Podiatrists at the Orthopedic Surgery Service at the Madigan Army Medical Center in Fort Lewis, Washington, did a survey of soldiers in basic training who were using many different types of inserts. They were compared to soldiers who wore their boots as issued. The results? Thirty-eight percent of the soldiers using the inserts complained of leg and foot pain. Among those who didn't use inserts, only 29 percent reported foot and leg pain.

Smoking Leads to Rheumatoid Arthritis

(Ivanhoe Newswire) -- Genes play a big role in who we are and the kinds of diseases we are destined to get. But a new study shows genetic risk factors aren't necessary for one group of women who develop a painful joint disease. Smokers can develop rheumatoid arthritis without the most common gene that predisposes people to the disease.

Rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune disorder that worsens over time, making it difficult for sufferers to get around. It causes chronic inflammation of the joints, which leads to destruction of the bones around those joints. It also causes everything from fatigue, weakness and stiffness, to flu-like symptoms, loss of appetite and depression. People with the HLA-DRB1 SE genetic marker are more likely to develop the condition.

Researchers at the University of California, San Francisco, found the link between smoking and the disease after studying women taking part in a large health study in Iowa. Among women without the HLA-DRB1 SE marker, smoking nearly doubled the odds of having rheumatoid arthritis. Women with the gene were had the same risk whether or not they smoked.

LENA'S COMMENT: You hear about lung cancer as the worst that happens with smoking but it isn't!!!! Arthritis isn't the only danger with smoking either! In the doctor's offices I saw a HUGE number of smokers develop heart and kidney disease and/or cancer. Smoking Kills!

Last 7 Months Were Warmest Stretch on Record

The first seven months of 2006 were the warmest such stretch in the continental United States for any year since climate record-keeping began in 1895, federal scientists said. Scorching temperatures in July, particularly strings of hot nights, were almost certainly related in part to the continuing buildup of heat-trapping smokestack and tailpipe gases linked to global warming, said Jay Lawrimore of the National Climatic Data Center. "The long-term trend we're seeing cannot be explained without the influence of greenhouse gases," Mr. Lawrimore said.
