Tobacco is a mood-altering, addictive drug that kills 500,000 Americans a year (200 million worldwide)
Costs $400 billion each year, according to "Smoking and Health Review," (1992).

The American Lung Association says tobacco contains more than 4,000 chemicals, 60 of which causes cancer.
Some of the 'killers' are radioactivity, arsenic, ammonia, lead, formaldehyde, nitrogen dioxide, cadmium, phenol, benzene and hydrogen cyanide (the 'gas chamber' gas that poisons the respiratory enzymes)

Something To Think About
===================

According to the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA),

"Adverse drug reactions are the fourth leading cause of death in America. Reactions to prescription and over-the-counter medications kill far more people annually than all illegal drug use combined."

Dr. David Graham Associate Director for Science and Medicine in the FDA Office of Drug Safety states: "I would argue that the FDA as currently configured is incapable of protecting America against another Vioxx. Simply put, FDA and the Center for Drug Evaluation Research (CDER) are broken.
As currently configured, the FDA is not able to adequately protect the American public. It's more interested in protecting the interests of industry. It views industry as its client, and the client is someone whose interest you represent. Unfortunately, that is the way the FDA is currently structured.

For six decades this policy has been accepted as a reasonable means of preventing tooth decay. Just one problem: Fluoride isn't good for us. And it's been shown to actually HARM teeth in some cases. Even more troubling: A number of studies have linked fluoride to as many as 10,000 cancer deaths each year, with a high incidence of bone cancer among men exposed to fluoride.

Wholesale Drug Prices Top Inflation
Aug 16, 2005
By RANDOLPH E. SCHMID

WASHINGTON (AP) - Wholesale prices for the brand-name prescription drugs widely used by older Americans rose at more than twice the rate of inflation during the year that ended March 31, the AARP says.

The price charged by manufacturers climbed 6.6 percent for a sample of 195 drugs. That's down from the 7.1 percent increase in the year that ended Dec. 31 but still well ahead of the 3 percent general inflation rate, the organization said in a report for release Tuesday.

"We are very disappointed that brand name manufacturers have failed to keep their price increases in line with inflation and we will continue to educate our members and the public about how best to find the most affordable prescription drugs to suit their needs," AARP chief executive William Novelli said.

The Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America accused AARP of using "fuzzy math."

Prescription drug prices have risen less than overall medical costs, the trade group said. And, PhRMA vice president Ken Johnson added, starting next January seniors will get savings on medicines by enrolling in Medicare's new prescription program.

The study by AARP's Public Policy Institute and the University of Minnesota found price increases for 110 brand-name drugs sampled.

For a typical older person taking three prescription drugs daily, the increase for the year ended March 31 translates to an extra $144.15 cost per year, if they use brand name products and the full price increase is passed along to the consumer, according to AARP,

Looking at the first three months of this year, the study found the biggest price increase, 6.1 percent, was for insulin sensitizing drugs for diabetics. Tied for second with 5.9 percent increases were two types of blood pressure drugs, angiotensin II receptor antagonists and calcium channel blockers.

The single largest increase was 9.5 percent for Combivent, an aerosol drug that improves breathing by helping open bronchial tubes.

The researchers also looked at generic prescription drugs. Overall costs were up 0.7 percent in a check of 75 drugs for the year ended March 31. Only three of the drugs had an increase in the first three months of this year, the report said.

A Garden Produces More Than Just Veggies!

As I watched the bees buzz around our garden I got to thinking about the contribution that will come from their buzzing and gathering nectar… Honey being the top one along with a few others! A garden gives off more than just vegetables!

Bees, just like medicine, has their specialty field as you will see when reading this article.

Honey that has long been known in folk medicine circles as a "magic elixir" is known to have antioxidant properties, which we know is necessary to ward off illness and diseases. After adding 4 tablespoons of buckwheat honey (buckwheat honey comes from bees that gather their pollen from the buckwheat plant only) to their daily diet, participants in a study showed an increase in their levels of antioxidants in their blood. But when it comes to antioxidants, not all honey is created equal: The darker the honey, the more antioxidants it has.

Vitamins in honey are said to be A, B1 (Thiamin), B2 (Riboflavin), Nicotinic acid (niacin), B6 (Pyridoxine), B12 (Cyanocobaltamine, C (Ascorbic acid), D, E (Tocopherol), H (Biotin), Pantothenic acid and Folic acid. Minerals in honey are said to be Calcium, Copper, Iodine, Iron, Magnesium, Phosphorous, Potassium, Sodium and Zinc. Honey has tested out to have antibacterial properties as well as sterilizing of wounds and sores. Whether it's the make up or the way the different vitamins and minerals are put together in honey, we don't know but it is a known medicinal addition.

Honey is known to improve food assimilation and useful for chronic and infective intestinal problems such as constipation, duodenal ulcers and liver disturbances. Reports abound with successful treatment of various gastrointestinal disorders. Honey, when poured into open wounds, bed sores, ulcers, varicose ulcers and burns, twice a day heals the worst of the worst. It prevents infections, promotes tissue regeneration, and reduces scarring best when used in its pure, unprocessed form. If applied immediately, honey reduces blistering of burns and speeds regeneration of new tissue. Many case histories are reported of this happening. Homogenized honey isn't useful for anything but a sweetener as the healing properties are removed in the homogenization process.

In the alternatives health communities non-homogenized honey is a well known remedy for colds and mouth, throat or bronchial irritations and infections. The benefits, apart from antibacterial effects, are assumed to relate to the soothing and relaxing effect of fructose.

Honey, beeswax, and various other bee products have quite a following in many Asian countries, as well as in Russia and the rest of Eastern Europe. One of the biggest health claims is that bee venom cures multiple sclerosis, but I find no historical cases to back up the claim even though I've read of people using bee stings for that purpose as well as for arthritis.  I don't doubt it though...

Honey is far better to use as a sweetener for diabetics than sugar as insulin levels are lower when compared to the uptake of equal caloric values of other foods. My belief is, nature made our body's to react to natural substances better than man made sugar, and some data exists to back up that belief.

Then, there's the purity of beeswax candles compared to the paraffin candles most people burn in their homes. I hate to break it to you romantic types, but paraffin candles are just a spiffed-up version of petroleum products with large doses of chemical fragrance. And they release decidedly unromantic elements, such as soot and smoke, while burning.  Burning paraffin candles has been compared to breathing in diesel fumes. I don't know about you, but that would kill the mood for me. But beeswax candles don't have that problem. In fact, burning beeswax produces negative ions, which are nature's air purifiers.

Honey can be used as an alternative to sugar in baking, cereals and any thing you want to add a bit of flavor!

If you find yourself with a cough make your own cough syrup.

Herbal/Honey cough syrup

1 tablespoon licorice root
1 tablespoon marshmallow root
1 tablespoon plantain leaf
1 teaspoon thyme leaf
1 pint purified/filtered water
4 tablespoons honey
1/8 teaspoon anise essential oil (optional)

Prepare a triple-strength tea by simmering the herbs in water for 10 minutes, then steeping for 20 minutes. Strain the tea, then stir in honey and glycerin while the tea is still warm. Add optional essential oil. Take 1 tablespoon at a time. Stored in a cool place, this syrup will keep for 2 weeks. In the refrigerator, it will keep for several months.

This recipe is suitable for children, but not for infants, who should not have honey.

6 fresh garlic cloves (minced)
2 cups purified/filtered water
1 tablespoon white vinegar
3/4 cup honey

Bring water and minced garlic to a boil. Turn burner off and let steep for about 20 minutes.
Put into Vita Mixer and liquefy (no vitamixer - let set until cool, then strain). Add vinegar and honey mix well and let sit until cool, then refrigerate.
1 Tablespoon three or four times a day. Much better than OTC cough preparations!

Wishing you healthy eating!
Lena

US Agriculture Department Finds 1,000 Violations of Mad Cow Rules
by Randy Fabi
August 16, 2005

WASHINGTON - Federal food safety inspectors found more than 1,000 instances since 2004 where US meat plants cut corners or violated regulations aimed at preventing the spread of mad cow disease, the US Agriculture Department said Monday.

The USDA said it released documents to the American Meat Institute and the consumer group Public Citizen showing that federal inspectors filed 1,036 noncompliance reports from January 2004 to May 2005 involving the removal of the brain, skull and spinal cord of cattle aged 30 months and older.
The materials are considered to carry the highest risk in spreading the brain-wasting disease, also known as bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE). The USDA banned them from the human food supply a few days after the December 2003 discovery of the first US case of mad cow disease in a Washington state dairy cow.

The nation's second confirmed case of BSE was discovered earlier this summer in a Texas beef cow.

Public Citizen said the documents showed instances where US meat plants did not distinguish between older and younger animals, banned materials were not removed and tools not properly cleaned.

"I think there still has to be a concern about meat from an infected animal making it into the food supply," said Tony Corbo, legislative representative for Public Citizen. "It is not a fail-safe system."

The meat industry disagreed.

"Some groups will no doubt attempt to use this information as evidence of possible operational problems and even a food safety concern, when nothing is further from the truth," said Jim Hodges, president of the AMI Foundation.

AMI said the noncompliance reports represent just one-tenth of 1 percent of the 46 million cattle slaughtered nationwide during the 17-month period.

The USDA's Food Safety and Inspection Service said its federal meat inspectors strictly enforced the regulations to keep BSE out of the human food supply.

"These data demonstrate inspection program personnel took immediate action when they determined that regulators were not being strictly followed. The analysis demonstrates public health was protected," the agency said in a statement posted on its Web site.

The documents were released to the industry and consumer groups in response to Freedom of Information Act requests, and were not made public by the USDA.

Public Citizen said it was still reviewing all the documents, and would need several days to summarize the noncompliance reports.

The US Food and Drug and Administration has separately been considering tougher safeguards against mad cow disease for the past 18 months. The FDA in 1997 banned the use of cattle remains as a protein supplement for cattle, but consumer groups have urged the FDA to extend the ban to feed for poultry, pigs and pet food.

Global Warming May Take Economic Toll
by Sarah Edmonds
August 12, 2005

WASHINGTON - The White House's refusal to consider government caps on greenhouse gas emissions may save the US economy short-term pain, but experts warn unchecked global heat could exact a heavy long-run toll.

"While there are costs associated with reducing emissions, there are certainly costs associated with not doing anything," said Kevin Forbes, head of Catholic University's economics department. "It would be, in my opinion, folly not to try to do something."
According to Ralph Cicerone, president of the National Academy of Sciences, earth surface temperatures could be up to 10.4 degrees Fahrenheit above 1990 levels by 2100, potentially worsening storms, raising sea levels and eating away ice caps.

After shunning the Kyoto Protocol on greenhouse gases, which President George W. Bush said would have "wrecked" the economy, the United States last month joined Japan, Australia, China, India and South Korea in a pact focused on technology-sharing, without set targets.

The world's richest economy is also its biggest carbon dioxide emitter, pushing out 5.8 billion metric tons in 2003. China, in second place, emitted 3.5 billion, with all of Western Europe at 3.9 billion.

US emissions are projected to keep rising, despite plans to lower carbon intensity, or use per unit of economic growth.

The White House wants cuts to be voluntary and resists measures that would impose restrictions on output of such gases as carbon dioxide and nitrous oxide, seen as culprits behind global warming, saying this would hurt economic growth.

"We oppose policies like mandatory caps on emissions, that would achieve reductions by raising energy costs, slowing the economy, and putting Americans out of work," said White House spokeswoman Dana Perino.

While experts agree new technologies are vital, many see the economic argument as spurious. Higher costs may also be a necessary evil since they spur innovation and companies will act more aggressively if inaction hits where it counts.

John Reilly of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology's Joint Program on the Science and Policy of Global Change has examined the economic effects of several proposals.

"When we looked at implementing Kyoto ... we estimated that would be 6/10ths or 1 percent of the economy. We thought that was costly but that's not wrecking the economy," he said.

Still, even those who back government restrictions agree Kyoto isn't the answer for the United States.

They call its targets too tough, its deadline too near and say the absence of developing countries such as India and China could distort the global economic playing field.

What is needed, they say, is a world-spanning deal with fair goals. "You will never be able to solve this problem without all of the major emitters being involved," said Katie Mandes of the Pew Center on Global Climate Change.

Experts say economic risks could be eased with a Kyoto-like allowance trading system so the regions best able to make affordable cuts can sell their achievement to those less able.

While the United States can't fix the problem alone, Reilly said it should lead the way with meaningful steps.

"I think it's one of the great tragedies of our era that the administration hasn't risen to the occasion on this. It's committing future generations to extraordinary costs and problems," said James Gustave Speth, dean of the Yale School of Forestry & Environmental Studies. "In the same breath, I have to say I wish the prior administration had done more itself."

The great unknown is the price of inaction.

"There are real economic costs associated with not taking action, including changes to water supply infrastructure, industrial capital, like pipelines, and with human health," said Janet Peace, senior research fellow, economics at Pew.

"With droughts, there's a cost. With increased flooding, there's a cost (and) with increased hurricanes and tornadoes."

Cap critics say real change would take many Kyotos.

"Scientists who support Kyoto have estimated that emissions cuts equivalent to 30 Kyotos will be needed," said Myron Ebell, director of global warming at the Washington-based Competitive Enterprise Institute, which supports "free enterprise and limited government."

He said costs would rise with each new target since companies make the cheapest cuts first. "I can't imagine that any informed person could claim that the total costs will be anything less than astronomical."

Reilly admitted the ultimate price will be high although solutions can and should include economic safety valves.

"Starting on a path isn't committing to the entire path," he said. "If the cost becomes too great for the economy, we have to reconsider where we go. If the climate effects become more severe, or less severe, then we reconsider as we go."

And a fix may cost less than feared.

"When you turn the genius of the private sector loose on solving the problem, they do things," said Speth.

Chemical giant DuPont has cut emissions by 72 percent, beating both its 65 percent target and its self-imposed 2010 deadline at a cost of $55 million.

Tom Jacobs, DuPont's senior adviser on global affairs, said the company sees caps as inevitable and exploited "unique opportunities" for big, low-cost reductions, though he admits cheap options are not limitless.
