Greetings and thank you for

I surely hope your week is
better than ours... This is promising to be one of those weeks I would
like to skip... Trouble with my bank, well not my bank it appears
someone may have stolen my identity but they don't know for sure yet? So
we are stuck in limbo waiting the findings... Storm knocked out our
freezer sometime over the weekend and since it isn't in the house it was
out for several days before we discovered it and by that time everything
was thawed and warm and lost. What a mess... "That that doesn't kill
makes me stronger." I keep repeating that to myself and praying for that
strength...

Something To Think About
============================
New Weight Loss Pill On It's
Way!
Glaxo has asked the FDA for
approval to market an over-the-counter (OTC) drug called Alli -
pronounced, "al-eye." Alli is simply a low-dose version of a
prescription weight-loss drug called Xenical. If the FDA approves Alli,
it will have the distinction of being the only weight-loss drug
available OTC. So the key selling point will be: Why take your chances
with weight loss supplements when you can take an FDA-approved drug that
needs no prescription?
Well, I can think of some good reasons not to, and they are mostly
listed at Xenical's website!
* Xenical works by
partly blocking absorption of dietary fats (NEWS FLASH: Some dietary
fats are essential for good health and severe illness has occurred with
those who went on a total fat-free diet!)
* According to the Xenical web site, the drug also interferes with the
absorption of fat-soluble vitamins, such as D, E and K and beta
carotene. (The body needs these to function!)
*According to the Xenical web site (FAIR WARNING: If you're eating
something, you might want to put it aside for a moment) other unpleasant
side effects may include gas with oily discharge, increased number of
bowel movements, urgent need for bowel movements, and an inability to
control bowel movements (all of which seems to be a polite way to dance
around the word "diarrhea")
* According to a Wall
Street Journal report, the blocking of fat absorption "results in
flatulence and other unpleasant side effects"
These side effects usually occur during the first weeks of treatment,
but in some people may continue for six months or longer (again,
according to the Xenical site)
LENA'S COMMENT:
What happened to helping the body function properly and losing weight
naturally? 95% of people prefer something that isn't safe? A mystery to
me! If any part of the body is blocked from doing it's job that part
will eventually atrophy and not work, so does this make any sense? NO!

How The Sunshine Vitamin
Zaps Disease
Dr. John Cannell's latest Vitamin
D Newsletter describes experiments demonstrating how irradiating
blood with ultraviolet light creates pharmacological amounts of
vitamin D, which can work as a safe, natural antibiotic.
The experiments were based on Dr. Niels Finsen's Nobel Prize winning
work on sunshine as a cure for tuberculosis of the skin more than a
century ago.
Photoluminescense Therapy
Vitamin D can increase your body's production of
naturally occurring antimicrobial peptides, which destroy the cell
walls of viruses and bacteria. Blood irradiation, also known as "photoluminescense
therapy," can cause the blood to produce vitamin D. Many substances,
including milk, develop vitamin D activity when irradiated.
Commonly Used 50 Years Ago
In the procedure, about 300 cc of the blood is removed,
irradiated with ultraviolet light, and then returned to their body.
This technique was used in hospitals around the country in the
1930s, '40s and early '50s. The procedure rapidly cured both rickets
and tetany, both commonly caused by vitamin D deficiencies.
Cures Life-Threatening Infections
Studies have shown a variety of beneficial results; in
one case series, doctors used the procedure to treat more than 400
patients with life-threatening infections, and cured nearly all of
the patients with moderately advanced infections, and had a 45
percent success rate on patients with highly advanced infections.
These results rival those of other standard procedures.

Slower Breathing May
Lower Blood Pressure
July 31, 2006
By LAURAN NEERGAARD
WASHINGTON (AP) - Take a slow deep breath, then exhale just as
slowly. Can you take fewer than 10 breaths a minute? Research
suggests breathing that slowly for a few minutes a day is enough
to help some people nudge down bad
blood pressure.
Why would that brief interlude of calm really work? A scientist
at the National Institutes of Health thinks how we breathe may
hold a key to how the body regulates blood pressure - and that
it has less to do with relaxation than with breaking down all
that salt most of us eat.
Now Dr. David Anderson is trying to prove it, with the help of a
special gadget that trains volunteers with hypertension to
slow-breathe.
If he's right, the work could shed new light on the intersection
between hypertension, stress and diet.
"If you sit there under-breathing all day and you have a high
salt intake, your kidneys may be less effective at getting rid
of that salt than if you're out hiking in the woods," said
Anderson, who heads research into behavior and hypertension at
the NIH's National Institute on Aging.
An estimated 65 million Americans have high blood pressure,
putting them at increased risk of heart attacks, strokes, kidney
damage, blindness and dementia. Many don't know it. Hypertension
is often called the silent killer, because patients may notice
no symptoms until it already has done serious damage.
Anyone can get high blood pressure, measured as a level of 140
over 90 or more. But being overweight and inactive, and eating
too much salt - Americans eat nearly double the upper limit for
good health - all increase the risk. Indeed, losing weight,
physical activity and cutting sodium are the most effective
lifestyle changes people can make to lower blood pressure.
Still, most hypertension patients need medications, too.
While they know risk factors, scientists don't fully understand
the root causes of hypertension: What skews the body's usually
finely tuned mechanisms for regulating the force of blood
pounding against artery walls, until it can't compensate for
some extra pounds on a couch potato? Understanding those
mechanisms could point to better ways to prevent and treat
hypertension.
Enter breathing.
Meditation, yoga and similar relaxation techniques that
incorporate slow, deep breathing have long been thought to aid
blood pressure, although research to prove an effect has been
spotty.
Then in 2002, the Food and Drug Administration cleared the
nonprescription sale of a medical device called RESPeRATE, to
help lower blood pressure by pacing breathing. The Internet-sold
device counts breaths by sensing chest or abdominal movement,
and sounds gradually slowing chimes that signal when to inhale
and exhale. Users follow the tone until their breathing slows
from the usual 16 to 19 breaths a minute to 10 or fewer.
In clinical trials funded by maker InterCure Inc., people who
used the slow-breathing device for 15 minutes a day for two
months saw their blood pressure drop 10 to 15 points. It's not
supposed to be a substitute for diet, exercise or medication,
but an addition to standard treatment.
Why slow-breathing works "is still a bit of a black box," says
Dr. William J. Elliott of Chicago's Rush University Medical
Center, who headed some of that research and was surprised at
the effect.
Slow, deep breathing does relax and dilate blood vessels
temporarily, but that's not enough to explain a lasting drop in
blood pressure, says NIH's Anderson.
So, in a laboratory at Baltimore's Harbor Hospital, Anderson is
using the machine to test his own theory: When under chronic
stress, people tend to take shallow breaths and unconsciously
hold them, what Anderson calls inhibitory breathing. Holding a
breath diverts more blood to the brain to increase alertness -
good if the boss is yelling - but it knocks off kilter the
blood's chemical balance. More acidic blood in turn makes the
kidneys less efficient at pumping out sodium.
In animals, Anderson's experiments have shown that inhibitory
breathing delays salt excretion enough to raise blood pressure.
Now he's testing if better breathing helps people reverse that
effect.
"They may be changing their blood gases and the way their
kidneys are regulating salt," he says.
If Anderson's right, it would offer another explanation for why
hypertension is what he calls "a disease of civilization and a
sedentary lifestyle."
Meanwhile, health authorities recommend that everyone take
simple steps to lower blood pressure: by dropping a few pounds,
taking a walk or getting physical activity, and eating less
sodium - no more than 2,300 milligrams a day - and more fruits
and vegetables.

Audit Shows Toxins
Poorly Safeguarded
July 27, 2006
By LIBBY QUAID
WASHINGTON (AP) - Biological agents and toxins used to kill
wildlife are poorly safeguarded by the Agriculture Department, a
federal audit found.
At issue is how the department handles and stores the poisons it
uses to kill animals such as starlings, wild turkeys and
chickens, black bears, coyotes and wolves that are considered a
nuisance.
The department's Wildlife Services program uses chemical agents
to kill animals, mainly because they threaten livestock, crops
or people in airplanes.
An audit by the department's inspector general faulted the
agency for:
_failing to keep accurate inventories of agents or toxins.
_not restricting access to agents or toxins.
_not having complete security plans.
Auditors visited 10 of 75 registered entities where agents are
kept and found that none of the 10 complied with security
regulations.
Department spokeswoman Karen Eggert said Thursday that officials
take their wildlife responsibilities "very seriously and comply
with all federal and state laws associated with the use of
hazardous materials."
She said the department stepped up its oversight of hazardous
materials in 2004 with quarterly site reviews to make sure its
inventory database is accurate. Chemicals are secured in locked
storage facilities, and employees work closely with states to be
certified to distribute chemicals, she said.
Environmental groups criticize the department for poisoning
animals.
"The larger question is why the federal government is scattering
highly dangerous toxicants all across the country as a wildlife
control strategy," said Wendy Keefover-Ring, spokeswoman for
Sinapu, a Colorado-based advocacy group for wolves and other
predators.
"For reasons of public safety, as well as environmental
integrity, the Department of Agriculture needs to move away from
its poison first mentality for wildlife management," she said.
The department killed more than 2.7 million nuisance animals in
2004, the most recent year for which data was available. The
majority of animals killed were starlings, birds that destroy
crops and contaminate livestock feed.
