Greetings and thank you for
being an optin subscriber!
This has been a glorious week, weather wise. Showers from time to time with the
temperatures in the 70's to mid 80's and I hate to see it go so fast. Oh
well that's life... On the other hand health education wise the week wasn't any different than the weeks before
it in that lots of people call or email with health problems looking for
a quick fix. Sadly if you haven't practiced preventative health and end
up sick there are no quick fixes. But there are a couple of things that
are easy and simple that can make it less likely you will get ill. At
the risk of driving everyone nuts I must say you have to supplement with
a total balanced mineral supplement if you want a chance. Read the
"Balance Your Way To Health." Be smart and take charge of your
health before it takes charge of
you!

Expert: Diabetes Drug
Should Be Pulled
July 30, 2007
By ANDREW BRIDGES
WASHINGTON (AP) - The widely used diabetes drug Avandia should be pulled
from the market because of heart risks, a federal scientist said Monday.
Those risks, combined with no unique short-term benefits in helping
diabetics control blood-sugar levels, fail to justify keeping Avandia on
the market, according to a copy of a slide presentation by Food and Drug
Administration scientist Dr. David Graham.
The document was distributed at the onset of a daylong meeting of a
joint panel of outside experts convened to consider whether the drug
should be restricted to use in select patients and branded with
prominent warnings or removed altogether from sale. Previously, the FDA
said information from dozens of studies of the GlaxoSmithKline PLC (GSK)
drug points to an increased risk of heart attack.
Glaxo officials, meanwhile, disputed that claim, citing their own
analyses of studies of Avandia, also called rosiglitazone.
"The number of myocardial infarctions is small, the data are
inconsistent and there is no overall evidence rosiglitazone is different
from any other oral antidiabetes agents," said Dr. Ronald Krall, the
company's senior vice president and chief medical officer.
The FDA isn't required to follow the advice of its advisory committees
but usually does.
The FDA moved up the date of Monday's meeting following the May
publication of a study by The New England Journal of Medicine that
generated new concerns about Avandia's safety. The pooled analysis of 42
studies revealed a 43 percent higher risk of heart attack for those
taking Avandia compared with people taking other diabetes drugs or no
diabetes medication.
Glaxo, meanwhile, says its own data show no increase in heart risks with
Avandia compared with other diabetes drugs, including Actos. The FDA's
Graham, in his presentation, said Avandia does increase heart risks -
something Actos, from Takeda Pharmaceuticals, does not do.
About 1 million Americans with Type 2 diabetes use Avandia to control
blood sugar by increasing the body's sensitivity to insulin. That sort
of treatment has long been presumed to lessen the heart risks already
associated with the disease, which is linked to obesity. News that
Avandia might actually increase those risks would represent a "serious
limitation" of the drug's benefit, according to the FDA.
LENA'S COMMENT: By now you know that the FDA
thinks they know more than the scientists who say the drug is dangerous
and should be removed. Don't expect the FDA to know what's best for
anyone except the pharmaceutical industry that owns them
lock-stock-N-barrel...

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY!

That extra force when brushing your teeth doesn't do any good.
In a study of plaque removal, results display that a brushing force of
about 10 ounces of pressure removes plaque most efficiently. Any more
force than that might wear down both the toothbrush and the teeth a
little bit faster, and has no added effect on removing the dental
plaque.

Finding Hidden MSG on Food
Labels
It is very difficult to really know whether MSG (monosodium
glutamate) is in your food, because it goes by so many aliases. To avoid
ingesting this toxic additive, you're best off choosing fresh, unprocessed
foods. But becoming familiar with the hidden names of MSG can also help you
determine what foods to eat.
Here is just a sampling of ingredients that contain MSG (the link below has a
full list):
Gelatin
Hydrolyzed Vegetable Protein (HVP)
Yeast Extract
Malted Barley
Rice Syrup or Brown Rice Syrup
Also, many restaurants add MSG to their menu items, so when eating out always be
sure to tell your server that you don't want MSG added to your food.

Green and Yellow
Diet Health Food!
Vines are full and rampant with food, in many
gardens, right now. Having enhanced our table daily every summer.
CUCUMBERS! My husband and grandchildren think lunch and dinner
without a plate of sliced raw fresh cucumber (aka cuke) is a
crime! If they aren't eating them raw they are digging them out of the
pickle jar that I put up every year?

My husband grows organic only, in three varieties, the round pimply
yellow lemon cuke, long huge green slicing cukes and small pimply
pickling cukes but there are many varieties available.

The cucumber belongs to the same vegetable family as pumpkin, zucchini,
watermelon and squash.
First cultivated in Asia in ancient times, it was brought to America by
Columbus, and was eventually grown by both Native Americans and
colonists from Florida to Canada. Today cukes grow in a wide variety of
shapes and sizes, from the 1"-long ones sold as gherkins to mammoth
greenhouse varieties that can reach 20" or longer. Can be found in
grocery stores year round! Healthy and nutritionally sound.
The high water content in cukes makes them a great diuretic for those of
you looking to lose weight and/or lower blood pressure. They also are
full of fiber making it perfect to keep your intestinal system moving
right along another great weight loss item as well as blood pressure
lowering.
Cukes are said to be great in helping in the treatment of arthritis,
especially gout, since it helps eliminate uric acid. The liquid of the
cucumber is said to be a rejuvenator and makes us feel and look
youthful. Now who can't handle that? If you want to try rejuvenating
your skin either puree or slice a cucumber and apply it on your face,
let it sit for a half hour or so then gently rinse off with warm mineral
rich water (mineral rinse; 1 teaspoon liquid minerals to a quart of
warm filtered/purified water). Be ready for a glowing, soft skin!
Cukes are touted to have the power to relax and alleviate sunburn pain
as well.
Those great Minerals making them so good for you are; Calcium,
Iron, Magnesium, Phosphorus, Potassium, Sodium, Zinc, Copper, Manganese
and Selenium. Of course vitamins weren't left out either they include;
C, A, E, K, B-6, B-12, Thiamin, Riboflavin, Niacin and Pantothenic
acid.
Eating cukes:
If your cucumbers are organic and unwaxed, you can eat them
unpeeled. Just wash them thoroughly under running water and serve them
sliced or diced in a salad or by themselves with splash of lemon juice
and salt and pepper to taste or with a vinaigrette dressing. You can add
a few slices in a sandwich or you can even juice it along with other
vegetables to add those nutrients. Some people like them steamed like
squash but they lose most of their nutrients when cooked. Some people
have a hard time digesting raw cucumbers. Me being one of those. Why, I
don't know?
Great fast food! My husband and grandchildren have been caught eating
them straight off the vine in the garden!
Eat and enjoy this diet and health food!

SUICIDE BY
SUNLIGHT? - PART TWO The Conclusion
This week we conclude our discussion of the
American Cancer Society's ad campaign which emphasizes the
alleged dangers of sunlight and skin cancer.
Some might argue that it is important to warn people to avoid
sunlight exposure, and to screen for skin cancer, since melanoma
is such a deadly disease. But this argument is flawed, not least
because the exact nature of the association between sun exposure
and melanoma is uncertain. As Dr. Barry Kramer, associate
director for disease prevention at the National Institutes of
Health, put it: "It's just not that simple."
Dr. Marianne Berwick, an epidemiologist at the University of New
Mexico, has done extensive research on this very issue, and has
authored 75 PubMed-listed articles on melanoma. She led a 2005
study, published in the Journal of the National Cancer
Institute, showing that people who received a lot of sun
exposure up to the time of their diagnosis actually had better
survival rates than those who received little sun exposure.
That's right, better. The study concluded: "Sun exposure is
associated with increased survival from melanoma" (Berwick
2005).
As early as 1990, Cedric Garland and his colleagues showed that
people who are regularly exposed to ultraviolet radiation
because of their occupation have a decreased risk of developing
melanoma. The reason for this might be that a tan blocks the
further penetration of ultraviolet rays, so there is less free
radical production. Another reason might be that people who
spend much time in the sun produce an abundance of vitamin D,
which exerts a protective effect. Other studies have shown that
people who consume a lot of fat and alcohol have an increased
risk of melanoma, while those who eat foods high in vitamin D,
carotenoids, and protein and carbohydrate have less risk. So
melanoma may have more to do with the hot dog and the beer you
consume in the bleachers this summer than with the suntan you
get by sitting there.
Admittedly, there is a continuing debate over the role of
sunlight in melanoma, but there is at least as much evidence
that sunlight can be protective as there is to show that it is
directly harmful. For that reason, many doctors consider the ACS
advertisements to be a gross over-simplification of a
complicated issue.
"We do have some pretty good evidence that sunscreen will reduce
your risk of the less lethal forms of skin cancer," Dr. Kramer
told the New York Times. "There's very little evidence that
sunscreens protect you against melanoma, yet you often hear that
as the dominant message."
ACS concedes that their campaign has a deliberately alarmist
tone. According to Dr. J. Leonard Lichtenfeld, who is the deputy
chief medical officer at the ACS, "We have taken some license in
taking that message and using it the way we've used it," he
said, "because that's the way to get the message to our target
audience."
The financial relationship between ACS and Neutrogena has also
raised red flags for some experts. "When people see an
American Cancer Society public service announcement," said
Dr. Lisa Schwartz, co-director of the Outcomes Group at the
Veterans Affairs hospital in White River Junction, Vt., "They
expect it to reflect the best evidence. We don't want people who
have a financial interest to be telling you the benefit of doing
something."
Dr. Lichtenfeld of the ACS denied any inherent conflict of
interest in the advertising campaign, asserting that Neutrogena
did not influence the cancer society's message on skin cancer.
But if that were really so, why would the ACS fail to take into
account the many reputable scientific studies showing a lower
incidence of melanoma when people are regularly exposed to
sunlight?
Dr. Kramer, of the National Institutes of Health, also disputed
the advertisement's claim that skin cancer is "almost always
curable if you catch it early." Screening seems to be the
ACS's knee-jerk solution to just about everything malignant. But
as Dr. Kramer cautions: "There's no high-quality evidence
that shows that skin cancer screening prevents deaths...For all
the increase in diagnosis at early stage, we haven't changed the
risk of dying. We're curing people who didn't need to be cured
in the first place."
Dr. Lisa Schwartz says getting a sunburn should not be a cause
for panic. "You're taking a small risk and raising it
somewhat," she said, "but it's still a small risk."
These are reassuring words in an age when even a slight exposure
Old Sol is seen in some quarters as tantamount to suicide by
sunlight.
The American Cancer Society says that it prides itself on
providing the most up-to-date, accurate information about
cancer-related issues, research, and news. As part of this
effort, they are also committed to dispelling what they call "the
cancer-related rumors and myths that are often spread through
the Internet, email, and everyday conversation." They are
particularly keen on exposing so-called "myths and
half-truths about cancer." In that case, here are a few
"myths and half-truths" that the ACS might consider
investigating:
The myth that, left untreated, many cases of skin cancer
will prove fatal.
The half-truth that exposure to sunlight has been
conclusively proven to increase one's risk of melanoma.
The myth that screening for melanoma has been proven to
extend survival.
The questionable ethics of alarming the public with
willfully misleading advertisements, secretly paid for by a
prominent sunscreen manufacturer.
The myth that one can take money from profit-oriented
corporations without becoming entangled in their business goals.

Atlantic Tropical Storms
Have Doubled
July 29, 2007
By RANDOLPH E. SCHMID
WASHINGTON (AP) - The number of tropical storms developing
annually in the Atlantic Ocean more than doubled over the past
century, with the increase taking place in two jumps,
researchers say.
The increases coincided with rising sea surface temperature,
largely the byproduct of human-induced climate warming,
researchers Greg J. Holland and Peter J. Webster concluded.
Their findings were being published online Sunday by
Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society of London.
An official at the National Hurricane Center called the research
"sloppy science" and said technological improvements in
observing storms accounted for the increase.
From 1905 to 1930, the Atlantic-Gulf Coast area averaged six
tropical cyclones per year, with four of those storms growing
into become hurricanes.
The annual average jumped to 10 tropical storms and five
hurricanes from 1931 to 1994. From 1995 to 2005, the average was
15 tropical storms and eight hurricanes annually.
Even in 2006, widely reported as a mild year, there were 10
tropical storms.
"We are currently in an upward swing in frequency of named
storms and hurricanes that has not stabilized," said Holland,
director of mesoscale and microscale meteorology at the National
Center for Atmospheric Research in Boulder, Colo.
"I really do not know how much further, if any, that it will go,
but my sense is that we shall see a stabilization in frequencies
for a while, followed by potentially another upward swing if
global warming continues unabated," Holland said.
It is normal for chaotic systems such as weather and climate to
move in sharp steps rather than gradual trends, he said.
"What did surprise me when we first found it in 2005 was that
the increases had developed for so long without us noticing it,"
he said in an interview via e-mail.
Holland said about half the U.S. population and "a large slice"
of business are "directly vulnerable" to hurricanes.
"Our urban and industrial planning and building codes are based
on past history," he said. If the future is different, "then we
run the very real risk of these being found inadequate, as was
so graphically displayed by (Hurricane) Katrina in New Orleans."
Hurricanes derive their energy from warm ocean water. North
Atlantic surface temperature increased about 1.3 degrees
Fahrenheit during the 100-year period studied. Other researchers
have calculated that at least two-thirds of that warming can be
attributed to human and industrial activities.
Some experts have sought to blame changes in the sun. But a
recent study by British and Swiss experts concluded that "over
the past 20 years, all the trends in the sun that could have had
an influence on the Earth's climate have been in the opposite
direction to that required to explain the observed rise in
global mean temperatures."
As the sea surface temperatures warm, they cause changes in
atmospheric wind fields and circulations, and these changes are
responsible for the changes in storm frequency, Holland said.
Chris Landsea, science and operations officer at the National
Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's National Hurricane
Center, said the study is inconsistent in its use of data.
The work, he said, is "sloppy science that neglects the fact
that better monitoring by satellites allows us to observe storms
and hurricanes that were simply missed earlier. The doubling in
the number of storms and hurricanes in 100 years that they found
in their paper is just an artifact of technology, not climate
change."
But Kerry Emanuel, a hurricane expert at Massachusetts Institute
of Technology, said the study was significant. "It refutes
recent suggestions that the upward trend in Atlantic hurricane
activity is an artifact of changing measurement systems," said
Emanuel, who was not part of the research team.
Improvements in observation began with aircraft flights into
storms in 1944 and satellite observations in 1970. The
transitions in hurricane activity that were noted in the paper
occurred around 1930 and 1995.
"We are of the strong and considered opinion that data errors
alone cannot explain the sharp, high-amplitude transitions
between the climatic regimes, each with an increase of around 50
percent in cyclone and hurricane numbers," wrote Webster, of
Georgia Institute of Technology, and Holland.
The research was funded by the National Science Foundation.
