I have no inclination for chatter as my cousin will
be laid to rest later today after being needlessly killed in an auto
accident Friday evening. Death came to her years too soon only because
she did not have her seat belt on, I would like to urge you to fasten
your seat belt anytime you are in an automobile!!!! It can save your
life... Don't write me to say someone was killed because they had their
seat belt on because working in triage for so long I can tell you that
is an extremely rare occurrence, but being killed or maimed for life for
not wearing one is not rare and is happening to someone as I write
this.... Rest in peace Pattsy!

Health Benefits of Folic Acid for Fetus
(Ivanhoe Newswire) -- Thinking of getting pregnant? You
may want to think about folic acid, according to new research. The study
shows women with higher levels of folic acid have babies with increased
birth weight, a marker for a healthy future.
The health benefits of folic acid for babies have been well established,
but in this latest research, doctors from the United Kingdom directly
link folic acid in early pregnancy to the birth weight of the child.
Researchers say current standards are to advise women to take folic acid
at their first pregnancy check-up. However, this means the fetus is
already weeks or even months old before the mom-to-be starts taking the
supplement. So the fetus misses out on folic acid in the beginning
stages of gestation.
For the study, researchers analyzed blood samples from 998 pregnant
women in their first trimester. They noted the amount of folate in their
red blood cells and asked the women lifestyle questions, such as her
smoking habits. Then, they recorded the weight of each baby after it
was born.
Researchers found mothers-to-be with lower levels of folic acid in their
body during early pregnancy were more likely to have a baby with low
birth weight, defined as less than 5.5 pounds. These babies are
50-percent more likely to have a severe disabling condition.
Furthermore, the study reports women with higher levels of folate had
bigger babies. Researchers also report mothers who smoked had lower
levels of folate in their blood which might explain why women who smoke
have babies of lighter weight.
The best way to increase folic acid levels is by taking supplements, but
a woman can also eat folate-rich foods such as green vegetables, citrus
fruits or whole meal products like breads or cereals. Researchers say
the results of this study strengthen the argument for fortifying
everyday foods with folic acid.

Breast Cancer Risk from HRT
(Ivanhoe Newswire) -- A new study further examines the
risk of breast cancer from taking hormone replacement therapy.
Researchers say while the risk is lower than they thought, it does still
exist.
One's breast cancer risk generates from a combination of genetic and
environmental factors. Studies have shown HRT can increase a woman's
risk of developing breast cancer. The Women's Health Initiative trial
was stopped early because of risks of cardiovascular problems and breast
cancer, but then researchers found using the oestrogen-only replacement
portion of the trial may actually reduce the risk of cancer. To help
make sense of all of this data, researchers from the New South Wales
Breast Cancer Institute at the University of Sydney in Australia, found
a way to calculate an individual woman's risk.
Researchers report the risk of breast cancer in women who have not taken
HRT decreases as a woman ages. The risk is 6.1 percent at age 50 and 4.4
percent at age 60. They say the use of HRT increases that risk slightly.
For example, in a 50-year-old woman, the use of oestrogen only therapy
puts her risk at 6.3 percent, and the use of combined HRT puts her risk
at 6.7 percent.
Overall, researchers say the additional breast cancer risk is greater
with combined therapy, especially if taken for five years or longer. A
55-year-old woman who takes combined therapy for five years increases
her risk of breast cancer by 0.6 percent. If she is on it for 10 years,
that increase goes up 1.8 percent.
"Although we found the additional breast cancer risk with hormone
replacement therapy for an individual is very small, the effect on the
general incidence of breast cancer would be greater, especially in
populations with high levels of use," says Professor John Boyeages,
director of the Institute.

The cucumber belongs to the same vegetable family as pumpkin, zucchini,
(which happens to look very much alike.) watermelon and other squashes.
Some say cucumbers are a fruit because the seeds in them will grow the
cuke. I'm not saying they are right or wrong...
First cultivated in Asia in ancient times, it was brought to America by
Columbus, and was eventually grown by both Native Americans and
colonists from Florida to Canada. Today cukes grow in a wide variety of
shapes and sizes, from the 1"-long ones sold as gherkins to mammoth
greenhouse varieties that can reach 20" or longer. Can be found in
grocery stores year round! Healthy and nutritionally sound.
The high water content in cukes make them a great diuretic for those of
you looking to lose weight and/or lower blood pressure. They also are
full of fiber making it perfect to keep your intestinal system moving
right along another great weight loss item as well as lowering blood
pressure.
Cukes are said to be great in helping in the treatment of arthritis
since it helps eliminate uric acid. Its liquid is also said to be a
rejuvenator and makes us feel and look youthful. Now who can't handle
that? If you want to try rejuvenating your skin either puree or slice a
cucumber and apply it on your face, let it sit for a half hour or so
then gently rinse off with warm mineral rich water (mineral rinse; 1
teaspoon liquid minerals to a couple quarts of warm filtered/purified
water). Cukes are touted to have the power to relax and alleviate
sunburn pain as well.

and pepper to taste or with a vinaigrette dressing. You can add a few
slices in a sandwich or you can even juice it along with other
vegetables to add those nutrients. Some people like them steamed like
squash but they lose most of their nutrients when cooked. Some people
have a hard time digesting raw cucumbers, why, I don't know?

been caught eating them straight off the vine in the garden!

research shows it could reduce your risk of heart problems. Scientists
studied 657 people and found that those with periodontal (gum) disease
were more likely to suffer from a narrowing of the blood vessels that
can lead to heart attack or stroke, according to a study in the American
Heart Association journal Circulation. Researchers aren't sure why the
two are linked, though one theory is that the oral bacteria that cause
gum disease spread via the bloodstream, causing inflammation that
results in clogged arteries.

Research Ties Arsenic to Tumor Growth

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) - A study by researchers at the University of
Oklahoma Health Sciences Center indicates environmental arsenic in
drinking water can stimulate the growth of cancerous tumors and cause
them to spread faster.
The study is significant for residents of central Oklahoma, which has
some of the highest arsenic levels in drinking water in the nation.
Michael Ihnat, an assistant professor of cell biology who headed the
research team, said researchers still do not know whether arsenic in
drinking water increases the overall incidence of tumors.
"What we can say pretty definitely is that if you have a pre-existing
tumor, and you're drinking water with arsenic in it, it could very well
increase the growth of that tumor," Ihnat said.
The study shows that arsenic levels as low as four parts per billion
stimulated blood vessel growth, while levels as low as 10 ppb caused
tumors to expand.
The current federal arsenic standard is 50 parts per billion, but that
standard is being lowered to 10 parts per billion on Jan. 23.
The Environmental Protection Agency will present the study to a
congressional subcommittee in November "to really drive home that they
need to reduce the standard to 10 ppb," Ihnat said.
"Between that ten and 50, a lot goes on that's not good," he said.
When environmental arsenic is ingested, it reacts with oxygen to create
free radicals - very reactive forms of normal molecules - which then
stimulate blood vessel growth, Ihnat said. An expansion in blood vessels
means an increase in blood supply to the tumors, which then grow larger,
he said.
Ihnat and his team used mice to conduct the study. For five weeks, they
fed the mice water with arsenic levels between 10 ppb and 200 ppb, and
then implanted cancerous tumors on the animals.
The researchers continued to give them the arsenic water and monitored
the tumors' growth for six more weeks. At the conclusion, Ihnat's team
found that the arsenic increased the growth rate of the tumors, as well
as causing the tumors to spread to the lungs.
Ihnat's study did not conclusively link arsenic ingestion and the
development of cancer, although many studies have tied the two together-
particularly arsenic to the development of skin and bladder cancer -
said Monty Elder, spokeswoman for Oklahoma Department of Environmental
Quality.
However, the Oklahoma State Department of Health, which tracks cancer
cases, has not found clusters of either skin or bladder cancer anywhere
in Oklahoma, said Anne Bliss, epidemiologist at the health department.
Arsenic in Oklahoma's water occurs naturally and is generally found only
in groundwater systems, Elder said.
There are 1,290 groundwater systems in Oklahoma that serve 700,000
people, mostly in rural areas, Elder said. DEQ predicts 25 of those
systems - including Norman, Yukon, Mustang, Weatherford and Nichols
Hills - will have problems meeting the new federal standard of drinking
water, she said.
Elder said it will cost between $55 billion and $163 billion to replace
or upgrade the 25 systems.
The majority of the state's population - 2.8 million people, or 79
percent - are served by 233 surface water systems, which do not have
problems with arsenic levels, she said.
Ihnat said there is little central Oklahoma residents can do to avoid
arsenic-tainted water other than buying bottled water.
"None of the standard filters filter arsenic to any great degree because
it's an element, an ion," Ihnat said. "It's very hard to get out."
High dollar filtration systems, such as the reverse-osmosis filter, can
rid water of arsenic, but Elder said the expense outweighs the cost of
digging a new well or importing water from another area.
Ihnat said his next step is to discover if arsenic levels increase the
risk of developing tumors, and if the process can be interrupted or
reversed. He predicted it will take another year before he has answers.
"If we can do that, then I think we're helping out," Ihnat said.
