE
ATLANTA (AP) - Seeing diaper-clad infants in her neighborhood swimming
pool without protective rubber pants led Karen Byers to search for a new
place to take a dip.
She had good reason to be concerned. The Centers for Disease Control and
Prevention says more Americans - perhaps a thousand or more each year -
are getting sick from public swimming pools.
That's not so many when you consider the millions of people who go
swimming. However, reported pool-related outbreaks - mainly bouts of
diarrhea - rose from two in 1986 to 21 in 2000, the most recent CDC
statistics available. While the agency does not keep track of how many
people were affected in those cases, it does know that most of the
16,800 confirmed illnesses in the 1990s linked to outbreaks in
recreational waters occurred in swimming pools and spas.
"And that's only a fraction of what's out there," said Michael Beach,
epidemiologist with the CDC's Division of Parasitic Diseases. "There are
definitely a lot more cases that are not being reported. We believe some
of the biggest outbreaks are in pools."
The latest numbers from the federal agency show that more than 1,800
pools had to be immediately closed after inspections found serious
health violations that put swimmers at risk, such as not having enough
disinfectant to kill germs in the water. The CDC analyzed 22,131
inspections conducted two years ago and found that 54 percent uncovered
one or more pool safety violations, everything from filtration to
chlorine problems.
"That's a shocking number for us to see - those are clearly violations
that mean, 'Everybody out,'" Beach said.
Government health officials are urging pool operators and swimmers to do
more to prevent the spread of disease. They are pressing for more
regular inspections and better staff training - and encouraging swimmers
to stay out of the pool when they have diarrhea.
"We need to do a better job of maintaining the pools and spas in this
country," said Beach.
Another CDC study, released in July, said similar health violations
forced the closing of one in nine public spas - those operated by
hotels, apartment complexes, gyms or campgrounds - over a five-month
period in 2002.
Improperly treated pools can be the source of a range of waterborne
illnesses, including giardia, E. coli, shigella and cryptosporidium,
said Joan Rose, a microbiologist at Michigan State University.
"Swimming clearly provides an opportunity for good physical activity -
it's great fun," Beach said. "The CDC isn't trying to tell people to
stop swimming. We are trying to raise awareness, help people understand
what the issues are and swim responsibly."
One of the largest pool-related outbreaks in the country happened last
August in Lawrence, Kan., when as many as 600 people may have been
sickened by the parasitic disease cryptosporidium. The CDC found that
the parasite was spread through local pools, day care centers and people
who lived together.
This summer, the Lawrence-Douglas County health department has been
trying to help pool operators and swimmers learn how to keep their pools
germ-free. The No. 1 message: Don't swim if you have diarrhea.
"We know last year they had been swimming when they had diarrhea. That
is really, really not something to do," said W. Kay Kent, health
department director.
Twenty-six children became sick from an E. coli outbreak at a popular
water park in Marietta, Ga., six years ago. State health officials
determined the pool had been contaminated by human feces around one of
the pool's slides.
The outbreak prompted stronger regulations for pool, lakes and other
bathing facilities across Georgia. Now all public pools must show their
inspection scores upon request.
Florida, the largest pool state in the Southeast with a million
residential and commercial pools, faces many healthy swimming
challenges. Hotel pools quickly fill up with tourists who aren't used to
being around a swimming pool, said Wendy Parker, spokeswoman for the
Florida Swimming Pool Association.
"We're dealing with a population who are enjoying themselves on
vacation; they're not as worried about things as they might be if
they're in their own back yard," Parker said. "It's a challenge to
operate a pool and educate bathers."
Byers, who was disgusted with what she saw at her neighborhood pool,
tried several other pools before settling with the one at Atlanta's
Piedmont Park, about seven miles from her home.
She described it as cleaner and better maintained than other pools she
visited.
"I'll keep coming back here - unless I see a bunch of babies in the
pool," she says with a laugh.

FOOD OF THE
WEEK

Figgy Food Medicine
Just had a call from a friend in Southern California say, "Come get
some figs, the tree is falling down from the weight of so many!"
Now I'm not a great fan of figs but I will eat them occasionally. His
call got me to thinking about what is in them. Maybe I will eat more now
that I've found how great they are in nutrition! Here is what I found!
Have you heard of a Fresh Fig Poultice? No! Its use is found in the
Bible in Isaiah 38:21 Works, wonders for boils and skin infections.
Figs are one of the first known natural medicines. The Roman writer
Pliny, (52-113 AD) said, "Figs are restorative. They increase the
strength of young people, preserve the elderly in better health and make
them look younger with fewer wrinkles."
Figs contain the photochemical psoralenes, which helps bring about
beneficial results in skin injuries, hence a fig poultice to draw and
infection to a head. Also beneficial in the removal of dead skin tissues
as for cosmetic use in facial scrubs, and in a skin disease involving
lack of pigmentation in patches of skin (vitiligo). I bet it is
the mineral properties contained in figs that does the trick!
Both fresh and dried figs are great medicinals! Dried, having about 5
times the amount of nutrients as fresh.
Figs have the highest overall mineral content of all common fruits. A 40
gram (1/4 cup) serving provides 244 mg of potassium (7% of the
DV), 53 mg of calcium (6% of the DV) and 1.2 mg
of iron (6% of the DV). On top of that contain the calming
vitamins B1 and B2.
Great for intestinal balance and cleansing Figs have the highest dietary
fiber of any common fruit, nut or vegetable. They are high in peptic
fiber, which is a soft soluble fiber and helps the body remove toxic
wastes and reduces cholesterol levels. They are good to prevent and
relieve constipation. Chinese medicine recognizes figs as a toxin
neutralizer. One of the most alkalizing foods, figs can help balance the
acid that forms from diets rich in meat and refined foods. Figs contain
significant amounts of the proteolytic enzyme Ficin which is a digestion
enzyme helping with the digestion especially of proteins.
Word of caution; check that the figs you are buying are organic and of
good quality. Fumigation is sometimes used to assure the absence of
insects in figs and sulphur dioxide is used to maintain their sweet
flavor and rich color. Dried figs infested by mites (rare but possible)
may cause severe gastrointestinal conditions if eaten. Mold attack may
cause figs to form mycotoxins, which can make you ill, so stick with
fresh when you can.
Need ideas on how and/or when to eat figs?
1. Tuck a few figs into a plastic bag for the office, school,
game or park, makes for a quick healthful snack. Satisfies to a sweet
tooth.
2. Keep a container of dried organic figs in a desk drawer at
work, to satisfy late afternoon munchies, or to nibble at coffee break
time.
3. Chop a few California figs to add to tossed green salads. They
add delightful sweetness and texture, as well as fiber.
4. Sweeten up mashed or cubed winter squash or sweet potatoes
with some chopped figs adding a richness of their own, so you can skip
the butter or margarine.
5. Blend low-fat cream, ricotta or cottage cheese with some figs
to create a great spread for toast or bagels, or as a dip for sliced
fresh fruit.
6. Chop some California figs to scatter over instant or regular
oatmeal or any cold cereal, skipping the sugar.
Grab a bag from your neighbor's tree and put them into your dehydrator
for future use!
Enjoy your figgy food medicine!

Scandals have eroded US public's confidence
in drug industry Jeanne Lenzer
Only 13% of Americans believe that pharmaceutical companies are
"generally honest and trustworthy," putting the industry on a
par with tobacco, oil, and managed care companies, a recent
Harris Poll survey has found. Public confidence in drug
companies has plunged harder and faster than for any other
industry, the survey indicates (17 July, p 128).
The distrust appears to be spreading to respected US medical
bodies and academic journals in the wake of a spate of public
controversies concerning the influence of drug companies.
Guidelines for lowering cholesterol concentrations, issued on 12
July by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute and the
American Heart Association, sparked a furore when it was shown
that all but one of the nine authors had financial ties to the
manufacturers of cholesterol lowering drugs. The institute
subsequently posted on its website the financial interests of
all those involved.
Dr Barbara Alving, acting director at the institute, said that
the guideline panel members had been chosen because of their
"stature and track record in the field and their integrity." The
guidelines were vetted by the American Heart Association and 90
other reviewers, she said, adding that leading medical experts
"are also often the very people whose advice is sought by
industry."
But Dr Henry Barry, senior associate chairman of the department
of family practice at Michigan State University, said:
"Basically what we have are [panellists] who are extrapolating
data beyond what was in the studies. And when you have folks who
have a financial interest, the question is, was that
extrapolation influenced by their financial interests?"
Dr Michael Jacobson, executive director of the Center for
Science in the Public Interest, said the failure to disclose the
eight authors' competing interests in the press release and the
published paper was "a travesty." He added: "I don't question
the science, but this makes a mockery of disclosure rules."
The scandal comes after the publication of a study from the
centre showing that the authors of 13 of 163 articles published
in leading US medical journals had failed to disclose "relevant
conflicts of interest."
One of the authors of a study on the sources of lead in children
living near a smelter failed to acknowledge that her husband
owned the smelter in question.

New Report Details Health Threats at Superfund Sites
Across Country
The Bush administration's failure to protect Americans' health from
toxic waste pollution is documented in this new report on the Superfund
toxic waste cleanup program released today by the Sierra Club. The
report breaks down state-by-state the Superfund sites across the country
where human exposure to toxic pollution and groundwater pollution is
either not under control or where insufficient data on threats exist.
The report is based on Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) performance
indicators that show that the task of protecting people's health and
water supplies from toxic chemical contamination is far from complete.
The report finds that human exposure to health-threatening chemicals is
not under control at 111 Superfund sites. At another 199 Superfund
sites, EPA has insufficient data to determine if migration of
groundwater pollution is under control.
Americans are paying twice: once with their health and again with their
taxes. There is a better way. The Bush administration could help solve
these health threats and tax burden by supporting the polluter-pays
principle to recreate a stable funding source for the Superfund program.
