Desert Shrub May Help Some Cancer Patients - Study

WASHINGTON - Chaparral, an evergreen desert shrub widely discredited as
a purported cancer cure, may shrink some tumors when processed and used
properly, U.S. researchers reported.
Initial tests on patients show that, when injected, it does not cause
some of the serious liver damage associated with the plant, the
researchers told a conference. And tests in patients with head and neck
cancer show it may shrink tumors.
Chaparral, also known as creosote bush, has given its name to areas of
the Southwest where it dominates the landscape.
Native Americans used chaparral to treat cancer, colds, wounds,
bronchitis, warts, blemishes and ringworm.
"Chaparral tea was used widely in the United States as an alternative
anti-cancer agent from the late 1950s to the 1970s," the American Cancer
Society said in a statement. "Research has not found it to be an
effective treatment for cancer or any other disease."
Studies showed it could damage the liver and kidneys and the Food and
Drug Administration warned against its use.
Dr. Terry Day of the Medical University of South Carolina and colleagues
tested an extract taken from chaparral called nordihydroguaiaretic acid,
specifically a derivative of this compound called M4N.
They injected it into the tumors of eight patients with advanced head
and neck cancer in a Phase I safety study.
They saw some evidence it killed the tumors in these patients, who had
advanced, otherwise untreatable forms of head and neck cancer.
"This study revealed that M4N was generally well-tolerated without
direct toxicity," Day told the 6th International Conference on Head and
Neck Cancer in Washington.
They now plan a larger, Phase II study aimed at showing whether the drug
really works.
Head and neck cancer is very common in the United States, with more than
40,000 new cases diagnosed every year and around 11,000 deaths a year.
About 55 percent of patients survive for five years.
It is usually treated with surgery and radiation although a few drugs
have shown some promise. Because patients usually do not realize they
have cancer until it has spread, it is very hard to treat.

LENA'S COMMENT: This very same bush has been used very
successfully by the Native Americans in treating Herpes and other
viruses for many years and now this verifies their medical knowledge. If
you want an abscess gone in a hurry try a warm poultice with the leaves
of the bush.
Poultice instruction: Barely cover 2 cups of Chaparral leaves with
water, bring to a boil, turn burner off and let set for a few minutes,
then put leaves into a wool or cotton cloth and apply to abscess when
cool enough to stand it... (Be careful not to burn with too hot of a
poultice!)
I bet that some drug company is waiting in the wings with a chemical
version that will be marketed as "the thing to cure cancer" and may
already have it ready for marketing sometime in the next six months to a
year! Chemical can never match the natural version of anything, as hard
as man wants to believe that it's possible, It isn't!

What is generally thought of as a food is a great deal more!
Honey has long been known in folk medicine circles as a "magic elixir."
Known to have antioxidant properties, which we know is necessary to ward
off illness and diseases. After adding 4 tablespoons of buckwheat honey
to their daily diet, participants in a study showed an increase in their
levels of antioxidants in their blood. But when it comes to
antioxidants, not all honey is created equal: The darker the honey, the
more antioxidants it has.
Vitamins in honey are said to be A, B1 (Thiamin), B2 (Riboflavin),
Nicotinic acid (niacin), B6 (Pyridoxine), B12 (Cyanocobaltamine, C
(Ascorbic acid), D, E (Tocopherol), H (Biotin), Pantothenic acid and Folic acid. Minerals in honey are said to be Calcium, Copper, Iodine, Iron, Magnesium, Phosphorous, Potassium,
Sodium and Zinc. Honey has tested out to have
antibacterial properties as well as sterilizing of wounds and sores.
Whether it's the make up or the way the different vitamins and minerals
are put together in honey, we don't know but it is a known medicinal
addition.
Honey is known to improve food assimilation and useful for chronic and
infective intestinal problems such as constipation, duodenal ulcers and
liver disturbances. Reports abound with successful treatment of various
gastrointestinal disorders. Honey, when poured into open wounds, bed
sores, ulcers, varicose ulcers and burns, twice a day heals the worst of
the worst. It prevents infections, promotes tissue regeneration, and
reduces scarring best when used in its pure, unprocessed form. If
applied immediately, honey reduces blistering of burns and speeds
regeneration of new tissue. Many case histories are reported.
Homogenized honey isn't useful for anything but a sweetener as the
healing properties are removed in the homogenization process.
In the alternatives health communities honey is a well known remedy for
colds and mouth, throat or bronchial irritations and infections. The
benefits, apart from antibacterial effects, are assumed to relate to the
soothing and relaxing effect of fructose.
Honey, beeswax, and various other bee products have quite a following in
many Asian countries, as well as in Russia and the rest of Eastern
Europe. One of the biggest health claims is that bee venom cures
multiple sclerosis, but I find no historical cases to back up the claim
even though I've read of people using bee stings for that purpose as
well as for arthritis.
Honey is far better to use as a sweetener for diabetics than sugar as
insulin levels are lower when compared to the uptake of equal caloric
values of other foods. My belief is, nature made our body's to react to
natural substances better than man made sugar, any some data exists to
back up that belief.
Then, there's the purity of beeswax candles compared to the paraffin
candles most people burn in their homes. I hate to break it to you
romantic types, but paraffin candles are just a spiffed-up version of
petroleum products with large doses of chemical fragrance. And they
release decidedly unromantic elements, such as soot and smoke, while
burning.
Burning paraffin candles has been compared to breathing in diesel fumes.
I don't know about you, but that would kill the mood for me. But beeswax
candles don't have that problem. In fact, burning beeswax produces
negative ions, which are nature's air purifiers.
Honey can be used as an alternative to sugar in baking, cereals and any
thing you want to add a bit of flavor!
If you find yourself with a cough and sore throat this winter make your
own cough syrup.
Prepare a triple-strength tea by simmering the herbs in water for 10
minutes, then steeping for 20 minutes. Strain the tea, then stir in
honey and glycerin while the tea is still warm. Add optional essential
oil. Take 1 tablespoon at a time. Stored in a cool place, this syrup
will keep for 2 weeks. In the refrigerator, it will keep for several
months.
Recipe #2
Cough Syrup Recipe
6 fresh garlic cloves (minced)
2 cups purified/filtered water
1 tablespoon pure lemon juice
3/4 cup honey
Bring water and minced garlic to a boil. Turn burner off and let steep
for about 20 minutes.
Put into Vita Mixer and liquefy (no vitamixer - let set until cool, then
strain). Add lemon juice and honey, mix well and let sit until cool,
then refrigerate.
1 Tablespoon three or four times a day. Much better than OTC cough
preparations!
Suitable for children, but not for infants, who should not have
honey.

Ginseng shows potential as Parkinson's
treatment

HALIFAX ? The ancient Chinese believed ginseng could help treat
everything from lung ailments to stomach problems to psychiatric
conditions. Now a thoroughly modern 21st-century researcher says
the perennial herb may well be an effective treatment for
Parkinson's disease.
Dr. Harold Robertson was skeptical when first approached by two
members of his lab interested in exploring the use of ginseng as
a possible means of replacing dopamine cells in patients with
Parkinson's disease.
"I wasn't really sure it was going to have any effect at all,
(but) I let them play," the head of the department of
pharmacology at Dalhousie University said. However, "When I saw
the results, I was convinced."
In the first study conducted by Dr. Robertson and his
colleagues, some rats were given a commercial preparation of
ginseng in their drinking water.
Others received only plain water. The rats were then injected
with MPP+, a drug that induces Parkinson's disease. The drug has
become a reliable model for Parkinson's disease since it gained
notoriety in the 1980s following an outbreak of PD among drug
addicts in California. The addicts had been trying to synthesize
Demerol, but instead came up with a precursor of MPP+. Virtually
everyone who injected this drug developed Parkinson's disease.
A number of behavioural results are associated with MPP+. In
rats who had been sipping on ginseng, these results failed to
occur. Further exploration found that the dopamine neurons in
animals injected only with MPP+ were dead. Surprisingly, in
animals that had received ginseng, virtually 100% of the neurons
were alive, said Dr. Robertson.
The research, first published in Experimental Neurology, was
then replicated in mice, and the same effects were discovered.
"This is evidence that it would work in vivo," said Dr.
Robertson, whose research interests are in the area of gene
expression in long-term changes in the brain and dopaminergic
neurotransmission.
"The literature suggests that ginseng is protective of neurons,"
he noted, "but the exciting thing to me is that we're giving
this orally."
The Dalhousie team, which also includes Dr. Bob Drobitch, a
member of the College of Pharmacy at Dalhousie and Dr. Jackalina
Van Kampen, a postdoctoral fellow in Dr. Robertson's lab, found
that the protective effects of ginseng lasted for about 48
hours.
The implications for treating patients is significant, noted Dr.
Robertson. "When we first diagnose patients with Parkinson's
disease most people aren't very ill with the disease. They have
a lot of healthy neurons left. If we could start treating people
as soon as they are diagnosed, we could stop the process.
"We believe ginseng has the potential to do this," he added. "We
would effectively have a cure for the disease."
Dr. Robertson is not advocating those with Parkinson's begin
consuming large quantities of ginseng. Indeed, more research is
needed and he is now exploring the possibility of doing a
limited clinical trial. "It requires almost nothing to set up,"
he said. "There are no really serious side-effects."
Phelps Dodge Fined, Pleads Guilty in Bird Deaths
August 12, 2004
NEW YORK - Phelps Dodge Morenci Inc., a unit of world No. 2 copper
producer Phelps Dodge Corp., pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor charge in
the deaths of 43 migratory birds near its mine at Morenci, Arizona, and
will pay a maximum fine of $15,000, the U.S. Department of Justice said.
The plea in federal district court in Phoenix came after the company was
charged with violating the U.S. Migratory Bird Treaty Act in the deaths
of the birds, which were identified as being species protected under the
act.
More than 60 birds were found dead between October 2000 and March 2001
near confined waters polluted by the mining process at the Morenci mine
site, east of Tucson, and since then additional dead birds have been
found nearby, according to court papers in the case that were obtained
by Reuters.
A number of bodies of water near Morenci have high concentrations of
sulfuric acid and copper compounds, and lab studies have demonstrated
that ingesting these is lethal to migratory birds because the toxins
cause severe irritation and corrosion of the gastrointestinal tract.
Great blue herons, northern pintails, pied-billed grebes and western
kingbirds were listed among the 12 migratory species found dead near the
Morenci site, court papers said.
A DOJ spokesman said he could not comment on whether other mining
companies were being investigated for similar violations under the
migratory bird act.
Under the terms of the plea agreement, Phelps Dodge Morenci will pay
$15,000 for one count of violating the act and also complete a
Corrective Action Plan as a condition of its probation in a move to end
the bird deaths at Morenci.
The company also agreed to donate $10,000 to one or more federally
licensed rehabilitators to care for sick and/or injured birds and to pay
up to $80,000 to fund a study of possible projects to enhance or create
migratory bird habitat within the Gila/Salt/Verde River Ecosystem.
"Phelps Dodge deserves recognition for engaging in creative problem
solving solutions to better protect migratory birds while performing
their business operations," said Thomas Sansonetti, Assistant Attorney
General for the Justice Department's Environment and Natural Resources
Division.
"We hope that other companies will follow suit and take the initiative
to protect the future of migratory birds and song birds under the
Migratory Bird Treaty Act," he added.
Aside from Morenci, Phelps Dodge operates copper and molybdenum mines in
Arizona at Bagdad and Green Valley, as well as a mine and smelter at
Claypool and two mines in neighboring New Mexico.
The company also hopes to open another mine in southern Arizona near
Safford.
