Greetings and thank you for

One day without storms for a
two weeks period and today looks like day two as I look out the window.
We need all that rain but less lightening and thunder would make for
being able to work online. I'm going to try to make up lost time today
so will be sitting here and have to remember to get up and do exercises
periodically or I shall regret it. Do you do that? I think most of us
that get involved with computer business fail to take intermittent
exercise periods so I've set a timer to remind me. Getting up and moving
about is very important so don't make the mistake of not doing that...
Hope our weekend is going well and you take your day of rest...

EPA OKs Group of Pesticides
Aug 4, 2006
By H. JOSEF HEBERT
WASHINGTON (AP) - After a decade-long review, the Environmental
Protection Agency has decided to allow continued use of 31 popular but
controversial agricultural pesticides, concluding cumulative exposure
does not pose a health risk.
Although the potential danger of the chemicals, known as
organophosphates, has been assessed individually over the years - and in
some cases their uses curtailed - this was the first time the EPA
examined the chemicals' risk as a group.
They are used extensively in agriculture to control pests on fruits,
vegetables and other crops. They have been targeted by environmentalists
who argue they pose a health risk especially to children. They have been
linked to cancer as well as neurological and fertility problems.
Some health advocates and environmentalists argue all of them should be
replaced with safer alternatives.
Two of the organophosphates - diazonin and chlorpyrifos which once were
widely used to control ants and fleas - have been banned for residential
use.
Seventeen organophosphates have been taken off the market during the
10-year review period. But diazonin and chlorpyrifos as well as 29
others may still be used in agriculture, said the EPA.
In a memorandum dated July 31, the EPA concluded that "the cumulative
risks associated with exposures to all of the (31 chemicals) ... meet
the safety risk standard" under the federal food protection law.
"We believe the approved tolerances" or allowed dose levels "neither
individually or collectively make our food unsafe," Jim Gulliford, the
assistant EPA administrator in charge of the pesticide program, said
Friday in an interview.
Meanwhile, the EPA announced it was ordering another pesticide,
carbofuran, off the market, a decision hailed by environmentalists
because the insecticide has killed millions of birds over the years.
The EPA concluded there are "considerable risks associated with
carbofuran in food and drinking water, risks to pesticide applicators
and risk to birds that are exposed in treated fields." Most uses will be
banned immediately while a small number of uses are to be phased out as
alternatives are found.
Carbofuran is one of a group of pesticides known as known as carbamates.
The overall assessment of that group also is close to being completed.
Under a 1996 food safety law the EPA was charged with re-examining all
of the pesticides it regulates to determine if they pose an unacceptable
health risk to children or other vulnerable population groups. The top
priority was the 48 organophosphates that were sold at the time.
Continued use of the pesticides "represents an egregious abandonment of
EPA's mission to protect the health and well-being of children, farm
workers and rural residents," said Margaret Reeves, a scientist at the
Pesticide Action Network, a San Francisco-based advocacy group.
She said those are the individuals who are "most likely to suffer the
short and long-term health consequences of the continued use of these
hazardous neurotoxins."
Carbofuran, sprayed into the soil, is used to control beetles and other
pests, in corn, sorghum, alfalfa and rice and other crops. Its granular
form was banned in the mid-1990s, after it was found to have killed more
than 2 million birds.
It is still used in liquid form. Conservation groups have argued for
years that it should be banned because of its severe toxicity to birds
including eagles, owls, and hawks.

LENA'S COMMENT: I find this action deplorable. Those
pesticides aren't safe to use around the house but is on our foods?
What's wrong with this picture?

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY!
=======================
Most people assume that in order for drugs to be made available to
patients, those drugs must be unequivocally proven to be effective
through rigorous clinical trials. Yet, surprisingly, this is by no means
always the case. Increasingly, we are seeing the approval of new drugs
on the basis of only the most marginal evidence of effectiveness ? and
the recent FDA decision to approve Gemzar for ovarian cancer is a prime
example of this tendency.
This is also the
first time that the FDA has approved an ovarian cancer drug based upon
progression-free survival (PFS), rather than on the basis of an
improvement in overall survival (OS). The difference between these two
measures is not trivial. Although it sounds like a highly desirable
outcome, "progression-free survival" merely represents an interval of
variable length between the administration of treatment and the point at
which the cancer inexorably starts to advance again. Such delayed
tumor growth does not necessarily equate to an extension of the
patient's lifespan. Indeed, tumors that are arrested temporarily can
then advance more rapidly once they begin growing again, and patients
may actually live no longer than they would if they had not received the
treatment.

Aging Skin Doesn't Have To Cost Thousands!
Of all the physical changes
that occur with age, the most apparent are the changes in your
skin. You may eventually feel the cartilage in your joints
wearing thin, but wrinkles and lines stare back at you every
time you look in the mirror.
Your skin really started aging decades ago
The aging process started taking its toll on your skin in your
thirties as the oil glands began decreasing their output, making
your skin drier. During your forties production of collagen and
elastin (proteins that give skin tissue its structure and
elasticity) declined, and wrinkles and sags probably became more
noticeable. And after the age of 50, all of these mechanisms
gather speed-sometimes at an alarming pace.
Hormones also have an effect. When estrogen levels in your body
decline, all of the tissues in your body begin losing moisture
and thinning out, including your skin.
This deep sea secret diminishes the
appearance of fine lines and wrinkles
All of this drying and thinning is what changes your skin's
appearance. And the best way to keep your skin looking and
feeling younger is to keep it well-moisturized. But please don't
go running to the drugstore to purchase any old moisturizer.
Most over-the-counter moisturizers are filled with chemicals
that can actually dry your skin, even while providing
lubrication to your skin's superficial outer layer.
Try my discovery, no I don't manufacture it just use it, a "deep
sea secret" that keeps your skin moist, and looking young and
healthy. It's a discovery called Squalane that comes from
deep-water sharks-and it does an excellent job of diminishing
the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles in your skin. To learn
more about Squalane,
Click here to check it out.
When applied topically, Squalane is wonderfully moisturizing.
Plus, it contains powerful and effective antioxidants to help
your skin protect itself from free radicals. What this means for
you is younger, firm-looking skin with a healthy, radiant glow.
And since Squalane is so potent, all you need to do is spray a
little on your skin and lightly rub it in. I recommend applying
it every night before you go to bed.
Your skin will feel
smooth, not greasy. Light marine fragrance.

Popular Cancer Drug Linked to
Heart Failure
The cancer drug Gleevec could damage
the heart. A study confirming this was conducted following reports that 10
leukemia patients taking Gleevec developed severe congestive heart failure. The
study found that the drug kills heart muscle cells.
Novartis: More Studies Needed
Gleevec (also sold under the name Glivec) had worldwide sales of $1.2
billion in the first six months of 2006. The manufacturer, Novartis
Pharmaceuticals Corp., argued that further research was needed to fully
understand the potential dangers.
Doctors Need to be Aware
The author of the study stated that he wanted to call attention to the
dangers of Gleevec and similar drugs, so that doctors would be alerted to the
possible problems.

FOOD OF THE WEEK
~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^
Chewy Great Green Stalk!
This particular vegetable is looked on by a lot of
dieters as taboo simply because it is usually a stick that is eaten
while wishing they were eating something else... Little do they know it
is very healthy and once thought of only as medicine! Celery is related
to carrots, parsnips and parsley. Also related to anise, which has a
licorice-like flavor. Was once considered a medicinal herb rather than a
vegetable.
Celery probably originated in the Mediterranean area. It grows wild in
marshy places over a large area covering parts of Sweden south through
Europe, Algeria, Egypt, Asia Minor, the Caucasus and south-eastward
toward the Himalayas. It has also been found growing wild in Tierra del
Fuego (the southernmost tip of South America), California and New
Zealand.
According to Sturtevant, celery was known to the Greeks and Romans only
as a medicine. It was not used as a food, and whether or not it was
cultivated is unclear. Mentions of celery from ancient writings are: "selinon"
from Homer's Odyssey (850 BC), "selinon heleion" from Hippocrates, "eleisoselinon"
from Theophrastus and Dioscorides and "helioselinon" from Pliny and
Palladius. According to the Britannica Encyclopaedia, the Greeks and
Romans used celery as a flavoring. As late as the 16th century. Fuchsius
in 1542, Walafridus Strabo in the 9th century, Tragus in 1552, Pinaeus
in 1561, Pena and Lobel in 1570 and Ruellius Dioscorides in 1529 all
spoke of celery's medicinal properties. As late as 1722, celery was
still referred to as "a herb eaten to purify the blood."
The Chinese also used celery as a medicine. It is mentioned in Chinese
writings from the 5th century AD and in 1640 is described as a
cultivated plant. Cultivation of celery apparently began in the 16th
century in Italy and northern Europe, and in 1623 use of celery as a
food in France is recorded. For the next century, its culinary use was
limited to that of a flavoring. In 1726, celery seed was sold in England
for planting for use of the plant in soups and broths. By the middle of
the 17th century celery stalks and leaves were sometimes eaten with an
oil dressing in France and Italy.
The first celery's known cultivation was similar to the wild plant and
had hollow stalks. In the late 1700's and early 1800's, the cultivated
type was improved and the first celery with large, fleshy succulent
petioles appeared.
According to tests by Researchers at the University of Chicago, celery -
this week's food - reduces cholesterol levels by as much as 7 points
with as little as 2 stalks a day. Celery aids in the process of removing
and preventing cholesterol by increasing bile acid secretion. Celery
also contains butyl phthalide, another nutrient that is said to help
reduce high cholesterol.
Medical experts say that celery is good for people with circulation
problems because celery fights fat. Hence the reason for celery
sticks to munch on when dieting?
Celery contains nutrients that stimulate the elimination of fat
throughout the body says a physician at the University of Italy in
Milan. Celery is good for helping to clean the mouth and teeth during
eating of it raw.
Celery is high in calcium. High calcium intake invigorates the
endocrine system which releases hormones that break down fatty buildup
in cells.
Celery in cholesterol control; By aiding the body's processes in
dissolving already accumulated cholesterol on the interior walls of the
arteries, known as plaque, and helping the liver to metabolize and
prevent additional formation of cholesterol.
Celery root or Celeriac as it is known is another story to be covered at
a later time?
In our house celery's favorite presentation is either stuffed with cream
cheese or peanut butter. Kids love it... but my most favorite and one I
usually like for breakfast is the traditional Waldorf salad. My recipe
below?
Lena's Waldorf Salad
Ingredients:
2 cups chopped apples, (Granny smith or a Sweet tart apple or a
combination of different tart apples)
1 tablespoon lemon juice
1 cup celery, chopped
1/4 cup mayonnaise
1/4 cup chopped walnuts
Sprinkle apples with lemon juice after they are chopped. I usually do
this in the food processor as the apples are chopped up...
Add all other
ingredients.
Toss until all pieces are coated with mayonnaise and serve. Taste is
better if let to set while before serving...
Enjoy this healthful food,
Lena

China Bans Antibiotic Blamed for
Death
Aug 4, 2006
By GILLIAN WONG
BEIJING (AP) - China has banned a domestically produced
antibiotic after a child died from being treated with it and
other patients suffered effects ranging from diarrhea to
anaphylactic shock, the government said Friday.
A 6-year-old girl from Harbin, the capital of northeastern
China's Heilongjiang province, died July 24 after being injected
with the drug produced by a company in the eastern Anhui
province, the official Xinhua News Agency said.
The ban applied to all batches of the drug clindamycin phosphate
glucose - used to treat bacterial infections, produced in the
past two months by Huayuan Worldbest Biology Pharmacy Co., a
notice posted on the Ministry of Health's Web site said.
The ministry notice did not mention whether the drug had caused
any deaths or say how many people were sickened. A press officer
with the ministry who would only give his surname, Ma, said no
other details could be provided as authorities were still
investigating the case.
Xinhua cited the director of Harbin's drug-monitoring center as
saying the girl developed a high fever 20 minutes after the
injection, and slipped into a coma shortly after.
"Based on all materials we have gathered, a preliminary judgment
can be made that the girl was killed due to the injection of the
clindamycin phosphate glucose produced by Anhui's Huayuan
Worldbest Biology Pharmacy Co.," Sun Pengli, the director, was
quoted as saying.
A man working in the production department of Huayuan who
refused to give his name said the company notified authorities
and recalled the product after discovering the problem a couple
of weeks ago. He did not give specific dates.
Production of the drug was immediately stopped, and an internal
investigation is ongoing, he said.
The health ministry said that some patients also reported kidney
pains, stomach aches, nausea, vomiting and chest pains after
using the drug.
China's pharmaceutical industry is highly lucrative but spottily
regulated, enticing some to try to cash in by substituting fake
or substandard ingredients.
In a separate case earlier this year, 11 people were killed
after injecting a drug made by the Qiqihar No. 2 Pharmaceutical
Co. Ltd. in the northeastern province of Heilongjiang.
An investigation showed that the drug, called Armillarisni A,
contained a chemical, diglycol, that can cause kidney failure,
which a vendor had passed off as a normal ingredient.
LENA'S COMMENT: Antibiotics are supposed to help us when in
actuality all are dangerous to your health in ways you cannot
imagine... I have written about this problem and how to
counteract it for a few years now and if you haven't read my
book; Antibiotic Alternatives To Preventing Mega Bacteria
you should... find it at

Deep inside Venezuela's tropical
forest a quiet revolution is taking place
BBC News UK (Greg
Morsbach): Deep inside Venezuela's tropical forest a quiet
revolution is taking place. In the shade of the trees, pink
cocoa pods ripen ready for the next harvest in early November.
The pods carry a white, sticky pulp and the cocoa beans,
which are used to make chocolate.
The type of agriculture being used just outside the village
of Ocumare de la Costa, is having a big impact on the farming
community and its families.
Ocumare is just one of several communities in Venezuela to have
switched from conventional to organic farming and they are now
reaping the rewards.
Organic farmers
Jose Lugo spends
five hours a day nurturing his three hectares of cacao trees to
protect them against pests, insects and bad weather. "We don't
use any artificial fertilizers, just natural compost," he says.
"It's twice as much work as before but it's definitely worth
it."
However, the financial rewards help compensate for the extra
work because organic cocoa beans fetch up to four times as much
as ordinary beans. Mr. Lugo and his friends now earn about $7
for a kilo of beans, whereas they used to get paid just less
than $2 for conventional produce. They no longer sell their
cocoa to local intermediaries, which have been priced out of the
market, but straight to foreign chocolate manufacturers, which
are willing to pay high prices for organic produce.
The farmers have joined forces to form an association of
organic farmers consisting of 50 families.
Organic converts
Behind the thick
white walls of the association building, the cocoa seeds are
fermented for six days in large wooden boxes.
Trina Arevalo says the seeds are then dried in the sun and
points to several clusters of brown beans lying on the patio.
"We keep the cocoa beans here on the yard for six days," she
says. "Then they are cleaned, sorted and weighed. Finally,
they're put into large sacks ready to be exported."
It seems like a lot of hard manual labor, particularly during
the rainy season when floods can wipe out the crops. Only a
week ago, the river burst its banks and destroyed several
hectares of fledgling cocoa plants. Yet, in the last three
years their annual cocoa production has doubled from close to 20
tonnes to more than 40 tonnes, Mrs. Arevalo. "At first we
didn't want to know anything about organic agriculture. It
seemed too much fuss. But you see that we've been converted."
Single-bean cocoa
Much of the funding
to kick-start this new wave of organic farming came from the
Venezuelan government, which has injected some $10m on research
and training, as well as from the European Union via a local
non-governmental organization called Tierra Viva.
- The world's
chocolate gourmets are looking to Venezuelan beans.
Word has reached European and North American chocolate makers
that this Latin American country is the hottest place on the
organic chocolate map. Several Italian, French and American
chocolate manufacturers are buying organic beans from Venezuela.
Like with exclusive claret wines or single malt whiskies, what
the experts value the most is the "single bean origin" label to
denote aroma and purity, and Venezuela can offer just that.
Andrea Trinci, who owns a chocolate factory and shop in Tuscany,
recently visited Venezuela. "Venezuelan cocoa is very fine,
elegant and persistent in its aroma," he says. "I would like to
see more and more organic cocoa being exported, but only at a
just price."
Local production
The local
cocoa producers are now making forays into the production of
their own chocolate bars. Five kilometers down the road from
Ocumare lies the seaside village of Cata, where a handful of
cooperatives have started making their own organic chocolate.
- The sweet smell of melting chocolate
greets visitors as they enter one of the cooperative shops.
Saturmina Diaz is one of six local women involved with the
project, part-funded by the government and local charities. "We
offer a wide range of products such as chocolate punch, wine and
pudding," says Mrs. Diaz. "Lots of foreign tourists come here to
ask us whether we're exporting our merchandise, but so far we
haven't had the financial means to do this. But that's the next
logical step for us."
Facing the world
The cocoa producing
zones of Venezuela, dotted along the Caribbean Coast and Lake
Maracaibo, have gone through something of a revival. Only a few
years ago plantations and farms lay abandoned, following a
series of poor harvests and droughts. However, the roots of
cocoa industry's decline can be traced back a long way.
William Harcourt-Cooze is a British cocoa farmer who bought land
in Venezuela back in the 1990s. "Prior to the discovery of
petroleum here and the subsequent oil boom in the thirties and
forties, cocoa was Venezuela's number one export," he says. "But
the government of President Chavez is aware that cocoa could
once again be one of the country's main exports."
Driving around some of these old cocoa communities, with
their colonial-style churches and village squares, there seems
to be a new sense of pride and purpose in people's faces.
As one elderly farmer puts it, with a smile on his face:
"The world is talking about us again. I've waited a whole
lifetime for that to happen. Sometimes I felt like throwing in
the towel, but now I'm glad I didn't."
