I'm living in the

our mountain valley feels just like a sauna and it's hard to get away
from if you have to go outside... If that humidity would just turn loose
in the form of rain it would be so nice... Oh well mother nature is out
of my hands so I live with it. Certainly glad I can take control of my
life outside of mother nature. Have you taken control and found out how
to truly be healthy? I hope so, if not find out today for quality of

US Slipping in Life
Expectancy Rankings
Aug 12, 2007
By STEPHEN OHLEMACHER
WASHINGTON (AP) - Americans are living longer than ever, but not as long
as people in 41 other countries.
For decades, the United States has been slipping in international
rankings of life expectancy, as other countries improve health care,
nutrition and lifestyles.
Countries that surpass the U.S. include Japan and most of Europe, as
well as Jordan, Guam and the Cayman Islands.
"Something's wrong here when one of the richest countries in the world,
the one that spends the most on health care, is not able to keep up with
other countries," said Dr. Christopher Murray, head of the Institute for
Health Metrics and Evaluation at the University of Washington.
A baby born in the United States in 2004 will live an average of 77.9
years. That life expectancy ranks 42nd, down from 11th two decades
earlier, according to international numbers provided by the Census
Bureau and domestic numbers from the National Center for Health
Statistics.
Andorra, a tiny country in the Pyrenees mountains between France and
Spain, had the longest life expectancy, at 83.5 years, according to the
Census Bureau. It was followed by Japan, Macau, San Marino and
Singapore.
The shortest life expectancies were clustered in Sub-Saharan Africa, a
region that has been hit hard by an epidemic of HIV and AIDS, as well as
famine and civil strife. Swaziland has the shortest, at 34.1 years,
followed by Zambia, Angola, Liberia and Zimbabwe.
Researchers said several factors have contributed to the United States
falling behind other industrialized nations. A major one is that 45
million Americans lack health insurance, while Canada and many European
countries have universal health care, they say.
But "it's not as simple as saying we don't have national health
insurance," said Sam Harper, an epidemiologist at McGill University in
Montreal. "It's not that easy."
Among the other factors:
- Adults in the United States have one of the highest obesity rates in
the world. Nearly a third of U.S. adults 20 years and older are obese,
while about two-thirds are overweight, according to the National Center
for Health Statistics.
"The U.S. has the resources that allow people to get fat and lazy," said
Paul Terry, an assistant professor of epidemiology at Emory University
in Atlanta. "We have the luxury of choosing a bad lifestyle as opposed
to having one imposed on us by hard times."
- Racial disparities. Black Americans have an average life expectancy of
73.3 years, five years shorter than white Americans.
Black American males have a life expectancy of 69.8 years, slightly
longer than the averages for Iran and Syria and slightly shorter than in
Nicaragua and Morocco.
- A relatively high percentage of babies born in the U.S. die before
their first birthday, compared with other industrialized nations.
Forty countries, including Cuba, Taiwan and most of Europe had lower
infant mortality rates than the U.S. in 2004. The U.S. rate was 6.8
deaths for every 1,000 live births. It was 13.7 for Black Americans, the
same as Saudi Arabia.
"It really reflects the social conditions in which African American
women grow up and have children," said Dr. Marie C. McCormick, professor
of maternal and child health at the Harvard School of Public Health. "We
haven't done anything to eliminate those disparities."
Another reason for the U.S. drop in the ranking is that the Census
Bureau now tracks life expectancy for a lot more countries - 222 in 2004
- than it did in the 1980s. However, that does not explain why so many
countries entered the rankings with longer life expectancies than the
United States.
Murray, from the University of Washington, said improved access to
health insurance could increase life expectancy. But, he predicted, the
U.S. won't move up in the world rankings as long as the health care
debate is limited to insurance.
Policymakers also should focus on ways to reduce cancer, heart disease
and lung disease, said Murray. He advocates stepped-up efforts to reduce
tobacco use, control blood pressure, reduce cholesterol and regulate
blood sugar.
"Even if we focused only on those four things, we would go along way
toward improving health care in the United States," Murray said. "The
starting point is the recognition that the U.S. does not have the best
health care system. There are still an awful lot of people who think it
does."
Census
Bureau /
National Center for Health Statistics
LENA'S COMMENT: How sad is that. The
supposed country with the supposed best health care system in the world
taking a back seat to 41 other countries that aren't suppose to know
what our medical world knows. Tells me someone has an inflated ego and
continues to lie to us!

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY!

Lower
back pain has long been connected to hard work and heavy lifting. But
extended periods of bed rest can also bring it on.
And here's why, in case you ever wondered: Muscles have large movements
and small ones, says the European Journal of Medical Research. But when
people are immobilized, the muscles can only make tiny movements. That,
researchers say, can lead to muscle cramping and lower back pain. So,
the standard treatment for lower back pain from too much exercise is bed
rest. And the treatment for back pain from bed rest? You guessed it:
exercise. First make sure you are getting sufficient
purified/filtered water inside and out! If so then exercise!

August is the beginning of

Every year August begins the talks to push
people into getting a flu shot. Well, is it a good idea? Not in my opinion and
here is a really good reason to back up my premise - not to have one!
Bush Plans to Veto Removal of Mercury From Infant Vaccines
July 24, 2007
CALL - 877-985-2695
Despite a 2004 presidential campaign promise to the contrary, this
administration continues to allow the mercury-containing vaccine preservative
thimerosal to be added to childhood flu vaccines.
Thousands of parents believe the preservative has caused mercury poisoning and
autism in their children. Still, President Bush plans to veto the HHS-Labor-Education
Appropriations Bill, which includes a measure to ban childhood flu vaccines that
contain thimerosal, because of the cost and ?objectionable provisions.?
As it stands, flu vaccines which contain thimerosal, are recommended for all
pregnant women, infants and children, even though the Institute of Medicine
recommended in 2001 that these population groups not be exposed to thimerosal-containing
vaccines.
One in every six women of childbearing age has enough mercury in their
bloodstream to cause neurological damage to their unborn children, according to
the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

Failing
eyesight: It can be caused by too much processed foods
July 23, 2007
by Healthy News Service
Processed foods such as white rice, pasta and bread may make
your eyesight worse, especially as you get older.
These types of foods - carbohydrates with a high glycemic index
- can cause age-related macular degeneration, a common problem
among older people.
People whose diets are high in processed foods are much more
likely to develop AMD, researchers from Tufts University, near
Boston, have discovered.
High-glycaemic foods cause a faster rise and fall in blood sugar
levels, and they have previously been associated with an
increased risk of diabetes.
The Tufts researchers analysed data on 4,099 people who were
participating in an eye-health study. They estimate that up to
20 per cent of cases of AMD could have been prevented had the
patients eaten far less processed foods.
Even a simple dietary change of replacing white bread with whole
grain bread could have reduced the risk.
AMD typically occurs after middle age, and it is a leading cause
of irreversible blindness.

Carbon
Market Encourages Chopping Forests - Study
by Deborah Zabarenko
August 14, 2007
WASHINGTON - The current carbon market actually encourages
cutting down some of the world's biggest forests, which would
unleash tonnes of climate-warming carbon into the atmosphere, a
new study reported on Monday.
Under the Kyoto Protocol aimed at stemming climate change, there
is no profitable reason for the 10 countries and one French
territory with 20 percent of Earth's intact tropical forest to
maintain this resource, according to a study in the journal
Public Library of Science Biology.
The Kyoto treaty and other talks on global warming focus on
so-called carbon credits for countries and companies that plant
new trees where forests have been destroyed. Trees and other
plants absorb carbon dioxide, a greenhouse gas emitted by
petroleum-fueled vehicles, coal-fired power plants and humans.
At this point, there is no credit for countries that keep the
forests they have, the study said.
"The countries that haven't really been the target of
deforestation have nothing to sell because they haven't
deforested anything," said Gustavo Fonseca, one of the study's
authors.
PERVERSE INCENTIVE
"So that creates a perverse incentive for them to actually
start deforesting, so that in the future, they might be allowed
to actually cap-and-trade, as they call it: you put a cap on
your deforestation and you trade that piece that hasn't been
deforested," Fonseca said in a telephone interview.
The countries most at risk for this kind of deforestation,
because they all have more than half their original forests
intact, are Panama, Colombia, Democratic Republic of Congo,
Peru, Belize, Gabon, Guyana, Suriname, Bhutan and Zambia, along
with the French territory of French Guiana.
These places need a system of credits to involve them in the "global
deforestation avoidance market," said Fonseca, of the World
Bank's Global Environment Facility.
Under this kind of system, these countries could agree to keep
deforestation rates below the global average and get credit for
how much below the average they are, Fonseca said.
These market mechanisms are still being worked out and are
likely to be debated at a series of international meetings on
climate change this year at the United Nations, in Washington
and in Bali, Indonesia.
Besides curbing greenhouse gas emissions, this system could
offer other benefits that intact forests provide, according to
Russell Mittermeier, a study co-author and president of the
environmental group Conservation International.
Intact forests protect watersheds, encourage pollination and
preserve biodiversity, Mittermeier said by telephone.
Mittermeier said perhaps 20 to 25 percent of world carbon
emissions come from the destruction of tropical forest, but this
issue is not at the center of the global warming discussion.
"People are talking a lot about vehicle emissions, industrial
emissions, biofuels and recycling," Mittermeier said. "Forests
were barely in there and yet forests are ... perhaps the major
contributor" to global climate change.
