Tobacco is a mood-altering, addictive drug
that kills 500,000 Americans a year (200 million worldwide)
Costs $400 billion each year, according to "Smoking and Health
Review," (1992).
The American Lung Association says tobacco contains more than 4,000
chemicals, 60 of which causes cancer.
Some of the 'killers' are radioactivity, arsenic, ammonia, lead,
formaldehyde, nitrogen dioxide, cadmium, phenol, benzene and hydrogen
cyanide (the 'gas chamber' gas that poisons the respiratory enzymes)

Something To Think About
============================
LONDON - British babies will be given a new 5-in-1
vaccine, the government announced this week, amid concern among
health campaigners that the new vaccine could overload childrens' immune
system.
Campaigners say they need more reassurances about the safety of the new
inoculation, which will offer protection against whooping cough,
diphtheria, tetanus, polio and Hib - Haemophilus influenza type b.
Health officials say the new product is safer than the current 4-1
vaccine because it replaces the separate oral polio vaccine, which
contains live virus.
The new vaccine is also safer because the whooping cough component will
no longer contain mercury, they say.
But Jacquie Fletcher of Jabs (Justice, Awareness and Basis Support), a
campaign group for families of vaccine-damaged children, said many
parents were concerned about giving babies jabs that contain multiple
vaccines.
"With 5-in-1 vaccines we would want to know what safety trials have
taken place," she told BBC television. "Increasing the combination
increases the potential for an adverse reaction and restricts choice for
parents, when the government wanted to improve choice."
Parents have already raised much concern about another vaccine, the
triple vaccine for measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) and its possible
link with autism.
The decision to scrap mercury from inoculations came after research in
the United States suggested that a mercury-based preservative in some
childhood vaccines could be linked to autism-like damage in the brains
of mice.
The Department of Health has said there is no evidence of such a link.
"Immunization is the best way to protect children from serious disease
and the routine childhood program has been extremely effective in
achieving this," Health Minister John Sutton said in a statement. "The
changes set out today will further improve the program and benefit
children."
The changes are expected to take place next month when sufficient stocks
of the new vaccine have been amassed.

LENA'S COMMENT: What happens in the UK is soon to happen in the
U.S. so beware and take action before it hits us. Those poor babies
immune system's aren't even working yet and this jolt could prevent it
from ever working properly!

The new C2 Coke is made with a combination of artificial
sweeteners, of which none are good for you, so stay away from it. Here
are two natural cola products called 'China Cola' and 'Reeds Ginger Ale'
soft drinks that use stevia and natural sweeteners. These colas are
wonderful and taste like the original old-fashioned colas of fifty years
ago. They are excellent examples of how sweet-and-natural stevia and
nature's other sweeteners really are. You can find these colas at your
local health food store, co-op, or whole foods market.

ATTENTION DIABETICS!
Add a soy product to your daily food source and see how it helps
your kidneys! Read the article below...
Soy Protein May Benefit Diabetics' Kidneys
August 10, 2004
NEW YORK - The kidney function of people with type 2 diabetes seems to
be improved by dietary soy protein, with the added benefit that their
levels of "good" cholesterol also go up a bit, preliminary research
suggests.
Kidney function often becomes impaired with long-standing diabetes. The
study of 14 older men with diabetes-related kidney disease found that
adding a soy product to their diets reduced the amount of protein in
their urine - an indicator of improved kidney function.
The study is too small to draw conclusions, but the results provide
"initial evidence" that isolated soy protein may help reduce diabetics'
risk of kidney and heart disease, the researchers say.
Dr. John W. Erdman Jr., one of the study's authors, told Reuters Health
he hopes the work will spur larger studies.
It's unclear why soy protein might aid in diabetic kidney disease, but
estrogen-like plant compounds called isoflavones could be involved, said
Erdman, a professor of food science at the University of Illinois at
Urbana-Champaign.
He and his colleagues there and with the Veterans Affairs Illiana Health
Care System in Danville, Illinois, report the findings in the Journal of
Nutrition.
For eight weeks, men in the study used an isolated soy protein powder
that could be added to a drink or food. For another eight weeks, they
used a milk-based protein powder.
The goal, Erdman explained, was to have the men replace part of their
usual protein intake with the soy or milk protein; however, the patients
failed to follow the diet instructions and instead added the protein
powders to their normal routine.
Yet even with the extra protein intake, the men's excretion of protein
in urine fell an average of nearly 10 percent when they consumed the soy
product, the researchers found. In contrast, protein levels in the urine
increased with the milk-based powder. <
In addition, eight weeks on the soy powder boosted the men's levels of
heart-healthy HDL cholesterol by about four percent, while it tended to
dip while the men were on the milk protein.
It's possible, Erdman and his colleagues note, that the estrogen-like
activity of soy isoflavones explain the kidney effects they found,
because kidney disease seems to progress more slowly in women than men,
and estrogen may be a factor. In this study, blood tests showed that as
the men's isoflavone levels increased, their protein excretion declined.
Another possibility, Erdman said, is related to the fact that soy
protein and animal protein have different compositions. While using the
soy powder, the men's blood levels of amino acid called arginine
increased; arginine is a precursor to nitric oxide, a compound that
helps dilate blood vessels.
The study received partial funding from Protein Technologies
International, maker of the soy- and milk-based protein powders used in
the research.

FOOD OF THE
WEEK
~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^
The Really Healthy Disease Proofing Vegetable!
Over the last weeks, if you've read all the Food Of The Week columns you
can see how fruits and vegetables are disease fighters extraordinaire!
This week isn't going to change that and in fact is one of the best yet.
I advocate eating at least 50% to 60% of your foods as raw fruits and
vegetables daily to get the maximum nutritional value out of them.
When it comes to nutritional value, broccoli is at the top. It is rich
in vitamins, high in fiber, low in calories and contains as much calcium
as milk and much healthier. By including broccoli regularly in your diet
you can reduce and prevent ailments like cancer, diabetes, osteoporosis
and heart disease.
Want to know how to beat prostate cancer? Your physician will probably
tell you to take prescription drugs. That's the pharmaceutical industry
trained doctor's answer who has been brainwashed to give that answer.
For a dual killer of those nasty illnesses mix tomato and broccoli, and
even helps reverse breast cancer, colon cancer, leukemia and other
cancers of the body.
Why not something that is safer that your body is built to accept 100%
and is proving to be far better for fighting diseases.
This green vegetable looks like a bush should be on everyone's plate on
a regular basis, if they wish to stay healthy! Has been around for more
than 2000 years. During the 16th century, the plant was grown in Italy
and France. It began to be commercially grown in the United States in
the 1920s. The word "broccoli" derives from the Italian 'Brocco' meaning
arm branch. Broccoli is related to cabbage, cauliflower and Brussels
sprouts.
Broccoli is an antioxidant rich food filled with the minerals Calcium,
Iron, Magnesium, Phosphorus, Potassium,
Sodium, Zinc, Copper, Manganese and Selenium.
Rich in vitamins such as; Vitamin C, Thiamin,
Riboflavin, Niacin, Pantothenic acid,Vitamin B-6,
Folate, Folic acid, Vitamin B-12, Vitamin A,
Retinol and Vitamin E. broccoli really delivers in the
nutrition department.
A University of Illinois-Urbana study found that rats eating a
combination of broccoli and tomatoes had a lower rate of tumor growth
than rats eating broccoli or tomatoes separately. Researcher John
Erdman said the two foods bring out the best in each other, and maximize
the cancer-fighting effect of the nutrients they contain. You might
consider mixing the two for optimum illness fighters!
When choosing broccoli in the market, select organic heads that have
tight and compact bud clusters with an even dark color. The stems should
be a lighter green than the buds and easy to pierce with a fingernail.
Avoid stalks with yellowed or open bud clusters and stems that are hard
and dry. Broccoli can be stored, unwashed, in a plastic bag in the
refrigerator crisper for days. Before use, wash by rinsing in
purified/filtered water with a splash of vinegar for disinfectant.
Our favorite ways of eating broccoli are steamed with a splash of
seasoned rice vinegar, or raw with other veggies as a salad with lemon
juice and virgin olive oil or flax seed oil as dressing. Also we like
raw broccoli flowerets with sliced tomatoes and sliced sweet onions.
Grandchildren like them with a bit of ranch dressing, which I don't
think of as healthy but a little once in a while isn't going to kill
them and it gets them to eat the broccoli! I try to make it fresh so
it's not quite as lethal.
Here is a great recipe:
Broccoli with Garlic
1 bunch of broccoli, OR 1 pound of frozen chopped broccoli
2 medium fresh tomatoes (cut into bite size pieces)
6 garlic cloves
1 to 2 tablespoons olive oil
1/2 teaspoon sea salt
2 tablespoons purified/filtered water
1/4 teaspoon hot (cayenne) pepper (optional)
Wash broccoli and cut into small florets. Cut the tender parts of the
stem into smallish cubes or save add to stew or make Broccoli Slaw.
Steam in a microwave steamer or over boiling water until barely tender
and still bright green (about 3-1/2 to 5 minutes in a microwave,
depending on the volume of broccoli and water). Don't overcook! For
all cruciferous, this is a very important guideline!
Place olive oil in a skillet over medium heat. Chop or mince the
garlic. When the oil is hot, add the salt, then the garlic.
Sauté
stirring frequently, just until the garlic starts to soften. Quickly
add the water, and the cayenne if desired. Turn heat low and simmer for
a couple of minutes.
Place the broccoli and fresh tomatoes in a large glass or crockery
serving bowl. Pour the garlic mixture over it, mixing gently to coat
each piece evenly. Serve and enjoy.
Chill leftovers and add to salad the next day.
Now go get some broccoli for your next meal, enjoy and know you are
eating for health!

Prozac found in drinking water
August 10, 2004
LONDON - Traces of the anti-depressant Prozac have been found in
the drinking water supply, setting off alarm bells with
environmentalists concerned about potentially toxic effects.
The Observer said that a report by the government's environment
watchdog found Prozac was building up in river systems and
groundwater used for drinking supplies.
The exact quantity of Prozac in the drinking water was unknown,
but the Environment Agency's report concluded Prozac could be
potentially toxic in the water table.
Experts say that Prozac finds its way into rivers and water
systems from treated sewage water, and some believe the drugs
could affect reproductive ability.
A spokesman for the Drinking Water Inspectorate said Prozac was
likely to be found in a considerably watered down form that was
unlikely to pose a health risk.
"It is extremely unlikely that there is a risk, as such drugs
are excreted in very low concentrations," the spokesman said.
"Advanced treatment processes installed for pesticide removal
are effective in removing drug residues."
But environmentalists called for an urgent investigation into
the findings.
Norman Baker, environment spokesman for the Liberal Democrats,
said it looked "like a case of hidden mass medication upon the
unsuspecting public".
"It is alarming that there is no monitoring of levels of Prozac
and other pharmacy residues in our drinking water," he told the
Observer.
The Environment Agency has held a series of meetings with the
pharmaceutical industry to discuss any repercussions for human
health or the ecosystem, the Observer said.
Prescription of anti-depressants has surged in Britain. In the
decade up to 2001, overall prescriptions of antidepressants rose
from 9 million to 24 million a year, the paper said.
PORTSMOUTH, N.H. (AP) - Scientists looking into air quality and climate
change have found pollutants from as far as Asia over New England and
the Atlantic.
It is the first time Asian pollution plumes have been observed over the
East Coast and suggests that American air quality could be threatened as
Asian countries become more industrialized.
"We have to be concerned whether the cost of continuing to ratchet up
emission controls is not going to be offset by growing pollution coming
to us from Asia," Daniel Jacob, a Harvard University researcher, told
The Boston Globe.
"At some point, it may be cheaper to sell pollution control equipment to
China," he said.
The Asian pollution was spotted above Portsmouth and other locations
this by the International Consortium for Atmospheric Research on
Transport and Transformation, an air quality study billed as the
largest, most comprehensive ever done. The six-week study by researchers
from six nations began July 5.
"I think what you're going to see in five to 10 years' time, when you
get a better handle on the long-range transport, is that pollution is
traveling from continent to continent and there may need to be some new
agreements put into place," said Robert Talbot, a University of New
Hampshire's scientist.
Talbot also believes results of a parallel New England Air Quality Study
may surprise the region, which often blames other regions for creating
the smog that drifts in on prevailing winds.
"I think there's quite a bit of pollution generated within the region
that we're not really recognizing," said Talbot.
The Asian pollution was identified through chemical fingerprints -
halocarbons produced only in Chinese industry, said Jacob.
"I think the most profound thing that you draw from this is that the
globe is one air shed," said Armond Cohen, director of the Clean Air
Task Force, a Boston-based nonprofit.
"Right now, there's a lot of interest in the community about this
influence of Asian pollution and whether it can compromise our ability
to achieve regional air quality objectives," said Jacob.
"We knew the transport from Asia was efficient in the spring, but we
didn't know it was so prevalent in the summer," Talbot said.
Three years ago, an Asian storm sent dust across the United States,
sprinkling it as far as New Hampshire. Forest fires raging through
Quebec in 2002 blanketed New England and much of the East Coast. And
divisive battles long have been fought over border-crossing gases.
In recent years, Northeastern states have been suing over the pollution
blown from the Midwest, blaming power plants for producing acid rain and
ozone, and, most recently, exacerbating global warming. In 1991, the
United States signed a treaty with Canada agreeing to reduce U.S.
emissions blamed for spoiling lakes and forests with acid rain.
LENA'S COMMENT: This news already has the big companies using it
as a reason to not cut their emissions. Now how's that for stupidity? We
should be just as diligent, or more so, in order to cut as much
pollution as possible, but the chemical lobby groups are making that
very difficult as they are backing our present leaders... So pay close
attention to the politicians, who are being backed by big industry, to
start spouting rhetoric pertaining to this report as reasons for not
passing pollution bills.
